A lot going on in La Crosse this weekend on both ends of the spectrum, as Jean Taylor and Josh Hertel both join to talk about two big events. First (7:15), Taylor breaks down this new two-day party called Big River Rally on Friday and Saturday at the downtown Oktoberfest grounds and beyond. Then Hertel joins (18:50) to talk about Coulee Con, this gaming extravaganza, happening Friday-Sunday at the La Crosse Center. Began the show, though, with a bit of a recap from the August primary, with the two Republican-written constitutional amendments being voted down, Tara Johnson and Rebecca Cooke winning Democratic primaries for state Assembly and US House. Big River Rally features a pair of concerts — Buckcherry on Friday and Jackyl on Saturday — stunt shows, a bike show, vendors, a veterans breakfast and a pair of rides through the Coulee Region, including one featuring WKTY's Bill Michaels and Jackyl's Jesse James Dupree. For more info and tickets, click here. And, at the La Crosse Center, the 10th annual and possibly last Coulee Con — a tabletop gaming convention that's put on by Hertel, who is also the president of Coulee Gaming Inc. Get tickets for Coulee Con by clicking here. One of the cool aspects that we discussed was how Hertel gets sent never-before-played games, sets up tournaments with them and the winner takes home the game, which may be one of a kind or the next big thing. Hertel says this will be the last Coulee Con — for now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Imagine an alien world where a creature could create a sonic boom simply by whipping its tail. Look no further as such creatures once roamed the Earth. This is just one remarkable discovery made by the world renowned Paleontologist Philip J. Currie -- the man whose worked inspire Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park. In this episode, I speak with Philip J. Currie about feathered dinosaurs, long necked giants, his fascinating career and ongoing work. More info: Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum Philip J. Currie Bio: Philip J. Currie, born in Brampton, Ontario on March 13th, 1949, is a leading Canadian palaeontologist and museum curator who helped found the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. He is now a professor at the University of Alberta. Inspired as a child by a toy dinosaur in a cereal box, Currie went on to study zoology at the University of Toronto, and then vertebrate palaeontology at McGill, under the tutelage of Robert Carroll, himself a major figure in the study of extinct animals. After receiving his doctorate, Currie became the curator of earth sciences at the Provincial Museum of Alberta in Edmonton in 1976. In 1981, this department became the nucleus of the new Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology (now the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology), in Drumheller, Alberta, where Currie is curator of dinosaurs. Currie is an important figure in dinosaur science, and has specialized in fossils from Alberta's Dinosaur Provincial Park as well as other Cretaceous sites (dating from the latter part of the dinosaur age) around the world. He is particularly interested in the evolution and classification of carnivorous dinosaurs (theropods) and their living descendants, birds. He has painstakingly investigated the skeletal anatomy of many of these, including the recently discovered feathered theropods (Protarchaeopteryx and Caudipteryx) of China. The find was considered clear evidence of the relationship between birds and dinosaurs. Other research has focused on dinosaur footprints, as well as dinosaur growth and variation, including description of embryonic duck-billed dinosaur bones discovered inside their fossilized crushed eggshells at Devil's Coulee in southern Alberta. On this episode of Tent Show Radio, experience a high voltage hour of countrified rock & roll as Wisconsin bred band Them Coulee Boys play tunes from their album Namesake. Them Coulee Boys craft a brand of Americana that blends folk, punk, bluegrass, and rock & roll. They sing their conversational songs in 4-part harmony, often with a banjo stomp and rhythm section punch that drives the audience onto the dance floor and into community. Their trusty van has propelled them thousands of miles across the country and into the hearts of strangers, who tend to leave each show as family. Soren Staff and Beau Janke, who both grew up amidst a stretch of glacial melt-carved river valleys in the upper Midwest, and more often than not could be found with an instrument in hand, became fast friends and formed their electric music partnership, after having met as counselors at a bible camp in northern Wisconsin in 2011. The duo played their first gigs as the rough-around-the-edges folk/rock/Americana outfit Them Coulee Boys in 2013. The additions of Jens Staff on mandolin, Neil Kraus on guitar & bass, and Stas Hable on drums helped to grow the band into the rollicking outfit it is today. With three