Season 4: Race and Religion Bonus Episode: A Multicultural Christmas "Roundtables on Race" is back with a "Very Special Christmas" episode, when host the Rev. Kathy Walker is joined by friends and family to talk about the Christmas holidays and how we celebrate this beautiful season in different cultures. Her guests, the Rev. Every year around the holidays, sometimes even before Thanksgiving these days, you start to hear them. The age old songs to ring in the season at the end of the year. I'm talking about Christmas songs - some of which are hundreds of years old and some have become popular in our lifetimes. In stores, in schools, in offices, in the air you'll be hearing songs in every language to celebrate. And rock n roll has it's own classics in the genre - a great many legends and once hot bands have done their best to come up with an original (or original re-working of) song that will get them on the radio between November and January every year. Some are true classics, sung by legends. Some are catchy tunes from your favorite acts. Do you prefer John Lennon's Happy Christmas (War is Over) or Paul McCartney's A Wonderful Christmas Time? Do you prefer classics from the early age of rock n roll from Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry or The Beach Boys? The Wolf and Action Jackson are children of the MTV generation and in the 80s artists collaborated for a cause through Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas and the A Very Special Christmas albums. Each of the boys will walk through 10 up to their very favorite rockin Christmas classic and might give each other a hard time for some of them. But isn't that what the holidays are all about (It's time, for the airing of the greivances!) Released in 1987, "A Very Special Christmas" was a bit of a turning point for Christmas music, which both of us enjoyed back then and continue to enjoy to this day. We also take you back a long time ago (1978) to a galaxy far, far away to discuss the famously awful Star Wars Holiday Special. We've added plenty of audio clips because you wouldn't believe just how weird and awful it is otherwise. We even included Christmas in the Stars from 1980, which is perhaps most famous for being Jon Bon Jovi's recording debut. We're excited to share this episode with you, and we hope it brings you some well-deserved holiday joy. December is here and we're ready to get in the Christmas spirit! Or Dave is at least. Dave brings Caleb on a magical journey through a season of lights and traditions and a spiritually moving season, while Caleb keeps us grounded in the stress and consumerism of the holiday. But, one thing they can both agree on is that the nostalgia of 1987's A Very Special Christmas with artists like Run DMC, Whitney Houston, Madonna and U2 can immediately get you in the spirit of the season. Meanwhile, Dave suggests an album that may be new to many listeners, the Will Scruggs Jazz Orchestra's Song of Simeon: A Christmas Journey, which tries to bridge the gap between religious sentimentality and holiday pop that most Christmas music falls into. Grab some egg nog and a candy cane and join us for our first Christmas episode. Bing. Frank. Billie. Robeson. Aretha. Diana. Dionne. Whitney. Mariah. Michael. Marvin. Luther. It is rarified company, but indelibly classic and everlasting in the annals of American music and a club Luther Vandross' membership is permanent. Coupled with that voice, was Luther's unique ability to write and sing about love and the shared emotions we all feel in that search and enjoyment of love. Love of family, friends, the special someone–all were themes Luther explored with his music regularly, reaching many, becoming a staple in the most joyous moments of people's lives through his songs for the last two generations. At the time of Luther's death in 2005 following complications from a stroke two years earlier, Luther had been in entertainment for 35 years. From his introduction to the world as a singer on the first season of PBS's Sesame Street in 1969 to winning four Grammy Awards in 2004, Luther was a permanent and dynamic force in popular music. He crossed boundaries, starting with his earliest success as a background vocalist and arranger for David Bowie, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand, Donna Summer, Carly Simon, Judy Collins, J. Geils Band, Ben E. King, Ringo Starr and Chic. He produced records for Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick and Whitney Houston. He wrote one of the climactic musical numbers (“Everybody Rejoice”) for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and