A detailed exploration of the illustrious past of American football is adeptly presented in this episode, focusing on the remarkable figure of PA Corbin, a celebrated player from Yale University during the late 19th century. I engage in a thorough dialogue with Timothy Brown from Football Archaeology, who elucidates the significance of Corbin's unconventional maneuvers and the broader implications of his contributions to the sport. The conversation delves into the historical context of football's evolution from its rugby origins, highlighting how the game was transitioning during Corbin's era. We discuss the formative years of American football, specifically the innovations that emerged during the 1880s, which laid the groundwork for the modern iteration of the game we recognize today. Corbin's pivotal role in a legendary Harvard-Yale match, wherein he executed a trick play that defied conventional expectations, is recounted with great enthusiasm, illustrating the ingenuity and strategic thinking that characterized early football strategies. This segment serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of pioneering athletes like Corbin, whose creativity and skill on the field continue to inspire contemporary players. This information comes from Tim's original post titled:Pa Corbin and A Trick Well Executed - Takeaways: The Pigskin Daily History Dispatch podcast delves into the rich history of American football, illuminating significant events and figures in the sport. Timothy Brown discusses the remarkable story of PA Corbin, a Yale football player known for his innovative trick play during the early development of football. Listeners are encouraged to explore footballarchaeology.com for daily insights and tidbits about football history that enhance their understanding of the sport. The evolution of football rules is highlighted, particularly the transition from rugby-style play to more structured American football. Corbin's trick play, which involved a strategic dribble kick, exemplifies the creativity and athleticism present in the early days of football. The lawsuit claims these institutions required students to disclose the financial assets of their noncustodial parents, reducing the amount of financial aid available to them. Many Harvard students describe a social scene where besides a handful of bright spots — such as Housing Day and the Harvard-Yale game — traditional college revelry characterized by roaring parties, vibrant and frequent tailgates, and school spirit in abundance has been missing at Harvard. While administrators cite a hands-off approach to social life — and a lack of available funding for College-organized parties and concerts — some students said officially sanctioned social events did not meet the mark. This week on Newstalk, reporters Natalie K Bandura '26 and Azusa M. When Jason and I started dating, my little brothers would tease me asking why I was dating a guy who felt ALL too comfortable in tight spandex biking shorts. I think they hoped this would be a short fling considering that spandex weren't exactly "cool" to two young teenage boys. Fast forward eight years and now they don't think twice about the spandex and have accepted this simply as a "personality trait" of their brother-in-law who they look up to and respect lots. I learned early on that Jason is unapologetically himself -- spandex and all! Jason grew up in the Harvard Yale area of Salt Lake City. He is one of five children and has a special bond with each of his siblings. Having to keep up with an older brother (some of you may know him!) who was big, fast and athletic, he was pushed in ways he probably wouldn't have been pushed otherwise. He was small but mighty. The size of the fight in this small dog was huge! This ended up paying off as he excelled athletically at East High and beyond -- he was a varsity soccer captain two years in a row, football captain and played quarterback his senior year leading the team to the state finals. He truly could have played any sport and done well. Jason is a natural leader. There is a humble confidence in which Jason carries himself and it shows in how he interacts with people. He makes others feel important and comfortable, striking up conversations easily while genuinely interested in their lives. He leads quietly, without wanting the spotlight. Jason loves reading, snow skiing, water skiing, trail running and is a big adrenaline junkie at heart. He feels more comfortable doing some kind of complex flip off of any 60+ foot cliff rather than just jumping and used to spend hours in the terrain park perfecting crazy ski tricks. All these things come naturally to him. Jason went on to graduate in Finance from the University of Utah and now works for a local Venture Capital firm, Epic Ventures. His passion for cycling began in his early college years. I think he would say the three things that helped him develop a deep love for the sport were: his LDS mission to the Netherlands (where there are more bikes than cars), "Creighton's Riders" and his brother Jake who introduced him to the Mi Duole crew. Combining the simple joy that being in the saddle brings with the pure physical grit, mental toughness, early mornings, dedication, challenging climbs, sunrise rides, and friendship that come with it, he really has fallen in love. Not just with the sport of cycling, but with Mi Duole and the people who make up Mi Duole. Jason has competed in countless races including Lotoja, Saints to Sinners, The Tour of St. George, Crusher in the Tushar, The Wasatch All-Road, and "his version" of The Ultimate Challenge. He loves competing, but he loves people and his relationships with those people even more.  Of all the things that come naturally to Jason, his role of "father" has come the most natural. He was born to be the "girl dad" he is to our one-year-old, Louisa. Recently, his morning bike rides have started earlier with some fewer and farther between since stepping into this role. Yet somehow he still hits personal records and pushes himself to become his best self -- both on and off the bike. Jason is constant, resilient, happy, fun, passionate, loyal, kind, strong, genuine and just plain old GOOD. If you know him, you love him! His girls feel so lucky to be on this ride of life alongside him.

