It's been a good few months since our last 'Making Her Runner' episode but we are excited to be back sharing in Leah's running journey over the last year. A journey that started with low energy availability prior to Cape Town Marathon in 2023 along with hormonal issues and ended in a completely different runner crossing the finish line of the Karkloof 20 Mile Trail race this past weekend. Through her personal journey we will look to share insights and knowledge behind some of the tough decisions that had to be made, the setbacks in the running goals to prioritise her health goals and how one can go about implementing these changes to help you find your healthy running mojo. In this conversation we chat in particular about how nutrition was at the core of the issue and also at the core of the healing process. We go into practical advice for listeners to adopt and how becoming a more mindful eater can have a huge effect on your ability to perform and enjoy your running journey. There is always something to be learned through the stories shared by others and this is no exception. We hope that you find the conversation insightful and if you can resonate with some of the issues Leah was struggling with, we hope that you can also figure out a way to put your health first - your running will definitely thank you for it in the long run. "The Cape Town Marathon returns next month (17 October), and its ambassador and 1992 Olympian silver medalist Elana Meyer has more on how its going to be staged with a reduced field. She shares also how the virtual race will be incorporated into the main race. ”
Entries for the Cape Town Marathon are open and the race will go ahead despite other big races cancelled because of covid-19. Guest: Cape Town Marathon Race Director Renee Jordaan
Today we are fortunate to chat to Renee Jordaan. Renee is the Race Director Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and the Co-Founder and Director at Game On Event Solutions. She is also the Former Operations Director at Cape Town Cycle Tour and Former Race Director at Comrades Marathon. In addition to this, she loves all things running and cycling. Renee Questions:1. As we said in your introduction, you were the Race Director for the Comrades Marathon and the Operations Director for the Cape Town Cycle Tour before starting your own business Game on Event Solutions. There are so many logistical challenges in organising these big events. What are the biggest challenges in making sure everything is seamless on race day?2. How long in advance does the planning start for these big races? (if not answered in #1).3. The Cape Town marathon is the country’s premiere standard marathon and has achieved gold label status for the last 4 years by World Athletics. Because of Covid-19, you decided to take the marathon online in 2020. You are offering a virtual race with various distances. You are also introducing a Cape Town marathon 3D audio app. Explain to us how the virtual race will work on the day and the use of the app.4. The app is something that nobody else has done before. What inspired you to create this amazing app.5. There are elites who run the race yearly but may not be able to come to South Africa. Is this open to them? Can they race in this virtual sphere?6. The Sanlam Cape Town marathon race organisers has really been forward thinking in their planning. Tell us about the refreshment stations that will be available.7. Why did you decide to introduce the 21k distance, because that distance is not available for the physical race?8. Are you going to run the race?9. For those athletes who have already entered the actual race (before the virtual race was announced), what is the status of their entry for those runners? 10. Can the race be run on a treadmill?11. Does the race start at a certain time?12. Are there cut-off times?13. When do entries close? This is truly a virtual race like no other. Embracing cutting technology with the passion and love for running. With the help of the app, runners all over the continent will feel as if they are in Cape Town. They will hear the sounds, see Table Mountain and Cape town stadium in their minds eye. The result will be an immersive experience for local and international athletes whose individual races will be tracked and displayed in real time, coupled with their virtual progress on the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon route. We are proud to call this OUR marathon.

This week on the podcast I chat with Brad Brown about his most recent Ironman Finish. He just finished Ironman South Africa which was his 5th Ironman finish. Brad Brown like myself is a host of a podcast. His podcast is called The Kona Edge. He is a sports journalist in the beautiful country of South Africa. He started his journey to endurance sports with an attempt at the very famous Comrades Marathon in 2010. But before he could give that a go he had to lose some weight. He tells the story of his journey losing 1/3 of his body weight and the trip to the start and the finish of Comrades Marathon and then also Ironman South Africa. Brad talks about how he found his way to triathlon by adding cross training to his run training. We chat about how he got from racing Ironman and running to podcasting. The only way to get onto the Kona Edge is to make it to the world championships in Kona. Which has got to be one of the most stringent criteria for being a podcast guest out there. This is Brad's 5th Ironman but like many people he battled an injury during training and he did not have the training build up he had hoped for. We talk all about the Ironman South Africa course and the weather conditions in Port Elizabeth. Brad tells the story of his race at Ironman South Africa 2016. We talk about walking an Ironman marathon. We talk about racing with family. He's raced with both his brother and his father. I learned that in South Africa they call jelly fish blue bottles which is a much prettier name than Portuguese Man o' War like we call them in the States. We talk about battling through dark spots during the race and the amazing energy of an Ironman Finish Line. We talk about his favorite part of the Ironman South Africa course. We talk about the event that may or may not have happened with pro Triathlete Jodi Swallow and a television helicopter that may have knocked her off her bike. Brad and I speak about how to stay motivated when training for Ironman year after year. He gives some good advice and it's worth a listen. We do some chatting about the dream of going to the Ironman World Championships in Kona. Brad is going to be running the Cape Town Marathon. And the Ultra Trail Cape Town. He's also got 2 Oceans and Ironman South Africa, JoBerg to Sea and Comrades marathon again. He is also putting together an online summit about all things Ironman. Check it out at www.theimsummit.com ( I've already signed up).
TalkFEED — What does it take to run a marathon in under 3 hours? For many of us just finishing a marathon is an incredible achievement, running a sub 3 hour marathon is a super human achievement. South African TV and sporting personality Arnold Geerdts has run 63 sub 3 hour marathons. That is not a typo. Sixty three sub three hour marathons, stretching over 4 decades. Less than 40 people have run sub 3 hour marathons in 5 decades and Arnie is on a mission to become the first South African to achieve that incredible feat. That means running a marathon in under 3 hours in the 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. He came perilously close to doing it at the Boston Marathon this year as well as the Cape Town Marathon. He is however training for another onslaught early in 2015. Read more

TalkFEED — A month ago Irvette van Zyl won the Totalsports Women’s Race in Stellenbosch in a time of 32:50. It equalled Zola Budd’s personal best as the third fastest 10km performances by South African women on the road. Budd ran that time at the age of 17 in Bloemfontein in August 1983. That time still stands as the South African junior record. The only two women to run faster over that distance are former half-marathon world record holder Elana Meyer and Colleen de Reuck. This week on Run Talk SA we chat to Irvette about that fantastic run in the Western Cape as well as her recent victory at the Mandela Marathon in Pietermaritzburg. We also chat about the upcoming Cape Town Marathon and what she hopes to achieve as well as what it is like being married to South African track star LJ van Zyl and whether or not she has any Comrades Marathon aspirations. Also as mentioned in the podcast, be sure to register for our upcoming Comrades Marathon webinar.
