At a certain point in human history, mundane spices like pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, the stuff you have shoved in the back of your cabinet right now, made one company so much money it is still considered one of the valuable to ever exist. Not only were they extremely successful at running spice, they almost served as a country unto themselves. The Dutch government had granted the VOC (the acronym for the company in its native Dutch and so much easier to type) a monopoly on the spice trade from the Indies for 21 years. Combine that with permission to establish new colonies or outposts, dispense its own justice, make treaties with other rulers or governments, and operate its own Navy and soldiers. The VOC was a nation in more ways than some actual nations were. Other advantages the VOC had in ship building, it includes windmills, and the ability to raise capital with the advent of the stock exchange. The creation of shares in voyages would make its way to New Amsterdam in North America, soon to become New York City, you know, where the New York Stock Exchange is....seeing the connection here. Any way you slice it the VOC was huge, but as always, success does not come without a cost and boy did a lotta people pay for it. If you're still reading you can stop now and start the episode. Support the show

Two are fictional: the Flying Dutchman, a flute from the Age of Sails that would have traded between Amsterdam and the Spice Islands, and the Caleuche, a legendary ship on the island of Chiloe, Chile. Two are real: the Mary Celeste that mysteriously lost her crew in the Atlantic Ocean, and the Baychimo, which was abandoned but unexpectedly kept wandering for decades in the waters north of Canada and Alaska. Welcome to Lights Out LibraryJoin me for a sleepy adventure tonight. Historian Giles Milton joins Miranda and Paul to talk about the life and times of William Adams, an English navigator who was part of a Dutch expedition to the Spice Islands. Adrift in the Pacific, they ran aground in Japan, then a closed and secretive land in the grip of brutal civil war. Unusually for a European, Adams integrated into Japanese society and developed a strong working relationship with the all-powerful shōgun. Giles told Adams' story in his book 'Samurai William'. Also inspired by the real tale was James Clavell, whose 1975 novel 'Shōgun' was recently adapted as a major drama series by Disney+. '1666 and All That' is presented by Paul Lay and Miranda Malins. The producer is Hugh Costello. Original music is by George Taylor. The episode was mixed by Sam Gunn.

Hello!According to some definitions, "Globalisation is a term used to describe how trade and technology have made the world into a more connected and interdependent place." But this is not a new phenomenon. For many centuries, this process was happening driven partly or mostly because of the lust for spices. Rare, highly prized and expensive.Today we will explore the history of three of these spices which are so important to the story of our globalised world. But most importantly this story is also a story of the Spice Islands; Deep in Indonesia, there where the amazing local sailors and merchants of Banda Islands. The Bandanese became the undisputed leaders of the inter island trade of spices, travelling in fleets of kora-kora canoes, propelled by rowers on platforms of bamboo lashed five feet away on either side of the canoe proper...Our spices:-"Karyophyllon" in Ancient Greek was our Cloves. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder (23-79 CE) was the first to describe cloves in the West in his Natural History (70 CE) where he recorded that “there is also in India a grain resembling that of pepper but larger and more fragile, called caryophyllom, which is reported to grow on the Indian lotus tree; it is imported here for the sake of its scent”-Nutmeg and mace are frequently mentioned in the oldest scriptures of Hinduism in India, the Vedas, composed between 1500 and 1000 BCE.-Madagascar is synonymous with vanilla. But what we know and think and eat as vanilla, is not native to Madagascar; it originated some 10,000 miles away...Let's find out!Music by Pavlos KapralosLove,The Delicious LegacySupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-delicious-legacy. All Aqua Expedition ships get a full refurbishment every year. They are kept in top condition. Aqua Blu holds no more than 30 guests onboard. . Aqua Blue visits the Komodo Islands, Raja Ampat and the Spice Islands. . From April to September, you will find them in Bali and the Komodo Islands. In October & November, you will visit the Spice Islands December, January & February, we go to the Raja Ampat region. In all of these regions, you can set sail for 7 nights. Of course, you will need to get from one region to the other, and some cruise lines call these repositioning cruises, but Aqua Expeditions calls these itineraries 12-night cross-destination expeditions . The top-selling itinerary I will need to book you on early is the itinerary incorporating the Spice Islands with Raja Ampat. You can also explore the itinerary that incorporates the forgotten Islands and spice islands and a little bit of the band of Sea Islands along the way. . Let's start with Raja Ampat: This is the number one diving site in the world, it is on the top of the bucket list for people who dive or even snorkel. It is the most marine bio-diverse island on the planet. There's so much to see here on land and by the water. . Moving on to Komodo/Flores In this area, you will enjoy the absolute highlight of this cruise! You will be taken out in a small boat. They will take you to a location only known to Aqua Expeditions, where you can experience a Blue Whale Shark sighting! This is a very rare and special experience in which you can experience the blue whale shark sightings. Aqua Expeditions is the only vessel to experience this. They have a great friendship with some of the local fishermen. This takes place very early in the morning. You were awakened to depart for this special activity even before sunrise. As the fishermen throw their nets into the water, small pieces of fish go into the water, and it attracts the Blue Whale Sharks. The Blue Whales emerge from beneath the ocean. You don't have to be in the water to experience this. But, many people hop into the water and experience swimming with the Blue Whale Sharks. It is life-changing! . Next, we discussed the seven-night Comodo National Park to Bali itinerary. 