Emma hosts writer Britni de la Cretaz and Lyndsey D'Arcangelo, women's basketball writer for the Athletic, to discuss their recent book Hail Mary: The Rise and Fall of the National Women's Football League, and what they've uncovered in diving into the history of the league and the women that played in it. D'Arcangelo and de la Cretaz dive into the research that led them to the history of this league, first studying the role of women in football writ large, before stumbling onto the Toledo Troopers, the winningest team in Pro Football history, and somehow the only National Women's Football League team that the media has left any trace of. Next, Britni and Lyndsey walk through what the league's relationship with the media and public looked like at the time, including the shoestring budgets and misogynistic coverage that they had to operate with, which unfortunately still reflects the state of women's sports in the US, before they dive deeper into the limited coverage they received, which generally focused on the body shapes, and “attractiveness” of the women playing the game, and how it petered off as soon as they found it had lost its novel appeal. Jumping back to the end of the 19th Century, de la Cretaz and D'Arcangelo dive into a Harvard - Yale women's football game that saw incredible reception, both by the women who came to play and spectate, and even by the male onlookers – despite the exploitative nature behind their attendance – and how throughout the history of Football, women have clearly shown their interest in playing and engaging with the sport. This brings them to the beginnings of the NWFL in the 1960s, as Sid Friedman, a sports agent at the time, saw an opportunity to make a spectacle of women that could play the sport against men, slowly expanding it to more and more women's football teams in the rust belt, and eventually launching the creation of the league. Despite the success the teams saw in the run-up to the creation of the league, in the wake of the expansion the women saw little-to-no media coverage, and what they did see hinged on the misogyny they had begun the discussion with, not to mention rampant homophobia both within the media and in the running of the teams themselves, despite the largely queer player base. This brings them to a discussion of the role of infrastructure to bolster the development of young athletes, and how when it comes to male athletes the positive impact of the infrastructure is ignored, just like the negative impact on women with lacking infrastructure is ignored, as they discuss the role of Title IX's passing in the same era as the NWFL, and look forwards to see what changes could and should be done to promote women's sports in the future. Emma also covers the ramping efforts to get the US involved in hot warfare, alongside the complete evaporation of international aid to other war-torn countries like Yemen, and dives into Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA)'s love for disaster capitalism. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they admire Brian Holmes pressing Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin of Idaho on her White Supremacist connections, even though she only JUST googled Nick Fuentes's beliefs, before reflecting on a beautiful Michael Brooks clip to celebrate St Patty's day, and Ben Shapiro and Pat Robertson take on US intervention from wildly different, yet equally violent sides. Justin from Seattle calls in to discuss revamping public housing on the federal level, Evan from Portland explores the peer review process in the scientific community, and Fox discusses Biden's tardiness. Eric Metaxas and Charlie Kirk proclaim their appreciation for Bill Clinton's economic policy, Ben in VT promotes his state's upcoming constitutional amendment, and Sam from Indiana discusses personal liberties and gun ownership, plus, your calls and IMs! Ivy League Murders, #Harvard, #Yale, #Columbia, # Dartmouth #Princeton, #Brown, U of Penn, #Cornell. Two “crime-heads” joined forces to create a podcast in which they explore the dark side of the Ivy League — including the murders of Yale students. Laura McDonald and Sarah Alcorn, a Harvard graduate, founded the podcast “Ivy League Murders,” in which they research, discuss and comment on violent crime on Ivy League campuses. The podcast was founded approximately a year ago, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The weekly episodes explore everything from murder, kidnappings and mystery, as well as power and privilege in the justice system; they invite listeners to take a closer look at what lurks beneath the surface in the Ivy League. “Human nature does not care if you have an Ivy League degree,” McDonald said. “Greed, jealousy, lust — we see these characteristics in all socioeconomic groups.” The podcast began as a passion project for both McDonald and Alcorn with 10 original cases, and has since grown into a weekly podcast which Spotify describes as an exposé of “the most haunting cases to spin out of some of America's most elite corners.” McDonald and Alcorn went to high school together at the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Yet their paths never crossed, until about two and a half years ago, when Alcorn's daughter asked to adopt a kitten; their search led them to McDonald's door. “As a [private investigator], I was the most crime-obsessed person I knew and then I met Laura, and she's much more, or at least as much, of a crime-head than I am,” Alcorn said. According to the two podcasters, McDonald had the idea for the podcast but wanted a partner to work with. Fittingly, Alcorn is a private investigator by trade; McDonald's idea immediately caught her attention. “She was the seed, I was the soil and [the podcast] grew,” Alcorn said. According to the