Sebastian Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha both going sub-2 at the 2026 London Marathon. John Korir breaking the Boston course record. Performances that would have seemed impossible a decade ago are suddenly the new normal — and they're reshaping how everyone below the elite tier trains, too.In this episode, host Aditi Pandya sits down with Satish and Vijay to ask the question those races force: have the rules of marathon training actually changed? Together they unpack how the sport has moved from a “survival strategy” to an “attacking strategy” — and how amateur athletes are now living, training, and thinking like elites. What's covered in this episode:The super shoe era: how carbon-plated shoes have shaved minutes off world records, and how they've changed the way runners recover — minimising the injury patterns seen with early models.Democratisation of information: the internet, AI tools, and local role models behind the surge of amateur sub-3 marathoners.High mileage & the Norwegian method: the shift toward higher weekly volumes (often 100km+ for serious amateurs) and the rise of double-threshold training for race-day strength.Recovery as a priority: why sleep and simple nutrition are still king, and where saunas, Normatec boots, and magnesium fit in.The 100g+ carb revolution: training the gut to handle 100–115g of carbs per hour via gels and drink mixes, and pre-loading 48–72 hours before a race.Cutting-edge supplements: what serious runners are actually testing — sodium bicarbonate, beta-alanine, creatine, and a Swedish broccoli-based supplement called Nomio.Rapid-fire training advice: why consistency beats “magic workouts”, why the 32km marathon-pace block is overrated, and why post-run strides and hill sprints remain underrated.Host: Aditi PandyaAditi is a seasoned endurance runner and the host of The World of Running podcast. Every sport has had its watershed moment when a new technology upends the landscape and redefines what's possible. Baseball had torpedo bats, swimming the Lazer swimsuits, road cycling the introduction of aerodynamic carbon frames and in running we are living through an era defined by what were first, and best, described as “super shoes.”  For the last decade, the shoe industry has gone into overdrive to create shoes capable of blending impossible lightness with unbelievable energy return. The holy grail sought by shoe designers in this footwear arms race: crafting the pair of shoes that would propel the first man in history to a sub 2-hour marathon performance.  As of Sunday, we are now officially living in the new sub-2 era, as not one, but two men, Kenya's Sabastian Sawe and Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha, tore down the two-hour marathon barrier at last weekend's London Marathon.  While every factor imaginable aligned perfectly for these two men to take the sport somewhere no one has gone before, one factor in particular has drawn the lion's share of attention: the shoes. Both Sawe and Kejelcha ran in the just-released adidas Adios Pro Evo 3, a shoe touted as the lightest, fastest super shoe ever created. This week on The Shakeout Podcast we're diving into what makes these super shoes so super, and what physiological factors they impact that have helped runners achieve times long-thought impossible. To make sense of it all is Olympian and Mayo Clinic exercise physiologist Dr. Shalaya Kipp, a leading thinker in the science of shoe innovation. As one of the first researchers to quantify the running economy-improving benefits of super shoes, Shalaya reveals to us what specific factors are at play in these record-breaking shoes, how our bodies respond to these factors over the marathon distance and why runners of lesser ability might actually benefit the most from this new era of shoe tech.  Subscribe to The Shakeout Podcast feed on Apple, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you find your podcasts. Much of the conversation around these performances were centered around innovations in shoe technology, carbohydrate fueling strategies, and doping suspicion.    Episode Sponsors: ProBio: probionutrition.com/endurance Code: Endurance (20% Off) LMNT: drinkLMNT.com/HPO (free sample pack with purchase) deltaG: deltagketones.com Code: BITTER20 (20% Off)   Podcast Details: Support HPO: zachbitter.com/hposponsors HPO Website: zachbitter.com/hpo  Zach's Coaching: zachbitter.com/coaching Zach's Journal: substack.com/@zachbitter Find Zach: zachbitter.com | IG: @zachbitter | X: @zbitter | FB: Zach Bitter | Strava: Zach Bitter

