Daļa no viņiem izdzīvos.

Music Studio Startup: Helping music teachers thrive as entrepreneurs
Today's episode is part one of a super interesting two-part conversation with Sam Reti, a music teacher and the visionary behind the popular online music lesson platform Muzie.Live. In this episode, Sam shares how a college class at Berkeley, countless Uber and Lyft rides, and a whole lot of Chipotle burritos helped launch his first business. And why learning when to quit was just as important as knowing when to keep going. We talk about how his first app idea morphed into a second and then a third, which is the Muzie we know today. We talk about the decision to bootstrap instead of raising investor money. How Sam adapted when his original business idea didn't pan out, and what he's learned about growing a customer base organically in the music education world. Sam gives an honest behind the scenes look at startup life complete with all the messy unglamorous realities you don't usually hear about. Here's my conversation with Sam.

The Science Minister says merging our two Government weather agencies will free up millions of dollars. Incoming legislation will bring NIWA and MetService together before the end of the year. Shane Reti says the merger will resolve the structural issue that's resulted in duplication and conflicting advice. He told Mike Hosking they'll merge capabilities, assets and services, and streamline back-office functions. Reti says they're projecting there'll be an extra $3 million a year as a result, which they'll drive back into weather forecasting. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Well, I might have been swanning about on holiday for an unseemly amount of time but the Government was back at work. You have already discussed, I have no doubt the PM's reshuffle of the cabinet, specifically Dr Reti losing Health to Simeon Brown in a bid to see change happening, change happening better, and there has been much chat about getting the country moving again. In the last couple of days, economist Paul Bloxham, the man who coined the “rockstar economy” phrase back in 2014, confirmed what we all know: New Zealand's economy has suffered the biggest hit in the developed world. Specifically, interest rate increases in response to post-pandemic inflation had pushed the country into a recession and unemployment increased sharply across the developed world. HSBC, for whom Paul Bloxham works, estimates suggest that New Zealand's economy had the largest contraction in GDP in 2024. So that was all inherited issues. This government was elected to put it right. How are they going? Well, not so great. The PM was on with Mike Hosking on the Mike Hosking Breakfast this morning and got a gee up from Mike. MH: My criticism of you is that you're too much yak and not enough do. If you don't like what the Commerce Commission is doing... CL: You're just all fired up because of Trump's executive orders, my friend. Because of? Yeah. MH: But that's what you need, exactly what you need are executive orders. You need to get a bloody marker pen and start scratching out a few signatures and doing some stuff. CL: And the difference between a presidential system and a parliamentary system is quite profound in that regard. MH: Look you and I are sick of the same things, you and I are sick of the same things. CL: I just say I think we've done more in a year than most governments. MH: But what I'm watching here is a Commerce Commission that's been looking at petrol and supermarkets and building products and everything else for eons and nothing's happening. Well things are happening, but I do get Mike's frustrations. We need to do better, and we need to do better faster. The first poll of the year —a Curia-Taxpayers Union poll at that— puts Labour ahead of National for the first time since the 2023 election. And it's no good blaming the last lot this year, it's going to have to be all on National and the coalition government to get cracking. I'm not entirely sure the new growth plan announced a couple of days ago by Christopher Luxon in his State of the Nation speech will do the business either. Focusing on tourism is not going to lead to long-term prosperity. Being a service industry, which is ultimately what tourism is, isn't going to lead to long-term prosperity. The rest of the world is pushing back against over tourism, hell, we were pushing back against too many tourists back in 2019, so that's not going to do it. Foreign investment's good, but the right sort of foreign investment is what's required. And that's a little bit more difficult to find. We don't want to become tenants in our own land and good luck getting a lot of that past NZ First. Digital nomads, sure. This is something that's long overdue. People visiting New Zealand on short stays will be allowed to work remotely for their employers back home under the digital nomad scheme launched by the government yesterday. It's a popular concept overseas and it allows visitors to travel to New Zealand while continuing to work for their offshore employer. Internationally, the Harvard International Review puts the global economic value of digital nomads at US$787 billion per year. Which is great, we'll get a tiny share of that. Is that going to fix the economy? You know, we have a lot to offer in this beautiful country, as you will have seen yourselves. A lot. But we need to get better, and we need to get better faster. I was listening yesterday to a young man who was 27 saying the last of his friends have left to go overseas. He's got nobody left. He loves his job. He doesn't want to leave it, but he has no friends, they're gone. And while I accept that this is a rite of passage and many young New Zealanders head overseas, there are a lot of people who are seeking better opportunities overseas because they are not finding them in their home country. We have so much to offer, but is focusing on tourism the way to go? I did like the focus on science and a knowledge-based economy. Come in Helen Clark, what happened to that knowledge-based economy? But that is where New Zealand made its name, New Zealand made its fortune was around the science. Science, scientific brains – entrepreneurs have been leading this country for such a long time, since refrigerated shipping. That's what made our fortune and that's where our fortune lies. That, I agree, is where the focus needs to be. But that takes time and I'm not entirely sure that this government has got the amount of time it needs to turn this country around. Experts are wondering about the future of New Zealand's health sector after the Prime Minister made some changes in Cabinet. Chris Luxon stripped Shane Reti of his Health Minister portfolio and handed the role over to Simeon Brown instead. Meanwhile, Nicola Willis is picking up a new Economic Growth role, and Chris Bishop became the Minister for Transport. The Prime Minister says he hasn't lost confidence in Shane Reti despite sacking him as Health Minister. Dr Reti was a major casualty of Sunday's reshuffle, with Simeon Brown set to take on the role. Political commentator Ben Thomas spoke to Paddy Gower.
Simeon Brown is making his priorities clear as he prepares to take over as Health Minister. The portfolio has moved from Dr Shane Reti to Brown, moving Reti out of his fourth place in the National Party rankings. Brown indicated the targets bought in by Reti show things are beginning to stabilise but said "we really need to focus on delivery." He joins the show to discuss what he will bring to his new role. Health Minister Shane Reti is expected to be demoted in today's surprise Cabinet reshuffle. Prime Minister Chris Luxon is set to reveal some new changes to personnel and portfolios later this afternoon - and it's believed Shane Reti will be the first casualty of the new year. Newstalk ZB political editor Jason Walls says Luxon had not planned to do a reshuffle this early in the year, and it's unclear what inspired this change.

