The Viking Age, spanning roughly from the late 8th century to the early 11th century, was marked by the Scandinavian Norsemen's explorations, trade, and raiding across wide swaths of Europe. Among the territories they influenced, England stands out prominently. The Vikings didn't just raid; they settled, integrated, and even ruled parts of England, leaving a lasting legacy on its culture and history. The first recorded Viking raid in England was the attack on the Lindisfarne Monastery in 793 AD. This event is often considered the beginning of the Viking Age. The brutality and suddenness of the attack shocked the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and marked the start of numerous raids along the English coast. In 865 AD, a large Viking force known as the Great Heathen Army, led by Ragnar Lothbrok's sons—particularly Ivar the Boneless, Halfdan Ragnarsson, and Ubbe—invaded England. Over the next several years, they systematically attacked and conquered several Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, including Northumbria, East Anglia, and much of Mercia. The Viking invasions led to the establishment of the Danelaw, a region of England under Viking control. The term "Danelaw" refers both to the geographical area and the set of legal principles under which the Vikings governed. This area included modern-day York (then Jorvik), East Anglia, and the Five Boroughs (Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Nottingham, and Stamford). Ragnar Lothbrok: Although much of his life is shrouded in legend, Ragnar is said to have been a fearsome Viking chieftain and warrior. His sons continued his legacy in England. Ivar the Boneless: Known for his cruelty and strategic acumen, Ivar played a significant role in leading the Great Heathen Army and establishing Viking rule in England. Guthrum: Another prominent Viking leader, Guthrum, converted to Christianity after being defeated by Alfred the Great. He was baptized as Æthelstan and ruled East Anglia until his death. Alfred the Great, the King of Wessex, is renowned for his defense against the Viking invasions. After several defeats, Alfred managed to turn the tide at the Battle of Edington in 878 AD, where he defeated Guthrum. The subsequent Treaty of Wedmore led to Guthrum's conversion to Christianity and a temporary peace. Over time, the Anglo-Saxons gradually regained control over Viking-occupied territories. Edward the Elder and his sister, Æthelflæd, played crucial roles in reclaiming lands from the Vikings. By the mid-10th century, King Edgar the Peaceful ruled a unified England. In the early 11th century, the Viking influence surged again with Sweyn Forkbeard, who became King of England in 1013. His son, Cnut the Great, ruled a vast North Sea Empire that included Denmark, Norway, and England. Cnut's reign (1016-1035) is often seen as a period of stability and integration of Viking and Anglo-Saxon cultures. The Viking presence in England significantly impacted its language, culture, and legal systems. Many English words of Norse origin entered the language, and Viking place names are common in the areas they settled. The Vikings also influenced the development of the English navy and military tactics. The Viking Age left an indelible mark on English history. From fearsome raiders to rulers and settlers, the Vikings' legacy can be seen in the cultural and historical tapestry of England. Their story is one of conquest, integration, and lasting influence.

Ragnor Lothbrook is a legendary Viking figure who straddled the line between myth and reality. His adventures and deeds appear in the Viking sagas, but there is little hard evidence for his existence and according to the different sagas he dies on multiple different occasions and in a variety of grisly ways. His sons including Ivar the Boneless, Halfdan Ragnarsson, Björn Ironside, Ubbe and Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye are undoubtedly real historical figures and themselves lived extraordinary lives. Was Ragnar really their father though or were these men trying to harness the power of legend by claiming descent from this great figure? To help explore that question Dan is joined by historian and author Justin Pollard. Amongst many other exciting projects, Justin was the historical advisor on the hit show Vikings which brought the story of Ragnar Lothbrok into the popular consciousness. Just and Dan discuss what evidence there is for the existence of Ragnar Lothbrok, the lives of his sons and how he goes about creating historical drama.

Without a clear sense or our roots, can we as easily take flight? Live our destiny? Realize our potential? Life coach Ubbe MacLean and I discuss what becomes possible when we dig deep to discover the roots of our ancestry. In today's globalized world, so many of us look "out" - to cultures and traditions that pique our fascination precisely because they are so different from our own. Ubbe defies this pattern - he has gone about 1,000 years back to the Northern European roots of his ancestors, which trace back to Viking culture, and now consciously weaves this heritage into his everyday life and his work with clients. He intelligently blends what he has discovered with his extensive training in psychotherapy and coaching. The result? Ubbe's leadership offers a potent blend of ancient and modern wisdom and answers a collective call for rediscovering our roots. In today's episode, he discusses his exploration into his cultural heritage, how it's imbued him with a strengthening kind of dignity, and how we can all embark on our own journeys, to harness the strengths and virtues offered to us by our ancestral line.

Before we get back to the sagas of the Icelanders, we're pausing once again to provide you with some of the more interesting history and stories behind the History Channel's Vikings. We've got two lengthy Saga Briefs for you chock full of Vikings goodness ripped straight from the medieval sources that inform the show. We've already covered The Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok, his death poem, Rollo and the Vikings in Paris, and the mythology surrounding the blood-eagle. This time around we've got our eyes on the Ragnarssons. As you'll learn, there are a lot of them. So many, in fact, that we don't even get to your favorites in this episode. That's right, you'll have to wait until next time to hear all about Ivar the Boneless, Ubbe, Bjorn, and Hvitserk. But never fear, there's plenty here to keep you entertained. Learn all about the origins of Sigurd's Snake-in-the-Eye. Discover the daring deed of Rognvald Ragnarsson. Ooh and aah over Ulvi's brief moment in the sun. Hear all about Hastein Ragnarsson, one of Ragnar's greatest and most trusted sons. And then there's Eirik and Agnar, Fridleif, Radbard, Dunwat, and even a few daughters to consider. There's also a good bit in here about Lagertha. We hope you enjoy! Credits: Intro - VioDance cover of "If I Had A Heart" by Fever Ray with Hardanger Violin Closing Music - Logan Kendell's folk cover of "If I Had A Heart" by Fever Ray. To purchase a copy of the song, visit Logan Kendell's bandcamp page. Be sure to check out his other music while you're there. I highly recommend his cover of Cruzados' "La Flor de Mal."
