In today's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast, co-host Mike DeAngelo dives back into “Under the Banner of Heaven.” The show follows a devout Mormon detective Jeb Pyre (played by Andrew Garfield) whose faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder seemingly connected to an esteemed Utah family's spiral into LDS Mormon fundamentalism and their distrust in the government. There's a terrific supporting cast involved too, including Gil Birmingham, Sam Worthington, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Chloe Pirrie, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, and more. Of the many stand-out performances on the show, Wyatt Russell's Dan Lafferty stands out as a particularly warped yet human take on how religious fundamentalism can lead to a dark moral-bending spiral and, ultimately, a complete loss of decency. Wyatt Russell sat down with host Mike DeAngelo to discuss getting this particularly dangerous role. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/support

Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, and Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including HBO's We Own This City; Netflix's Russian Doll S2; Disney Plus's Moon Knight; and AppleTV Plus's Severance & Pachinko. News Break – Alex, Bill, and Josh discuss all the latest news around Netflix's bad month, including their expected subscriber losses, their layoffs in editorial and animation, their ill-considered (in our opinion) plans to turn things around, and a recent piece from Vanity Fair reporting on their declining commitment to premium scripted content as the seek to broaden their appeal to a wider audience. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, and Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. This month, the guys AGAIN all voted unanimously, but this time it was for HBOMAX, as it's role in the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery corporation takes shape; it debuts some stellar TV (We Own This City, Barry, The Staircase, The Flight Attendant, Hacks); and The Batman breaks records. New Series Spotlight – Alex, Bill, and Josh watched Dustin Lance Black's tale of murder and corruption in a small Mormon town in Utah, Under the Banner of Heaven, starring Andrew Garfield, Daisy Edgar Jones, Wyatt Russell, Sam Worthington, and Gil Birmingham. What does this movie say about dichotomies of “cowboys n’ Indians” racial politics? Do we have a “noble savage” trope? What’s the deal with the Reservation as a setting? What about women in westerns? What’s scary about this movie, even though it’s not labeled “horror?” Did you like the dynamic between Cory and Jane? Brian Ralston, who has worked as a composer for 15 years, studied film music composition and conducting under film/TV composer Jeff Haskell at the University of Arizona, and completed graduate level work in the Scoring for Motion Pictures & Television program from the University of Southern California. Ralston's early aspirations for scoring films began in junior high school when he began re-scoring films using an old keyboard and VHS player. He took a particular interest in the work of American composer James Horner. Horner's ability to create a captivating, infectious melody through his interpretation of what was on screen, inspired Ralston to pursue his career in film music composition. Ralston's scoring projects includes the feature film “Awaken,” the syfy feature “Planet of the Sharks” and the score for 20th Century Fox's “Crooked Arrows” starring Brandon Routh and Gil Birmingham, directed by Steve Rash. Brian Ralston's most recent project is for the dramatic love story, BEING ROSE.The film is written and directed by Rod McCall, stars Cybill Shepherd, James Brolin and Pam Grier. “Being Rose” follows the story of a widowed ex-cop who discovers that she may have a life threatening illness and decides to go on a solo road trip in a motorized wheelchair. On her journey, Rose meets and falls in love with a charming cowboy, who has to come to a crossroads of his own. Rose soon discovers more than just the simple beauty of New Mexico. In this episode, Brian Ralston takes us through nine tracks from his score for BEING ROSE: sharing how he had to manage not being able to record with any of his musicians simultaneously in the same room; how he used specific instruments to represent the two main characters as well as the two main threads of the film: the love story and central character's spiritual journey.ANNOTATED TRACKS02:57 - "Prelude"03:57 - "The Journey Begins"07:15 - "Falling in Love"09:27 - "Leaving Something Behind"11:15 - "I'm Dying God Damn it."14:00 - "Roses' Instructions"15:14 - "Max Misses Rose"16:11 - "September/ The Long Car Ride"19:13 - "The Journey Ends"SOUNDTRACKThe original score was released on January 29, 2019 from Note For Note Entertainment and is available at Amazon.com, iTunes and streaming on Spotify and Apple Music.MORE ABOUT THE COMPOSERYou can find out more about and hear more music by Brian Ralston at his official site brianralston.com or follow him on twitter @brianralstonABOUT THE ANNOTATORProduced by Christopher Coleman (@ccoleman) and you can Find more episodes at THEANNOTATOR.NET or you can subscribe via iTunes, Stitcher Radio or wherever you find quality podcasts.FOLLOW USTwitter @audioannotatorFacebook @TheAnnotatorEmail theannotatorpodcast@gmail.comSUBSCRIBEiTunesSpotifyStitcher RadioRadioPublicGoogle Play PodcastsRSS Feed

After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. This led to his first acting experience, in a music video for Diana Ross, for her 1982 hit song "Muscles". After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2005, he was cast as the older Dogstar in the Steven Spielberg six-part miniseries Into the West. He recently played a Texas ranger a ranger, in Hell or High Water, opposite Jeff Bridges.

We review the new Taylor Sheriden film, 'Wind River' (Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Jon Bernthal, Gil Birmingham), and Al Gore's important, yet inconveniently titled documentary, 'An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power'. Darren prepares for his Palm Springs work-cation, Anthony has car trouble, and Katy Perry does how we do. We give you a peek behind the 'We Paid to See This' curtain, and describe the Lady Gaga show we haven't seen yet.

This week's Back to the Movies continues to bring us down from the loud and furious flash that resembles nothing of summer 2016 by taking a look at a lesser anticipated film titled Hell or High Water. This week's podcast is co-hosted by recurring guest host Dalton Stuart of The People's History of Film who swears he didn't know this movie was made just for him.Hell or High Water follows Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, Ben Foster, and Gil Birmingham in a game of cat and mouse between a pair of Texas Rangers as they investigate a string of bank robberies. At this point this modern western sounds like an age old story, but Hell or High Water doesn't just execute genre, but instead twists it into a far more ambiguous tale.Dalton and I talk about the film's portrayal of West Texas and Southwest Oklahoma and it's look at of complexities of fighting poverty. It's a real change of pace from most of the films that have been released this summer and I think you'll be quite surprised by the result. Like what you hear?
