As a huge thank you to the people who have very generously donated some of their hard earned scratch to us over on our Ko-Fi account, we came up with the idea of letting people give us non-Queen songs to talk about and vote on. This week's song was requested by the wonderful Al Dudeney. If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Gelatinous Instruments" or "We need more dulcimer players in the union". The second episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers the final single from "Double Fantasy", the last album released in John Lennon's lifetime, "Watching the Wheels".If you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! David Sheff conducted the last major interview with John Lennon. Just as Double Fantasy was being released, Sheff interviewed John & Yoko for Playboy magazine. It was the famous interview where Lennon went through the Beatles catalogue song-by-song - just before he died. The backstory of that interview is fascinating. Hosted on Acast. In this episode, we dive into themes of voyeurism, power dynamics, "cult" classic Hollywood (Kubrick talk makes an appearance), and unfortunately, fat tongues. If you're enjoying the show, you are voyeuristic maenads... like us. Sam Levinson knows us and he knows we're all joining Tedros' club (cult). Filmmaker Jon Lefkovitz has just released his 2014 SXSW film "Rubber Soul" on YouTube. Jon and I review. Quoting his description: "In December 1970, John Lennon and Yoko Ono were interviewed for "Rolling Stone" prior to the release of their "Plastic Ono Band" albums. Ten years later, in September 1980, the couple granted their first in-depth interview in five years to "Playboy" while they were in the process of recording "Double Fantasy". RUBBER SOUL reconstructs portions of these two historical interviews based on available transcripts and audio, juxtaposing them in order to explore the dynamic nature of identity over time."

Linktree: https://linktr.ee/Analytic The Weeknd and Future team up on their latest single “Double Fantasy,” which was released Friday (April 21). The Weeknd has been teasing “Double Fantasy,” which will be featured on the soundtrack for his upcoming HBO series The Idol, on Instagram over the last week. Last Friday, he performed it for the first time during Metro Boomin‘s Coachella set. “Temperature rising, bodies united, now that I tried you in my arms. No need to fight it, no need to hide it, now that I've seen what's in your heart,” The Weeknd sang during the festival. Even though Future didn't join him on stage for the song's live debut, the two performed “Low Life” from Future's 2016 album EVOL. In her career as a writer and reporter, Laurie Kaye had the opportunity to speak with some of the biggest names in music. And her biggest interview was on December 8th, 1980. That's when she sat down and talked with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Only a few short hours after their interview, John was shot and killed outside his apartment, making Laurie's interview his last. The joy of their time together and the guilt and sadness over his death have stayed with Laurie ever since that terrible day in New York. Her memoir, Confessions of a Rock n Roll Name Dropper is available for pre-order from Fayetteville Mafia Press and will be available next December.
As winter thaws to spring in 1984, a fresh batch of singles plucked from John Lennon's posthumous Milk & Honey LP are released on Polydor Records. Stepping Out and Borrowed Time saw some diminishing returns from the previous singles and LP release, but no one could deny the cold comfort of new John Lennon music back on the charts. Producer Jack Douglas found himself victorious in the court case against Yoko Ono over payments and royalties associated with the sessions which produced those tracks - and with that ruling, the final chapter in the Double Fantasy saga drew to a close. McCartney, meanwhile, was in the process of fulfilling a childhood dream - the development of a new Rupert the Bear animated short which would feature new music and soundtrack (not to mention voice acting!) from Paul himself. Rupert and the Frog Song is now scheduled to debut in theaters, ahead of the new McCartney film on the way... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
As the press tour for the Pipes of Peace LP wound down, Paul McCartney's So Bad music video featuring Ringo Starr heralded the arrival of the forthcoming Macca movie Give My Regards To Broadstreet. But as if from a bolt from above, the other half of the Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership was about to have one final collection of unheard new material ready to compete with his bandmate. On January 19th, Polydor Records release Milk & Honey - a posthumous LP from John Lennon assembled and curated by co-headliner Yoko Ono. This release gathered together and finished off the remaining new tracks from John's 1980 Double Fantasy sessions to act as a mirror for the aforementioned ALP and give the world the gift of new John Lennon solo material one last time. Somehow, impossibly, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were once again on the same music charts, competing for commercial superiority nearly 4 years after the brutal murder of John... Hosted on Acast. John meant the world, to most people, and definitely to all of us. His music, his message, and his fun way of spreading it, attracted so many to him. One wicked soul saw things differently than most. He took John's life on 12/8/80...Forgiveness is a virtue, but forgive us for being less than virtuous in our disdain for this man, may he rot for eternity when his life ends. For us, the living, we have found ways to move forward for decades now. This episode can help those who still mourn...Markus and Ray had two very different evenings on December 8th, 1980. Luther Russell and I roll into the next hour of discussion and analysis of the intent behind Double Fantasy; about Yoko's standing in the rock world, and how The Beatles might better have dealt with her entry into their world. The album is ripe for a fresh listen, and no matter how you may rank it in the canon, is certainly worthy of an extended discussion as a release so heavy with meaning. Enrollment open now for Why The Beatles? - an online 3-session course beginning in October: https://ce.harpercollege.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=9470614&selectedProgramAreaId=27039&selectedProgramStreamId=508576 This podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. Given the unique circumstance of Double Fantasy - John Lennon's first work in five years and his slaying within a few short weeks of its release - it is hard to assess the final work issued during his lifetime; a joint effort with his wife, Yoko Ono. Its initial tepid reception gave way to it serving as a place for mourners worldwide to project their grief, and has, for some, grown to status as perhaps his finest work. For others, it pointed to evidence of his irrelevancy in a world that had changed during his time away; for still others, it was a showcase for Yoko being in far more tune with the times than the former Beatle. Singer-songwriter/performer Luther Russell (solo artist, Those Pretty Wrongs) returns to the show to make the case for the album representing peak Lennon-Ono collaboration - the culmination of their years together. He argues that it is ripe for reassessment, just as Ram was. See what you think during the first hour of our discussion.