full-length albums and an EP behind them, including 2019's Die Happy, they released their fourth studio album Namesake in 2021. The new album feels familial, like old friends with no need for small talk. There are moments of power and punch, balanced with an intimacy only felt between the ones we love. The ten-song collection spans from pure and genuine ballads to a leaping, countrified take on rock and roll. Namesake finds Them Coulee Boys following a new trajectory, combining their signature take on folk-grass and Americana with comfort on electric instruments and playing rock and roll. The record lives and breathes. It's both intimate and bombastic. We're excited to present this special episode discussing the state of drag in Chicago and the country. Drag is important for its role in artistic expression, challenging gender norms, fostering inclusivity, serving as a platform for activism, providing safe spaces, offering entertainment and contributing to the cultural and historical fabric of society. It continues to be a dynamic and evolving form of expression with a far -reaching impact. We were honored to bring together three of Chicago's top drag performers, drag queens Khloe Coulee and Chamilla Foxx and drag King Tenderoni to get their input and insights on drag in Chicago, the challenges that drag performers are currently facing, and some advice for up -and -coming drag performers and those looking to find more drag to enjoy throughout the city. If you pick up one of our neighborhood guides at our local businesses, you can find more information about these performers as well as a list of businesses that you can see drag performance in the neighborhood. We'd like to thank Khloe, Camilla, and Tenderoni for coming to speak with us, and we hope that this episode provides you some more gateways to experience drag in your local community. It's not often that I have local guests on the podcast, but today I'm so excited to welcome my friend Anna Ledebuhr, the owner and founder of one of my personal favorite boutiques, Coulee Boutique in Galesville, Wisconsin. Five years ago, Anna took a big leap, leaving teaching for entrepreneurship, and since she's built her business from a Shopify site and pop-ups to a 3,500-square-foot brick-and-mortar. Anna has done an amazing job not only with her merchandising and marketing but also with building community and teaming up with other local small business owners. 80 years ago Washington state was forever changed by the Grand Coulee Dam. The Dam still provides tons of hydropower today, and created a reservoir for farmers to divert and use as the breadbasket of the state today. When it was finally completed in January of 1943, US Government officials enlisted folk music legend Woody Guthrie to write a series of 26 songs about the dam. It's a quirky moment in US and music's history – but it produced instant classics that many will recognize, like “Roll on Columbia.”

This week we remember the Birch Coulee historic site. This location was the site of one of the deadliest battles of the US-Dakota War, over 150 years ago. To commemorate this tragedy, we suggest that you read a book about a tragedy. Though it's less than a mile long, Makoshika State Park's Kinney Coulee Trail provides a rugged taste of the badlands that make this part of eastern Montana famous. A series of short switchbacks drops you down into the heart of the coulee, where you'll wind past wind-sculpted hoodoos and other rock formations. The trail can be rough and hard to follow at times, but the stunning geology makes hiking along the coulee bottom feel like completing a natural obstacle course, and a shaded picnic table halfway through is a lovely spot to catch your breath. Now our feature story… ICU nurse Todd Avis helped care for the first COVID-19 patient in Wenatchee last spring. And on Thursday he became one of the very first health care workers in the area to be vaccinated. Armed with a shipment of the Pfizer mRNA vaccine that had been delivered on Tuesday, Confluence Health vaccinated more than 150 frontline health care workers on Thursday. Among them were ICU nurses, physical therapists and support staff who clean the rooms of coronavirus-positive patients. In addition to its own staff, Confluence Health is offering vaccination appointments to other frontline workers. More than 500 people signed up for the first three days of appointments. Over the coming months that pool of 500 will expand to tens of thousands. Health officials will be pushing to build herd immunity and bring an end to the pandemic as soon as possible. Confluence pharmacists made a welcome discovery on the first day of vaccinations: each vial had enough vaccine for an extra dose. With 195 vials in this first Pfizer shipment, that raised its supply from 975 doses to around 1,170. Governor Jay Inslee spoke at a press release last week announcing the vaccine's arrival in Washintgon. For nurses like Avis, who's been with Confluence Health since 2014, the vaccine