He's the Olympic Champion, World Record Holder, World Champion and now Commonwealth Champion. Seems like the perfect mic drop moment for a 23 year old to swim like a frog off into the sunset. But while we'll never understand the stroke, this guy loves swimming fast breaststroke, and he's keen to take the WR even lower. Somewhat surprisingly, it may be his freestyle training that gives him the fitness to close faster than anyone in the field. Also, why is freestyle the only stroke that has events longer than 200m? Zac thinks he could be world champ at the 300m or even 400m BR. Sounds like a promoter needs to make this happen. There's the challenge. Any takers? Enjoy our chat with Zac! Today on the podcast I am excited to bring back an episode we actually did three years ago.    I wanted to share this episode again now with Becky Downie, due to the recent podcast with her younger sister Ellie.    Becky now 30 is a double Olympian for Great Britain becoming Commonwealth Champion on bars not once but twice, European Champion on bars, and World silver medalist on bars.   I was really fortunate to sit down and interview Becky back in 2019 and talk about overcoming adversity in her career, injuries, the ups and downs, and how she continues to work hard and be positive given her long career.    We also talk about her sister and given how popular the episode with Ellie was, I wanted to reshare this episode with Becky as a lot of people who are new to the podcast might not realize that we have this fantastic episode with Becky.   I also wanted to bring it back and tie these two episodes together because they both have so much incredibly valuable information that coaches, gymnasts, medical providers, and particularly parents should study and learn from.   To really understand how to get the best out of athletes and help them with their performance, increase the longevity of their career whilst staying as healthy and happy as possible.    We discuss:   What would Becky do differently now looking back on her gymnastics journey?   How to deal with stress as a gymnast.   The secret to Becky's long and successful career.   Overcoming injuries and sets backs, advice from an Olympian.   And…   How Becky balances adult life, the Doubledownies Company, alongside being a full-time elite athlete.

It was also a career born out of adversity and an underdog mindset - George missed out on selection for the 2008 Olympics, but charted a path to the summit of the sport without the huge profile push the Olympics can bring. George talks candidly about how his rise to prominence wasn't accidental - he visualised and planned each step along the way, including crafting huge rivalries with childhood-friend-turned-nemesis James Degale and established champion Carl Froch. Everything was considered - right down to the clothes he wore to press conferences. Roland Schoeman has been to an incredible four Olympic Games and is one of South Africa's most decorated Olympians. In Athens 2004, he was part of the 4 x 100m freestyle relay that won Gold against the heavily favoured Americans and Australians, and also came away with 2 individual medals - a silver in the 100m freestyle and bronze in the 50m.  Over his almost 16 year career, he broke 5 world records and was multiple World and Commonwealth Champion. By his own admission he was a typical 'Type A' personality - hyper driven, competitive and focused. While this helped him to become one of the best swimmers in the world,  as is so often the paradox in sport, it also wrecked havoc with his wellbeing and happiness. In this open and honest discussion, Roland talks about the dark moments in his career and how after narrowly missing out on his 5th Olympic Games in 2016, he realised something needed to change. He describes his journey over the past four years to becoming a kinder, gentler version of himself, and finding peace with himself and life.