12 Night Flores to Spice Islands Maumere to Ambon. . Spice IslandsCenturies ago, this was the only place where spices like cinnamon and nutmeg were grown. This was an important island and an important region. The itineraries on Aqua Blue are: Raja Ampat -- Round-trip Raja Ampat to Spice Islands - -Cross-Destination Spice Islands to Flores -- Cross-Destination Bali to Komodo National Park -- Bi-Directional Komodo National Park to Bali -- Bi-Directional Flores (Labuan Baio) to Spice Islands -- Cross-DestinationAmbon & Spice Islands - Round-trip Spice Islands to Raja Ampat -- Cross-Destination. The Nao Victoria, the first ship to circumnavigate the globe, arrived back to its starting point in Spain on 6th September, 1522, with one person notably missing: Ferdinand Magellan, the man who had initiated the audacious voyage. Through a mixture of hubris and misfortune Magellan had come to a rather sticky end just before reaching his intended destination of the Moluccas, otherwise known as the Indonesian Spice Islands. But even though the expedition – which Magellan had hoped would open a western route to Asia – was unsuccessful, its contribution to Europeans' understanding of the globe was immeasurable.    In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly look at the countless disasters, mutinies and impediments Magellan faced during his journey; discuss why the Spice Islands were so important to Europeans in the 16th century; and explain why you can never pack too much wine and hardtack when attempting to circumnavigate the globe…  Further Reading: ‘A voyage from hell: how Magellan's circumnavigation of the world changed history' (History Extra, 2019): https://www.historyextra.com/period/tudor/how-magellan-circumnavigation-world-changed-history-what-was-voyage-like/  ‘Ferdinand Magellan' (History.com, 2023): https://www.history.com/topics/exploration/ferdinand-magellan  ‘The greatest expeditions of mankind - Magellan and the space race' (DW Documentary; 2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5TP1k9z4ak  #Europe #1900s #explorer #person #Spain #Portugal  Love the show? This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Tuesday, July 11th, 2023. Fight Laugh Feast Conference - Ark Encounter This year, our Fight Laugh Feast Conference is at the Ark Encounter in Kentucky on The Politics of Six Day Creation. The politics of six day creation is the difference between a fixed standard of justice and a careening standard of justice, the difference between the corrosive relativism that creates mobs and anarchy and the freedom of objectivity, truth, and due process. The politics of six day creation establishes the authority and sufficiency of God’s Word for all of life: from what is a man or a woman, when does human life begin, and how is human society best organized? Come hear Ken Ham, Pastor Doug Wilson, Dr. Ben Merkle, Dr. Gordon Wilson, me and more, and of course a live CrossPolitic show! Mark your calendars for October 11th-14th, as we fight, laugh, and feast, with beer & psalms, our amazing lineup of speakers, our Rowdy Christian Merch, and a Sabbath Feast to wrap up the occasion. Maybe an infant baptism while we’re at it! Tennessee's 44th House District Representative William Lamberth (R) wrote on Twitter Saturday: "I am thankful to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals for confirming what Tennesseans already know: Children cannot give consent to experimental medical procedures or drugs that destroy their healthy bodies," The Tennessee law now in effect, at least temporarily, prohibits surgical procedures and administration of hormones or puberty blockers for the purpose of gender transition, as Reason explains. Judge Thapar joined Sutton, concluding that the lower court had wrongly stopped the law's implementation. Judge White delivered a separate opinion concurring in part and dissenting in part. The ban, originally set to take effect July 1, will now take effect immediately. The ban was held up when a lower court sided with the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee. ACLU-TN argued that the law interfered with parental rights and was unconstitutional, as The Hill reported. This is the first federal court to allow such a ban, with other courts unanimously blocking similar bans in Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Indiana, and Kentucky, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee. ACLU-TN brought the suit on behalf of Samantha and Brian Williams of Nashville and their 15-year-old daughter, as well as two other anonymous families and Dr. Susan N. Lac. https://dailycaller.com/2023/07/09/portland-distribute-foil-straws-snorting-kits-paraphernalia-drug-addicts/ City To Distribute Foil, Straws, Snorting Kits To Drug Addicts Health officials in Portland, Oregon announced last week they will begin handing out tin foil, straws and snorting kits to drug addicts throughout the city. As part of its “Harm Reduction Program,” the Multnomah County Health Department announced Friday that drug paraphernalia will be offered to those using fentanyl and other hard drugs, KOIN 6 reported. The rise of fentanyl has decreased the need for needle-focused “harm reduction” services, Department spokeswoman Sarah Dean told the Willamette Week. Since fentanyl is smoked rather than injected, clinic visits have dropped 60% since 2019, Dean said. The program is backed by Multnomah County’s Public Health Director, Jessica Guernsey, who says, “The new part of the program is that we’re adding supplies for people who smoke drugs.” Others are not happy with the move. “This misguided approach also results in greater risk to public safety for those who simply want to enjoy our city without walking through a cloud of toxic smoke,” Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said. “Our community would benefit more from the County using its funding to urgently increase treatment and sobering facilities rather than actively enabling this deadly epidemic.” Dean countered the mayor’s statement by claiming providing drug paraphernalia does not increase drug use but encourages