Earlier this week I shared a conversation with New Balance Boston Coach Mark Coogan. He is truly one of distance running's great sages. His team includes current lions of our sport like Elle St. Pierre, Heather MacLean, and recent addition Parker Valby. Mark shares tales from New England's rich running tradition and his own elite career on the track, grass, and roads. We also unpack specific workouts that have yielded his athletes Olympic appearances and World Championships medals. But more importantly, we hear about his overarching training principles, which, I believe, can help guide all of us to greater success and joy in our running.
It's officially that time again: The spreadsheets are out and the ranking formulas are loaded. Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia have returned with the kind of number crunching that would make a tax accountant blush.Yes — we're talking about The Ten, and more broadly, the increasingly anxiety-inducing state of the 10,000 meters heading into the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.Because apparently World Athletics took one look at the event and said, ‘What if we made this harder, more confusing, and fully dependent on vibes, shoe tech, and whether your country's federation knows how to read the rankings page?'So here we are. The women's standard dropped to a vicious 30:20.00. The men's remains at a world-class 27:00.00. And unless you're from Kenya or Ethiopia—or somehow running 10Ks on the road in super shoes fast enough to melt tarmac—you're probably counting on the whims of the World Rankings gods to punch your ticket to Tokyo. In the U.S., Weini Kelati is still the queen of consistency. Parker Valby and Karissa Schweizer skipped The Ten entirely. Elise Cranny has re-entered the picture and Jessica McClain quietly garnered some valuable points by PR'ing by half a minute. On the men's side, it's a little simpler: Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Graham Blanks, and Woody Kincaid are qualified. All they have to do is battle at USAs.There's still time. A 10K at Mt. SAC is coming. Maybe Pre will host a last-minute 10K. So let's break down who's up, who's down, who's close and who's hoping UK Athletics doesn't screw them over again.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Preet Majithia | @preetmajithia on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. “The really great athletes – they all have a superpower. [It's about] what makes them uniquely excellent and helping them understand what their superpower is and how they wave that sword around…You may not have laser vision, but you can fly. How do you use your ability to fly and max that out?”In just two years, Will Palmer has overseen quite a bit of success for the Florida Gators distance program. In 2023, as the associate head coach for cross country and assistant track and field coach, Palmer led the Gators' women to their highest national ranking since 2009, an SEC championship, and a second place finish at the NCAA East Regionals. In addition to all of that, he and his wife Samantha were the coaches behind Parker Valby's record-breaking dominance, guiding her to NCAA titles, collegiate records, and her first Olympic team. Before arriving in Gainesville, Palmer made an impact at Alabama, helping the women's team to an SEC title and a podium finish at the NCAA Championships in 2022. His coaching career also includes stops at Georgetown, Western Kentucky, Iowa State, and Oklahoma, shaping some of the best distance programs in the country. So today we dive into the vision behind Florida's rise in cross country, what made Parker Valby's training and mindset so unique to be part of, his coaching philosophy, and what he's building in Gainesville – plus lessons from a career spent developing talent and much more.If you've been enjoying these office hours episodes, shoot me a message with other coaches that you'd like to hear from. "There are so many ways to get to the start line. There is not one way to do it. You just have to find what works best for you." Parker Valby was a collegiate phenom. At the University of Florida, Parker set multiple collegiate records in the 5000m and the 10,000m. She earned six NCAA and SEC titles, including five NCAA titles in one year alone. She wrapped up her career as a Gator by competing at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team Trials, earning a spot on Team USA, and competing at the Paris Olympics, where she finished 11th in the 10,000m final and was the youngest runner in the top 15. Now, 22-year-old Parker has officially gone pro. She signed with New Balance and joined Team New Balance Boston, where she trains alongside teammates — and