Yes, I get some things are nuanced, but the vast majority of things are not: good/evil, right/wrong, black/white, yes/no, masculine/feminine; light/dark. I am not against nuance per se, but only as long as we don't forget the essential core truths that right 90% of the time. Yes, this episode, is a celebration of your conservative uncle, one of the most unnuanced people that that you know. He may think simplistically, but he's probably right most of the time. Trust dogmatic binary. Be skeptical of nuance before deviating from core truths. I explore this work through the work of Randy Pausch's Last Lecture, and the work of Carl Jung. I also offer an exercise from Pausch's book that will help connect you to the core dogmatic dualism that you should embrace.

Sometimes older generations sweep them away with broad brushes to the point they are discouraged from even having an opinion. True, not all opinions are workable, but some are. For starters, no one knows how each generation thinks better than that generation. How to reach Millennials and Gen Zs? Sit down and have a conversation. 7. A shift from affluence to sufficiency. Rather than being impressed by big churches with big budgets, Millennials and Gen Z have a more minimalist mindset: God gives us enough, so let's use our God-gifts “as we have opportunity.” They see affluence leading toward less reliance upon God and more reliance on self (they are right). After all, if we have everything we need, why pray/surrender? Church affluence (big buildings, big debt, and giving to service the debt) is seen as opposite of Scripture-principle. 8. A shift from large buildings to homes. Church buildings that once housed hundreds (some places) are down to dozens while sitting on expensive pieces of property. Millennials ask, “Why?” Sometimes wisdom behooves us to downsize, seek greater kingdom vision than property maintenance, and move forward in more intimate ways to facilitate growth. I know Millennials who open their homes to weeknight studies. FYI: many of them do not have big homes. 9. A shift from “done for you” to “done with you.” Rather than looking at the back of heads, we may see more circle seating where worship is face-to-face. This translates historically -from long buildings of double aisles (50s-60s) to more rounded seating (70s-90s). It's happening again. Younger generations seek more participation–less “spectation,” more activity–less passivity, more connection–less anonymity. Bottom line: they want to be used.Changes in thinking don't need to be unbiblical changes (auto default when questioning man-tradition). First, those with overseas travel experience know that brethren often do what God asks in expedient ways that work in their culture. Second, we obviously saw changes in a post-covid culture. Now, as culture changes more, will we notice and adapt (in biblical ways)?10. A shift from going to church to being the church. Explain: Millennials hear “going to church” and equate with “going through the motions” and box-checking -because they've seen these attitudes displayed. They want more than ritual that doesn't produce heart change. They want to be the church, live the gospel, and make disciples of those who look different than they do. Millennials and Gen Z do not care about race or socio-economic differences. 11. A shift from big-names to no-names. Millennials and Gen Z don't care about big name preachers -they have no idea who they are anyway. They seek meaningful lives with God, a way to introduce friends to Jesus, and invest in a Good News message that changes people. Some of the biggest influencers for the gospel in days to come may be names you've never heard of.12. A shift from dogmatic to pragmatic. Dogmatic: we're going to do what we've always done whether it works or not. Pragmatic: we're going to look for ways to get the gospel out of a church building and into the public square. It's one reason coffee shop studies are gaining momentum (and conversions). Pragmatic and practical optimizes the first two letters in “gospel” – GO!We must be like those who “understood the times” (1 Chron.12:32).  Many Millennials and Gen Zs are active in standing for truth/sharing their faith. However, status quo is not a part of their vocabulary.

Why Do We Call God Father? Son? Holy Spirit? This is a brief survey of the eternal processions in God as it is found in Scripture, in Christian history, and in clearer dogmatic statements such as what is found in 2LCF 2.3.