couldn't come soon enough. He said that at this stage he thinks healthcare workers are just at the point of 'let's get through this. There's a light at the end of the tunnel with the vaccination. Health care workers have been in short supply across the country and here in North Central Washington. One of those frontline staff members is Dave Hesse, a physical therapist who's spent the past three months treating ICU patients. Hesse was officially the first person in Wenatchee to receive the vaccine on Thursday morning. Hesse's days are often spent helping patients battling severe cases of COVID-19 regain their strength. It's medical personnel like Avis and Hesse, who interact with COVID-19 patients day in and day out, who are being prioritized for vaccination while doses are still in very limited supply. Upon the arrival of the vaccine Dr. Peter Rutherford, Confluence Health CEO said that though the PPE is great, the vaccine is one more layer of hopefully longer-term protection. He also said he's incredibly grateful to all the staff here who have been dealing with this for 10 months and all of the emotional distress that it has caused. People keep coming and trying and doing their best. In many ways, health care workers will be the easiest group to vaccinate — Confluence Health staff have so far been eager to take it. As supplies increase, focus will turn to other at-risk groups including essential workers and adults with preexisting conditions. At that point, public education about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine will be key. Rutherford also stressed that until the general public has been vaccinated, we've got to stay diligent about the other efforts to not transmit the disease. Even though he had the vaccine during the trail, he will continue to wear a mask and stay socially distanced. State health officer Dr. Kathy Lofy gave a similar message. Next, we'd like to take a moment to recognize a decade of masterful gardening. The late Homer McNeill had a vision - it grew from a seedling of an idea into a fully blossoming garden. It's thanks to Homer that we have a beautiful community education garden in Wenatchee. The Master gardeners have also played an important role. The master gardeners are a group of community minded volunteers. They do more than tend to the garden. Each year there are improvements or even additions along with many educational events. For example, in 2013 they built the butterfly garden among other projects. But this year things have changed. The pandemic put a stop to the community education garden's outreach functions. Finally, some local history, Wenatchee Valley History is brought to you by NABUR – your trusted neighborhood community. NABUR is a free online forum you can trust to connect with your community, focus on facts & make a difference. Join the conversation! Visit wenatcheeworld.com/nabur A three and a half mile-long precipice in Coulee is known as Dry Falls. Dry Falls is thought to be the largest waterfall that ever existed. If you don't know Them Coulee Boys yet, you will soon. The Eau-Claire-based bluegrass outfit just released its outstanding sophomore album, Die Happy, two weeks ago, and they're about to embark on a lengthy U.S. tour. Just days after the up-and-coming band put out its long-awaited record and just before officially hitting the road, Them Coulee Boys dropped by Turner Hall to play a one-off show in support of its new album. Before that concert, singer-guitarist Soren Staff was kind enough to talk about Die Happy and the unlikely turn of events that led to him trying to make a career in music with Them Coulee Boys. Staff met My First Band host Tyler Maas in the Turner Hall balcony before the Aug. 30 outing to talk about the process of making the "all killer, no filler" (both Maas' and Sum 41's words) record with one of his musical idols and his band's plans for the near future. He also told Maas about his start as the singer of a Fall-Out-Boy-adjacent band in a rural Wisconsin town with a population of 400 and exactly no music scene before he moved to Milwaukee to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering. Along the way, he picked up an acoustic guitar, fell in love with folk, and the rest was history. This episode also features a cameo from past guest Joseph Huber, who started his soundcheck during the interview, and some ice bucket interference in the Turner Hall green room. Interruptions aside, this was an interesting and fun one! My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Them Coulee Boys ("Die Happy").
If you haven't heard of Them Coulee Boys, you will. This Wisconsin band named after unusual geography (and technically, incorrect grammar) blends bluegrass, rock and punk into a style of Americana that's expanding to new audiences with a new album and tour. Lead singer Soren Staff talks with Eric Paulsen about what's ahead and what they've seen in the changing music business since they formed - at camp, of all places - in 2013.