The Health Minister says he's dissatisfied by bargaining between workers and Health New Zealand. About 36,000 nurses, midwives and health care assistants have walked off the job until 7pm today. The Nurses Organisation says Health NZ has indicated its bargaining parameters are restricted to one percent of total employee costs. Health Minister Shane Reti says the workers are still strongly valued. "I'm a little disappointed that we're out in strike action so early in the bargaining and negotiating stage - but I would commend both parties to please get back to that bargaining table." The Health Minister says he's confident people aren't being booted from hospital waitlists so Health New Zealand can meets targets. A letter obtained by RNZ reveals some referrals from a Palmerston North orthopaedic clinic are being knocked back, due to a lack of resources. Shane Reti says checks are in place to ensure targets aren't gamed. He says Health New Zealand is investigating the letter. "As the 20 DHBs came together, there were a lot of different protocols - bringing them all into one place is what they're looking to do, but certainly, that is not the policy." The Dunedin mayor is disappointed but unsurprised the Health Minister will be a no show at a meeting tonight to protest any cuts to the Dunedin Hospital rebuild project. Shane Reti declined an invite to the rally at the Dunedin Town Hall. The government is rethinking the new hospital after revealing the price tag could blow out to 3 billion dollars. It's insisting the project be completed within the current 1.9 billion dollar budget, despite dozens of health specialists telling the government any downsizing could be fatal. Federated Farmers Southland President Jason Herrick spoke to Lisa Owen.

The Health Minister believes Health NZ is funded enough, it's just not spending it well. Treasury warned that health spending's been increasing rapidly due to demographics, with costs increasing faster than inflation due to an ageing population. The total health system's estimated to cost $30 billion this year. Documents show Treasury suggested further cost cutting at Health NZ could require changes to services. Shane Reti told Mike Hosking there are clearly some vacancies to fill on the front-line, and some back-office positions that may not be needed. Health now accounts for 7% of GDP, which Treasury predicts is likely to reach 10% by 2061. Reti says they want to be wise users of taxpayers' money. He says New Zealand generally sits in the middle of the OECD around its spending compared to GDP. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some shops selling nitrous oxide said they're still getting their heads around what a government crackdown could mean for them. The Health Minister Shane Reti is considering urgent options to try and stop people selling and using the substance which is often called 'Nos' or 'Nangs'. These include penalties of up to two years in jail or a hefty fine. It follows a Medsafe report highlighting the risks of using it to get high - but some shops told Checkpoint the crackdown won't make a difference to them, as they don't get many customers wanting to buy the canisters, Bella Craig reports.
The Health Minister says while they'd always like to spend more on health, the spending level is enough to deliver a high quality service. Dr Shane Reti has laid out his plans for delivering on health targets set in March. It includes more community infusion centres, more beds and operating theatres in public hospitals and greater use of private hospitals. Reti told Mike Hosking it also includes discharging patients seven days a week. He used the example of someone with an abscess who needs an intravenous push of antibiotics on a Saturday, if they're not in a facility that can discharge on a Saturday, they may wait until Monday. Christopher Luxon says his visit to Malaysia and South Korea last week was a success. The Prime Minister says it was an important chance to build connections with investors, like South Korean pension funds. He told Mike Hosking that in one of their five pension funds, who he spoke to, they have $2.5 billion dollars to invest. Luxon says they'd love to invest it in a four-lane highway from Auckland to Whangārei, but they didn't know about it. He also believes the public service is getting on board with what the Government's trying to do. Health Minister Dr Shane Reti has stepped in to scrap a policy prioritising young Māori and Pasifika people for some healthcare services in Hawke's Bay. Luxon says he's not sure why they had this criteria, and says it's good to see Reti sorting it. He told Hosking the public service has had to adjust to a new Government, with targets, action plans, and reviews for ministers. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Government says it has a clear focus on reducing cancellations for planned surgeries. Health NZ analysis shows about eight percent of elective surgeries are cancelled within 24 hours by a hospital. One in five elective surgery cancellations are caused by an acute or emergency case, needing to take precedence. Health Minister Shane Reti told Mike Hosking there's a number of things to work on. He says they include, ensuring theatres are being used properly, with the right surgeons, and making sure they're working on time. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Health Minister said the country's hospital system remains in crisis but he can't put a number on how many are relying on overnight telehealth services in the face of doctor shortages. Both Dargaville and Kenepuru hospitals are struggling to get doctors for after hours care as frontline services continue to be impacted by workforce shortages, Political editor Jo Moir reports.