addicts to visit clinics where they can get access to fentanyl test strips and the overdose antidote, Narcan, KOIN 6 reported. The Oregon Legislative Assembly recently passed a bill decriminalizing the distribution of “drug paraphernalia” for harm reduction purposes, according to the Willamette Week. Similar programs have been launched in Washington and California. In New York City, vending machines with smoking kits and bubble pipes have recently been installed, the outlet reported. The Oregon bill to decriminalize distribution of drug paraphernalia sits on Governor Tina Kotek’s desk awaiting signature before going into law, the New York Post reported. https://hotair.com/karen-townsend/2023/07/09/the-winner-of-miss-netherlands-2023-is-a-man-n563401 The winner of Miss Netherlands 2023 is a man Transgender activism marches on. The newly crowned Miss Universe Netherlands is a man. The runner-up is a woman. Rikkie Valerie Kollé was crowned Miss Universe Netherlands 2023 on Saturday. Rikkie is 22 years old, a Dutch-Moluccan model and actress in Leusden. He will represent the Netherlands at the 2023 Miss Universe pageant in El Salvador. The first runner-up is Nathalie Mogbelzada, 26, from Amsterdam. The reigning Miss Universe, R’Bonney Gabriel of Houston, Texas, was a special guest at the pageant. He makes history as the first transgender woman to win the national title. In 2018, Angele Ponce, Miss Universe Spain, was the first transgender to participate in the Miss Universe pageant. The question of having a transgender competitor in the Miss Universe pageant goes back to 2012. That is when Trump owned it and he overturned a decision by the Miss Universe organization to disqualify a Canadian model. Jenna Talackova was not being allowed to compete because “she was not a naturally born female.” Trump bowed to the laws of Canada and allowed Jenna to compete. The LGBTQ community applauded Trump. Now he’s running against a very socially conservative Republican, Ron DeSantis, among others, and Trump has flipped on the issue. The Miss America pageant is also having its share of problems. Ever since former Fox anchor Gretchen Carlson came out as super woke and joined the organization, internal battles have leaked into the press. One big issue is that when Carlson joined the organization in 2018, she made the decision to ban the swimsuit segment. Now a former Miss America, Caressa Cameron, says that the pageant feels like a Ted Talk. There is a new docuseries on A&E that exposes scandals, misogyny, and racism in the Miss America competitions. Now in world news: https://www.foxnews.com/us/us-centcom-says-killed-isis-leader-syria-airstrike-no-civilian-casualties US CENTCOM says it killed ISIS leader in Syria airstrike, no civilian casualties U.S. forces killed ISIS leader Usamah al-Muhajir in an airstrike in eastern Syria on Friday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a Sunday statement. Al-Muhajir was killed by the same MQ-9 reaper drones that had been harassed by Russian aircraft in the region. The two incidents occurred the same day, the U.S. says, with the drones carrying out the strike after the interaction with Russian craft. "We have made it clear that we remain committed to the defeat of ISIS throughout the region," said CENTCOM commander Gen. Michael Kurilla. "ISIS remains a threat, not only to the region but well beyond." CENTCOM clarified that there were no indications that any civilians were killed in the strike, but the U.S. and allies were assessing reports of a civilian injury. The U.S. and allied forces in the region have carried out a consistent campaign against remaining ISIS leaders operating in Syria. The U.S. killed the head of the organization, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in a 2019 raid. Since then, ISIS forces have operated as cells. The MQ-9 drones used in the attack had earlier interactions with Russian SU-35 fighter jets throughout last week. The Russian craft have repeatedly flown into the path of the drones, forcing them to take evasive action to avoid a collision. "Russian military aircraft engaged in unsafe and unprofessional behavior Thursday, 9:30 a.m. local time, while interacting with U.S. MQ-9 drones carrying out our D-ISIS mission in Syria," said Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, commander, 9th AF and CFACC for CENTCOM. "Russian aircraft dropped flares in front of the drones and flew dangerously close, endangering the safety of all aircraft involved." "This is the second instance of dangerous behaviors by Russian pilots within the past 24 hours, with the first happening Wednesday at approximately 10:40 a.m. local time," he added. The U.S. military has also urged Russian forces in Syria to "cease this reckless behavior and adhere to the standards of behavior expected of a professional air force, so we can resume our focus on the enduring defeat of ISIS," he said. The U.S. maintains a force of about 900 troops deployed in Syria. They primarily work with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in their struggle against Islamic State militants. Now in entertainment… https://thepostmillennial.com/cnn-discourages-viewers-from-watching-anti-pedophile-movie-sound-of-freedom?utm_campaign=64487 CNN discourages viewers from watching anti-pedophile movie, Sound of Freedom In a clip from CNN, network host Abby Phillip brought on an author named Mike Rothschild to talk about the new and popular anti-child sex trafficking film, Sound of Freedom. Rothschild charged the film is created out of a "moral panic" and "QAnon concepts." Sound of Freedom is based on the adventures of Tim Ballard, who started an organization known as Operation Underground Railroad (OUR). OUR's mission is to save children from human trafficking. Rothschild wrote a book titled, "The Storm is Upon Us," which details many QAnon conspiracy theories such as the idea that the Democratic Party elites are part of a cabal of Satanic worshippers that drink the blood of children. Rothschild targeted said the film is "being marketed to either specific QAnon believers or to people who believe all of the same tenets as QAnon, but claim they don't know what it is." https://rumble.com/v2yw470-cnn-encourages-viewers-not-to-see-anti-pedophile-movie-sound-of-freedom.html - Play Video CNN