Academy Award nominated film The Wiz. Luther's reach is extensive enough that CBS Sports has used his rendition of “One Shining Moment” for their coverage of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament since 2003, and Luther performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXXI in January 1997 in New Orleans. For almost 25 years, from 1981 to 2005, Luther dominated the American R+B music charts like no other artist before or since. In that span Luther released eight (8) #1 R&B albums, seven (7) #1 R&B singles and another five (5) Top 20 R&B singles. He achieved crossover status with eight (8) Billboard Top 10 albums, including reaching #1 with 2003's Dance With My Father; and another five (5) Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles. Between 1981 to 1996, Luther Vandross released 11 consecutive platinum/double platinum albums on CBS/Sony's Epic Records label; and at the time of his passing in 2005, 13 of Luther's 14 studio albums had gone platinum or multi-platinum. Luther's success was not confined to the United States, with record sales of over 40 million worldwide since 1981, including four (4) Top 10 UK albums (one #1). In March 1989, Luther Vandross was the first male artist to sell out 10 consecutive live shows at London's Wembley Arena. Throughout his distinguished career, Luther Vandross was active in charitable causes with the United Negro College Fund and the NY Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, in addition to performing at numerous charity concerts, mostnotably Michael Jackson's Heal The World concerts in the 1990's. Luther also contributed the song “The Christmas Song” to the A Very Special Christmas 2 record released in 1992 to benefit the Special Olympics.Overall, Luther received 31 Grammy Award nominations, winning 8 times. Additionally, Luther won eight (8) American Music Awards, including Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist seven (7) times. Happy Holidays from the 90s! This week, we return to our (well, Austin's) favorite zip code for a Very Special Christmas episode featuring those smoldering "teens" of Beverly Hills, 90210, in which a pair of angels (yes, really) enact a It's a Wonderful Life pastiche that is less about aping the movie and more about pointing out that the movie just, you know, exists. Join Austin, Carolyn, and David as they discuss poofy hair, what it means to "trim" the tree, and question just how much 90210 is too much 90210. God may or may not intervene. So take a comical chug from your fifth of Jack to broadcast how drunk you are, then download and listen here, rate & review us on iTunes or listen via Podbean, Stitcher, Google Play and Spotify! Christmas music seems to be unstoppable with new songs and albums coming out every year, so Bill and Jennifer have a lot to talk about from traditional, classic tunes, whether they're overplayed and fall out of fashion; to innovative covers; to novelty and funny songs, new and old; to caroling and kids' TV shows; to artists who unexpectedly turn in an awesome song; and those we'd rather forget, especially if they included their kids on the recording. Whether Christmas is a happy or sad time for you, we've got recommendations. With co-host Bill Aho.Thoughts? Comments? Potshots? It's been … one year since the last Finest Worksongs Christmas epipod. But Matt & Matt are back to offer up a couple of Yuletide faves ….and both are quirky and fun - in their own special ways. Barenaked Ladies' “Barenaked for the Holidays” is quintessential BNL: moments of musical brilliance combined with moments of inane levity. “A Very Special Christmas 3” once again brought music's top heavy hitters together to put their own, uh, unique spins on holiday classics — and a couple (then) new ones. Giggle your way into the season with our season-ending epipod. And Merry Christmas from Marshmallow and the Duke!
Episode 136: Dead or Alive "Blue Christmas 2000" (2000) and U2 "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" (1987) Another year is coming to a close, and with the end of the year comes the holiday season. And with the holiday season comes Christmas songs, of course! So once again, Brian and Sarah close out the year by choosing a couple of songs to talk about, before they turn their full attention to holiday preparations and celebrations. And although the titles of both songs may look familiar, only one of them is a cover version. The first selection is "Blue Christmas 2000" by Dead or Alive. It's been quite a while since Brian and Sarah have talked about this band, so they're