The end is here, it is time to announce and celebrate the winners of this series. We will begin the show talking about the Hedge Knight II since it was a book I gave Judge Jay at the end of the previous program, and I wanted to have one last discussion on comics. We will then proceed to the Awards Ceremony and find out who ranked at the top of our rankings over the past six months of content. I only felt it fitting to end the show talking about the Fallout Series. What better way to end this series on July 4th? Independence Day, known colloquially as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence, which was ratified by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America.
Harry Potter trifft auf The Boys. XTREME! AWESOME! Those are just a couple of the words to describe comics in the 90s. Join us on our continuing series of comic books through the decades as we jump in with our JNCO jeans and brightly colored fanny packs. Death of Superman, The Man Who broke the Bat, and the crazy mercenary that had horribly drawn feet join the fold as Image and independent publishers dominated the comic book landscape. We discuss some of the biggest events of the time and how a failed attempt for Jim Shooter to buy Marvel led to the creation of Valiant comics and so much more. Join us as we chat about the rise of Trade Paperbacks, Variant Covers, and how every gimmick that arose in the 90s has made its way back into mainstream comics today. #comics #popculture #podcast https://linktr.ee/MagicCityPodcast Appease the Algorithm Gods! The Boys sit down to discuss the comic book "The Butcher of Paris" by Stephanie Phillips and Dean Kotz, from Darkhorse Comics. They also talk about Radio Dramas, Sleeze Rock, Old Man Logan, MAUS and more. About the book: In Nazi occupied Paris, the death toll mounts, but the killer's motive and whereabouts remain unknown. The investigation uncovers a name—a doctor, whose skill and expertise match that of the meticulous crimes. But is this doctor the sadistic killer operating in the shadows, or just another victim of the Gestapo? Find out these answers and more in another exciting installment of Around Comics TRADETalks.

At one point in time, the only way to enjoy your comic books was to sit down, hold them in your hands and turn the pages. If you wanted to read a specific storyline, you had to dig through your collection and pull out all the related issues. That's how it was done. Then the age of Trade Paperbacks and Digital Comics arrived… No longer did you have to hunt through your collection for a story. No longer did you have to bag and board your newest comic acquisitions. It's been said that the world of printed comics is dying. Your hosts have something to say about that during this episode revolving around The Ever Changing World Of Comics! Well, here we are. Another week gone by. It's been hectic at Trail Estates and I'm a running to and fro with all the activities the daughter is involved in. I'm not complaining though...much anyway. I wanted to discuss mental illness awareness some more. I know, broken record right? Thing is, I'm free. I've come clean and I discuss my issues freely. Most people are not. They hide it and it can cause more damage that way in most folks' opinion (including my own). So, I plead for you to get help yourself and discuss this or to reach out to/for others you know who are dealing with it. Get help. Come clean. Now, onto stuff I'm into. We're really digging on Schitt's Creek. If you've not, I suggest you give it a chance. I've discussed this with homeboy Mikey and he's not into it at all. Then again, he doesn't care for Eugene Levy...so... Anyway, it's a fun show and a slow burn when it comes to comedy. Not for everyone and not slapstick really at all. I dig it. Catherine O'Hara and Chris Elliot also star. Oh, and Eugene Levy's own son (plays his son) is in it as well. I also recently watched "Knives Out" and really loved it. The whole family was into that one actually. I hear there's a sequel in the works and I know we cannot wait. "Inception" was a film I've been meaning to see for, well, a decade now. Finally watched it the other night. I wouldn't say I loved it. It's pretty confusing and difficult to follow at times. I am intrigued by it, however, and will be checking in on it again soon. Hard to believe this film is ten years old already. Great cast. Finishing up the book "The Outsider" by Stephen King again. Almost done. Good thing too, as there's now an HBO series based upon it. Have to check that one out. Other than that, some new comics are around and I'm into the Joe Hill DC series books (he's the son of Stephen King ya know) and I'm becoming more excited about the Netflix adaptation of "Locke and Key." It's from a great comic series and I suggest you go out and get those Trade Paperbacks when you get the chance. That's all for now folks. I'll catch up with you again next week. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedadsnarkpodcast/message

