How do you get someone to say - YES? There is a simple phrase or two you can add to any request that will increase the chances that almost anyone will do you the favor you ask. This episode begins with what those phrases are. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/10510974.2012.727941?journalCode=rcst20 Certainly one of the appeals of watching professional sports is knowing you are watching the best of the best play the game. So how did those players get to be the best and what can you learn from that so you can get to the top of your game in your chosen field? Ashley and Po Bronson's book, Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing, discusses the science of competition and reveals why it's important to experience defeat — on and off the field. Competition allows us to better gauge our abilities by identifying strengths and weaknesses, and reveals what needs improvement. Without the contrast of winning and losing, there's no motivation to push to maximum potential. You can find growth and opportunity in every loss if you position your mindset to learn from your mistakes. Listen in as Ashley and Jake discuss some of those powerful mindset shifts and approaches that can help you to be better than you were yesterday.

What if I told you that there’s a performance-enhancing drug that’s completely free, completely legal, and has no ill side-effects when used correctly? Oh, and you’ve probably already taken it many times in your life. Competition is that drug, and today on the show I talk to author Po Bronson about his book "Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing," which digs deep into the science of competition and how it can improve our performance in a wide variety of tasks. In today’s podcast, Po and I discuss the difference between adaptive and maladaptive competition, the culture of virtuous competition that existed amongst the ancient Greeks, and how you can shape competition to make you a better man in all aspects of your life.

Louisville basketball coach Jeff Walz ranted on ESPN about participation trophies for losers. Guest: Ashley Merryman, author of Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing and NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children - Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall told Roy that this coming Friday, when he attends the pan Canadian climate plan meeting in Ottawa, he will be the "skunk at the garden party". He says he will not sign the climate plan and is prepared to take the federal government to court over Trudeau's announced carbon tax, which Wall insists will damage Saskatchewan and Canadian economies. Guest: Brad Wall, premier of Saskatchewan - This past week, Green Party leader Elizabeth May declared she is ready "to go to jail" to stop pipelines. - Roy asks callers - does Elizabeth May deserve praise for her public avowing she is prepared to "go to jail" to stop pipelines, or should she retract or resign as an MP? - 17-year-old son Justin Masotti of Hamilton is in Tijuana, Mexico, where he continues to make visible progress battling his rare brain cancer. Weighing 120 pounds and bedridden when he arrived in Mexico about six weeks ago, Justin has gained significant weight, is able to get up and has begun to exercise. Guests: Justin and Mike Masotti, Justin's father - Shaun Ekert is in Germany with his mother and father (who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer). Shaun's father had the same IRE nanoknife pancreatic cancer surgery as Trent Hills, Ontario Mayor Hector MacMillan. Po Bronson is a former Silicon Valley journalist for TIME, the New York Times, and Wired. He was the creator of the $treet, a television show on FOX that starred Jennifer Connelly, and author of "TOP DOG: The Science of Winning and Losing." Bronson tries to distill why Wall Street promotes male analysts, even though women do a better job. He shares his intuitions on how a woman will be successful in business. Bronson then tries to answer these quirky business-related questions: - Why is home field advantage just as relevant in diplomacy and deal-making as it is in sports? - How can the shape of entrepreneurs' hands be just as revealing as their business plans? - What does Italy's domination of the packaging business have in common with the Harvard-Yale football rivalry? The conversation then finishes with sociology as Bronson helps explain why younger siblings are more competitive than first-borns. He thinks that parents praising their children affects their competitiveness. Find out more about Po Bronson at www.pobronson.com. Po Bronson has built a career both as a successful novelist and as a prominent writer of narrative nonfiction. He has published six books, and he has written for television, magazines, and newspapers, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and for National Public Radio's Morning Edition. Po Bronson's book of social documentary, "What Should I Do With My Life?", was a #1 New York Times bestseller and remained in the Top 10 for nine months. His first novel, "Bombardiers," was a #1 bestseller in the United Kingdom. His books have been translated into 19 languages.