fellow Olympians — including Elle Purrier St. Pierre, Heather MacLean, and Emily Mackay. Today on the podcast is one of the most successful coaches in our sport, Mark Coogan. Coach Coogan has had an illustrious career as both a runner, coach, and parent, and is currently leading the New Balance team–an elite distance running crew that began in 2014. (Notable stars on the team include Elle St. Pierre and Parker Valby).Coach Coogan's personal running journey started at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Massachusetts. He then went on to run at the University of Maryland, where he specialized in the steeplechase. Coogan has the distinction of being the first Massachusetts native to run the mile in under four minutes.Coach Coogan played basketball in high school–he was even skilled enough to receive scholarship offers to play basketball from some lower-level schools. He has PRs of 3:58.81 in the mile, 8:21.45 in the 2 mile, 8:26.90 in the 3,000m steeplechase, 13:23.72 in the 5k, and 28:19.07 in the 10k. Coach Coogan's post-collegiate running career showcased incredible range (1988-2004): He ranked in the top 10 in the United States in the mile, steeplechase, 5k, 10k, and marathon during his career. He ran his marathon PR in the U.S. Olympic trials leading up to the 1996 games, where he ran a 2:13.05. (He ran 2:20.27 at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, placing 41st). He retired from competitive running in 2004, and turned his focus to coaching. Coogan has spent time as the distance coach at Dartmouth College, Tufts University, MIT, and Phillips Exeter Academy. Coach Coogan and his wife Gwyn (who ran the 10k at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics) have three children: daughter Katrina, who is a professional runner for New Balance Boston; Margaret, who runs for George Washington University; and son, William, who runs for UNC. Coach Coogan's book, Personal Best Running: Coach Coogan's Strategies for the Mile to the Marathon, was released in 2023.In today's conversation, Mark takes me through his years as a successful athlete and coach. We dive into insights from coaching Elle St. Pierre and Parker Valby and his philosophies around training. Tap into the Mark Coogan Special. “Once I made the Olympic team, it was kind of like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I finally accomplished that goal. This is weird to say, but I feel like there was a lot less pressure on me for the Olympics than any NCAA race. At NCAA races, I was expected to win. But at the Olympics, they're like, ‘She's here!'”My guest for today's episode isParker Valby. This is her third time on the show. Over the past year, she rewrote the NCAA record books, becoming the first woman in history to win 5 individual NCAA titles in a single academic year. It earned her the prestigious Bowerman Award. Her undefeated season included a record-breaking performance at every championship level from cross country to indoor to outdoor. She shattered the collegiate 10,000m record by 28 seconds, ran a historic 14:52 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and capped it all off with a runner-up finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials to qualify for her first Olympic team. Then she took 11th at the Paris Olympics. Now she's taking her talents to the professional stage with Team New Balance Boston under the guidance of Mark Coogan. She's navigating a new training environment with tougher competition and adjusting from being dominant in the NCAA to now trying to contend on the global stage. In this conversation, we talk about her transition to the pro ranks, her unique training approach that still prioritizes cross-training, and what she hopes to achieve in her first season as a pro.We also get into her Olympic experience and recap her professional debut at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix where she ran 8:34 for a personal best and third place finish against a very strong women's 3000m field.