A Long Way Home depicts a moment when Saroo is not sure he finds that remembering his early childhood is painful, yet he can't help but continue to remember it because it is all he has. We turn to the scriptures to find God's people being called both to remembrance and to embracing new life in Christ. How do we keep these in balance? You can be a hero at any age, at least that is what Saroo Brierley, whose real name is Sheru Munshi Khan, teaches us through his story. Born into a very poor family in Khandwa, India, to a father who forced his mother to work in public works and his children to beg in railway stations, and then abandoned the family. One night in 1986, in order to feed their mother and siblings, Saroo and his brother Guddu, after a day of begging at their city's train station, hop on a train, and then transfer to a second train towards another destination. Saroo falls asleep...
2017, the year when Beyoncé announced she was having twins, Harry Styles released his debut single as a solo artist, and the other Harry (Prince Harry) announced his engagement to Meghan Markle. Meanwhile, Nathan, Nat & Shaun were keeping busy chatting with Saroo and Sure, Danny Green popped past before his big fight, and funny man Luke McGregor came in ahead of his Fringe show..See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We start with a complete lack of intro this week but don't worry it won't be too long before we settle into our usual bland patter as we discuss the Top 5 Hitchhikers. Expect a few stories from seasoned traveller Dan, having somehow once found himself in the Belgian Congo after draft dodging, or perhaps some other stuff that he did actually say. LION (2016) is a biography of Indian-Australian entrepreneur Saroo Brierley which tells the amazing journey of his reunification with his family, 25 years after having become separated from them in a train station in rural India. Accidentally journeying 1600km to Kolkata (Calcutta) where his native Hindi makes him incomprehensible to the Bengali speaking locals, newcomer Sunny Pawar gives an astonishing performance in the harrowing first 40 minutes as five-year old Sheru, who finds himself homeless and almost the victim of sex crimes before he is eventually adopted by an Australian couple. Dev Patel plays the adult Saroo searching improbably for his home, Rooney Mara does as much as she can with the thankless task of obligatory composite girlfriend but it's Nicole Kidman and David Wenham's benevolent parents Sue and John who warm your soul in the movies second half, made all the more affecting by Kidman's personal situation as mother to adopted children, before a simultaneously uplifting and heart-breaking ending draws this emotional gut-wringer to a close. A complete lack of any real lion content and an extended cameo from Google Earth forces me to take a star off. It's summer vacation and PHINEAS AND FERB find themselves challenged to a thumb wrestling competition by local bully Buford after an accidental public humiliation with an ice-cream. Meanwhile, probable Nazi Dr Doofenshmirtz is attempting to mind-rape people into attending his birthday party and only the brother's pet platypus Perry can stop him. With Phineas undergoing a rigorous training regime masterminded by former world heavyweight champion boxer Evander Holyfield, and thousands of tickets sold to the forthcoming bout, sister Candace has the chance she needs to finally obtain undisputable proof of the boys' shenanigans. Sharp writing and consistent wittiness mean this Disney offering was a firm favourite in one Dads house. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. This week, Jeanette and special guest, Oscar Martinez, talk about the 2014 Australian Biographical Drama, Lion. Based on the true story of Saroo Brierley, the film follows an Indian boy who becomes lost after falling asleep on a train, only to be adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty years late, Saroo uses Google Maps to track down his mother and siblings. This episode continues our focus on Cinematographer Greig Fraser's style and technique. Special thanks to Oscar Martinez for taking part in this amazing episode.