Today's episode is a top-20 bonanza! I had tour guide extraordinaire April Pett in the studio to take me on a virtual walk through Paris. She gives her favourite street in each of the 20 Paris arrondissements. I like her list because it's not just streets, there are bridges, alleyways, elevated walkways and more, and she recommends them for different reasons. One street has the city's only baguette vending machine, for instance. Book a tour to see the streets of Paris with April here, at April in Paris tours, and be sure to drop my name. Now, before we get to the list, I've started taking my video camera and walking down these streets as a true Parisian flaneur. If you're a Patreon member in the brand new "Flaneur Club", I'll invite you to a closed Facebook page where I will take you down all 20 streets over the course of the coming months (and a lot more). I did the first one today in the 7th arrondissement by the Eiffel Tower. Thanks to those who joined live! Sign up today, your crowdfunding helps me make the show better! Anyway, enjoy the episode, here's the list of streets so you can mark them down for yourselves. Pictures to follow shortly on The Earful Tower. 1. Pont Neuf Sure, it’s a bridge, but it’s also a street and it’s a great one. You can see the Eiffel Tower in the distance and you can peer over into the beautiful little Square du Vert-Galant park. 2. Rue des Petit Champs This street is the access way to all the hidden passages of the 2nd arrondissement, some aren’t very visibly marked so just walk along this street . These passages are a glimpse into yesteryear, says April. 3. Rue de Franc Bourgeois In the heart of the Marais, you’ll find people flocking here, but don’t worry. It’s one of the best shopping streets in the city. On Sundays, in front of the Carnavalet museum, there’s a cute little jazz band of elderly musicians. It’s like an open-air concert, says April Pett. There’s Place des Vosges at one end too! 4. Rue des Barres Great for an afternoon glass of Rosé on a sunny day - and there are very colourful facades too! 5. Rue Mouffetard A lively, beautiful market street. April calls it a sensation for all of the sense. Plenty of cobblestones. Cheese, pastry, crepe, wine… it’s a foodie haven on any given day. There’s a great tart restaurant - La Maison des tarts. Get a tart to go for 2.50. 6. Cour du commerce Saint-Andre A combination of a small medieval cobblestones streets - don’t wear your high heels on this street! The Cafe Procope (see below) has been whipping out java since 1686. 7. Rue de Monttessuy Perhaps the best street for a view of the Iron Lady - get there in the evening if you want to see her sparkle, says April. 8. Avenue Montaigne It's full of luxury shops. If you’re lucky enough to see it at Christmas, you’ll understand why Paris deserves the moniker of City of Light. 9. Rue des Faubourg Montmartre Access to more hidden passages and the home to the oldest chocolate shop, A la Mere de la family, a chocolate shop from 1761. Bouillon Chartier, a legendary institution, 1896 and the prices are from 1896 too. It’s a big dining hall. You’ll feel like you’re at the halls of Oktoberfest. 10. Quai des Jemappes When the sun is shining, everyone goes down to the canal and has a glass of Rosé. 11. Passage Turquetil A beautiful little place with framed art along the sides of the buildings, not to mention the old shoes they’ve made into plant pots. 12. Coulee vert The elevated walkway, a great view of the 12th arrondissement. Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. 13. Avenue des Choisy Restaurants, shops, and a great look into the Asian community of Paris. And it’s where you’ll find Pho 14 too, see below. 14. Square Montsouris It feels like an extension of the nearby Parc Montsouris, it’s townhouses, and it’s very green, says April. It’s a pocket of village inside bustling Paris. 15. Rue Paul-Barruel The only street in town with a baguette vending machine. The bread is partially cooked before it’s put in the machine. You put in a euro and it gets you a warm, freshly cooked baguette. 16. Rue de Passy Great place for boutique shopping, including the covered market of Passy. Check out the oyster and wine bar in the market, says April. 17. Rue des Dames Just north of Place de Clichy. It’s a nice place for an evening out, try the Cave Populaire wine bar - 7 euros for a bottle of wine. And 8 euros for a charcuterie board. And it’s not touristy at all compared to the nearby Montmartre. 18. Rue des Montcenis On the backside of Montmartre, these are the legendary stairs leading up to the Sacré-Coeur. You'll never feel more Parisian than when you're scaling these stairs. 19. Rue de la Villette A small street north of Parc de Belleville and leading to Buttes Chaumont, check out the restaurant there called Escargot (if you like things like snail, frogs’ legs, and kangaroos), says April. 20. Rue Denoyez This place is an open canvas for street artists to lay out their masterpieces, says April. Check out the bar Aux Folies at one end, where it feels like Happy Hour every hour (and where Edith Piaf began her career as a cabaret singer). That's it! All 20. Now, all these excellent tips have been added to my ever-growing Ultimate Guide to Paris (170 tips now!). The guide is hidden for Patreon members who are in the Friends of the Show club. Lastly, if you can't justify becoming a Patron of the show but want to show your support, please leave a review on iTunes and I may just read it out on air! And don't forget if you want a friend in Paris, book a tour with April in Paris Tours.