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Parker Valby |@parkervalby on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Today on AtoZrunning: We discuss best post-race practices, some of which you'll like, and some you won't! Parker Valby finally signed a pro deal. What took so long? We reached deep into the BELIEVE BAG before this great episode! It started out with all of our thoughts ahead of the Javelina 100 Miler this weekend. This journey into the unknown has it all: fears, dread, and doubt right alongside excitement, celebration, and DMX. We hope this exploration gives you a tailwind that pushes you to chase scary dreams. We also did a deep dive into a massive new meta-regression study on mitochondria and capillary development. The study gathered data from hundreds of previous studies to come to big conclusions about how the body adapts over time. And this one was full of fun topics! Other topics: shoe choice for the race, how mindset evolves on race week, a new article on Norwegian heat training that delves into how to prepare for hot races, how that may improve performance in cooler conditions, Parker Valby's game-changing contract with New Balance, what that contract means for the sport and lessons for negotiation generally, how long-term training impacts physiology, the Secretary of the Interior running an ultra, how higher caffeine totals may impact sleep even 12 hours before bedtime, carb burning at low intensities, and a beautiful listener corner message about crusty hearts. During the 2024 indoor season, Coach Palmer coached Parker Valby to two NCAA Individual Championships (3000m & 5000m). Valby's 5000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships not only earned her first place but was a new collegiate record (breaking her own set earlier the same season), meet record, facility record, school record, and personal record.Coach Palmer also coached Flomena Asekol to an NCAA Indoor Championship appearance. Coach Palmer comes to Florida from Alabama where he spent the last five years working with the distance runners. While at Alabama, he helped coach the Crimson Tide Women's cross country team to the 2022 SEC Cross Country Team Championship and a third place finish at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Prior to his time at Alabama, Palmer spent time at Georgetown (2016-18), Western Kentucky (2015-16), Iowa State (2013-15), and two years as the operations director for the track & field and cross country teams at Oklahoma (2011-13). Whittni Morgan had a little bit of delayed gratification as she was named to the U.S. Olympic team in the 5000m about a week after the Trials. So how did it happen? Elle St. Pierre won the 5000m and finished third in the 1500m but has decided to only run the 1500m at the Paris Olympics. This elevated Parker Valby into that final spot for the 5000m after her fourth place finish in the Olympic Trials final. Valby also finished second in the 10,000m. After a few days of consideration and conversation with her coaches Will Palmer and Samantha Palmer, she decided to just run the 10,000 meters at the Paris Olympics. She qualified for that event based off her World Ranking. This meant that Whittni Morgan, who finished fifth in the 5000m final, got the final spot for Paris. In this episode, we chat about what it was like to get that call. Plus, we talk through just how incredible her comeback has been in the past seven months. She underwent patellar tendon surgery in December and did not run on the ground until early February. She ran her season's best of 15:06 in the Olympic Trials final. Plus, we chat about what it's been like to be on this journey with coach Diljeet Taylor for the past few years. SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

A fitting theme for the penultimate day of competition at the 2024 Olympic Trials: it ain't over ‘til it's over. Just ask Monae' Nichols, who sat in fourth place in the final of the long jump competition. Nichols has a 6.97m personal best from 2022, but heading into Trials she was one centimeter shy of the Olympic qualifying standard with a 6.85m season's best. In her last jump of the competition, Nichols came up clutch in multiple ways, jumping her way from 5th into 3rd and improving her season's best to the 6.86m auto-qualifier. The long jump was full of drama, with eventual champion Tara Davis-Woodhall needing a mark in the third round just to keep jumping and eventually pulling out a 7.00m leap in the fifth round to defend her national title. And three different women held the third position in the final round of competition, with Lex Brown starting the round in third at 6.77m, then Quanesha Burks landing a 6.80m jump, and finally Nichols taking the critical final spot with her final effort. There's plenty of discourse around what role field events should play in the sport, and the women's long jump final was a perfect example of why the stakes, drama, and rivalries of the field half of the sport deserve a bigger spotlight. At the top of the ticket, the 200m finals went largely according to form with Gabby Thomas and Noah Lyles defending their U.S. titles in speedy times — 21.81 and 19.53. Both Thomas and Lyles finished third in Tokyo but head into Paris the favorite for gold. Behind Thomas, however, was a wild ride as #2 seed Sha'Carri Richardson was bested by 2019 World silver medalist Brittany Brown