has had its own problems with employees being involved in child sex crimes. One former producer at the network, John Griffin, was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Griffin coerced a woman online to bring her nine-year-old daughter to Vermont to engage in illicit acts. The story depicted in the film is of Ballard, played by Caviezel, rescuing children. After much strife with working in the US government, he bumps up against bureaucracy in his position as an agent. He had to quit his job to rescue the kids in the film and did so in reality as well. This was the beginning of OUR as a non-government organization. The movie focuses on Ballard's mission to save the two children and reunite a family torn apart by child sex trafficking. At the end of the movie, Caviezel appears on screen with a special message to share and urges people to "pay it forward" and donate to allow others to see the film. Caviezel says, "Steve Jobs once said, 'The most powerful person in the world is the storyteller.' Abraham Lincoln credited Harriet Stowe when she wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. This powerful story inspired millions to rise up and fight against slavery. I think we can make Sound of Freedom the Uncle Tom's Cabin of modern-day slavery." "Sound of Freedom is a hero's tale, but I'm not talking about the character I play. It's the heroic brother and sister in this film that work to save each other." Caviezel added, "Together, we have a chance to make these two kids, and the countless children that they represent, the most powerful people in the world by telling their story in a way only the cinema can do." He ordered the wayward king to abandon the newly crowned and pregnant Anne Boleyn and return to Catherine of Aragon. If the king refused then the Pope would issue the bull of excommunication that he had drawn up. He’d give Henry until September to sort himself out, but if he didn’t heed the Pope’s warning then he’d be excommunicated, the most severe punishment that the Church could inflict. Of course, Henry took absolutely no notice of the Pope, but he escaped excommunication until 17th December 1538 when Pope Paul III excommunicated him following his break with Rome, his persecution of those who did not accept his supremacy, the dissolution of the monasteries and Henry’s desecration of religious shrines including that of Thomas Becket. 1576 English explorer Martin Frobisher sights Greenland 1740 Jews are expelled from Little Russia by order of Tsarina Anne 1781 Thomas Hutchins designated Geographer of US By the age of 30, the remarkable Thomas Hutchins (1730?-1789) was an experienced frontiersman, a veteran of the French and Indian War, and a skilled Indian agent. It's the heroic brother and sister in this film that work to save each other." Caviezel added, "Together, we have a chance to make these two kids, and the countless children that they represent, the most powerful people in the world by telling their story in a way only the cinema can do." Before we wrap up today’s show, let’s talk about on this day in history! He ordered the wayward king to abandon the newly crowned and pregnant Anne Boleyn and return to Catherine of Aragon. A native of New Jersey, the particular combination of skills made Hutchins the perfect candidate for surveying the vast western regions of the British North American empire. In 1766, he was officially assigned to duty as an engineer in the British army, gradually becoming the most respected surveyor and map maker in the colonies. From 1764 through 1768, he took part in expeditions spanning the west from the northern reaches of the Mississippi Valley to New Orleans, and in 1770, was transferred from the Illinois territory to Pensacola, where he was charged with reorganizing the provincial defenses and mapping. 1798 US Marine Corps established by an act of Congress 1801 French astronomer Jean-Louis Pons discovers his 1st comet 1882 British fleet bombards Alexandria, Egypt 1906 The Gillette-Brown murder inspires Theodore Dreiser's "An American Tragedy" 1960 "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee is first published by J. Last year my husband started working for Cunard and so we are really new to cruising but want to make the most of his staff discount. We have a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords booked for July 2023, 7 nights out of Southampton on Queen Victoria. So far the only excursion we've booked is a visit to Briksdal Glacier. We have done lots of research and feel happy with this as the only pre-booked cruise line excursion. The other port days we are happy to just wander nearby to the ship and see where we end up. My question is, do you feel that you can get the best out of port days just going with the flow or do you prefer pre-booked and organised trips? Sitting on a coach with 60 other people looking at passing views is my idea of hell, I'd much rather put on some hiking boots and walk to a waterfall. Love the show, especially Chris's Cunard insights, hope to catch an enrichment talk one day!Baz suggests look at the independant shore excursions operators such as Venture Ashore: https://www.ventureashore.com/Listener Question from KeithWhile cruising recently on Holland America's Nieuw Statendam, I noticed an interesting shape on the rear of the hull below deck 1.  What is the purpose of the extended structure at the rear of the ship beneath the mooring lines?  When viewed from the rear or side, most of the “extension” is above the water.BazCruise NewsViking Opens up 2025 River Cruises for sale Due to overwhelming demand, Viking's 2025 river voyages are now open for sale.  