both eager to have a discussion about more than just the selected song. In fact, they go all the way back to 1988 to discuss the album Nude for a bit--which gives Brian the opportunity to tell a story from his freshman year in college that never fails to amuse and delight Sarah. The hosts go on to discuss the band's success in Japan; yet another version of this song (that still isn't the one you're thinking of); a synth voice whose name Sarah says sounds like a TV show; and, almost unbelievably, a recently-released new Dead or Alive album. The second song chosen for this episode is U2's version of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)." As this song was recorded and released in 1987, this selection ties in neatly (almost like a bow on top of a package!) with the four episodes released earlier this year, where Brian and Sarah, along with Tom Austin-Morgan of the podcast Banned Biographies (and now of the band Sham 69 as well!), discussed U2's iconic 1987 album The Joshua Tree. "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" was recorded by U2 for inclusion on the charity album A Very Special Christmas, so Brian searched through his archives and found his notes from 2018, when he and Sarah discussed several other songs from that album. He reminds us about the history of the album, the charity it supports, and the success it has had both on the charts and as a fundraising vehicle. And, since this selection is actually a cover version, the hosts take some time to discuss the original version of the song and its interesting history of being in the public's awareness, which includes not only a discussion about Darlene Love, but also a late-night talk show host. Additionally, Brian shares some very recent--and rather exciting-- chart information for the song. After the two song discussions, Brian and Sarah decide to share their top 10 favorite Christmas songs recorded by artists they've talked about on the podcast. How many of their favorites are on your list as well? What's up, dudes? Duane Bailey from Tinsel Tunes podcast and I break down this radical 1987 Christmas episode of the US version of Top of the Pops! There are a ton of great acts on it, though admittedly the second half is way better than the first! The Bangles? Check. How about Sting? Yep, got him too! U2, Kenny Loggins, Run DMC? They're all on here! Yes, but do you have the Judds? The Judds? Most definitely! So tease up your hair, put on some parachute pants and a Santa hat, and enjoy this episode! https://youtu.be/5PhlQbTDa3A
It's a real Choose Your Own Theme-venture this week. Summer? Sure, it's hot out, so we cooled off with two versions of wintery classic "Winter Wonderland". Olympics? Yeah, let's get back into the Very Special Christmas catalogue that benefits the Special Olympics, regardless of the fact that those games aren't happening until next year. Jason Mraz's last name means "frost" in Czech and Annie Lenox of the Eurythmics was born on Christmas day. Is that anything? This episode's ranking music is "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter. Not Jason Mraz, not The Fray, not Five for Fighting: just Canada's own Daniel Powter.

In this Very Special Episode of Sick Burns we look at one of the biggest charity records of the 1980's -- a decade full of charity records. “A Very Special Christmas” has been a holiday juggernaut since the first album was released in 1987. A compilation of Christmas standards from music's hottest 80's stars, the album was produced by Jimmy Iovine, who was inspired to make something special to commemorate this special time of year after losing his beloved father during the holidays. He called out the big guns, dusted off the Phil Spector playbook, and produced something truly special. All proceeds benefited the Special Olympics, which now counts VSPs many albums as its largest source of funding. It's a super boffo episode with coverage of not one but 15 different songs! Put on your elf hat, grab a cup of wassail and join us, won't you? Inspired by the music? For our second annual Christmas epipod, Matt & Matt discuss two albums that — each in their own way — set the standard for holiday collections. Phil Spector’s “A Gift for You” changed altogether how Christmas albums were created. Initially a flop, it is now essentially against how all Christmas albums are compared. Conversely, “A Very Special Christmas” introduced the idea of the philanthropic holiday album. It is a hodgepodge of hits and misses, masterpieces and head-scratchers alike. If nothing else, both albums capture their respective eras perfectly.