In this episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, Letty and Ryan break down the historic sub-2 hour breakthrough in London and, more importantly, how you can apply those same elite strategies to your own training. We translate the performances of Sabastian Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha into actionable "Middle-of-the-Pack" mechanics to help you become a faster, more efficient runner. We discuss the specific "how-to" steps behind these world records:Mastering the Negative Split: Why Sabastian Sawe's 59:01 second half proves that "banking time" early is a trap that depletes your glycogen 30% faster. The Bicarb Blueprint: How the new "Bicarb System" technology manages muscle acidity (the "burn") and how amateur runners can benefit from high-pH buffering. Aggressive Fueling: Why the 120g/hour carb standard is the new benchmark and how to "train your gut" to handle more fuel without GI distress. Mental Drafting & Stretch Goals: How to use "London energy" to reframe your psychological limits and use pace groups to handle the "mental math" of racing. If you've been stuck at the same marathon time for years, this episode is your guide to reframing what your body is actually capable of achieving. We move past the flashy headlines to give you the technical gear, fueling, and pacing tips used by the fastest humans on Earth. We are launching a brand-new Thursday segment: "Your Story, Your Why". We are moving beyond the elite news to share the relatable stories of everyday runners in our community. Want to be featured? Email Letty at letty@marathonjournal.com. For all of my life it has been a mythic barrier. For all your life it has been a mythic barrier. In the same way we cannot fly... In the same way we cannot leap over buildings... many thought it simply impossible. Physiologically, there simply has to be a limit. Was this it? Or, with the perfect conditions, the perfect new nutrition, the perfect shoes, and the perfect athlete, would someone do it? Would a human-being run a competitive marathon and the break the two-hour barrier? There is good reason that in all sporting competitions, the sub-2 has stood as such a seductive record. Running is as primal as sporting competition gets. True caveman stuff. There is no sport with a lower barrier to entry. It's not like lacrosse or ice hockey or cricket, anyone who is physically able to put one leg before the other can theoretically compete. Before this week's London marathon, an Ethiopian runner called Yomif Kejelcha was asked by reporters what kind of time he wanted to run. He was an elite and experienced middle-distance runner, but he'd never run a competitive marathon in his life. He knew he'd be fast. He figured he'd try and stick with the front group. But that was where his ambition ended. The rest, of course is history. At the start of the race, the world marathon record was two hours and 35 seconds. Fluid, graceful, strong, Yomif Kejelcha didn't just beat the time. He didn't scrape in by a second or two. He ran the course a full 54 seconds faster. Extraordinary. And yet, he didn't win. Between the first-ever race over an official marathon distance in London in 1908, and the first ever sub-2-hour time, it took 42,979 days or 3,713,385,600 seconds. For the second sub-2-hour time, it took eleven. Having run a time that for many was unthinkable just two hours earlier, having paced the vast majority of the course with the London Marathon defending champion, Yomif Kejelcha ran across the finish line eleven seconds later. The fastest debut in marathon history. A time that would've shattered the world record. And yet only good enough for silver. Sometimes proving yourself wrong, still means losing the race. Despite it all, Yomif seemed positively philosophical. “I'm not upset. I'm not angry. I'm very, very happy because I broke two hours.” he said. But it was a striking response from a competitor condemned to the history books as the Buzz Aldrin of marathon running. I cannot say I would have been so gracious. And there, I think, is the lesson for all of us about the benchmarks against which we compare ourselves. In what appeared from the outside to be the ultimate moment of sporting cruelty, Yomif Kejelcha chose to compare himself to the clock not the man. And at the end of the day, of the two of us, he's the one running a sub-2. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Presentatie: Robert Denneman

Sabastian Sawe ran 1:59:30 at the London Marathon to become the first person to officially break two hours, with Yomif Kejelcha running 1:59:41 in his marathon debut to become the second. The top three all broke Kelvin Kiptum's previous world record of 2:00:25. On the women's side, Tigist Assefa defended her title in a women's-only world record of 2:15:41. Meanwhile in Toledo, Ohio, unsponsored 25-year-old Vincent Mauri shocked the running world with a 2:05:54 solo effort at the Glass City Marathon, making him the fourth-fastest American ever on a record-eligible course. The crew also breaks down Penn Relays drama, Cheptegei's marathon struggles, and whether Kipchoge's exhibition stole Sawe's thunder.

"It feels like a goal that's within my grasp of achieving. Not only am I stronger and smarter than I was last year, but I feel like I've come a long way and will be able to attack this race with a lot more confidence to chase the world record. When I went (to Millrose) for the first time, I was just chasing the American record. So I feel like changing that mindset, just seeing how far I've come, it feels like a very real possibility at this point." U.S. outdoor mile record holder Yared Nuguse will return to the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City for the 116th Millrose Games to defend his men's Wanamaker Mile title. Last year, Nuguse made his Millrose Games debut and won and set a U.S. indoor mile record of 3:47.38. He barely missed the world record of 3:47.01 set by Yomif Kejelcha in 2019. Nuguse put together a career year in 2023 with a 7:28.23 for 3000m indoors (American record); a personal best of 3:29.02 for 1500m (the fastest performance by an American-born runner); 3:43.97 outdoor mile (an American record and the fourth-fastest performance in history; a victory at the London Diamond League 1500m and a fifth place finish in the 1500m final at the World Championships. Most recently, he ran 3:56.58 at the Merrie Mile in Honolulu to come just .45 seconds shy of breaking the road mile world record. The Millrose Games is the sixth stop on the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold calendar. Livestream and television broadcast details will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more Millrose Games athlete announcements as the pro fields come together. Tickets to the 116th Millrose Games can be purchased online at millrosegames.org. Rob Napolitano joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast after pacing Yomif Kejelcha at the Millrose Games to a 3:48.46 mile. Kejelcha fell 0.008 seconds short of breaking the 3:48.45 record set by Hicham El Guerrouj in 1997 in Ghent, Belgium. Napolitano was tasked with going through 440 yards in 56, 880 yards in 1:53 and 1,000 meters in 2:20. After about 800 meters, Kejelcha took over and ran the rest of the race on his own. We dive into those four laps of work by Rob and what the 24 hours were like that led up to an important pacing job. We also dive into how he became a professional runner with the New Jersey-New York Track Club and making the most out of an opportunity presented by coach Frank Gagliano. The conversation also hits on life as a rookie runner in Europe and how professionals try to make money in those races. It's a fun an interesting conversation that you'll enjoy. --------- Kemoy Campbell Recovery GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/67e5h-kemoy-campbell-support-fund?member=1678178