Lion tells the true story of Saroo Brierly, who gets lost in India at the age of five with no way of finding his family. After surviving on the streets for some months, a kind stranger helps him Saroo get into an orphanage and, eventually, adopted by a lovely Australian couple. As an adult, Saroo's childhood trauma pushes him to search for his birth family. It's a moving and inspiring film that helps Chuck and Don talk through such lessons as the tenacity it takes to survive, how loving someone isn't always enough to save them, how even the well-adjusted can find themselves in an unhealthy relationship with rabbit holes - and how hard it can be to find that tools to help you find your way out from the dark. To celebrate Mother's Day, here is an incredible true story about an Australian mother, her adopted child from India Saroo, and his life-long search for his birth mother. Saroo became an orphan aged five, after accidentally boarding a train to a different city. He barely remembered anything about his family, but managed to find them after a search using Google Earth. His story is depicted in the book A Long Way Home, which was later made into the movie Lion. His Mum, Sue Brierley, was played by Nicole Kidman and has since written her own book about the experience, "Lioness", and she's been speaking to Jack Tame. LISTEN ABOVE
Sue Brierley was thrust into the spotlight when her adopted son Saroo’s journey to find his birth mother was made into the critically-acclaimed movie Lion.A few years after the movie came out, Saroo convinced Sue that the world needed to hear her story. Lioness is a down-to-earth and deeply personal account of domestic abuse, families and adoption. In this frank and candid conversation with Sandra, Sue shares her feelings about her own difficult upbringing, the reasons behind her determination to do things differently when it came to a family of her own, and the reality of adopting and raising two very different children. And what exactly is the ‘mother myth’? Sue Brierley adopted her son, Saroo, after he had been found wandering the streets of Kolkata as a five year old. He had got on a train that took him across India and away from his birth family, and couldn't find his way back. Sue always believed that Saroo's birth mother was alive, and would send comforting thoughts to her every night, sharing the boy's progress as he grew up in Tasmania. 25 years later Saroo used satellite maps online to retrace his steps to his first family's home in India, and Sue finally met the birth mother she had thought about for so long. Saroo's story was made into the Oscar-nominated film Lion, in which Sue's character is played by Nicole Kidman. We’re ending 2020 with one of the most inspirational stories ever told! This week we’re discussing the remarkable tale of Saroo Brierley. In 1986, as a 5yr old, Saroo accidentally boarded a train looking for his brother. After riding the train for days, he ended up lost in a sea of people in Kolkata. Rendered homeless for nearly a month, and eventually put into an orphanage....he was later adopted by a family from Tasmania. Using just a few vivid memories he had as a 5yr old, Saroo, used Google Earth to navigate his way back home 25yrs later. This is one you’re not going to want to miss. Sue Brierley chose a path that not many people choose. From a very young age she knew she wanted to adopt children, even though she could have her own. Sue is the mother who raised Saroo - the man who's story Lion became an international best seller and then became a movie. From the very beginning Sue wondered about Saroo's 'other' mother. Did she know he was still alive? So when Saroo went to search for his biological family, Sue became part of the journey as well. Sue's memoir Lioness talks about her own family history, of parents who fled from the horrors of WWII, attempts (and failures) to make a happy life in Australia, and Sue's own incredible decision to live life on her own terms. Sue talks about her childhood and an incredible vision she had when she was still a child.
Sue Brierley is the adoptive mother of Saroo, the Indian boy whose remarkable story of finding his Indian birth mother is told in the film “Lion”. Sue has now written her side of the story, and she talks to Paul Barclay about her book, "Lioness".