This response comes as Viking celebrated record-breaking sales in January and earning top honours in the Cruise Critic 2023 Cruisers' Choice Awards across river, ocean and expedition categories. It is the first time Viking has three river seasons open for sale at once, providing guests with more choice when selecting their next unforgettable journey.Viking started the year with record-breaking sales in January and this demand has only continued throughout the following months. Kathleen from Plenty of Sunshine Travel met with Monika from Aqua Expeditions for this week's cruise chat. . I love meeting new cruise lines, so this was extra special to me, as it was the first time I had the chance to meet with Aqua Expeditions. . Monika did an excellent brand overview! Aqua has five ships. Three River Expeditions: Aqua Mare. Aqua Nera. Aria Amazon. Two Yacht Expeditions Aqua Mekong Aqua Blu Aqua Expeditions has five pillars of distinction: SERVICE ~ Personalized luxury travel experiences with a 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio. DESIGN ~ State-of-the-art designed vessels. WILDLIFE, ADVENTURE AND CULTURE ~ Authentic tailor-made soft adventures. CUISINE ~ world-renowned chefs. RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL ~ Wildlife conservation programs and local community support. The ship's capacity is 16 to 40 guests and the same crew. All of your shore excursions are included in the fare. One of the shore excursions they offer - that I have not seen before - is fishing for piranhas. COOL! . Aqua Expeditions teams up with local chefs who offer local ingredients so you not only explore the areas you're visiting with your eyes and your body but also taste the areas you are visiting, giving you a more profound immersion experience. Aqua Expeditions honestly believe in sustainable travel. One example of this is the rugs that are on board Aqua Nera. The rugs are made with recycled fishing lines pulled from the waters they travel through. In addition, they had local artisans weave beautiful rugs with ocean materials. Aqua visits the Peruvian Amazon. The area that Aqua Expedition goes through is a protected rainforest, and it is protected from humans altering it in any way. The ships are designed to be environmentally friendly, and the excursions too. The Aqua Nera holds 40 passengers, and the Aqua Amazon has 32 passengers. . Aqua Mare has a capacity of 16 guests. . In the Galapagos islands, you will find two itineraries to choose from or do both for a 14-day cruise. Your cruise will depart from Embark at Baltra Island on Day 1 Day 2 - Bahía Borrero, Santa Cruz Island Bahía Darwin. El BarrancoGenovesa Island Day 3 - Bahía Sullivan, Santiago Island Sombrero Chino Island Day 4 Bartolomé Island, Cerro Dragón, Day 5 El Chato Giant Tortoise Reserve, Fausto Llerena Breeding Center, Santa Cruz Island. Day 6 Punta Suárez, Bahía Gardner, Islote Osborn, Española Island Day 7 Santa Fé (Barrington) Island, Plaza Sur Island Day 8 Los Gemelos, Santa Cruz Island . The other itinerary is: Day 1 Embarkation At Puerto Ayora, And Manzanillo Ranch, Santa Cruz Island. Day 2 Punta Cormorant, Bahía Post Office, And Mirador De La Baronesa, Floreana Island. We have a two for one today, covering not one but TWO chapters! Chapter 11 was a great segue into setting up the next part of “How the Philippines was Conquered by conquistadors”. Entitled: Gold, God, & Glory, Ate Judy puts together a timeline of 1519 to 1564 where it continues on the narrative of when Spanish captain, Hernan Cortes, claimed Nueva Espana, or Mexico, for Spain. Spain continued its quest to send expeditioners to the Spice Islands after Magellan's voyage. According to historians Nicholas Cushner, Charles Mann, and John Leddy Phalan - the true nature of man desiring gold and glory in the name of their God was inspired by knowing the price of spice, such as pepper, was a hot commodity. Chapter 12 is all about the year 1565, where Legazpi makes his journey to Samar in the Visayas, to Manicani Island, Babalian, Limasawa or Massua, Butuan, to Mindanao, and finally to Mactan in Cebu on April 27 of 1565. Along the way he is and is not received by Filipinos. After years of mistrust and betrayal, it was confirmed by a captured chief during a conflict– that the Portuguese put a stain on Filipinos receiving any foreigners to their shore lands. This chapter speaks of betrayal on betrayal on betrayal. Oh the ways man betrays man. So, now we know Magellan was killed at the battle of Mactan by the hand of Cilapulapu. Whose running the ships and crew, now? According to Pigafetta, the men elected 2 commanders, Magellan's Portuguese brother-in-law, Duarte Barbosa & Joao Serrao. Both men had ties to Magellan, and we read that even if they did not like Magellan, both commanders respected him. Which leads us to our second point of noting that Magellan was widely disliked by his own people, which has been debatable if his demise was caused by not being liked or supported by crew members. For example, Ate Judy brings up Enrique, the translator slave Magellan had captured years ago - where was he during the battle and where/when he met his own demise as well? Either way, the narrative continues to portray how upon post-Magellan's death, both commanders accepted an invitation from Rajah Humabon to come to shore to retrieve jewels for the King of Spain and dine with them. Listen in to find out what happened when they came to shore and if Magellan's crew ever found the Spice Islands like they originally set out to do. So, Ferdinand Magellan. Villain? Visionary? Friend? Foe? Hero? This chapter provided the unfolding timeline of Magellan's objective to “make a name for himself” like other Portugese explorers; by originally setting out to bring commerce to the Spice Islands, particularly Moluccas, as a part of the Indonesian archipelago. Most Filipinos were told that Magellan's purpose was to bring Christianity to the islands. Ate Judy cites a lot of Laurence Bergreen's Over The Edge of the World, Pigafetta, and Enrique's lenses. We learn that Magellan was born in 1480 and became part of the royal court, which allowed him access to education and resources. The bulk of this chapter tells the tales of the emerging friendship between the Filipino King, Rajah Kolambu. Tune in and let us know your own hot takes on Magellan! On 20 September 1519 the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan left Spain and headed westwards on a voyage that would subsequently echo through the centuries as the first circumnavigation of the earth. The riches of Asia were first tasted by the Portuguese in the late 1490s but the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas reserved for Portugal the eastern-bound maritime routes to Asia. It thus became commercially imperative for the Spanish to find a western-route to Asia, and in particular to the riches of the Spice Islands in the south western Pacific where nutmeg, mace and cloves were to be exclusively discovered. Magellan's subsequent voyage is both well known and poorly understood. For centuries, Ferdinand Magellan has been celebrated as a hero: a noble adventurer who circumnavigated the globe in an extraordinary feat of human bravery; a paragon of daring and chivalry. Magellan, in fact, did not attempt – much less accomplish – a journey around the globe, and in his own lifetime the explorer was actually abhorred as a traitor, reviled as a tyrant and dismissed as a failure. His real ambitions were in fact, focused less on circumnavigating the world or cornering the global spice market and more on exploiting Filipino gold. