In this old Japanese legend – a fisherman, ‘Urashima Taro' is rewarded by the Emperor of the Sea, for rescuing a small turtle. He's taken underwater to the Palace of the Dragons where he meets the Emperor's daughter, and spends three happy years. The daughter gives Taro a box to take home with him, but makes him promise not to open it. Listen to Japanese storyteller Masako Carey, and see if he keeps his promise. (It's a sad ending.)

Mary Adams Urashima is a historian, former journalist and freelance writer, with thirty years in media, governmental and public affairs, and author of Historic Wintersburg in Huntington Beach (History Press). She chairs the grassroots preservation effort to save the Furuta Gold Fish Farm and Wintersburg Japanese Mission property in Huntington Beach, known as Historic Wintersburg. Mary identified and named the historic property, which was designated one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in 2014 and one of America’s National Treasures in 2015. Mary has been researching and working to save Historic Wintersburg for almost nine years. Historic Wintersburg marks more than a century of Japanese American history and represents pioneer arrival and settlement in the American West, Orange County’s agricultural history, pioneer achievement, and the struggle for civil liberties. Everyone associated with the Furuta farm and Wintersburg Japanese Mission faced alien land laws and was forcibly removed from California and incarcerated during World War II.

#Japanese Folk Stories - The Story of Urashima The Fisherman Lad Author: Yei Theodora Ozaki Link: bit.ly/JapaneseStory **SHOUTOUTS at the end!** Go on, leave an iTunes Review: bit.ly/iTunesReviews Welcome my folk story lovers! I have you an old 1908 Japanese Folk Story episode - letters compiled by one friend of author Yei Theodora Ozaki into a compilation of traditional Japanese folk tales. And this time I have for you The Story of Urashima The Fisherman Lad. His kind heart leads him on a journey to another realm. A realm of #japanese #myth and #legend. Being kind opens up doors for Urashima, doors that can never be closed, and once he realises the cost of entering such a realm, there's no going back, or so it seems. Join me on today's episode of the strange and out of this world with an old #Japan #folkstory. Thank you so much for listening the #podcast mates! Vom Fischer und der Prinzessin vom Drachenschloss
These are two stories from Japanese fairy tales. I don't want to ruin them, so I can't say too much, but they are amazing. One is about a boy who draws pictures of cats, much to the detriment of his job and a ridiculous amount of ancient books. The other story is about a kind fisherman who saves a turtle and has his whole world turned upside down. On the creature of the week, it's a naked guy who, if he helps you, just thank him and be on your way. Seriously, who cares if he could have cut the grass more? He did it for free, and it's not worth losing your legs over. Patreon! Patreon!