and NCAA champion McKenzie Long. Brown is an incredible gamer, making the team with a lifetime best of 21.90, and Long bounced back well after missing the final in the 100m. The 10,000m drama isn't just late-breaking; it may continue after the Trials end as Trials champ Weini Kelati secured her spot but 2nd- and 3rd-placers Parker Valby and Karissa Schweizer will have to await the final world rankings to know if they have a spot on the Olympic starting line. In the women's shot put, Tokyo silver medalist Raven Saunders set their third season's best in the competition after improving from 19.17m to 19.54m in the qualifying round, throwing 19.88m in the first round of the final and 19.90m on the last throw to finish 2nd and secure another spot on Team USA. Trials champ (and 2x World champ) Chase Jackson took home another U.S. title, but it also took her a little extra time and effort as she sat in fourth place halfway through the competition and only secured her Olympic spot with a 20.10m throw in the fourth round. Even when the eventual outcome is the top seed comes out victorious, a lot of anxiety, drama, and excitement can emerge along the way. The beauty of watching any track and field competition from start to finish is being able to take the roller coaster ride along with the athletes, and to feel the rush they feel when the script gets flipped in the final moments. [Can YOU say NACAC five times fast?] Then, you hear what Des and Kara thought of the 100m finals (we see you Sha'Carri, Noah, and Fred!), Noah Lyle's kit reveal, and the 16-year-old sprint phenom Quincy Wilson who might just make a relay team in Paris. We put on some bouncy shoes for optimal energy return before this great episode! The main training discussion was a new study on a speed protocol that caused major improvements in high-level runners. We zoom out to discuss other studies that have similar findings, including one that provided a theory for mechanisms in slow-twitch muscle fibers. There is one thing almost every endurance athlete should be doing--short speed/hill repeats under 30 seconds. It's wild how simple it can be! Before that, we got to share amazing news: we just got our hands on a trail supershoe that seems to channel the tech that changed the game in road running. The Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra is soft underfoot and built-up like its road counterparts, and it'll feel familiar to anyone who has had the silky smooth feeling of going fast in the new generation of shoes. We have some gripes (what is up with that sizing? Are they stable/durable?), but mostly we are excited about what it might mean for the future once this tech approach trickles down across the sport, including to training shoes. And this episode was full of amazing topics! Other topics: matching outfits, the fun of track coaching, why trail shoes are lagging behind, what the future might hold for shoes based on the timeline from roads, running economy improvements after speed-based interventions, how to incorporate strides into a training plan, "delivering the message" in ultras, On sponsoring Zendaya, Allie Ostrander's win at the Portland Track Festival and why we think it's one of the best stories in sports, Shane Cohen's breakthrough win at the NCAA Champs, Parker Valby's dominance (and shoe craftsmanship), an AI song from a listener (plus other AI thoughts), a study on potential mitochondria-based changes from sodium bicarbonate, and hot takes. We just wrapped up a jam-packed weekend with track and field taking place in Eugene with the NCAA Championships, Portland for the Portland Track Festival, Rome for the European Championships and New York City for the NYC Grand Prix. NYC GRAND PRIX Lots of action to recap including Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone giving the 400m American record a scare; Noah Lyles clocked a 19.77 into the wind, Eric Holt goes viral after taking 2022 world champion Jake Wightman to the line in the 1500m, Elaine Thompson Herah may be seriously injured after pulling up after the 100m. But the biggest story was 2022 World champion Fred Kerley and his sponsor Asics decided to part ways. Kerley came out onto the track wearing a competitor's product. Kerley did not end up racing after slipping in the blocks twice. He was not disqualified but elected not to race. It's that time of year for the Gators, when Florida's Olympic sports seize center stage. Parker Valby put on a show in the 5,000 at SEC track and field championships, lacrosse is Final Four bound, men's golf pushes to defend its 2023 national title and softball is poised for another deep postseason run. Baseball is the only struggling spring sport, but Jac Caglianone