My guest this week is Tim Stafford, who joins me to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the best loved and most influential albums in bluegrass.'JD Crowe & The New South' was recorded in January 1975 and released in August the same year. Tim joins me to chat about what makes it such a milestone record in bluegrass, despite it not really being a bluegrass album at all in some ways. We chat about the musicians who made it so special, including the rhythmic magic Tony Rice and JD Crowe had; why Ricky Skaggs is potentially the greatest tenor singer in bluegrass; why you it's important not to underestimate Bobby Slone's role in the band and the Jerry Douglas break on this record that was so good all three singers forgot to come back in after it!Tim also tells me why the session almost didn't happen due to Tony cutting his hand and suffering from a bad cold, plus plenty more fascinating detail about the band and the making of this record. You can see the video Tim talks about (along with the wonderful hair and shirts!) on YouTube2025 is also a big anniversary year for Tim's band Blue Highway, who turn 30 this year. This week we feature Blue Highway's bass player and lead singer Wayne Taylor. We talk about Wayne's early years in bluegrass, his 30 years performing and recording with Blue Highway, the newest Blue Highway recording and the Blue Highway festival.
We're taking a trip up into hill country to celebrate a true Americana sound. From it's simple roots rolling out of Appalachia, celebrating music and culture going back even further, bluegrass music evolved from many different corners with a combination of many styles, including old-time mountain music, square dance fiddling, blues, gospel, jazz, and popular music. You can count on high energy, fast tempos and a most distinctive sound. This week's show has the syncopated rhythms moving along like a freight train, those nostalgic remembrances, and heel-kicking improvisations…not to mention those high lonesome vocals. We've got Blue Highway, Bill Monroe, Mac Wiseman, Earl Scruggs, The Rice Brothers and a couple dozen others in a Friday morning bluegrass extravaganza, sharing both classic and contemporary performers. If you're close by, tune into KOWS 92.5 FM or, better yet, stream us almost anywhere on planet Earth at kowsfm.com/listen.

This episode of BPBg features an interview with Dr Des Walsh, of the Dublin, Ireland-based band ‘Whistle'. I visited with the band during my recent visit to Ireland, and enjoyed a great evening of their music, as well as some jamming with them. Of course, we've got a few ‘regulars' on the show like High Fidelity, Blue Highway, David Grisman and even some HCBB.
Dobro master Rob Ickes joins me on the show this week. Rob was kind enough to drop in to the Henhouse to hang for a while, talk and even play a little bit. Rob is one of those players that is so good on one particular instrument that he's managed to carve out a really impressive career being dedicated to just one thing. And that one thing is the dobro, which is kind of a specific instrument - It's somewhat married to bluegrass music, but a very few players, and that list includes Rob and Jerry Douglas (and maybe one or two others), have managed to bring it to wider audiences through sessions and performances outside of that genre, while maintaining their standing at the highest level within it. Rob grew up in California, but moved to Nashville in the early 90's and really established himself as a pre-eminent player with a long stint in the acclaimed bluegrass band Blue Highway. He left the band in 2015 to focus on his duo with the incredible singer and guitarist Trey Hensley, who was on this show a couple of years ago. Rob's impressive session history includes working with artists like Merle Haggard, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Charlie Haden, Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss, Little Feat, Patty Loveless and many more. And while the session world keeps calling, Rob has never wanted to solely become a studio player, so he keeps busy on the road as much as he can, and the duo with Trey is incredibly busy now. Their latest release as Rob and Trey is called “Living In A Song”. On top of all that, Rob continues to teach and run his successful “Resosummit” each year here in Nashville. You can get info on all of Rob's activities as well as his tour dates with Trey Hensley over at robickes.com - Enjoy my conversation with Rob Ickes! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. #antones #fabulousthunderbirds #stevierayvaughan #austinmusicians Angela discusses her long career and talks about her friends in the music biz: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, Huey Lewis, Gregg Allman, Janis Joplin and more. In the early 1960s, Strehli learned the harmonica and bass guitar before becoming a vocalist. In 1966 she visited Chicago, and attended concerts given by Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy. In her final university year, Strehli and Lewis Cowdrey formed the Fabulous Rockets. Strehli then sang as a backing vocalist for James Polk and the Brothers and assisted with Storm, which had been formed by Cowdrey and Jimmie Vaughan. In 1972, she was a founding member of Southern Feeling, along with W. C. Clark and Denny Freeman. Three years later Strehli became the stage manager and sound technician at Antone's, a nightclub in Austin, Texas. By 1986, Strehli had recorded Stranger Blues (EP) which help launch Antone's own record label. Her debut album was Soul Shake (1987, Antone's Records), and she appeared on Dreams Come True, with Lou Ann Barton and Marcia Ball (1990). Her own effort Blonde and Blue (1993, Rounder Records) assisted in building the Austin, Texas blues scene, alongside nightclub owner Clifford Antone, Kim Wilson, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmie Vaughan. In 1998, Strehli released Deja Blue, and Blue Highway followed in 2005. Rural America is underserved by traditional investors. Blue Highway Capital is investing in cash flow positive business with strong management teams in niche markets where there is little (or frequently no) competition for deals. Karin Gregory has been investing in the rural economy for over 20 years. Gregory and her colleagues have backed companies like Aryv, the Uber for non-emergency medical appointments and LED Dynamics, manufacturing smart lighting solutions to reduce energy costs. In rural Ameica, there is a structural break in valuations that allows Blue Highway Capital to invest in great companies that happen to be based on the “Blue Highways” of America.