In this episode Faern returns to defining DOGMA and how when philosophy becomes dogmatic it is inherently unhelpful. To her it is looking like a major source of confusion comes from the limitations often created in translation mixed with people needing to HAVE THE ANSWER so badly or something of the sort. (Our previous episode has more on this). All in All it is important to develop discernment when adding anything into your spiritual practices on your path because there is always another layer of energy we may not have a direct view of but we are ALWAYS interacting within it. Some practices do expire as well- which on one hand could mean no one is paying attention to it, and on the other hand it ran its course and people will benefit from leaving it behind now. 21st verse: “There are three gates to a hellish life – hellish conditions created from our own actions. These three gates are lust, anger and greed (kamah, krodhah, lobhah). These three should be abandoned.”Every wrong action has desire or lust as its source. Once we have a desire, we direct our senses and energy to fulfill that desire. Not all desires are fulfilled. When the desire remains unfulfilled, we become angry. And then there is endless greed.22nd verse: “The genuine spiritual seeker, who has gone beyond these three gates, who is free from lust, anger and greed, he does things that are good for himself and others. He does not see distinction between himself and others. What is good for him will naturally be good for others.”23rd verse: “Those who act under the impulse of desire and ignore the fundamental principle – to act in accordance with shastram – they will not attain perfection, they will not attain happiness, and they will not reach their spiritual destination.”The literal, dictionary meaning of shastram may be science and theological scriptures. The true spiritual meaning of shastram is that which helps us conduct our life without desire, greed and anger. Shastram is that which helps us conduct our life in such a way that it becomes a blessing for ourselves and others.24th verse: “Therefore this shastram should be your pramanam (authority) in ascertaining what ought to be done and what ought not to be done.”Shastram also means spiritual heritage, accumulated spiritual wisdom, and teachings of great men and women who helped humanity preserve its values. Shastram is the totality of the best elements of human civilization.Civilization was able to preserve those best elements, that sanctity, that tradition because the exponents of these values had no selfish desire, no anger, and no greed.Bhagavata Purana has the following verse: “When honey bees go from one flower to another, whether it is a tiny or big flower, they only collect and imbibe its essence, the honey. They ignore everything else. Similarly, we should only imbibe the highest and most universal spiritual teachings. A wise person should only collect the essence and practice it in his own life – only then it becomes effective.”To emphasize the importance of spiritual practice and realization, Sri Ramakrishna used to give the example of almanac. The almanac has forecasts on rain, but if one takes the almanac and squeezes it, there won't be a drop of rain. It is true that many teachings are recorded in the scriptures. But they are useless without the effort to practice and imbibe these teachings and realize God.Shraddha refers to a sense of sanctity and sacredness that helps us preserve higher values. It can also mean faith in scriptures, oneself, God, teacher, and inner consciousness. Shraddha can also mean concentration.Arjuna had shraddha but did not understand shastram. The 17th chapter starts with this doubt in Arjuna. He asks the question: “Those who have a high degree of shraddha but do not know how to follow shastram, what happens to them?” The 17th chapter deals with three levels of shraddha.The essence of Arjuna's question is: “Do spirituals directly talk to us?” For a true spiritual seeker, if his mind is pure and sincere, the whole nature becomes an open book, an open university, an open education institution – he learns from everything.Bhagavata Purana has the legend of Avadhuta who learns spiritual lessons from birds, honey bees, elephants, fish and others from nature. His own mind helps him become a good student and learn from everything in nature. If the mind is pure, it captures the essence of spirituality from everything in this world. Otherwise, there is no end to doubts.Spiritual questions go through a process of self-destruction. They cease to be questions as we spiritually evolve. There are no shortcuts in spiritual evolution – it is a gradual process of evolution.Dogmatic approach does not allow one to evolve to a level of spiritual fitness to make use of what one learns – a dogmatic approach expects the student to just accept it. This is the opposite of shraddha. In Vedanta lineage, the teacher first elevates the student to a higher level where the student is naturally fit to accept the higher truth. For example, Sri Ramakrishna taught Advaita to Swami Vivekananda because he was spiritually ready. Other disciples wanted to learn Advaita, but Sri Ramakrishna did not teach them.In the 63rd verse of the 18th chapter, Lord Krishna says: “I have taught you this great spiritual truth. You analyze what I have taught you, use your own reasoning and do what you want.” This verse emphasizes the importance of spiritual freedom and encourages one to think for oneself. It also indicates that we can only learn from a book or teacher what we deserve to learn, what our mind is ready to learn.Our temperaments are determined by a combination of the three gunas – sattva guna, rajo guna and tamo guna. Sattva guna is the highest and most sublime. It manifests itself as wisdom and serenity. Rajo guna manifests itself as dynamism and ambition. Tamo guna manifests itself as laziness and delusion.One has to understand where he stands and start climbing the ladder from tamo guna to rajo guna to sattva guna. Highest spiritual evolution happens when we transcend the three gunas. Such a person is called Guṇātita – he is active but remains serene and detached. Swami Trigunatitananda demonstrated this in his life's work.
