Ready Player One? In our latest episode, Dr. Keith Brunt (Dalhousie University) interviews lead author Dr. Joanne DiFrancisco-Donoghue (New York Institute of Technology) and expert Dr. Saurabh Thosar (Oregon Health and Science University Hospital) about a new article published in the AJP-Heart and Circ Call for Papers on Exercise, Physical Activity, and Cardiovascular Health. DiFrancisco-Donoghue et al. raise an important question about the risk for college level e-sport athletes, professionals, and recreational gamers to develop deep vein thromboses. Using Doppler ultrasound recordings of blood flow velocity and volume, the authors found a decrease in both measures when e-sport play was interrupted with a 6-minute walk. DiFrancisco-Donoghue and co-authors found a similar decrease when e-sport athletes wore compression sleeves during play. Could either a break in play for a brief walk or wearing compression stockings help e-sport athletes avoid the risk of deep vein thrombosis caused by prolonged sitting? What effects might this have on executive function, improvement in game play, and for that matter, sleep? If you are a recreational gamer or hoping to go professional, a casual e-sports spectator, or even an active member of the military sitting for prolonged periods of time, you don't want to miss this engaging and enlightening episode! Listen now. Joanne DiFrancisco-Donoghue, Kelly Borges, Timothy Li, Olivia Ballone, Hallie Zwibel, and Peter C. Full Hour | In today's third hour, Dom leads off by discussing a local story, telling of some beef between local sports reporter Jim Salisbury and Philadelphia Phillies Outfielder Nick Castellanos, with Salisbury grilling the player over his despicable performance since joining the team. Then, Dom and Dan discuss a new athletic option offered at Holy Family University, with an announcement of the introduction of a new e-sports team. Then, Senator Doug Mastriano, Republican candidate for Governor in Pennsylvania, rejoins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss his campaign and push to become Governor. First, Dom asks Mastriano to reintroduce himself to the audience, telling of his long resume of service, serving and teaching for the U.S. Army. Then, Dom asks Mastriano for his top issues, with Mastriano stressing the importance of law and order in particular, alluding to the ridiculous spike in crime in Philadelphia. After that, Giordano asks Mastriano about why he hasn't utilized the downfalls of progressive policies here in Philadelphia to his advantage, with Mastriano previewing multiple upcoming trips to the Southeastern Pennsylvania region. Then, Giordano gets Mastriano's thoughts on abortions, particularly which exceptions he'd allow, with Mastriano explaining that he's a Constitutionalist first and foremost, and that his personal thoughts don't matter, telling that the decision on abortion would be left completely to the voters if he were elected. There are some that consider Video Gamers to be one of the largest unreached people groups on the planet. While it can be discussed that Gamers may not officially be a people group, we can wholeheartedly agree that Gamers need Jesus. And that's the heart of Pastor Souzy. Lead Pastor of God Squad, Pastor Souzy has grown his digital-only church by reaching, shepherding and discipling Gamers. Using Twitch Streams and Discord Communities, God Squad probably looks nothing like your church, but that's not a bad thing. So let's learn something. Let's learn about Twitch, about Streaming, about Video Game Culture. Let's learn the mindset about video gamers, and how we can use digital to be the church of video gamers. What were some of hidden factors that led to the fall of Atari and the golden age of classic video game consoles? Did the world at large really understand video games at all? In this episode we set out to prove, through the lens of some truly awful products and ideas, that the industry might have killed itself. The back pages and new products sections of Electronic Games magazine in 1982 and 1983 were filled with all sorts of products, services and offers that were dubious at best, and possibly, criminal at worst. It appears that in the very early years of video games all sorts of people jumped at the chance to try to sell all manner of items to the newly minted audience of “arcaders” and “joystickers” (the terms Electronic Games editors used to refer to “gamers” in the early days). Below are some the most useless/interesting and bizarre products that we could dig up in those pages: Notes: See "Enhanced" Youtube version:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDXF4-gpPhc Read Full Story With Photos: http://www.8bitrocket.com/?p=8026
Yes, you can get a college scholarship for playing video games. So what's it like? E-athletes practice five hours a day in a specially outfitted room plush with sponsored gear called the arena. The football team is a little jealous. (This is part 2 of 2 about the world of video games going mainstream go here for part 1 about middle aged gamers). The Scholarships The athletic director of Robert Morris University in Illinois had a bold idea. He wanted to expand college sports to include video games. And he wanted to do it in a big way: with scholarships. The result was a deluge of applicants clamoring to get into the first ever college to enroll varsity e-athletes. One of the players already dropped out to go pro. Another says his mother flat out didn't believe him when he said it was possible to get a scholarship for gaming. Now she proudly tells her friends her son is a competitive collegiate e-athlete. One student late for practice found his You Tube privileges were taken away in the gaming arena so he would focus more on his game playing. The Game The Robert Morris Eagles play League of Legends. It is by far the most popular video game for organized competition drawing in tens of millions of fans to watch top matches. It is incredibly complicated and hard to master. Each player chooses from 121 different characters called champions, each with their own set of powers that top players need to memorize. Then teams of five take on other teams of five and basically try to destroy each other. It's called a “multiplayer online battle arena game” or MOBA for short. As with physical sports, the school can earn money back with a winning program. How that works is a little different though with video games. It is most certainly not an NCAA sport, so the school's team can compete for cash prizes and if it wins, the school keeps the take.