is giving fans something to celebrate. After a long hiatus, Mark and Edgar return to discuss it all, along with a little football and hoops, during a robust edition of Swamp Things. The 128th Boston Marathon is in the books and Sisay Lemma put on an exhibition the first 20 miles of the race and held on for the win as Hellen Obiri blasted the final 5 miles to win her battle with Sharon Lokedi. CJ Albertson joined the sub 2:10 club. What's up with the Kenyan and Ethiopian Olympic teams? Alicia Monson is out of the Olympics, what about Parker Valby's chances? Colin Sahlman ran 3:33.9 to get the big win at Bryan Clay. Is he a contender for the Olympics? Adam Spencer won the Aussie 1500m title, Jacious Sears blasted a 10.77, Mykolas Alekna broke the oldest men's world record on the books, and the Diamond League is really dead in the US as it will be on Flotrack in 2025. We got extremely hyped watching the Boston Marathon before recording this amazing episode! The main training topic was a new study connecting carb intake during exercise to reduced central fatigue, leading to the researchers theorizing a link between "excess" carbs and improved neuromuscular function. The study protocol was weird and wild! Does this mean we should consume mid-podcast gels to improve joke performance? We promise to edit out the slurps. We also answered an incredible question on balancing a focus on the process with the competitive fire to race at the limits. The answer gets to the core of why we think athletics can be such a powerful stimulus for personal growth. And this episode was one of our most fun recordings ever, full of fascinating topics! Other topics: Megan reaching the taper for the Canyons 100k, the USA Olympic jersey scandal, updates from David's crash, the perils of dictation apps, 6 instant reactions from the Boston Marathon, an intriguing study on ketones and cognitive performance, Parker Valby's cross training schedule and what it means for training theory, mental health and performance, and more controversies in track. Megan even made what she called a "David statement" (definition: excessively bold and likely wrong), which is how you know this one gets spicy. We love you all! Huzzah! "The space between; The tears we cry; Is the laughter that keeps us coming back for more." - Dave Mathews Band The episode is a tribute to the spaces between and most certainly the laughter that comes with them... the space between the indoor season and outdoor championships, between the Olympic Marathon Trials and the Boston Marathon, between your connections at the airport, and between the finish line and that much-needed, post-race bathroom break (+ maybe at least a few more spaces between). Kara gives us a life update and let's us know why things have been a little more stressful recently. Des takes us through her top 10 result at the NYC Half, including some "rock-tumbling" bathroom issues that show us that Des is just like us. They then talk about results from the NCAA Indoor Champs (hello Nico Young and Parker Valby!) and The Ten with a little coaching advice for what to do next for at least a few athletes. In the end, Des poses questions about the 10,000 and about air travel that will make you think, just before the episode leaves you dangling with a Top 3 instead of a Top 5. Listen until the end for a hidden game in this week's episode!
In this podcast, George Hirsch and Amby Burfoot talk with Clayton Young, who recently finished second in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando, Florida. Since Young had run a sensational 2:08:00 in last fall's Chicago Marathon, he is now fully qualified for this summer's Olympic Marathon in Paris. In the Marathon Trials, Young gained a lot of attention for the pair of shades he elected to wear all weekend, and also for his innovative use of a fluids bottle within a metallic bottle that also provided refreshingly-cool caps en route. In the last several miles, he looked better than his training partner Conner Mantz. Indeed Young several times swerved close to the cheering crowds to egg them on, and to see if he could find an American flag to carry to the finish. Yet in the final yards, he let Mantz edge ahead of him to break the tape. In this interview, Young admits that he could have won the race if he wanted, and that he later agonized for a short time over his decision. He wondered if he had made a mistake. In the end, he says, the "joy of the moment" was more important than winning the marathon. Before speaking with Young, George and Amby discuss some important recent news stories including: George's trip to the Barcelona Marathon, the great double wins by Parker Valby and Nico Young in the NCAA indoor