If you loves movies, then you would have no doubt seen or heard of the multi academy award nominated film, "LION" starring Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel. This is the story of Sue Brierley, mother of Saroon, the boy they call Lion. Sue, talks with Trace about her book "Lioness" and goes deep into her life, adoption, childhood, the love of her life and the global sucsess of Lion to her family
If you haven’t seen the 2016 Oscar-nominated film LION, please watch it before you listen to this episode. Based on the 2013 non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley, it’s one of the most powerful biographical drama films I’ve ever seen. It retells the story of Saroo, who was lost to his family in India at age 5 after ending up on a train bound more than 1,000 kilometers away from his hometown. After living on the street and then an orphanage, he is adopted by Tasmanian couple Sue and John Brierley. A year into his life with them, the couple adopt another boy, Mantosh, who due to the trauma he experienced in the Indian orphanages he was in, has a lot of trouble adjusting to his new home and this is one of the many heartbreaking parts of the film. 20 years later, using Google Earth Saroo remarkably finds his hometown. The film ends with Saroo's return to India in February 2012 and being reunited with his biological mother, and we learn that his brother Guddu was killed by a train the same night that they were separated as children. While we learnt a lot about Sue in the movie, who is played by Nicole Kidman, I was left wanting to know more about this extraordinary woman who knew from a young age that adoption would always be her path. There’s a moment in the film where Saroo learns that sue is not infertile, and that she chose adoption because it was what she wanted. It was her path. And Sue is our guest on the podcast today. She has just written the most powerful memoir Lioness, which is out now, and I hope you will all read. This is a beautiful story of family in all its forms, and the quest of one woman to better the lives of children in need. In today’s conversation, we talk about: Sue’s early life as the child of refugees from Hungary and Poland, living in an isolated environment and with poor language skills in Tasmania. Her violent father and traumatic childhood and how this trauma has played out in her life. Her journey to motherhood and her desire to help vulnerable children. The arrival of her first son Saroo and what it was like being a mother for the first time. Adopting another son from India, Mantosh, who had experienced significant trauma in India and how the challenges she faced sent her into a deep depression. What it was like when she travelled to India to meet Saroo’s birth mother. The film LION and how the experience was incredibly emotional for her family. The process of writing her memoir Lioness. In 1987, Sue and John Brierly adopted a little boy from India named Saroo. Years later, Saroo would go on to discover his birth family via Google Earth and his story would be made into a Hollywood film named Lion. But it’s the story behind that story that Holly and Andrew are focusing on today. Sue, Saroo’s mum, has written a book called Lionness, and it’s all about the years she waited for her sons to arrive, and why her family trauma helped her decide to adopt. On the latest episode of This Glorious Mess, Sue tells Holly and Andrew what happened before Lion, and before Nicole Kidman played her… CREDITS Hosts:Holly Wainwright & Andrew Daddo With thanks to: Sue Brierley, you can find her book Lioness at any good bookstore. When I watched the totally heartbreaking Oscar-nominated film 'Lion' starring Nicole Kidman four years ago, my daughter was four. As a mum with a child pretty much the same age, my heart shattered into a million pieces as I watched 5-year-old Saroo go missing. I just couldn't imagine how my child would survive, so tiny and all alone on the streets of India. I also couldn't imagine not seeing her again. But this story has a happy ending and an incredible woman behind it. Sue Brierley was living in Tasmania at the time and adopted Saroo a few months after he went missing. Sue has now written a book called 'Lioness' about her tragic upbringing and what it's like to have Nicole Kidman play you on film! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Cinematography Podcast Episode 85: Greig Fraser World-renowned director of photography Greig Fraser grew up in Australia, working as a still photographer before he moved into cinematography, shooting shorts, TV shows and films for several Australian directors. Greig's most recently completed project is The Mandalorian, which recently earned him an Emmy nomination. At first, Greig felt incredibly nervous about working on the frontline development for The Mandalorian because of the massive amount of technology involved. His usual approach as a DP has been naturalistic lighting, in a real setting, rather than an entirely manufactured environment on a soundstage. The Mandalorian brought together gaming technology and set design, which could only be done with the support of ILM and Lucasfilm. The Star Wars series used 3D digital environments built with Epic Games' Unreal Engine gaming technology that was capable of interacting with the cameras and was projected on huge LED screens for very realistic backgrounds on the soundstage. Greig was not a Star Wars newbie- prior to The Mandalorian, he was the cinematographer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As a fan of Star Wars, Greig felt some trepidation at first about shooting Rogue One, because he was worried about losing that passion in the day-to-day while on set. Greig met with Rogue One director Gareth Edwards and loved his early film Monsters, so he was convinced to take the job. Grieg also discusses his work on the 2016 film, Lion, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. Greig was extremely excited to shoot Lion- he and fellow Australian director Garth Davis had worked together a number of times. As a photographer, Greig had traveled and shot in India, and he loved being able to return to India and Melbourne to shoot such a great story. For Lion, Greig and Garth Davis wanted to be very respectful of Indian culture, and be careful of their choices not to oversensationalize images of poverty. Greig shot many of the railway scenes in the film at the level of a small child to capture the character Saroo's feelings of loss and helplessness. Grieg Fraser is the cinematographer of two hugely anticipated films coming soon: Dune with director Denis Villeneuve and The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves.