This week we're chatting with lifelong nerd, designer of everything at Jordandene, and my husband Joey Ellis. In addition to doing all of the hand-lettering, branding, and design work at Jordandene, Joey and his two partners run the agency GrandArmy. They've done lots of cool design work (does the lettering in Taco Bell's Live Mas look familiar?), and people have even gotten tattoos of some of their branding projects. Joey has been a pretty big nerd for his entire life, carrying his comic books, drawings, and action figures around in a briefcase as an elementary school kid (because Bruce Wayne did it). He always loved Batman the most, starting with Batman: The Animated Series. He didn't have any superpowers and became the best through hard work, determination, and, you know, a lot of money. The world of Batman is overwhelming, so Joey put together a list of animated movies and graphic novels that someone new to the world could easily jump into. Or, you could watch the Lego Batman movie, which is just a real treat all around. Thanks again for hanging out with us, and please help show your support by subscribing, leaving a review, or checking out our Patreon at www.patreon.com/sartorialgeek. Stay nerdy. Batman Animated Movies for Newbies: - Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (A prequel to The Animated Series, which is one of the best on-screen versions of Batman) - Batman: Year One - Batman: Gotham Knight (A collection of shorts by a group of anime creators) - Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (Set very far into the future of The Animated Series continuity. Very dark) - Batman: Under the Red Hood - Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (Part 1 & 2) Batman Graphic Novels & Trade Paperbacks for Newbies: - Batman: Year One (Frank Miller's update to Batman's origin story.) - Batman: The Long Halloween (Another early days story that introduced the Falcone crime family later seen in Nolan's Batman Begins. Also shows Harvey Dent's transformation into Two Face) - Batman The Dark Knight Returns (Frank Miller's take on an aging, messed up Bruce Wayne dealing with an increasingly bizarre, violent future) - Joker (Lee Bermejo's take on the Joker. Super brutal. Super violent. Was a huge influence on The Dark Knight's depiction of the Joker.) - Batman: Noel (A sequel of sorts to Joker - Bermejo's take on A Christmas Carol through a Gotham City lens) - The Killing Joke (Alan Moore explores Batman's complex relationship with the Joker. Amazing art by Brian Boland. Also tells the story of how Barbara Gordon loses her ability to walk, which starts her on the path to becoming Oracle.) - Batman Vol. 1-9 (Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's recent iconic run on Batman) Join our Patreon for bonus gifts and content!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/sartorial-geek. Adam Graham talks about the benefits and drawbacks of comic book trade paperbacks Transcript:Trade Paperbacks, threat or menace? Find out on today's episode of the Classy Comics Podcast.Welcome to the Classy Comics Podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise, Idaho here is your host, Adam Graham. Welcome to the Classy Comics Podcast from Boise, Idaho; this is your host Adam Graham. This is something I will try to do infrequently – mostly I want to be talking about comic books and trade paperbacks, but sometimes there can be a general comic topic that's worth a talk, particularly since part of my vision for the show is to talk to folks who are not necessarily been into collecting or reading for quite some time. When you say reading a comic book, people will often imagine you sitting there with their traditional comic book with its glossy cover held together by a staple or two, and generally with a few ads in there. I think of that specific experience I've only read one in all of 2017 and that was an issue of The Tick. For most of my comic reading I've either been reading from trade paperbacks or I've been reading from digital. And digital's another conversation; today we're going to focus on trade paperbacks which collect multiple issues. Generally a small trade might collect three or four issues of a comic while a larger one might collect twelve, and then there are some fairly large collections or omnibuses such as those that come from Marvel that can have twenty or thirty different issues in it. Trade paperback collections have become a lot more ubiquitous in recent years. It used to be that only select comics were collected together and sold in trades; now pretty much any major ongoing series that either DC or Marvel does is turned into a trade paperback, and there's a lot of work being done on the back catalogue of both companies to bring even some titles that hadn't been collected in trade together so that collectors can have them easily in one place, and those who haven't read them can discover them for the first time. So, it's a great way to read on up on classic comics and older comics that you just could not buy on an individual basis without a lot of money. And in general the trade collections can save quite a bit. Remember pretty much every DC Comic is going to be $2.99 an Issue, except for those that are more, and every Marvel comic is going to be $3.99 an Issue. Most trades that I get I end up paying about two dollars per issue for the comics that are in the trade. You also can more easily avoid bad titles – if you see a comic series starting and from some of the descriptions it sounds interesting, a trade can be a better option just because you can get an overall impression of what people actually thought of the comics in the trade, and based on what you hear you can have a really good idea of whether this is going to be something that will work for you. It's also important to remember that most ongoing comic book series today, particularly from the Big Two are written for the trade. That means that the comics are drawn with the idea that this is going to be in a four or seven-part book, and thus many issues are less standalone and more chapters in a book, and this can lead to some frustration for those who get individual issues one at a time. For example, an issue might really not progress the action much but might show some character moments which – if you've been waiting two weeks to a month for the story to move – is a little bit annoying; but if it's merely a section in a graphic novel you've gotten, well then it's not a big deal, it might actually contribute positively to the reading experience. Also with a trade paperback you can evaluate a series as a whole which can be crucial. You take, for example,
