POPULARITY
Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with Hebrew University Prof. Elie Podeh. Podeh, the Bamberger and Fuld professor in the History of the Muslim Peoples, recently published a research article, "Israel’s 2005 Disengagement from Gaza: A Multilateral Move Under Unilateral Façade." In the article, we learn that while the Gaza Disengagement was a unilateral decision, it was carried out in partnership with the United States, Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. Among other revelations in the paper, we hear about the committees formed among the partners and their work on arrangements for border control, economic transition, and security cooperation. All elements were negotiated behind the scenes, especially under the guidance of American envoys and Egyptian mediators. Podeh weighs in on prime minister Ariel Sharon's decision not to allow the PA to take credit for any part of the diplomatic cooperation and the question of whether delegitimizing the PA's authority in Gaza may have contributed to the Hamas takeover in 2007. We speak about -- today, as the IDF is poised to retake the Gaza Strip, what the reasons were for the Disengagement 20 years ago -- and, in Podeh's opinion, why the Strip shouldn't be resettled by Israel. And so this week, we ask Prof. Elie Podeh, what matters now. What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. Golf writers Ron Green Jr. and Michael Bamberger joined the program this morning to talk about the major story lines coming out of the 2025 PGA Championship. Both talked about what makes Scottie Scheffler so great and that it would not surprise Bamberger to see Scheffler pull off the career grand slam by year's end. Between the two they also talked about how nice it was to have Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau in contention to give some buzz to the leaderboard.
In this episode of Zen and the Art of Real Estate Investing, Jonathan sits down with Jonah Bamberger, managing partner and executive chairman of Aulder Capital. Jonah shares the full arc of his real estate journey—from early value-add deals in Brooklyn to large-scale multifamily, hospitality, and international development in Portugal. What began as a side project with a friend quickly became a full-time business as the duo capitalized on post-2008 opportunities. Jonah dives into how Aulder Capital adapts to shifting markets, navigates regulatory hurdles, and chooses when to pivot between markets, asset classes, and hold periods. He also talks about the realities of managing thousands of units, dealing with difficult tenants, and maintaining high performance while still aiming to make a positive community impact. Whether you're an active investor, passive LP, or someone exploring international real estate, this episode offers a real-world perspective on how to scale with discipline and intention. In this episode, you will hear: How Jonah got started in Brooklyn with rent-stabilized, value-add multifamily deals Why Aulder Capital expanded from New York to the Southeast, Midwest, and even Portugal The pros and cons of holding vs. flipping, and how market conditions drive those decisions What it really takes to manage thousands of units and stay mission-focused How syndications allow newer investors to get exposure without the management stress Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet.

Parker who filed the first patent for a natural gas heating system so that people wouldn't burn their houses down and could finally sleep naked. But why did this revolutionary patent that is the basis of all forced-air heating systems never get built?? Then, Emily covers Rosalie 'Rose' Bamberger who founded one of the first, and best known lesbian activism groups, but we know little about her personal life. Don't let old bottles forgot and catfish white supremacists for the FBI because we're wining about herstory!Support the show

In order to survive in a hostile environment in the Middle East, Israeli decision makers developed a regional foreign policy designed to find ways to approach states, leaders and minorities willing to cooperate with it against mutual regional challenges. Examples include the Periphery Alliance with Iran and Turkey until 1979, cooperation with the Kurds, the Maronites in Lebanon, Jordan, Morocco, South Sudan and more. Contacts with these potential partners were mostly covert. The aim of this lecture, which is part of a Podeh's new comprehensive book on Israel's secret relations with its neighbours during the years 1948-2022 is two-fold: first, to offer a theoretical framework explaining the way Israel conducted its covert diplomacy; and second, to focus on several less-known episodes of such clandestine activity, such as Israel's ties with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf more broadly. Elie Podeh is the Bamberger and Fuld Professor in the History of the Muslim Peoples in the Department of Islamic and Middle East Studies, Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He serves as the President of the Middle East and Islamic Studies Association of Israel (MEISAI) and is a board member of Mitvim – The Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies. His areas of study include Egypt, inter-Arab relations, the Arab-Israeli conflict, education and culture in the Middle East, and Israeli foreign policy. He has published and edited twelve books and more than seventy academic articles in English, Hebrew and Arabic. His recent publications include Multiple Alterities: Views of Others in Middle Eastern Textbooks (edited with Samira Alayan, London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2018); The Third Way: Protest and Revolution in the Middle East (Jerusalem: Carmel, 2017) [in Hebrew]; Chances for Peace: Missed Opportunities in the Arab-Israeli Conflict (Austin: University Press of Texas, 2015); and The Politics of National Celebrations in the Arab Middle East (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2011).

Murphy is the man who invented golf's most original player-philosopher, Shivas Irons, from his landmark novel/treatise, “Golf in the Kingdom.” Ogilvy, who has read the book innumerable times, looks like he is talking to a golfing god as he listens to Murphy. Shipnuck and Bamberger, who once had the privilege of walking the Pebble Beach dunes with Murphy, ask Murphy about Woods and Hogan and why the game has such a hold on us, and explore why his slender book captures more about the game's complex beauty than any other golfing treatise ever written. Murphy is an utter inspiration and he is spellbinding in this podcast. Need a good listen? Allow us to offer, “Need A 4th?!”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
