Bree-Bree can do anything! Bree Masters is a sprinter who recently became the first Australian woman in 24 years to make a 100m semi-final at an Olympics. In this conversation, we cover Bree's life as a triple threat (dancer, surf lifesaver, sprinter), what it's like to line up next to defending World Champion Sha'Carri Richardson and scoring free tattoos in the Olympic village! Bree Masters was a dancer growing up in New South Wales. She attended a performing arts high school in Sydney and had dreams of becoming a professional dancer. Running on the track and on the sand was also a big part of Bree's life. She was a talented surf lifesaver, excelling in beach sprints, and moved to the Gold Coast to compete professionally. After winning the World Beach Sprint title in 2016 and the Australian Beach Sprint title in 2019, Bree wanted a new challenge and turned her attention to the track. Since switching her focus to track five years ago, Bree progressed quickly. She made her international debut for Australia at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, where she ran 100m in 11.29 – the fastest time by an Australian woman at a global meeting in 15 years. She also competed at the World Champs in Budapest and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Earlier this year at London Diamond League she was part of a 4 x 100m relay team that broke the Australian Record (42.48). At the Paris Olympics, Bree came third in her heat (11.26) to become the first Australian woman to make an Olympic 100m semi-final since 2000. Her current 100m PB is 11.23, which she ran in Auckland, New Zealand. While Bree also competes in the 200m (23.21 PB), she's recently focused her attention on the 100m. Bree balances life as an athlete with a part-time role in public relations with apparel brand, LSKD. -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

The 22-year-old is set to line up for his maiden Games experience, running the 1500m for Australia in what's set to be one of the most anticipated events of the whole calendar. "I feel like I was underlooked a little bit on social media. Everyone was talking about Cam (Myers) and Olli (Hoare) and Stewy (McSweyn), but I think that kind of worked in my favor. There's no pressure – I had everything to gain and nothing to lose. So I was like, “Alright, let's go out here and have a crack at it.” I think it was kind of a blessing in disguise almost." Wisconsin's Adam Spencer is the Australian 1500m national champion. He was the runner-up in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships back in March. In Adelaide, he just narrowly beat out fellow Badger legend and Olympic finalist Olli Hoare. It was widely considered the best 1500m field in Australian history and it delivered with a tactical race that came down to the final 100 meters. Adam has the Olympic standard from his 3:31 personal best at last summer's London Diamond League. Now, he's just got to prove his fitness to selectors and he'll be squared away to make his Olympic debut in Paris. He did represent Australia at last summer's World Championships in Budapest. We recorded this a few weeks ago and since then, he just won the Big Ten title in the 800 meters. Watch for him as the NCAA season heads into its championship run, where he'll be looking to win his first NCAA title. "It feels like a goal that's within my grasp of achieving. Not only am I stronger and smarter than I was last year, but I feel like I've come a long way and will be able to attack this race with a lot more confidence to chase the world record. When I went (to Millrose) for the first time, I was just chasing the American record. So I feel like changing that mindset, just seeing how far I've come, it feels like a very real possibility at this point." U.S. outdoor mile record holder Yared Nuguse will return to the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City for the 116th Millrose Games to defend his men's Wanamaker Mile title. Last year, Nuguse made his Millrose Games debut and won and set a U.S. indoor mile record of 3:47.38. He barely missed the world record of 3:47.01 set by Yomif Kejelcha in 2019. Nuguse put together a career year in 2023 with a 7:28.23 for 3000m indoors (American record); a personal best of 3:29.02 for 1500m (the fastest performance by an American-born runner); 3:43.97 outdoor mile (an American record and the fourth-fastest performance in history; a victory at the London Diamond League 1500m and a fifth place finish in the 1500m final at the World Championships. Most recently, he ran 3:56.58 at the Merrie Mile in Honolulu to come just .45 seconds shy of breaking the road mile world record. The Millrose Games is the sixth stop on the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold calendar. Livestream and television broadcast details will be announced in the coming weeks. After successfully navigating the highways and byways of continental Europe, a tanned but not so fit Sean Whipp re-joins the Down the Track team for Episode 22. Joining Sean and Tim in the DTT hot seat is Hamish Beaumont – a man who needs no introduction. The episode kicks off with Sean enlightening us on his European tour as an athlete manager, culminating in Catriona Bisset’s record breaking 800m performance at the London Diamond League. Sean also reflects on the World University Games in Naples before moving on to an in depth analysis of the Australian performances in London. And as we move to the latter stages of XCR’19, Hamish delivers an honest assessment of the various Premiership and relegation battles across the divisions. Athletics Victoria CEO Glenn Turnor also provides some comment and thoughts on the XCR series by way of an interview recorded immediately after the Lake Wendouree race. Lisa Weightman lit up the Australian running scene in Sydney last weekend by running a World Record for an 40 year old over the classic 10km road race distance. Lisa’s time of 31:55 was a PB for the three time Olympian who is looking toward Tokyo to join a very elite group of four time Olympians in athletics. We hear from Lisa about her run and the next phase of her preparation. Joining Lisa as a World Record breaker, Steve Moneghetti ran a big race on his home circuit to take the World 55 to 59 record for the 15km. Mona joins DTT for a quick chat about the Lake Wendouree event. In another feature interview we catch up with Sam Rizzo, the Ballarat based wheelie who under the guidance of Richard Colman has his sights set firmly on the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. We round out the feature interviews by catching up with Nick Earl at the Tasmanian Cross Country Championships at Pontville. Nick agonizes over being beaten by someone half his age and having heckling directed at him from across Bass Strait by Hamish Beaumont. In the Hot Topics Sean, Tim and Hamish tackle the issues around Shayna Jack and the current crisis Swimming Australia now face, while the Caster Semenya case continues to attract headlines, this time due to the fact she will not be competing in the upcoming World Championships. We've recorded 50 episodes! How on earth has that come about? Thank you *so* much to those of you joining us on our error-strewn, star-sprinkled athletics' romp to date. We've loved every minute of it (especially when Jody made the pacemaker his Fantasy Diamond League captain...).Claire's been away covering the Netball World Cup, but these major international meets don't journalise themselves, so Jody and Bayo headed to the London Stadium to speak to the following at the Anniversary Games: Karsten Warholm, Laviai Nielsen, Jakob Ingebrigsten, Gjert Ingebrigsten, Beth Dobbin, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Katarina Johnson-Thompon. Big names? Complete it, mate. From Gjert telling us that Jakob's got 'baby fat' to lose before he can really excel in the 5000, to Karsten describing the final few seconds of a 400mH as hurting 'so fucking good' - this episode's chock-full of T&F titbits hotter than the Northern Line right now. Plug in and enjoy. As ever, we'd love your feedback - positive or otherwise - or just to chat about athletics with you. Find us on Twitter - @BackstraightB and @Claire_GThomas - or Instagram @backstraightboyspodcast. Thanks for listening!