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke to the brilliant historian who has made this case and untangled the myths that made Magellan a hero, Felipe Fernandez Armesto. Felipe occupies the William P. Reynolds Chair at the University of Notre Dame, where he is a professor of history and, concurrently, of classics and of the history and philosophy of science. Hosted on Acast. Swashbuckling adventure during the great Age of Sail. With Bonaparte held to a stalemate in Europe, the race to empire is now resumed. Britain's ambitions turn to the Spice Islands, the Dutch East Indies, where Admiral Pellew has been sent to confront the enemy's vastly rich holdings in these tropical islands. Captain Sir Thomas Kydd joins reinforcements to snatch these for the British Crown. The two colonial masters of India and the East Indies face each other in mortal striving for the region—there can be only one victor to hold all the spoils. The colonial genius, Stamford Raffles, believes Britain should strike at the very centre of Dutch spice production, the Moluccas, rather than the fortresses one by one but is fiercely opposed. Kydd, allying himself to this cause, conspires to lead a tiny force to a triumphant conclusion—however the Dutch, stung by this loss, claim vengeance from the French. A battle for Java and an empire in the East stretches Kydd and Tyger's company to their very limits.

El DoradoWhen Christopher Columbus sailed west from Spain in 1492, he was trying to reach the Spice Islands (which today are called Indonesia).Spices were very scarce and valuable in Europe at this time.No one knew that two vast oceans and the American continents lay between Europe and Asia.Columbus did not find spices in America, but he did bring home some gold trinkets. The American Indians wore these as jewelry.Gold, not spices, was to become the biggest motive for exploration.Expeditions into the interior of the Americas were very costly and very risky.Only by promising the authorities huge profits could sailors and soldiers raise money for their expeditions. They also needed to promise rich rewards in order to get followers and crews. If a leader returned to Europe without gold and jewels, he might end up in jail.No wonder the Spanish conquerors were always searching for gold.At first, the Spaniards stayed around the coasts of the Caribbean Sea, but stories of gold in the interior tempted them to explore inland. They asked the Indians where their gold jewelry came from. The Indians would point further inland. They said that a wealthy people lived in the high mountains that traded gold and emeralds for pearls, cotton and shells. The Spanish Emperor had given the rights to exploit present-day Venezuela and Colombia to his German bankers in 1528.So Germans - Dalfinger, Federmann and Hohermuth - led a series of expeditions into the jungles, grasslands and mountains.Meanwhile, Spanish conquerors had found immense riches in gold and silver.Hernando Cortes had captured the Kingdom of the Aztecs in Mexico in 1519.He had sent immense treasures to Europe.Soon after this, Francesco Pizarro began to explore the west coast of South America. In 1531, Pizarro invaded Peru and destroyed the Kingdom of the Incas.Pizarro melted down the gold and silver treasures of the Incas, and sent gold and silver bricks back to Spain. The rush to find more gold became very heated.Rumors came down from the mountains of Colombia about a golden man - el hombre Dorado. There were stories about a king so rich that he wore gold dust instead of a coat.Colombia was the Kingdom of the Chibchas. They were a trading people who traded salt and emeralds for gold, cotton, pearls, and shells. The actual gold did not come from their kingdom. It was found in the mountain rivers, and brought to the Chibchas for refining and metalwork.Several armies converged on Chibcha territory. The first to arrive was the Spaniard Quesada, coming up the Magdalene River from the Caribbean. He found the chief cities of the Chibchas and seized their gold and emeralds.Shortly afterwards, one of Pizarro's captains arrived from Peru and Ecuador. Then the German Federmann arrived from Venezuela.Quesada gave the latecomers some gold and jewels to ease their disappointment.Quesada's men also found out about the Golden Man.High in the mountains was a lake created by a meteorite. The Indians believes that the 'golden god' from the sky now lived at the bottom of the lake. When a new leader of the tribe was elected, he was covered in grease, and fine gold dust was blown over his body so that he appeared to be made of gold.He was taken out to the middle of the lake on a raft.He would jump into the lake, and stay in the water till the gold dust was washed off.It was considered an offering to the god.Gold ornaments were also tossed in the lake. Then the king and his followers would return to the shore. This ceremony was stopped several generations before the Europeans arrived. Many people were unwilling to believe that this was the whole story. They began to search for a golden city hidden in the jungle. Many explorers perished in this search. In their search for gold, the Spanish conquerors destroyed the great Indian civilizations of America.Towns and villages had been ruined, thousands of people killed and wonderful pieces of art melted down. Some Indians believed that gold must be a food that Europeans desperately needed to stay alive. In many cases, the Europeans destroyed the trading and social systems that had produced their wealth. When we think about the great achievements of a few conquerors and explorers, we are also sad about how much death and damage they caused.