championships, and Camile Herron's world-record-setting 6-day race in California during which she covered 560 miles. After the interview, George noted the growing list of successful marathon runners from Brigham Young University. He was struck that "the runners have a deep appreciation for each other, and for everyone else who contributes. They've built something special that combines the best of team, family, and community ... and it's really powerful." Amby was impressed with Young's self-confessed "runner nerdiness," and tried to convince him to wear a bro-bra in Paris--one filled with energy gels and ice packs.6 To keep up with Clayton Young, you can follow him on Instagram. In this What's What with Klutz episode, I provide personal training updates, highlights recent indoor track races emphasizing women's distance running (duh), and shares thoughts on the role and perceptions of influencers in the running community. After overcoming a foot injury, I talk about my return to training, detailing the excitement of running 35 miles over six days a week, alongside biking and strength training. I share plans to participate in upcoming races, including the Valkyrie trail race and the Vail hill climb, and hint at a birthday challenge involving running 34 miles. The episode then transitions to discuss the world of women's indoor track, celebrating recent achievements and expressing enthusiasm for the sport's future, particularly focusing on athletes like Parker Valby. Lastly, the discussion turns to the influence of social media on running, debating the merits and criticisms of influencers receiving free race entries and the expectations placed on these individuals for their content and personal training choices. 00:00 Welcome to a Solo Episode with Klutz and Birdie! 01:06 Diving Into Training Updates and Future Race Plans 12:04 Exciting Highlights from Recent Indoor Track Races 20:56 Anticipation for the Olympic Year and Athlete Highlights 21:34 The Buzz Around Parker's Training and Cross Training Insights 23:24 The Debate Over Influencers and Free Marathon Bibs 28:28 Expectations and Responsibilities of Influencers in Running 33:05 Training Philosophies and Social Media Perceptions 39:07 Closing Thoughts and Listener Engagement Links: 5000m World Indoor Track Championships: https://youtu.be/AiVQY4xHCU4?si=O36EXUAvFcq8VHDZ 1500m World Indoor Track Championships: https://youtu.be/BzwPy4HmU0s?si=2BLxinPIK4JJn_NS 5000m NCAA Indoor Track Championships: https://youtu.be/cWA0_Wow3TM?si=riHQWBTwYEad86es 3000m NCAA Indoor Track Championships: https://youtu.be/Gxo4kmemDEU?si=GGlAZhbJhieZe502 Katy's post: https://www.instagram.com/p/C4EFVAqv7y0/?igsh=NzdxZnV1ZnJ4bW1m _____ Get 15% off your first order of Precision Fuel & Hydration: https://visit.pfandh.com/3TgaDkf CONNECT WITH ME: Apply for run coaching Subscribe to my newsletter Instagram TikTok Website Email --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coaching-klutz/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coaching-klutz/support

In this episode of "Running: State of the Sport," George and Amby chat with Chris Chavez, founder and prime mover-shaker behind Citius Magazine. In just a few years, Citius has become a top media player in coverage of elite track/field and road racing. While carrying old media nomenclature, ie, "Magazine," Citius is a thoroughly modern digital operation. It includes podcasts, blogs, newsletters, and on-site coverage of major events like the Olympics, World Championships, and U.S. Championships. Chavez himself races everything from the mile to the marathon, including a 3:17 in last fall's NYC Marathon. But he ranks higher as a writer-reporter, having learned the ropes at Sports Illustrated before founding Citius Magazine. George and Amby were impressed that Chris discussed the business side of Citius as openly as the editorial operation. Also, he explained his passion for attracting more young folks to become fans of running (and even media like himself.) Chris expressed no regrets about how super shoes have affected the sport, and didn't pull punches when naming his top 3 male and female picks for the Marathon Trials on Feb. 3. He's got a sense of humor, too. Chris said one of his Fairy Godmother Wishes for the coming year was to sell Citius Magazine for a price like what the New York Times paid for The Athletic. (Which is thought to be $550 million.) Go for it, Chris! Before the conversation with Chris, George and Amby discussed some of their favorite running podcasts of 2023. Amby's list included: the "Let's Run podcast," "Koop Cast" with coach Jason Koop, and Ali Feller's "Ali on the Run." George noted: Citius Mag's recent podcasts with Parker Valby, Katelyn