This week we're covering the film Voices Carry straight out of Cinequest 2025. This film is written and directed by Abby Brenker and Ellyn Vander Wyden. Looking for a new beginning, Sam and Jack leave Boston and move into Sam's childhood home on a picturesque lake in New Hampshire. Despite the natural beauty and small-town charm, the couple struggles to adjust. Sam wrestles with her stagnant career and is forced to confront the traumatic events of her past. In Abby Brenker and Ellyn Vander Wyden's VOICES CARRY, which premiered last Saturday, March 15 at the 2025 Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California, a woman (Gia Crovatin) returns to her lakefront childhood home, confronting the difficult memories of her mother's untimely death.Discovering an old diary in the shed, she's shocked to discover that not only did her mother write in it shortly before her death, but also did a slew of women, spanning back to the 1700s. What starts as historical intrigue devolves into potentially supernatural obsession as the history of trauma and secrets within the diary's pages leave her swearing she can hear the voices of these women calling to her from across the lake.VOICES CARRY is, at times, too tepidly paced for its own good. Are these voices real? Are they hallucinations of a stressed mind? This tightrope requires a delicate balance to get right but the movie almost goes too delicate, leaving the mystery up to expository dumps and a flurry of beautifully shot scenes that leave me cold.Don't get me wrong. I love Mauricio Vasquez's cinematography, mainly its voyeuristic approach and techniques that help translate the protagonist's state of mind. This lakefront property looks like a travel ad at times, it's so pristine.I think with this movie, the mileage may vary depending on where expectations lie. For those interested in how woman's mental health difficulties are misdiagnosed throughout history - witchcraft, hysteria, possession, etc. - this story may provide a valuable perspective. I just wish the movie also provided a propulsive quality.---Please rate, review & subscribe to The Movies wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow The Movies on Instagram & Bluesky: linktr.ee/themovies_pod

We must not take for granted how critical these media activities are to the joy of celebrating our humanity and to the responsibility of sustaining our freedom.
Singer-songwriter Aimee Mann explains creativity, writing musicals, knowing how to pick a good writing partner and how Jay should weather the crumbling TV streaming world. Just become a critically acclaimed voice of a generation. Easy peasy. Bio: Aimee Mann is a Grammy- and Oscar-nominated singer-songwriter. Mann fronted the band 'Til Tuesday with their mega hit, “Voices Carry” then went solo making 9 amazing albums including the soundtrack from the critically acclaimed film Magnolia which featured “Save Me.” She has also made memorable cameo appearances in TV and films such as The Big Lebowski and Portlandia. Her latest album is the impeccable, “Queens of the Summer Hotel.” But her crowning achievement is doing my podcast. From Straw Hut Media
Greg Warren is back in studio with us for a second day. John Lydon from Auberle calls in to promote their 19th annual Voices Carry event next week.
In the Spring of 1983, 'Til Tuesday transformed from a new band into the winners of Boston's Rock & Rumble competition. After quickly securing a deal with Epic Records, they released their debut album Voices Carry. Thanks to regular airplay on MTV, the title track rose to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sadly, this unique band could never again match the success of the song. This week, we're joined by writer, musician, and Aimee Mann enthusiast Daniel Corey to discuss why we believe 'Til Tuesday's voices should have carried them much higher up the charts. Throughout human history, men have been the storytellers and the scribes. How might our cultures have changed if we also had versions of herstory to study and learn from? Who might we be today if matriarchy guided our dreams, ambitions, and basic needs? To ponder these questions and understand how women can lean into their power, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with two authors who research stories of power, equality, and respect. Elizabeth Lesser shares stories of women in history who have had their voices quelled in her book, Cassandra Speaks: When Women are the Storytellers, the Human Story Changes . Donna Freitas discusses the years of research she assembled which led to her book, Consent: A Memoir of Unwanted Attention .

Voices Carry....but they also entertain....On this episode we're getting a little family friendly as we dive into the world of 'Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon' which is in select theatres now.Borrowing from the spirit of films like Frozen & Moana; Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon is the epic journey of a young hero and her Spirit Guides, "Dillo" a cute and humorous armadillo and "Vaca" a goofy oversized tapir, who embark on a quest to save their home in the spectacular Amazon Rainforest.Fun for the whole family; Ainbo understands the importance of representation, enviromentalism and most of all, the importance of family. In advance of its release in theatres we got the pleasure of sitting down with voice actor Joe Hernandez about his role as 'Vaca', the delicate nuances involved in being a voice actor, how it got into the business and bonding over a shared love of the professional wrestling business....