In September 1519, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan set off on a fateful voyage to find a route to the Spice Islands. In the centuries since, Magellan has gone down in history as a chivalric adventurer, his name forever linked to the first circumnavigation of the globe. But, as Professor Felipe Fernández-Armesto tells Ellie Cawthorne, Magellan's career was in fact shaped more by failure than success. So I'm reading along about the Spice Islands and start to wonder - was #Dune just Frank Herbert vibing out in Big University Archives and smoking too many clove ciggies? But seriously, the world really did turn in on itself over the dried plant bits from a couple of islands between India and Australia. (Was it #Aliens? It wasn't Aliens.) But I will explain how the busiest place in the world in the 16th Century was a place that is really hard to get to even now, but has food you really want to try.The show notes will have spice lists in what looks like made-up languages, and a link to a PDF ( https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8102 ) of the Forme of Cury. Also - shoutout to @NYPL for having a bound version of this on display at 5th Ave - I got to see it!)Music Credit: Fingerlympics by Doctor TurtleShow Notes: https://thehistoryofamericanfood.blogspot.com/Email: TheHistoryofAmericanFood@gmail.com Twitter: @THoAFoodInstagram: @THoAFood

Welcome to a particularly delicious romp through the history of the Spice trade with my guest, 'television's own' Wayne Wilderson. His IMDB Credits read like a CVS receipt and you'll find he is as effortless on the microphone as he is on camera. 00:04:55 - After telling you a little bit about where we are (and why I'm wearing my daughter's Hello Kitty Headphones) Wayne tells us a little bit about when he came to Hollywood and some of his favorite jobs... and there have been so many. Among his gigs was a 12-year run as the purple grapes in the Fruit of the Loom campaign. 00:07:52 - Wayne and Dawn get into the HILF. 00:08:51 - Dawn Lays out her sources and research:Book: Spice - The History of a Temptation by Jack Turner. Documentary: Absolute History with Kate Humble - Where Peppercorn and Cinnamon come from. Great Article about Magellan: by Steven Robert Carlson 00:11:10 - The plan for this episode is to cover not only the history of cinnamon and the other spices that originated in the same time and place - but also why humanity has been so intrigued by them for so long. 00:14:40 - Let's fuck.00:16:23 - Columbus sails the ocean blue in search of India  and her elusive spices and accidentally bumps into the Bahamas. He has a bad reputation now, but it wasn't much better in his lifetime on account of the total lack of familiar spices in the 'New World.' 00:20:25 - The Pope, in an effort to cool tensions between Spain and Portugal, divides the world between them. The Treaty of Tordesillas established that everything 'non-christian' discovered West belonged to Spain and everything East belonged to Portugal. And thus began the race to see how far East was West and who - in the end - would claim the Spice Islands.  00:21:20 - The Portuguese sailor, Vasco da Gama sets sail South around the Cape of Good Hope and successfully crosses the Indian ocean to arrive in Calcut, India. It's an extraordinary encounter.00:25:58 - The Portuguese in an effort to establish domination over the islands, leave Francisco Serrao as a representative to await their return. He has a string of wild adventures, eventually becoming BFF's and advisor to an Island sultan. He marries and never returns to Portugal... He does however, write a few letters to a guy named Ferdinand Magellan. 00:23:40 - Magellan sets sail on his history-making journey. The books say he circumnavigated the globe, but the details will reveal he - in fact died in the Philippines - and his exhausted, scurvy-laden crew had to hump one leaking boat back to Spain on their own. But, the Spanish still made a profit on the journey so...00:32:18 - The Dutch arrive in the Spice Islands and after pushing the Portuguese and the English out - prove to be brutal overlords. ...But this is not the beginning of the story. It can't be. There was a love and value placed on Spice that inspired all of this exploration and exploitation. In Part II, we take the road even further up the annals of history to the ancients. PART II00:35:33 - Welcome back!00:36:28 - The first known consumer of spice in history did not eat it.  It was Ramses II and he had it shoved up his nose during his mummification. 00:38:45 - The first known myth about cinnamon predated Ramses II - it is the story of the Phoenix who is is resurrected from its ashes. Ashes that were, in the original legend, mixed with cinnamon. 00:40:00 - The Roman's loved spice too much? It is argued that it at least contributed to the Fall the empire. It was because their growing obsession with exotic spices sent a wave of gold East; while what they got in return was primarily burned, and if eaten, supplied no nutritional value. 