Stoughton natives Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher have collected over 13,000 obscure and delightful VHS tapes and have been taking viewers on a guided tour of their best finds since 2004. Their live show is called Found Footage Festival, and it's coming to the Barrymore Theatre this Friday. In this episode, host Bianca Martin sits down with Joe and Nick to talk about how they got obsessed with old videos, where they find (and sometimes steal) VHS tapes, and how they pranked several local news stations across Wisconsin by pretending to be strongmen called âChop & Steele.â Mentioned on the show: Found Footage Festival Special Delivery! Alex Tribek Outtakes Diabetes v. Diabetuhs VCR Party Live!
This week's guest is Nick Prueher. For five years, Nick worked in the research department for Late Show with David Letterman, eventually becoming head researcher and a segment producer. Those years were filled with many interesting adventures working for the legendary broadcaster. In this episode, Nick and Mike scratch the surface of those adventures. When he left late show in 2004, he and his childhood best friend and comedy partner, Joe Pickett, founded the legendary Found Footage Festival. This led them on a 20-year-plus run of doing shows all across the country, showcasing the hilarious, unique brand they created and continue to curate to this very day. It also led Nick and Joe to a very interesting side project involving pranks that are extremely Letterman-ish. They were sued by one of the biggest media companies in America, ultimately vindicated, performed on the stage of America's Got Talent, and had a documentary made about them, Chop & Steele. Nick and Mike barely scratch the surface in this, Nick's first appearance on The Letterman Podcast. The Letterman Podcast is proudly sponsored by Hello-Deli.com! Are you ready to get buff? Boy, have you come to the right place! In this episode, we learn from the VERY REAL strongman duo, Chop and Steele. They'll lead you through workouts you've probably never heard ofâĤ like chopping twigs in half! Wanna work those legs? Try stomping on an Easter basket! When you're really ready to get your pump on, fill a jug with some leftover turbo gravy. Do a few reps. You'll definitely feel the burn! (What's turbo gravy, you ask? What a weird question! You've obviously never heard of Chef Keith Guerke.) âĤ are you starting to think that these guys aren't the real deal? Well, that probably means you're smarter than the morning news anchors who invited Chop and Steele on air. And now for a note about our process. For this episode, Kristin read a bunch of articles, then spat them back out in her very limited vocabulary. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: The documentary, âChop and Steeleâ âFake strongman duo Chop and Steele prank morning TV shows,â Found Footage Fest channel on YouTube âFake strongman duo Chop and Steele in North Dakota,â Found Footage Fest channel on YouTube âK-Strass the yo-yo guy super compilation,â Comedy for Profit channel on YouTube âThe Found Footage Festival has triumphed in its copyright lawsuit,â by Jim Vorel for Paste Magazine âGray Television Group, Inc v. Found Footage Festival, LLCâ court documents âChasing the story of Chop & Steeleâ by Richard Whittaker for the Austin Chronicle âMeet the comedy duo who got sued for pranking the news,â by Oliver Noble for Vice.com YOU'RE STILL READING? When all is said and done, the exploits of comedy pioneers Joe Pickett & Nick Prueher, founders of The Found Footage Festival, should be well documented and celebrated. Thankfully, not only are the life long friends and comedy partners back out on the road for the fest's latest edition, but they've got an astounding and nearly unbelievable documentary, Chop & Steele, following a giant media company suing them for doing a bit on a local morning news show set for release very soon (May 9th). Pickett and Prueher commitment to bits is almost unrivaled as they essentially making a living through having every bit of fun they possibly can conceive of. This week's TCB Field Report talks to Joe & Nick about their whole journey to court and back because of "news experiments" and the ethos behind their comedy that centers on awkward, cringe, and the "unintentional". Also, "hot' takes on Max (formerly HBO Max) ordering a new Big Bang Theory, Taiwanese Winnie-the-Pooh-getting-punched patches, and more. In 1989, VHS home viewing was on the rise, and Blockbuster was dominating the movie rental business, with one caveat: They had yet to acquire many kids' movies. At the same time, a 23-year-old film director set out to create a movie musical for kids about an imaginary friend who comes to life. For a brief period of time, the very low budget "Creating Rem Lezar," was one of the only kids movies on Blockbuster shelves across the U.S. When video stores started carrying Disney and the like, the blue-haired, tights-wearing hero was largely forgotten. Or was he? The cultural memory of this strange musical B-movie persisted, with memes appearing on eBaum's World in the early 2000s, and was later covered by the Found Footage Festival, an online community that excavates VHS ephemera from the pop culture dustbin. People around the world began to remember Rem Lezar, and popular Twitch streamers and YouTubers began referencing it in their videos. The direct-to-VHS kids musical had gained a second life (and cult following) on the modern Internet. Alli and Lindsey speak with Joe Pickett, co-creator of the Found Footage Festival, Jack Mulcahy, the actor who played Rem Lezar, and Scott Zakarin, the film's writer/director, about this strange renaissance, and the future of the film. So did Christopher Hewitt, the actor who played Mr. Belvedere, really have to miss a week of filming after accidentally sitting on his balls? Listen in this week to find out!

Shark Attack 3: Megalodon (2002) is how we open Sharksgiving. CGI sharks, stilted dialog and insane performances by our main cast members make this something special. Â Second half we briefly talk about the Found Footage Festival, Creature from the Black Lagoon and then take some listener correspondence. Enjoy! Â
Two guys from Wisconsin have turned their hobby of curating unintentionally funny videos into a career now spanning more than a decade.
In 2004, Nick along with Joe Pickett quit their day jobs to focus on production of their first feature documentary, Dirty Country. They started the touring The Found Footage Festival show to fund the production of the documentary.  The Found Footage Festival is a live comedy event and screening featuring unusual and humorous clips from VHS videotapes gathered from thrift stores, garage sales, warehouses, estate sales, and dumpsters throughout the United States. In 2009, Jack Rebney, featured in the festival favorite Winnebago promotional videos in the show, was featured in a documentary, Winnebago Man, which featured the curators in several interviews and coverage of Jack at the festival. The Found Footage Festival is currently based out of New York City and presented Found vs. Found in collaboration (and in friendly competition with) Found Magazine.  It has also expanded in touring Europe.
Nick Prueher and Joe Pickett from Found Footage Fesival sit down with Kurt by the pool of a swanky hotel in Miami and talk pets. Topics include professional yo-yo prank, topless girls, and their insane license photos. Kurt up top chats about American Airlines, TSA agents, and moisturizing lotion.
All bets are off when likeminded brothers-in-arms Nick and Joe from the Found Footage Festival "step behind the swinging saloon doors" with a bevy of brutal beauties! Â These cultivated curators of only the coolest and craziest VHS ephemera touch on the time they put on their video/comedy show in a technical school cafeteria during lunch and how they've competed with televised football and mechanical bulls games at sports bars, as well as all of the technical foibles that happen along the way. Â We also go deep into their love and fascination with this outdated media format, the band-like intensity that goes into their touring schedule, and why the term "VHS players" makes us want to gag. Â Be kind and rewind this week's episode of WORST GIG EVER!