Tuohy, and CJ Albertson; "Nobody Asked Us" with Kara Goucher and Des Linden; "Set the Pace" with Rob Simmelkjaer and Meb Keflezighi; "The Morning Shakeout" with Mario Fraoli; and "Some Work, All Play" with Megan and David Roche. In this episode of "Running: State of the Sport," George and Amby chat with Keira D'Amato, the American record holder at 10 miles and the half-marathon, and the second fastest ever in the marathon with her 2:19:27. These performances make Keira a top contender in the February 3 Olympic Marathon Trials. Keira has followed an unusual path to her current running. Soon after college, she stopped serious training to get married, have two children, and start a real-estate business. She stayed away from elite running for more than a decade. However, she zoomed back in 2019 with a 2:34 marathon in Berlin, and she's only been getting faster since. Before talking to Keira, George and Amby discussed the biggest recent news in running. George was impressed by Parker Valby's win in the NCAA Cross-Country Championships, especially by her low training mileage. He also noted noted that Harvard's Graham Blanks became the first Ivy League winner at NCAAs. Blanks called his race "dumb ass" after finishing, but there wasn't much evidence of that. Amby mentioned that Harvard has an actual world-record runner in physics prof Jenny Hoffman. She recently set a female record for the run across America, averaging 63 miles/day for 47 days. Amby was also intrigued by Jonathan Gault's report at LetsRun.com on the increasing use of a sodium bicarbonate mix by top runners. (It's legal but often produces more "runs" than running.) It's claimed that Kelvin Kiptum, Molly Seidel, and Jakob Ingebrigtsen have been using the bicarb mix. "It's not like I'm jogging on those days [that I'm running] or that I'm cross-training easily. I think people underestimate what I'm doing. When I cross-train, there are puddles of sweat on the floor to the point that our recreational center has to put out 'Wet Floor' signs because I sweat that much. One time, they put an 'Out of Order' sign on my machine because they thought it was leaking. Little did they know, it was my sweat." Florida's Parker Valby just won the 2023 NCAA Cross Country individual championship title after a runner-up finish behind NC State's Katelyn Tuohy in 2022. She wrapped up an undefeated 4–0 season that includes wins at the Nuttycombe Invitational, the SEC Championships and the NCAA South Regional before winning it all in Charlottesville just nine days ago. She dominated the race and covered the 6K course in 18 minutes and 55 seconds to win by just over 10 seconds. Parker is also the NCAA Outdoor 5000m champion and owns a personal best of 15:20 for 5000m and 8:49 for 3000m. She has drawn a bunch of attention to her training methods after telling the media that she only runs two to three days a week while cross-training a lot in between. We dive into and clarify a bit about her training. We discuss what's got her excited for track season and we answer a few of your listener questions submitted via Instagram. SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS
The 2023 NCAA Championships are in the books and Graham Blanks of Harvard got a convincing win as Parker Valby of Florida was dominant, and so were Dave Smith's Oklahoma State men, while the NC State women edged NAU thanks to some heroics by Katelyn Tuohy. We break it all down, plus have the best thing in running, thread, email and post of the week, and debate Katelyn Tuohy's possible pro contract. We brought some big-time gratitude to this supersized Thanksgiving episode! The main topic was a new study looking at how fueling during training impacts next-day performance and protein degradation. We are seeing a new world order in eating and training! We also present some contrasting perspectives from prominent coaches, trying to discern between data and anecdotes, highlighting where there is nuance. The future is here. The future is TASTY. And sometimes the future will be STICKY. With many listeners traveling for Thanksgiving, we figured it would be a good time to do our longest episode ever, full of our favorite discussions. Topics: methods to improve running cadence, training with music, winter gear and staying warm, a profound listener message on their fueling journey, a ballad for the thick hogs, the Western States lottery's exponential growth, an NCAA Cross Country Champs recap, Parker Valby's low volume running plan, the great Between Two Pines podcast, UTMB Whistler follow-up, our thoughts on Sam Altman's ouster from OpenAI, concerns about a SWAP podcast curse, Strava as a dating app, some of the science on sodium bicarbonate