The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin
Francesca Rudkin: There's a new horror movie out - in the form of Trump tariffs

The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin

Play Episode Listen Later May 10, 2025 4:12 Transcription Available

This week, a new disaster movie was announced. There isn't a script yet, because no one knows how it's going to end - and when it was announced, no one knew how to react. If there was ever a global WTF moment in film, it was Trump's announcement of a 100 percent tariff on films coming into the US which have been produced in foreign lands. As is often the case with President Trump, he asks a good question but comes up with the wrong answer. It's totally reasonable to look at how California can rebuild its entertainment industry. According to the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, around 18,000 full time jobs have been lost over the last three years, mostly in California. So, yes, sure, look at how to maintain production and jobs in the US - but in a way which will actually benefit the entertainment business. No one sees the tariff on films made overseas as the answer to their problems. Many US studios make films overseas. The industry was advocating for tax incentives and subsidies and all the other normal things countries, including New Zealand, have done to help their film industries. But throwing out a declaration on social media without further explanation isn't the way to convince an industry you have their best interests at heart. Share prices for Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount and Comcast fell after President Trump's announcement. And what does this proposal even mean? Is Trump talking about independent, foreign language films? Or large-scale studio films made overseas? And what if you produce the film from the States - say you write the script, pre-produced and post produce the film in the US, but take advantage of another country's tax incentives to shoot there? Is that a film made in a foreign land? What about a US produced film that uses Weta FX in NZ to create award winning visual effects - will it have to foot the tariff bill? What does this mean for streaming services? It's thought about 75 percent of Netflix content is made outside the US. Will TV shows be included? It's a minefield and it has thrown Hollywood into chaos. Films do not get made in a hurry, they are scheduled and planned years in advance. This is close to a writer's strike - in that Hollywood is being forced to take a breath and pause non-committed work, and it will take some time to get things started again. It's not just Hollywood who has been thrown, film industries around the world are in collective shock. In the UK, where new instalments of Marvel's Avengers and Spider-Man are set to shoot in London, the news was met with disbelief. Succession star Brian Cox called it “an absolute disaster”, and with a related workforce of around 200,000, many freelancers could find themselves jobless. New Zealand could suffer the same fate. Our industry has been bolstered recently by international productions, such as Chief of War, Minecraft and Brad Pitt's Heart of the Beast. We have an incredible industry here driven by a world-class crew who rely on these international projects. At the beginning of the year, Studio West in Auckland completed construction of its fifth sound stage, and Auckland Film Studios is also adding new stages - all so they can accommodate bigger international projects. The industry will be holding its breath that it can find a way to fill this new capacity. New Zealand's film sector generates NZ$3.5 billion annually, with around one third of revenue generated from the United States. So, yeah, what Brian Cox said - this could be a disaster. But we're grown ups - so keep calm and carry on seems to be the public response so far, but behind the scenes there is no doubt at least mild panic. Finding a way to convince Trump there are other approaches to Make Hollywood Great Again will be at the forefront of industry leaders' minds right now - let's hope they do. Otherwise, this story might have a miserable ending... LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why Television Kills Rationality | Amusing Ourselves To Death (Neil Postman)

Will TV be the death of us?'Amusing Ourselves To Death' by Neil Postman is an argument of why television as a medium lessens rational discourse and ultimately is a bad trade-off for society. The first part focuses on the past, in particular how typography is serious and encourages critical thinking. The second part demonstrates how TV is predominantly about entertainment and is negatively effecting politics, education, religion and advertising.I summarised the book as follows. "I loved this, but it's only for certain types of people. If you are fascinated by communication & languages, marketing & media or how society is impacted by change then you will like this. You'll also need a broad base to begin with as he covers many historical topics and references a lot of things."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. TV finally circled back with EstoBro to bring his take to the table, as the Gents bring a bonus episode full of sports takes for the week. The show opens up with the pair giving their respect to the late Bill Russell (2:20), who passed away not too long ago. Russell was considered one of the early greats in the NBA and is a major staple in Boston sports history. After the salutations, TV breaks down his adventure at Yankee Stadium (14:45) and what it means to be "behind enemy lines" as a fan of a rivaling sports team. The focus on baseball shifts to the MLB trade deadline (26:30) with EstoBro highlighting how Juan Soto shifting to the San Diego Padres was compared to LeBron James going to the Miami Heat, making 'Slam Diego' baseball's new 'Big Three.' After the Gents identify how the remainder of baseball season is going to wrap up, they are excited to announce that the podcast's fantasy football league has all contestants ready to participate (38:50). EstoBro and TV identify the Top 10 players included in ESPN's PPR draft kit, while also beginning the initial smack talk that comes with the territory. After making some light predictions, EstoBro and TV poke fun at the news of Aaron Rodgers revealing his MVP success came from taking psychedelics  (51:05), as Kyler Murray's saving grace for his mandatory study hours are covered for his eSports contract with FaZe Clan. Will TV repeat as fantasy football champion? Will EstoBro recollect the football fantasy stone in his Fantasy Gauntlet? Will a lucky listener win the league all together and appear on the show? CoG Studios, CA -- The LA Galaxy have announced that they're bringing back Baggio Husidic and Ashley Cole! That brings the roster up to 17 players and really starts to solidify positions. And they finalized the announcements on the same day as Major League Soccer announced their full 2018 schedule.  Your hosts, Josh Guesman and Britt Pergl are breaking down the two re-signings -- and don't think that Josh won't tell you about his pet peeve with regards to that word -- and try to determine whether or not these were needed players or bad decisions by a Galaxy staff that is on a short leash. Is Cole too old? Is Husidic not enough of an impact player? Or did the Galaxy need to sign these guys for what they can do on the field, but more importantly what they bring to the locker room off the field? Next, Josh and Britt will break down the Galaxy's 2018 schedule. There's one big problem with it, and Josh isn't shy about saying what it is. Will TV money ruin the in-stadium experience? Or is this just a temporary bump in the road?  Your hosts will also highlight some of the key games, including the Galaxy's first matchup with LAFC, and their big visits from San Jose, Atlanta United, and the Seattle Sounders! Finally, Britt will give you her honest take on the Galaxy's roster and Josh will read an interesting article that could have been written about the Galaxy but was instead written about Barcelona. How do these two teams cross paths so easily? We've got more than 60-minutes of Galaxy talk headed your way during a packed show.  Music Provided by Back Pocket Memory

The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Chris Herzberger is a producer and the VP of Live Theatricals for Universal. In this role, he oversees the day-to-day operation and long-term growth initiatives of the studio’s live stage division, which includes both Universal Stage Productions and DreamWorks Theatricals. Universal’s credits include the worldwide phenomenon Wicked, the Tony Award-winning adaptation of Billy Elliot, the Tony-nominated production of Bring It On: The Musical, and the Broadway premiere of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn. He began working professionally in the entertainment industry at the age of 14 when he cast as Billy in the much acclaimed Midwest premiere of Big, The Musical. In 2006, he began full-time work as the production assistant to Academy Award nominated writer/director/producer Gary Ross at Larger Than Life Productions and was subsequently promoted to Mr. Ross' 1st Assistant.  Universal has one of the best track-records of all the studios on Broadway (Wicked, Billy Elliot, etc.).  Chris talks about why he believes that is, as well as .  . . Why he gave up acting to pursue a producing career. How he works hard at demonstrating to Broadway and its players that Universal isn’t some big “evil” corporation, but just a group of passionate people who love the theater. Will TV shows inspire the next wave of Broadway shows? Why he doesn’t announce the shows he is developing. His “taste test” for what in the Universal catalog can be a musical and what can’t.   Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices.