00:41:43 - When the later European Christians dominated, they at first rejected spices as a uniquely pagan tradition. In later centuries, however, they embraced them and in much the same way, and with much the same results as the Romans. 00:45:18 - Dawn covers the many varied uses and applications for spices over the centuries. From medicine, to ritual, to sex aide. 00:50:00 - Constantine the Great was a sex expert - he literally wrote the book on it - and there are some gems. 00:52:00 - It turns out, however, our timeless obsession with spice - cinnamon in particular - is justified! Dr. Alan R. Hirsch, director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago has proven it!00:54:00 - The various spices pursued during the The Spice Trade fit nicely with the flawed medical wisdom of the time - that of The 4 Humors. It hinged on the idea that the health of a human being was tied to it's balance among being Hot, Cold, Wet and Dry. They were fairly arbitrary delineations that doctors - with both good and bad intensions - exploited for centuries. 00:56:30 - The end of the age, not too surprisingly, coincided with the beginning of one. The French one-armed thief, Peter Poivre, successfully stole cloves from Indonesia and successfully replanted them in France. It was 1776 and nobody cared anymore. 01:00:30 - One might be tempted to say that we as humanity have moved on from the silly ancient obsession with spices - and yet they are key ingredients in both Coca-cola and the top fragrance, Obsession by Calvin Klein... So have we? Thanks, as ever, for listening! We are enjoying an ever-increasing listenership and are so grateful for your ears... But I have NO IDEA who reads these things so if that is you - please introduce yourself.  There are lots of ways to do it - Instagram, Facebook or Email [hilfpodcast@gmail.com]. Also on our Instagram, you can see daily posts about the current episode - featuring photos, links and additional tid-bits about the people and places I talk about.

Today, I speak with Laurence Bergreen about his book In Search of a Kingdom: Francis Drake, Elizabeth I, and the Perilous Birth of the British Empire. "Before he was secretly dispatched by Queen Elizabeth to circumnavigate the globe, or was called upon to save England from the Spanish Armada, Francis Drake was perhaps the most wanted—and successful—pirate ever to sail. Nicknamed “El Draque” by the Spaniards who placed a bounty on his head, the notorious red-haired, hot-tempered Drake pillaged galleons laden with New World gold and silver, stealing a vast fortune for his queen—and himself. For Elizabeth, Drake made the impossible real, serving as a crucial and brilliantly adaptable instrument of her ambitions to transform England from a third-rate island kingdom into a global imperial power. In 1580, sailing on Elizabeth's covert orders, Drake became the first captain to circumnavigate the earth successfully. (Ferdinand Magellan had died in his attempt.) Part exploring expedition, part raiding mission, Drake's audacious around-the-world journey in the Golden Hind reached Patagonia, the Pacific Coast of present-day California and Oregon, the Spice Islands, Java, and Africa. Almost a decade later, Elizabeth called upon Drake again. As the devil-may-care vice admiral of the English fleet, Drake dramatically defeated the once-invincible Spanish Armada, spurring the British Empire's ascent and permanently wounding its greatest rival.  The relationship between Drake and Elizabeth is the missing link in our understanding of the rise of the British Empire, and its importance has not been fully described or appreciated. Framed around Drake's key voyages as a window into this crucial moment in British history, In Search of a Kingdom is a rousing adventure narrative entwining epic historical themes with intimate passions." Laurence Bergreen is the bestselling author of Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe. His other books include Columbus: The Four Voyages, 1492–1504; Marco Polo: From Venice to Xanadu; and Voyage to Mars: NASA's Search for Life Beyond Earth. Christopher Columbus, the man who is commonly known as the one who discovered America and sailed the ocean blue. Before recent events, there were statues across the United States and the world in honor of discovering America and paving the path to European colonization. When you judge this book by its cover, it looks like he has been rightfully honored for the courageous voyages he underwent. But as soon as you open that book, you may realize why his statues were toppled and beheaded around the world. A brilliant man and talented cartographer and navigator, he was also an egotistical leader that was obsessed with his own fame and stature, Christopher Columbus set out with the intent to find a new route to India, China, Japan and the Spice Islands, and mistakenly wound up in the Caribbean only to begin the genocide of the indigenous people. The picture of Christopher Columbus that we were painted in the public school system here in the States, was a partially false painting, and today we are here to lay it all out on the table for you.Intro/Outro beat created by Stafford Beatshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6gQJFh6xb_KNKG6NNnKDpA