supplementation, worries about doping using worm blood (seriously), and hot takes. We hope this episode is like your Thanksgiving celebration: wet and covered in gravy. For a weekly bonus episode (and bi-weekly newsletter, plus merch), make sure you're subscribed to our Patreon. Katelyn Tuohy vs Parker Valby: Part III "Stop me if this sounds familiar. Florida's Parker Valby (2nd at 2022 NCAAs) is running eye-popping times that make her look untouchable, while Katelyn Tuohy is racking up big wins by leaving competitors in the dust over the final mile, setting up a head-to-head matchup with the hype of a heavyweight title fight. It feels like deja vu, when both runners were co-favorites headed into 2022 NCAAs. We all know how that turned out, with Valby going out hard on a grueling course and Tuohy hunting her down to run away with a convincing win. This year though, there is one key difference: unlike 2022, Tuohy and Valby have a head-to-head matchup on their cards already headed into the championships. At the Nuttycombe Invitational five weeks ago, Valby set a course record in brutal conditions, running away from the NC State star over the second half of the race. It was a shock to see Tuohy – who went undefeated last season – get outclassed and an incredible sign for Valby believers to see her speed translate over the hills that hurt her last November. Tuohy has cruised to impressive wins in her two races since the defeat, and should still be considered a slight favorite until someone takes the trophy from her hands, but it's clear Valby is on a different level than she was last year, and it might just be enough to give the University of Florida its first individual cross country champion." Today on the podcast is the one and only Parker Valby! Parker Valby is an exceptional athlete who has made a lasting impact in both track and field and cross country. With a list of accolades that include being a USTFCCCA All-American, USTFCCCA South Regional Runner of the Year, and First Team All-SEC, Parker's talent, and dedication are undeniable. Her remarkable performances, from setting school records to winning an NCAA title, have solidified her as one of the greats. In cross country, she has demonstrated her strength and endurance, securing victories, earning All-American status, and placing second at the 2022 National Meet. Parker's unwavering commitment to excellence, both on the field and in the classroom, has been recognized through her inclusion in academic honor rolls and All-Academic teams. Most recently, in Austin, Texas, at the 2023 NCAA Track and Field Championships, Parker won the Women's 5k in dominant fashion running 15:30.57 in brutal conditions. In this conversation, Parker recaps her last year and all the performances, the highs and lows, and more. While hearing about Parker's journey in sport is inspiring, and I guarantee you'll find value from hearing about her perseverance and dedication, the highlight of this conversation was Parker and I having the most random discussion about other things that is highly entertaining. From being scammed $20k to being chased by wild boar on easy runs, and everything in-between. This conversation was light, fun, inspiring, and you'll walk away impacted with many laughs along the way. Tap in to the Parker Valby Special. On this week's Outside the Oval, host Gavin Frick is joined by his high school teammate Michael Gray, who helps Gavin breaks down this past week in the sport. Together, the two analyze the fallout from the Nuttycombe Invitational, as well as Parker Valby's return, Tennessee's unique racing schedule, and what is to come during the remainder of the season. Later in the show, Gavin is joined by Andrew Kent, who briefly runs through his career as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket, while also highlighting his time in Boulder and what else is to come from this Colorado team in 2022. This, and a whole lot more on this week's trip Outside the Oval.
In today's episode of the podcast, I have the great privilege of speaking with Parker Valby. Parker is an accomplished runner who competes for the University of Florida. Most recently, Parker placed second in the NCAA Women's 5k after only a few weeks of training after coming back from a broken foot. Those points scored helped her team clinch the team title! In this episode, we dive into Parker's upbringing in the sport from starting to smashing state records in high school. We then go into her time at the University of Florida and this past NCAAs. Lastly, we answer your unique listener questions. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Parker! Her hard work ethic, determination, and enthusiasm for this sport is inspiring.