2 guys, 2 days, 2 countries, 2 states, 2 provinces, 2 eclectic stores, and 2 dry lake beds, Darren and Graham drive down to the Spokane and the Dry Falls at Grand Coulee. This is one of the main areas of research recently for Randal Carlson and Graham Hancock in their catastrophist work. We chat a little bit on the way down in the car and then we meet Brad Young and his friend Shawn at the Dry Falls for a hike. Some amazing scenery and to imagine there was miles of ice and water there only 11,500 years ago. Brad has worked with Randal Carlson for years helping him develop the latest theories and they have travelled all over the scablands. We travel with Brad to another lake and we have a little chat in the car and we meet Jestin in person for the first time for Breakfast. Justin has been helping us with our news letter and he blogs for Grimerica as well. Check out our Instagram for a couple pics…. Results of three documents issued by the City of Lethbridge indicate that the river valley, albeit a beautiful force of nature, greatly reduces the ability for people to cross it other than by vehicle. The solution, already mentioned in two of the documents is to build a crossing that would span the coulees and eliminate the steep grades required to transit the valley. The Coulee Corridor Committee has already made a presentation to City Council to further explore this possibility. They have also discussed the project with several bridge designers, project managers, and the Deputy Secretary of Transportation for the US, who has a strong focus on Livable Communities and the role of Pedestrian Bridges. Possible site locations have been identified along with concepts to incorporate transit into a plan that outlines the many benefits Lethbridge citizens could enjoy. This exciting venture to build such an iconic structure that ultimately would be the highest and longest pedestrian bridge in Canada ought to stir a lot of discussion. The question is not can it be done……but rather, will it be done? Will the citizens of Lethbridge absorb the vision and embrace the concept? Speaker: Ron Bain Ron Bain is the former owner of Runner's Soul and has been a longtime proponent of healthy living and lifestyles. Over the years he has been an advocate for a pedestrian bridge that would eliminate the need to navigate the steep grades and one that would be accessible to all citizens regardless of age or physical ability. Ron is a past president of the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce. A passionate organizer and supporter of numerous running events in Lethbridge, among them the annual Moonlight Run, Ron earned Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame inductee status in 2007.

Coulee Thirst: Plants and Water in the Oldman River Valley The woodlands and shrub thickets of our river valleys and coulees are valued by many southern Albertans for their beauty and the shade and shelter they provide for wildlife. What is it that allows trees and shrubs to grow and thrive in the semi-arid prairies of southern Alberta? Will these habitats be sustained for future generations to enjoy? Dr. Matthew Letts, a climatologist and ecologist who has studied cloud forests, peatlands and now the coulees of Lethbridge, will describe the unique physiological adaptations of trees and shrubs to our semi-arid climate. He will offer his thoughts on the impact of climate change and urban development on the local vegetation and coulees. Speaker: Matthew Letts Dr. Matthew Letts is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Lethbridge. His research focuses on how plants respond to environmental stress. He has research stations in the coulees of Lethbridge, the eastern slopes of Waterton Lakes National Park (Alberta) and in the cloud forests and paramo of Colombia. Matthew received a Ph.D. from the University of London, U.K., and worked as a lecturer at Trent University in Ontario before coming to Lethbridge in 2003.