Welcome to Season 2 of the Fostering Voices Podcast! We had an amazing 5 weeks off (even though I foolishly thought we only needed 2 weeks off). We are back, totally refreshed and ready for a new season, new guests, new listeners, and new foster adoption topics! We are actually recording this episode in our car as we drive from California to Arizona. We went on a cruise with my work - Showit.co. It's the best company in the world to work for, and they provide the best websites for Photographers and Creatives. Check it out if you are in need of a website! On the cruise we met Don and Renee Worcester. They are marriage/life coaches and we were so blessed to meet them! And one day you guys will too, cause we are definitely going to have them on the podcast. They have so much great advice to give, and they also happen to be adoptive parents and have a crazy story to tell! If you want to find out more about them, you can check them out here. This week's episode discusses: The movie Lion (on Netflix!). This movie is incredible, and is based on the true story by Saroo Brierley, who as a young boy, got separated from his family when he fell asleep on a train. He was lost and eventually adopted by an amazing family in Australia. This movie will make you bawl your face off. Saroo also wrote a book: A Long Way Home, we haven't read it yet, but it is on our list of books to read. And one day maybe we can get Saroo on our podcast! Wouldn't that be amazing?? Saroo's story is strongly dependent on the magical technology of Google Earth. We didn't know when this came out while recording, and it was 2004. But in Saroo's life story, he used Google Earth for a few years before he made a major breakthrough in 2011. (We said 2012 in the podcast. But that's the year he traveled to meet his birth mom.) We talked about Ontario Place, the place where we lost Lily when she was 3 or 4. We are the best parents ever. Chris referenced Episode 7: Wow That's Cool. Citibank vs CitiBank-uh . It's a real thing. Here's the giant building Chris and Robert were trying to get to while in Seoul. This week's life hack: Living with less baggage Essentialism by Greg McKeown. This book is fantastic and really causes you to live with intentionality and purpose and less. Living with less emotional baggage - I had to apologize/make amends with a neighbor after her kid fell at my house. I am the Witch of our neighborhood. Living with less physical baggage - having less in your physical Wardrobe, and home, makes for quicker tidying up and less clutter. Marie Kondo's book: "The Magical Art of Tidying Up" has helped me tremendously with this! Good Word of the Day: "I will satisfy the weary, and all who are faint I will replenish." Jeremiah 31:25 Most of our listeners are on summer break, and we just wrapped ours up! But whether you have kids, or don't, whether they are back in school, or not - we hope you are able to find moments of rest and allow the Lord to refresh you! Thanks for tuning in! We are so glad to be back, and as always, we are so thankful for you, dear listener! Olivia’s BFF from Bachelor Ben Higgins’ season, Tiara Soleim, AKA the chicken enthusiast, is back and trying to prove that recording podcasts don’t make her nervous. They’re talking about their most recent hilarious friendship moments, awkward dating encounters, why they both love long-distance relationships, and they’re getting into Tiara’s ridiculous snobbery when it comes to this ONE thing about men!
reallifechurch.org – Lion is the real-life story of Saroo Brierley. His story began as a five-year-old Indian boy who gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. Throughout life many of us go through a season of trying to survive; looking for answers, seeking healing from sickness, disappointed with our job or struggling through a broken marriage. Just as Saroo became lost in life, he was always seeking to find his mother. And just like his mother, God is searching for us and He will never give up until we find Him.

