Helena Andrews-Dyer was the only Black mom in her parenting group, and when the Black Lives Matter movement emerged, she began to ask deeper questions. The senior culture writer at The Washington Post joins host Krys Boyd to discuss raising a Black child in a predominately white, upper-middle-class world, where her concerns about race led her to consider larger themes of belonging. Her book is “The Mamas: What I Learned About Kids, Class, and Race from Moms Not Like Me.”
"If you hit someone in the head with a stick that's considered violent, but if you hit all the Black people over the head with racism that's not considered violent." Society has always categorized people of color as violent but do Americans even really know the definition? Michael Harriot peels back the layers unveiling violence throughout our government and legal justice system that often leads back to the white community. theGrio Daily is an original podcast by theGrio Black Podcast Network. #BlackCultureAmplifiedSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we are answering the listener-submitted questions: As a white person, how can I speak up for BIPOC's in spaces that are almost entirely white and the BIPOC's don't always feel safe speaking up? My company employs almost no black people and there are none in my department. I have asked HR to seek out BIPOC as job candidates, but I'm afraid that doesn't do enough to support those who are already here. I don't want to ask the BIPOC to do all the work to advocate for themselves and I want to show support, but I'm not sure what is helpful and what might be overstepping. This discussion needed to be had because Kyren and I grew up in a place where we felt like our Black Identify had been pushed down to the point where we didn't know how to bring it back up in some ways. We've grown and still are growing as people and to be able to sit down and talk about it in a mature way was amazing. Topics include: Growing up in a predominately White Community, importance of community, and the growth we've made as individuals! This episode explores one person's perspective on how being from a bi-racial family can confuse the idea of race and self-perception. This episode is an important eye-opener about how strongly white culture and communities can condition people into feeling as though they need to conform to white standards. Katrina Kiritharan talks about white standards of beauty, success, and how a childhood based in White Connecticut sparked her journey of self-discovery as a woman, teacher, and person of color. I got goosebumps listening back to the clips in the introduction for this podcast – Michelle has such a fantastic outlook on life – I promise this one is a must listen! Michelle Perry’s father was black, but he left the family home when she was 3, and she grew up in her mother’s white Jewish community. As a child she had no black influences in her life at all. Michelle talks about how until she was 12 years old she thought she was white – it took meeting her first black people at school for her to realise she was black. We talked about how shocking that felt to her, how she processed the realisation, and the troubled times she went through before coming to terms with her biracial identity. We touched on current conversations about anti-racism efforts, and how white people can help by getting past their lack of knowledge and understanding, and by speaking out without fear. We also talked about how much language matters when white people refer to black and biracial people – Michelle clarified a few things for me there too. She has a very robust attitude to conversations about race that I found really refreshing and useful. Having used her experiences to support other young people in social work, and then taking on advisory roles in her corporate career, Michelle is now a life coach and teacher at successfuldiligence.com. She also has an amazing podcast full of useful tips and interviews to empower listeners to live a more empowered life. I’ve absolutely loved this free resource so do give it a listen at The Successful Diligence Podcast. During the year of 2020 there were several instances of Police Brutality, which is when a police officer exerts unnecessary or unwarranted force against a potential of actual detainee after a crime has been reported and the officer is inn the process of making an arrest or still in the process of investigating the appropriateness for an arrest to. be made. These instances have often times led to the death of unarmed individuals who have been impacted by such. This has been as issue that has affected citizens and non citizens in America for as long as the black community can remember. Blacks have identified as disproportionately effected by this atrocity against humanity as the arrests and deaths of black men and women at the hand of and in the custody the police have climbed tremendously in the past couple of years. Not only this, but the recording and postings of the incidents have also increased as social media platforms have moved to a different means posting by way of live videos. This is why the nation is on edge currently and this recording took place in June of 2020. #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd #JusticeForAhmad #JusticeForBreonnaTaylor #AmplifyMelanatedVoices --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