In this episode, Eric continues his conversation with the Indian number two of Indian chess: Super Grandmaster Pentala Harikrishna (1986) from India. In this episode Eric and Hari talk about the first book Harikrishna wrote, "Beat the French with 3. Nc3". Hari explains that it is not only a book about the French Defence, but also a book about general opening principles, strategies and he explains that is is not always useful to pick the best computer move and to trust your instincts. There is a lot of text in the book, which makes it interesting for a wide range of players. The book was published by Thinkers Publishing. LTAC recommended! However, there is another amazing story Hari has in store for us: he tells about his meeting with the legend of all legends, Bobby Fischer. He met him in Reykjavik, Iceland in 2006. Don't miss it! Pentala Harikrishna became the youngest grandmaster from India on 12 September 2001, a record now held by Gukesh D. He was Commonwealth Champion in 2001, World Junior Champion in 2004 and Asian Individual Champion in 2011. Pentala won the Tata Steel Group B in 2012 and the Biel MTO Masters Tournament Open event in 2013. He represented India at seven Chess Olympiads from 2000 to 2012 and won team Bronze at the World Team Chess Championships in 2010. At the Asian Team Championships, Pentala won team gold once, team silver twice and individual bronze once. In July 2020, he won with 5.5 points out of 7 games the Chess960 event, that was part of the chess tournament in Biel. He also represented India in the Online Olympiad 2020 where India won the gold medal along with Russia. In February 2013, Pentala's FIDE rating passed 2700 for the first time. He broke into the top ten players in the world in November 2016 with a FIDE rating of 2768. His current rating (February 2021) is 2730.  Do you like LTAC? In 2011 Chris was a lead mentor on a the 'Sky Sports Living for Sport' - inspiration programme across the UK & Ireland. The programme was designed to assist disengaged people from society to get back on track. This role involved training up former Olympians and World Class Athletes to deliver inspirational talks and mentoring/coaching programmes. The role involved working with the most challenging of young people whilst coaching athletes to transition from sport to mentoring. During the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Chris was selected to mentor and coach the next generation of Olympians on the 'Ambition Programme'. This programme involved taking 350 potential Olympians to experience an Olympic games (London). Chris's role was mentor the athletes to maximise the whole experience and to expand their personal development. Here and now .... Currently, Chris and his wife Erica, run their own Learn to swim business - 'Swim Buddies' which has seen the business (located in Darlington, UK) grow from 7 swimmers in their first week in September 2014 through to over 900 children swimming with Swim Buddies every week. “If you’re going to inspire people, you have to step up.” Hear how Stacey Copeland has been breaking down barriers in the world of sport for years as an FA Cup finalist and Commonwealth boxing champion - her work is only just getting started. A master of football and boxing, Stacey has since set her sights on a new mission – to challenge gender stereotyping and create a world where gender is never a barrier to human potential.  Now that’s purpose.  We Built This City is a series of conversations with some of the amazing Mancunians - born, bred or adopted – who put the heart into modern Manchester. A celebration of the human grit, determination and love found throughout the city, these episodes will lift you up, make you laugh and inspire you to leave our city in a better place. _ _ _ _ _     When Stacey first wanted to become a boxer, it was illegal, and when she tried to play football she was told she wasn’t allowed to play with the boys. As a girl, she couldn’t fight in her grandad’s gym, or have a kickabout with the lads at school.    Thankfully, Stacey’s not one to let adversity stop her.   She is now a celebrated athlete in the UK, having represented her country in both football and boxing, and in 2018 became the first ever British woman to win a boxing Commonwealth title.       _ _ _ _ _   Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. From that point, the business, and its team members, have been involved in helping to support the creation of Modern Manchester – across regeneration, business, charity, leisure and hospitality, sport and culture.    To celebrate the 24 years that Roland Dransfield has spent creating these bonds, Lisa is gathering together some of her Mancunian ‘family’ and will be exploring how they have created their own purposeful relationships with the best city in the world.       Connect with Lisa and Roland Dransfield: Via Phone: 01612361122 Via their website (http://www.rdpr.co.uk/) On Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/roland_dransfield/) On Twitter (https://twitter.com/RDPRtweets)   On Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0YW3lVDOWrE0QZlV6XjEtF?si=nEuISHWcRfCF8l3kHKRNSw)     Connect with Stacey: Via her website (https://www.stacey-copeland.co.uk/) On Twitter (https://twitter.com/scopelandboxer)

We're two athletes with stories to tell of our long careers.  If you don't know us, then here's a bit about us. So one of us is Dan Greaves - better known in our world as Discus Dan - and that's because he throws the discus pretty far.  Far enough to win the Gold medal at the Athens Paralympics in the F44/46.  And silver at Sydney in 2000 and London in 2012.  And bronze in Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016.  He's three times World Champion, 4 times European Champion and once Commonwealth Champion.  And he's from Anstey in Leicestershire. And the other is Martyn Rooney.  Also known as Rooney.  He got a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in the 4x400m relay.  He's got a silver and two bronze in the World Championships in the relay.  And three golds, two silvers and a bronze in the European Championships in the relay and individual.  He's from Thornton Heath but now lives in Loughborough. This episode looks back to the London Olympics and the London Paralympics in 2012 - the biggest sporting event to be held in the UK in this millennium.   We talk about what it's like to walk out in front of 80,000 fans.  And how it feels when you run badly and that crowd goes quiet!  Dan reveals his idea to get the edge in the warm-up room.   More about Dan on discusdan.co.uk And follow us on social media @DiscusDan @MartynRooney

Interview with Colin Oates, 2 time Olympian and Commonwealth Champion. We discuss his Olympic and Commonwealth experiences, centralisation and rule changes.