Lion is a very good movie that not only tells a great story but also highlights the very important issue of child abduction in India that I was completely unaware of. This is a very good movie that's difficult to watch at times, especially for parents, when you see some of the trouble young Saroo goes through. We were hoping to learn more about Saroo's adopted brother and explore that character in greater depth, but generally this is a very good movie. * Tell us what you think on our website: http://wetalkaboutmovies.com/lion-episode-10 * Like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/wetalkaboutmovies * Follow us on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/wetalkaboutmovi

When two brothers decide to leave their 3 year old sister behind to fend for herself, young Saroo gets lost and adopted by wealthy Australian white people. As an adult he tries to find his family and still doesn't care about his sister when he does.
Dev Patel oozes charisma in his Oscar-nominated turn as Saroo, an Indian man living with adopted parents in Australia. Years earlier, he was separated from his parents, never seeing his mother and brother again. He one day decides he wants to find his home and reunite with his original family. They are probably pretty worried about him. 'Lion' is a good film, although Andrew is fonder of it than Phil is. The discussion ranges from how 'Weinstein Brothers' a film is this to the tactile cinematography (also Oscar-nominated) to the depiction of Saroo's decision to track down his family. The discussion ranges from how 'Weinstein Brothers' a film is this to the tactile cinematography (also Oscar-nominated) to the depiction of Saroo's decision to track down his family. In this week's Back to the Movies, we're taking on the double feature you'd absolutely never consider if it wasn't January in our head to head reviews of the 2017 Best Picture nominee Lion followed by our spoiler filled talk on M. Night Shyamalan's recent box office hit, Split. We start the show off by tackling the critically acclaimed Australian drama, Lion. The film stars Dev Patel as Saroo Breirley, a man who was seperated from his family in India as a boy and was eventually adopted by Australian parents. 25 years after being separated, Saroo sets out to find his hometown in hopes that he can reunite with his mother and brother. The film spends a great deal of time reflecting on Saroo's struggle to find synthesis between his heritage and more privileged upbringing in a well to do Australian family. With so much at stake, it's hard to believe the whole film revolves around a guy surfing through google maps. It's a nominated film, but the question remains--can the film deliver a compelling character piece? In the second half of today's show, we take a look at the number one movie at the U.S. box office, Split. Ever since his critical and box office flops The Happening and Avatar: The Last Airbender, Shyamalan has struggled to get out of career jail. After the warmer reception to last year's The Visit and the success of Split, it looks like he just might have the momentum he needs to return to acclaim. Does he pull it off? Our review is very spoiler heavy and we highly recommend seeing the movie before listening to the second half of today's show. On this special episode of The Last New Wave, I was able to sit down with Saroo and Sue Brierley, the people who have inspired the Garth Davis directed film Lion. In this interview we discuss how Saroo's inspirational story was transferred to the screen, as well as discussing the importance of adoption in Australia. This interview was recorded in the Outdoor section of Luna Leederville, so there is a bit of background noise, but hopefully that doesn't disrupt from what is an interesting interview. Many thanks to the folks at Luna for allowing us to utilise their space to record. Director Garth Davis discusses his new film, Lion, with James Ponsoldt. Based on the nonfiction book A Long Way Home, Lion tells the incredible story of Saroo Brierly, a five-year-old boy who gets lost on a train hundreds of miles away from his family. After surviving on the streets of Calcutta, he is eventually adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, Saroo uses Google Earth to reunite with his family in India. Mr. Davis was nominated for the DGA Awards for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for Feature Film, as well as, Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for directing this film.
Composers Dustin O'Halloran and Hauschka discuss the unique challenges of crafting the emotional score for LION in eight weeks and collaborating from their studios in Los Angeles and Germany. We also explore the approach and inspiration behind four of the tracks from this incredible film. LION tells the story of Saroo Brierley who at the age of five got separated from his family in India, whilst he was waiting at a train station for his brother who never returned. After living on the streets of Calcutta for three weeks he was picked up by an orphanage and later adopted by an Australian couple. Based on the non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley the film explores the dynamics of our hyper-connected world and how Saroo managed to track down his family using Google Earth. The film stars Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman.