hosts, spending their childhoods in Cambridge, next to Harvard Square, led them to grow up with great curiosity as to what loomed behind the Ivy League gates. Their shared passion for true crime then sparked further questions about the more nefarious happenings on Ivy League college campuses. “It's that curiosity that brought about this podcast,” McDonald said. “People think that being in a certain educational and economic status shields you from certain types of personalities or people.” In fact, according to both hosts, the Ivy League schools are unique in that they provide a “pastiche of privilege,” and many assume that as a result, students at Ivy League schools are exempt from the horrors of violent crime. However, the podcasters emphasized that this impression is false. With the research and the commentary they present in the podcast, Alcorn and McDonald demonstrate that students, alumni and affiliates of Ivy League schools are also afflicted by the same human faults of obsession, jealousy, greed and anger which may lead to violent crime. Indeed, the hosts outlined the podcast's goal as being that of exposing these realities --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

The Last Season is a collaboration between Jenny Judson and Danielle Mahfood, who met in high school and shared a mutual love of historical fiction and romance novels. Instead of passing notes in class, Jenny and Danielle would write short excerpts from imaginary novels that featured themselves and their classmates as characters caught up in tales of romance and adventure. Many years later, after cheering for opposite teams at Harvard-Yale games, they came together in New York City to begin writing The Last Season, inspired both by the Victorian period and the financial crisis of 2008.

Michael Thornton (ASIJ 2006) Historian (Post Doctoral Research Associate) Michael Thornton is a historian of early-modern and modern Japan, with a particular interest in urban history. In his dissertation, “Settling Sapporo: City and State in the Global Nineteenth Century,” he analyzed the planning and construction of Sapporo across the nineteenth century. He argued that the city was built as a settler-colonial capital, playing an instrumental role in the Japanese colonization of Hokkaido. The city was in turn heavily shaped by its colonial position and functions. More broadly, Thornton is interested in the transformation of Japanese cities between the Tokugawa and Meiji periods, including the development of new forms of social and political organization and municipal administration, with an eye to lessons that the rest of the world might learn from one of the planet's most urbanized societies. Thornton grew up in Kobe and Tokyo before attending Yale, where he received a BA in History in 2010. One of these groups, Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard, has mobilized to demand that Harvard University withdraw investments in the fossil fuel industry. Students, faculty as well as alums have joined together to advocate for a sustainable and socially responsible future. On November 23, at the annual Harvard-Yale game, Divest Harvard took its protests to the Yale Bowl, rushing onto the field to call both universities to divest from fossil fuel companies. Their actions delayed the game by approximately 40 minutes and made the rounds on many national news networks, including the New York Times and the Guardian. Po Bronson is a former Silicon Valley journalist for TIME, the New York Times, and Wired. He was the creator of the $treet, a television show on FOX that starred Jennifer Connelly, and author of "TOP DOG: The Science of Winning and Losing."   Bronson tries to distill why Wall Street promotes male analysts, even though women do a better job. He shares his intuitions on how a woman will be successful in business.    Bronson then tries to answer these quirky business-related questions:   - Why is home field advantage just as relevant in diplomacy and deal-making as it is in sports? - How can the shape of entrepreneurs' hands be just as revealing as their business plans? - What does Italy's domination of the packaging business have in common with the Harvard-Yale football rivalry?   The conversation then finishes with sociology as Bronson helps explain why younger siblings are more competitive than first-borns. He thinks that parents praising their children affects their competitiveness.   Find out more about Po Bronson at www.pobronson.com.   Po Bronson has built a career both as a successful novelist and as a prominent writer of narrative nonfiction. He has published six books, and he has written for television, magazines, and newspapers, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and for National Public Radio's Morning Edition.     Po Bronson's book of social documentary, "What Should I Do With My Life?", was a #1 New York Times bestseller and remained in the Top 10 for nine months. His first novel, "Bombardiers," was a #1 bestseller in the United Kingdom. His books have been translated into 19 languages.

My college friend Ben Beach, editor of The Wilderness Society's Wilderness Magazine, never misses a Harvard-Yale football game and always holds a tailgate barbecue before the game.  In this podcast Ben talks about the hard-to-define pleasure he gets from this regularity, and he and I remember the most famous Harvard-Yale game in the 125-year history of the classic, 1968's version which ended in a 29-29 tie.  The podcast contains audio clips from Ben and his wife Carol's 36th consecutive barbecue this year, and also some audio from a showing at a local movie theatre of "Harvard Beats Yale, 29-29," a new documentary out about the game.  I highly recommend the movie, which The New Yorker calls "a fascinating feat of cultural archeology."