Tea with a Titan: Conversations Steeped in Greatness |Achievement | Olympics | Olympians| Success | Athletes | Entrepreneurs

After I attacked him at our mutual neighbour’s house and begged him to be a Guest Titan, Mark and I talk Olympic fever and, in particular, all things luge. In fact, Mark is one of Britain’s most successful Luge racers, having raced in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City and in the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turino. In Salt Lake, he achieved his goal of being the highest ranked finisher from a country without a home track. Proudly self-funded for the majority of his 12 year career, he was told he was too old to pursue a career in luge when he switched from pole vaulting to luge at 21 years of age. Mark is two-time Commonwealth Champion and six-time British Champion. Despite a fracture in his spine in 2001, through hard physical work and a fierce competitive spirit this humble but competitive dynamo overcame all this prior to his two Olympic Games. During his luge career he raced in every World Cup but one -- due to injury -- and all Major Championships, winning Great Britain’s first international Luge gold medal in 2004 in the Lake Placid Nations Cup. The cherry on top of all this awesomeness? Mark just happens to also have been a Marks & Spencer child model. True story.

Matthew Syed has been an achiever all of his life. A triple Commonwealth Champion and two-time Olympian, Graduating with a first from Oxford, A writer for The Times since 1999 and to top it all off, he's also a winner of Sports Journalist of the Year. His most recent accolade however, and the focus for our interview on Maximise Potential, has been the launch of his first book, called 'BOUNCE', where he creates a compelling argument which dismisses the traditional view that success is based around talent. Here's Matthew to explain his perspective in far more detail whilst relating it to his own life and career. SYNOPSIS: Everyone knows that David Beckham crosses the ball better than anyone else and that Tiger Woods never "chokes". But what are the hidden factors which allow the most successful sports stars to rise above their competitors - and are they shared by virtuosos in other fields? In Bounce Matthew Syed - an award-winning Times columnist and three-time Commonwealth table-tennis champion - reveals what really lies behind world-beating achievement in sport, and other walks of life besides. The answers - taking in the latest in neuroscience, psychology and economics - will change the way we look at sports stars and revolutionise our ideas about what it takes to become the best. From the upbringing of Mozart to the mindset of Mohammed Ali - via the recruitment policies of Enron - Bounce weaves together fascinating stories and telling insights and statistics into a wonderfully thought-provoking read. Bounce looks at big questions - such as the real nature of talent, what kind of practice actually works, how to achieve motivation, drugs in both sport and life, and whether black people really are faster runners. Along the way Matthew talks to a Hungarian father whose educational theories saw his daughters become three of the best chess players of all time, meets a female East German athlete who became a man, and explains why one small street in Reading - his own - has produced more top table-tennis players than the rest of Britain put together. Fresh, ground-breaking and tackling subjects with broad appeal, Bounce is sure to be one of the most talked about books of the year. TESTIMONIALS FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE READ 'BOUNCE': Thought provoking read - ounce is a very interesting and thought provoking book. It basically argues that for any significantly complex human activity (especially sports like tennis, football and golf, and games like chess) natural talent is of pretty low importance because the wiring of the brain required to succeed can only be achieved through a massive amount of "purposeful" practice. life changing insights - Bounce is a remarkable book. Its central argument is that there is no such thing as natural talent and that top achievement is the consequence of huge amounts of a very particular kind of practice. This may sound radical, but the evidence is compelling. What a moorish read! - Wow what a great book. It's extemely well written and full of substantive, supportive evidence to back up each point. Even for a non sports fan like me (my husband actually bought this book for himself) I would thouroughly recommend this book -you'll be hooked once you read it. Bounce - Bounce is the most interesting book that I read in 2010. Very informative and challenging - This is a challenging book. The author rejects the concept of talent, innate ability and genetic pre-disposition almost entirely. He backs up the thesis with some impressive anecdotes and makes a good case.