Rolling Stone calls it the greatest rock and roll Christmas song ever but it went largely unnoticed for a decade after coinciding with a tragedy. This is the story behind…Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Presented by Pizza Pizza! It was recorded in 1963 for the album A Christmas Gift to You from Phil Spector. The album gave Phil’s signature “wall of sound” treatment to well-known Christmas songs like Frosty the Snowman, Winter Wonderland and White Christmas. The one original song on the album was Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) with Darlene Love on lead vocal and Cher on the backing vocals. It was meant to be the album’s lead single, but it was released on November 22, 1963 – the same day US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The song never charted and the album was not the success Spector envisioned. But Spector thought he had something with Darlene Love’s incredible vocal performance, so after Christmas he brought Darlene back and they recorded a new version called Johnny, Please Come Home. Same music. Just different lyrics to tell a similar story without any reference to Christmas. That really didn’t work out either and the song virtually vanished for almost a decade. The album was re-released in 1972 on Apple Records – the label founded by The Beatles – and that’s what sent it on it’s path to becoming a Christmas classic. It peaked at #6 on Billboard’s album chart that year – while that’s it’s highest chart position to date, it re-entered the chart as recently as 2019, peaking at #12. Artists are often asked how they feel about singing songs year after year that have been out for so long. When Darlene Love sings live, you expect to hear her sing Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – but she’s not tired of it. Possibly because she didn’t sing it live for the first 20 years it was out. As told in the Oscar-winning documentary, 20 Feet From Stardom, Darlene was a background singer back in the day and never had the chance to perform the song live. It wasn’t until the 80’s that she’d perform the song regularly. On his last show before Christmas, from 1986 – 2014, David Letterman would bring Darlene Love on his show to sing the song. During her final Letterman appearance, she finished the song standing on Paul Schaefer’s piano and did not come down when Dave came over to thank her. She reportedly stayed on top of the piano because she didn’t want to cry if Dave hugged her after that final performance. Darlene still sings the song live on TV every year – since Letterman wrapped up his nightly show, she now performs it annually on The View. Darlene was involved in the recording of another version of the song for the 1987 charity album A Very Special Christmas. U2 did a faithful cover of the original and asked Darlene to sing the backing vocal. Darlene Love, now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is the only singer to ever back up U2 and Elvis Presley. Let’s get into the story behind Santa Baby! Santa Baby was first recorded by Eartha Kitt and released in 1953. It was written for a musical comedy film called New Faces. In August of that year, lyricist Joan Javits and composer Phil Springer went for a meeting at New York’s famous Brill Building and were asked if they could write a Christmas song for Kitt to be included in the movie. Javits suggested “Santa Baby” for a title and then Springer went to work on the melody. The song’s arrival was announced in an ad in Billboard magazine proclaiming it “1953’s Big Christmas Record.” But it faced a lot of controversy. On November 14, 1953, Eartha Kitt performed the song for King Paul & Princess Frederica of Greece while they were attending a banquet in NYC. Politicians in attendance thought the lyrics of the song were inappropriate for the Royals and made their feelings known to reporters covering the event. The Royals weren’t bothered a bit, but the word was out that this sexy Christmas song was out of line…and Santa Baby was banned in some southern US states. In a classic case of controversy creating even more attention, Santa Baby became the best-selling Christmas song of 1953. A year later, the publishers wanted a sequel. Have you ever heard This Year’s Santa Baby? It featured updated lyrics about the things on the wish list for Santa. And that wasn’t the only new version of the song. In the early 80’s, Springer & Javits had the chance to buy back the publishing rights. Javits reportedly wasn’t interested in being a rights holder, so she sold her share to Springer who then became the sole rights holder for Santa Baby. The first thing he did was to pull back on all the updates and focus on the 1953 original as the definitive version of the song and would only allow new recordings to use those original lyrics. Still…Santa Baby’s come back wasn’t immediate. Not until…1987. In the years following Madonna’s recording of the song for the charity album A Very Special Christmas, there was all kinds of interest that led to it being featured in everything from The Simpsons to The Sopranos…and new versions recorded by Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Michael Bublé. Bublé has been the one singer Springer has allowed to bend the rules and slightly alter the lyrics. For more stories Behind the Christmas Hits, Hit Subscribe! Episode 73: Selections from "A Very Special Christmas" (1987) - Eurythmics, Alison Moyet, Sting, Pretenders For the last episode of 2018, Brian and Sarah have chosen to talk about selections from the 1987 charity album "A Very Special Christmas." But before they get into that discussion, they have several other things to mention: congratulatory wishes to 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Cure and Roxy Music, a couple of five-star iTunes reviews, and a reminder about this year's holiday giveaway! It's a great way to start a Pet Shop Boys collection of your very own! Then, our hosts turn their attention to the first album in a series which has raised a great deal of money for the Special Olympics organization. They discuss the origins and making of the album, its release and chart history, and a couple of reviews from the time. Then Sarah and Brian take turns leading the discussion on four songs from the album, during which a small competition breaks out over whose song is the oldest. It's also revealed that not all of the songs are truly Christmas songs, and one of them is about a particularly gruesome topic! Sarah mentions both the cover artist and one of the song's lyricists have ties to Pennsylvania, and Brian explains the musical term "Picardy Third." Both hosts end the episode by once again thanking all their listeners for their support, feedback, and friendship throughout the year. Brian and Sarah are both looking forward to recording more episodes in 2019! Happy holiday season to you! Hope yours is shaping up well. I normally don't plug our wares in the blog too much BUT in case you feel like passing the Succotash for the holidays, now would be a good time to hop up to our Succotashery and get friends, loved ones, or just yourself some nifty Succotash t-shirts, mugs, and other assorted stuff. Commercial mode off. This epi brings us a special guest, Chris Bonno, in a special two-part interview but in a single show. See, I started the interview live, face-to-face, when Chris was up in San Francisco as the feature act for Hal Sparks, who I also interviewed. (Catch THAT chat back in Epi41!) But we only got about 8 minutes in when things got busy and we never got a chance to finish. Until a few days ago, when I caught up with Chris in LA via Skype and we picked up right where we left off. Chris is a comedian, an improvisor, a musician, an artist and a podcaster. A VIDEO podcaster, no less, and we will talk about his Electric Bonnoland show during the course of the interview. He's also a guy I've known for about a decade and a half, one of those "comic's comics" who everyone in the comedy scene in LA and Austin, where he got started, knows well but the public is still waiting for him to become an "overnight success". CLIPS How Did This Get Made?A consistently awesome bad movie podcast — that is, a podcast about bad movies — HDTGM? is hosted by Paul Scheer along with Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Raphael. They have always done feature films on the show but in their Episode 51 they tackle their first TV movie, Liz And Dick, the recent abomination starring the abomination known as Lindsay Lohan. (I give these guys the full review treatment on in This Week In Comedy Podcasts on Splitsider.com, so check that out, too!) Inverse DeliriumThis podcast hails from Baltimore (or Smalltimore, as host Geoffrey Welchman proclaims it.) Geoffrey’s put a lot of effort into his sound quality and he’s got a great pro announcery voice, which you don't find a lot of in podcasting. In this clip, Geoffrey got guest comic-impressionist Kevin Pollak to star in a sketch he wrote. Larcher And LorensenChicago boys Al Larcher and Clark Lorensen host a sports-and-comedy-based podcast called, rightly enough, Larcher And Lorensen. They’re also part of a comedy troupe in Chi-town called Comedy Accident and, in the clip they sent us, they were visited by a couple of guys from the group. RagtimeThis is a comedy podcast in the vein of movie reviews as well as news about films. It stars Schwood and Suds. (I know that Schwood is actually Chris Sherwood but I have no intel on the identity of Suds. Doesn’t matter…) In a clip from their epi 15 — just in time for the holidays — it’s their Gift Guide for Celebrities! Oddcast PodcastSuccotash gets a lot of love and support from Adam Barker, the brains behind the Oddcast Podcast in the UK (which is also part of Adam's Pod Gods Network.) Adam and his crew did a Very Special Christmas episode which a clip from can only partially do justice to — it’s basically their version of a Christmas Carol, where Adam is taken to visit the past, present, and future of his own podcast. Burst O' DurstVeering a little off of politics (although they're in here, too), our Ambassador to the Middle, Will Durst, reveals his Top 10 Comedic New Stories of 2012. Enjoy! EXTRA TREATS In addition to the basket o' clips we have this epi, there are a few other treats… Friend-of-Succotash and past guest John Anealio provides us with a new holiday tune: Batman Smells (A Rebuttal) off of his new seasonal EP Seasons Geekings — and he's making the download of that 4-song EP FREE if you hop over to his website, http://JohnAnealio.com! We've also got a holiday greeting from the Bonn And Obo (Bonnandobo) Show, a show that we have yet to play an actual clip from but we will as soon as they say they're ready. I've been enjoying a video series on YouTube by Joe Plummer's Gotta Kid To Feed Productions, Real Actors Read Yelp Reviews. It's not a podcast but it's such a clever and funny idea I wanted to share it with you Succotashians. In installment #11, actor Darren Goldstein (Damages, Limitless) reads a 5-star Yelp review for a place called Schnitzel Queen. Click over to watch the performance, it's even tastier. That's pretty much everything we've got in store for you in Epi43. Have a good time, don't let the holidays make you too nuts, and please remember to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
