On this Make A Difference Minute, I'm reminding listeners that someone else's inconsiderate behavior does not deserve control over their peace. Rudeness, carelessness, and a lack of awareness can easily disrupt our day if we let it. This segment encourages listeners to pause, gain perspective, and choose calm over reaction. Protecting your peace is not ignoring bad behavior. It is refusing to let it dictate your emotional state. Sponsor: Hydration Lounge HydrationL.com

To hear Gen Z talk is to witness a linguistic revolution. The profanity once deemed most vulgar now often passes without comment. However, language that attacks a person's race, gender, or ability is firmly and immediately condemned. This new hierarchy of what makes words offensive speaks volumes about our evolving social values. On the show: Niu Honglin, Steve & Laiming

They discuss how unique voices and genuine creativity will stand out in an AI-saturated landscape, the economic parallels between modern content creation and startup growth, and the tricky dynamics of building sustainable momentum in a world of noise. The trio also unpack the “$10K MRR” meme, pricing psychology, and the difference between chasing vanity metrics and building lasting value. "Sometimes when we think we've hit a dead end or that something isn't working, an even better opportunity comes along." -Dr. John O'Brien Dr. John O'Brien is a licensed psychologist, professional speaker, and executive coach based in Portland, Maine. With a career spanning over 30 years in the mental health field, he specializes in creating lower-stress work environments that promote employee engagement and productivity. Dr. O'Brien has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maine in Augusta, and he is the author of the book "Rudeness Rehab: Reclaiming Civility in the Workplace and Your Home Space." His expertise uniquely positions him to address challenges in mental health and workplace dynamics, offering insights that blend psychological understanding with practical business applications. Episode Summary: In this episode of "Oh, My Health...There Is Hope!" hosted by Jana Short, we welcome the insightful Dr. John O'Brien to discuss his recent book, "Rudeness Rehab: Reclaiming Civility in the Workplace and Your Home Space." Dr. O'Brien delves into the pervasive issue of rudeness and incivility, which has been exacerbated by the isolating impact of COVID-19, divisive politics, and the impersonal nature of social media. He shares a personal anecdote of overcoming a discouraging professional setback, highlighting how resilience and support networks can lead to unexpected opportunities. Throughout the conversation, Dr. O'Brien emphasizes the critical importance of compassion and active listening in both professional and personal contexts. The episode examines how leaders can demonstrate appropriate behavior within their organizations to foster a culture of respect and civility. With insights drawn from psychology and his professional experiences, Dr. O'Brien offers actionable advice for individuals seeking to navigate rudeness and foster a more collaborative and supportive environment. The dialogue further emphasizes the power of introspection and communication in transforming relationships at work and at home. Key Takeaways: The pervasive issue of rudeness at work and at home can be mitigated by fostering a culture of respect and empathy. The isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified incivility, but tools like active listening and mindfulness can help. Leaders must model civility and effectively address rudeness in real time to cultivate a positive workplace environment. Effective communication requires recognizing when to respond and when to let go, especially in digital interactions. Personal anecdotes demonstrate resilience against negativity and the importance of seeking better opportunities. If you like your sports with a side of chaos, this one's for you. Norm dives headfirst into the Cowboys–Packers 40–40 overtime tie — a game so bonkers it felt like Madden on rookie mode. Dak Prescott? Nearly flawless. Brian Schottenheimer? Calling plays like he had the cheat codes. The defense? Well… let's just say Green Bay found plenty of daylight. Then it's off the field and onto the greens at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, where the competition was world-class but the fans were straight-up embarrassing. Yep, we're talking vulgar chants, heckling during swings, and comedian Heather McMahon somehow thinking “F-U Rory” was a good rally cry. Spoiler: it wasn't. It's Cowboys brilliance, Cowboys blunders, and a Ryder Cup that turned into a case study on why sportsmanship still matters. 0:00 - CU had a chance to rally and beat BYU at Folsom...and managed to fall flat on their faces down the stretch again. The Rams got smacked around again. They were never in that game to begin with. Our local college football teams need to get their act together. Also, after the Packers @ Cowboys game last night, we're ready to say it: NO MORE NFL TIES! There can't be ties in the National Football League. Last time I checked, this is America. 15:15 - The Chargers fell to the Jaxson Dart-led Giants, and the Chiefs absolutely mollywhopped the Ravens. How does this slight reshuffling of the AFC West affect the Broncos?36:58 - The Ryder Cup was ROUGH over the weekend for Team USA. And the worst part? Brett is actually coming to the defense of his nemesis Rory McIlroy.
SPECIAL REPORT: The state of Rudeness (sigh) Y'all, I'm tired. And a little bit fussy. And apparently so are lots of other ppl. But that's no reason to be rude. As a matter of fact, if you keep it up (the rudeness) you will consistently feel worse and so will your interactions with ev one else, from complete and total strangers all the way to people you love. In the wake of Jimmy Kimmel and other inconsiderate responses to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Dr. Kathy unpacks why we need to celebrate and encourage politenenss and manners. She considers this through a growing movement in culture for kids to be more authentic than kind, which she references through a recent article co-host Wayne Stender stumbled across this week. It's part of the cultural mood away from civility to self-centeredness, and Dr. Kathy notes that parents have the primary role in reforming culture and civilization by teaching manners at home.

The last piece I published here on Substack delved lightly into entitlement, with a commitment of a more detailed dive into the topic to follow, so here's a prime example of what that looks like: WNBA players' rudeness and entitlement were on full display during the All-Star Game last Saturday and, actually, throughout the entire weekend. This is the audio version of an episode of The Adrienne Ross Show on YouTube. Welcome back to the Brand X Podcast! In this vintage episode from May 11, 2016, hosts John Jamingo and Deuce dive into a hilarious and relatable mix of everyday annoyances and nostalgic observations. Kick back as John shares his “grumpy old man” adventures, from enduring parking lot gridlock on Mother's Day—complete with two clueless security guards—to unleashing the power of Twitter when customer service falls flat. Deuce adds his flavor, reflecting on how social media has transformed how we talk, connect, and—sometimes—argue while recounting his reluctant adoption of smartphones and the epic autocorrect fail story you'll have to hear to believe. The duo also riffs on the modern decline of discourse, swapping stories about political clashes on Facebook, debates about personal boundaries, and their gripes with pushy solar salesmen. In addition to the laughs, they get nostalgic about how things used to be done—letters to the editor, face-to-face disagreements, and finding common ground even when opinions differ.Whether you're struggling with autocorrect, sick of traffic jams, or embracing your inner grumpiness, this episode will make you laugh and maybe even nod in agreement.