Blue Highway, Claire Lynch, Pete Pike, Walter Hensley, Dix Bruce & Jim Nunally – some well-known, some less-well-known names, but all playing some great music.

Four years before Pulp Fiction set off a trend of quirky, violent crime films in the '90s, writer/director George Armitage adapted the first of Charles Willeford's Hoke Moseley novels with this violent, titularly Miami-based gem starring a gorgeous and unhinged Alec Baldwin. On this episode former guests Kyle Smith and Tyler Savage discuss:- this 1990 Jonathan Demme-produced film;- its exuberant personality;- the long-lasting influence of Willeford (Tarantino initially said he was aiming for the author with Pulp Fiction);- and Armitage's career from Roger Corman, Gross Point Blank, and the chaotically studio-edited The Big Bounce.Also:- Fred Ward's late-'80s/early-'90s streak;- alternate castings over the years for Hoke Moseley;- whether Jennifer Jason Leigh is playing an under- or overage sex worker;- and the rise and fall of that '90s crime film trend.Kyle Smith is writer/director of the films Blue Highway and Turkey Bowl, which debuted at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival. Filmmaker Kyle Smith is back, along with first-time guest co-host and old friend of the show (and me), writer and performer Dustin Levell, to pick and talk one of Saturday Night Live's founding filmmakers, Tom Schiller, his lone feature film, and its bizarre underground relegation. On this episode, we also discuss:- Schiller's self-description as a “foreign” director;- how out of place this style is from SNL's current formatted format;- why SNL films are less about format than characters;- and how truly amazing it is that a movie with these stars and filmmakers was shelved at the height of the comedy boom that SNL helped create.Also:- If this is or isn't Lorne Michaels first produced narrative feature;- is or isn't the first “SNL movie”;- what its failure to even secure a release might have done to Michaels other produced films;- the relationship between him and Schiller;- the filmmakers from Adam McKay to Christopher Guest that have sprung from SNL ranks;- and outsiders who've made short films for the show such as Robert Altman, Paul Thomas Anderson, Martin Breast, and Jim Jarmusch.Kyle Smith is writer/director of the films Blue Highway and Turkey Bowl, which debuted at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival. Is this 1999 film ripe for a fresh debate, much like Die Hard, on its merits as a Christmas movie? Not really, but filmmaker Kyle Smith is back this week, joined by film editor Rehman Nizar Ali to discuss Stanley Kubrick's final film. On today's episode we discuss how the movie changes in viewings throughout the years based on the maturity of ones own romantic relationships, what early iterative casting ideas like Steve Martin or Woody Allen would have been like, if the cinemageography of the production design leaves the film open to a Room 237 interpretation, and Shane's obsessive love/hate for screenwriter Frederic Raphael's memoir of writing the film, Eyes Wide Open. Also: Whether Kubrick had a specific body-type for model/extras, how the real-world analogues of Terry Southern's novel Blue Movie relate, speculation on what the co-writer/director might have cut from the film had he survived until its theatrical release, and whether or not the Illuminati covertly murdered Kubrick for revealing the real-world secrets of their sex orgies on film.Smith is writer/director of the films Blue Highway and Turkey Bowl, which debuted at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival. Currently in development on his third feature, you can find Kyle and his film thoughts on Letterboxd.Ali is co-editor of recent films for Terrence Malick including A Hidden Life, Song to Song, and Voyage of Time. Filmmaker Kyle Smith joins this week to discuss Mike Leigh, the playwright-turned-Palme d'Or-winning writer/director, his 1999 film about Gilbert, Sullivan, and the first production of The Mikado. On this episode we discuss the movie Roger Ebert called “One of the best films ever made about life in the theater,” Leigh's lengthy rehearsal and improvisation process to write the films, how that gives the light effortless feel of “life happening,” and that influence on Smith's filmmaking. Also: How a plotless near-three-hour movie can be so rewatchable, Leigh's early work of filmed plays for the BBC, and how this film in conjunction with Anne Washburn's play Mr. Burns gives a macro view of Gilbert & Sullivan's legacy in human storytelling.Kyle Smith is writer/director of the films Blue Highway and Turkey Bowl, which debuted at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival.
