Episode 143 Doe ID: 'Mentone John Doe' Derrick Burton  In October, 1991, a hunter in the area of Mentone, CA discovered a human skull. The skull was devoid of teeth and a mandible. Based on the size of the skull, it was estimated to be a child's. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's department searched the area for more remains but they didn't find any. However, they found a bag containing a child's clothing, and took it into evidence. An autopsy confirmed initial beliefs that the remains were that of a child; a young boy between 4 & 8 years old. A cause of death could not be determined. The authorities considered local missing persons cases, but didn't link the remains to any of those missing children, and the dead boy was referred to as 'Mentone John Doe'. It wasn't until decades later that the authorities turned to IGG to determine the identity of  Mentone John Doe. He turned out to be, Derrick Burton. Incredibly, Derrick had been reported missing to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's dept when he was four years old  by his mother Patricia Clark in 1991. How the agency failed to make the connection between Mentone John Doe, and Derrick Burton early on is a mystery. Derrick had gone missing while in the care of his stepfather; Christopher Hammond. Hammond did time for charges related to Derrick's abduction, but not his death.  Sadly, it doesn't seem as if there is much movement in the case since Derrick was identified, or how much his death is being investigated. 'Mentone John Doe' now has his name back; it's Derrick Burton, and this is his story.  To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. John Tapp Racing

The famous Hoysted racing dynasty had its origins in Victoria early in the twentieth century and has produced generations of successful horse trainers. The most celebrated was Fred Hoysted who won 17 Melbourne premierships from his Mentone base. Like most of his predecessors 33 year old Matthew Hoysted began his journey in Wangaratta, before working under the wing of some top Melbourne horsemen. In 2014 he decided on a move to Queensland when a job came up with Tony Gollan after which he spent eight years in partnership with recently retired Steve O'Dea. Matt went solo just over a year ago, and is already making his presence felt in the Brisbane training ranks. He begins the podcast by talking about his on course stabling at Eagle Farm and the close proximity of his home. Matt talks about the success he enjoyed on Saturday March 15th- a quinella in the last race at Eagle Farm and a Gold Coast double which included a win with Hearts Are Better in the 3YO Jewel. He looks back on eighteen rewarding months with Tony Gollan whose star was rising rapidly. Matt says the offer he received from Steve O'Dea was too good to refuse. He spent four years as O'Dea's assistant trainer before being promoted to training partner. He formed an association with Jamie Walter's Proven Thoroughbreds during his time with Steve O'Dea and was delighted when Walter agreed to continue that support following O'Dea's retirement. One of the best horses Hoysted got to co-train with O'Dea was Scallopini  who won 13 races and was placed 14 times. He acknowledges the talents of the genuine galloper. Matt says he and Steve O'Dea were usually on the same wavelength when it  came to planning the campaigns of horses in their care. He pays a fitting tribute to Uncommon James, the best horse he got to co-train with O'Dea. He looks back on the gelding's Oakleigh Plate win in 2023 as an almost surreal experience.  Matt says he wasn't surprised when Steve announced his retirement from the Brisbane training ranks. The young trainer looks back on early days with the O'Dea stable where he met the girl destined to become his wife and the mother of his two young daughters. He talks about Caitlin's pride and joy Pickabee, a daughter of Jet Spur with whom she won five races. Coincidentally, Pickabee would become the dam of Uncommon James. Matt looks back on his formative years in Wangaratta and early tuition from his father Greg. He also spent some time with another training relative Roger Hoysted. He puts the spotlight on grandfather Ron (call me Mick) who trained a Gr 1 sprinter in the 1980's. Another member of the clan to get a mention is Hal Hoysted winner of 25 premierships in north eastern Victoria. Matt relates the stories he's heard from family members about Fred “Father” Hoysted, winner of 17 Melbourne premierships between 1933 and 1958.  He talks of the racing blood on the distaff side of his family. His mother Ronda is the daughter of John Hickmott and sister to Robert and Michael- all successful trainers.  Matt takes us back to the early years of his racing education and valuable time spent at Flemington and Macedon Lodge.  He talks of his association with some high profile horses during his time under the Lloyd Williams banner. He treasures the memory of five years with the late Michael Moroney at Flemington. Matt adds his personal tribute to the many already circulated for the great New Zealand born horseman. For punters listening to the podcast, Matt pointers a couple of promising horses currently in the stable. It's a laid back chat with a young man who has the right pedigree and the right temperament to make it to the top in a very demanding profession.

The beginning of Volume XXV has curious numbering, reflecting the fact that Spurgeon is very sick in Mentone while these sermons are being produced and published. There are combinations of letters and mediations from his sickbed with shorter sermons preached on different occasions. Most of them, taken together, are the same length as his regular output, but following the pattern can be a touch confusing. These sermons share a certain approach: taking a physical experience and drawing a spiritual parallel. So you have here a nose and eyes! The nose belongs to the child whom God raised from the dead by Elisha, and that child's seven sneezes become a parable of the simple, unpleasant, monotonous, and sure indications of spiritual life in a newly-regenerated man or woman. The eyes belong to Hagar, and—just as the Lord opened her eyes in the wilderness to see the water which she needed for the life of her and her son—so we need our eyes opened. Spurgeon wonders at what remarkable things we might see if our spiritual eyes could see the past, the future, the angels, or the coming glory. He thinks of the things that darken our eyes to spiritual reality, and yearns for God to open the eyes of the inwardly blind, before thinking of the things which a believer might see at the communion table: Christ near at hand, our standing in Christ, and our happy prospects. May God open the eyes of us all, to see Christ for salvation, and to know our joy in him! Winterizing an RV is a critical task that can mean the difference between a smooth spring awakening and a costly repair bill. Eric Stark opens the discussion with a detailed examination of the common pitfalls that RV owners face when preparing their vehicles for cold weather. He emphasizes the importance of thorough preparation, explaining how neglecting to drain water systems or use RV-specific antifreeze can lead to catastrophic damage, including cracked pipes and ruined appliances. Throughout this segment, Eric provides listeners with practical tips to ensure their RVs are winterized effectively, including a comprehensive checklist that covers all essential components. This careful attention to detail is crucial for RV owners who want to protect their investment and enjoy their travels without the burden of unexpected repairs. The conversation then shifts to the joys of maintaining and enhancing an RV rather than trading it for a new model. Eric and co-host Alexis discuss how small upgrades and renovations can dramatically improve the RV experience. They share insights on budget-friendly projects, such as refreshing the interior with new paint or replacing outdated flooring. Alexis recounts her own renovation experiences, highlighting how these enhancements can make an RV feel more like a home. This segment encourages listeners to see their RVs not just as vehicles but as personal spaces that can be tailored to their needs and preferences, enriching their travels. The episode also introduces listeners to Guntersville and Mentone, Alabama, two towns that offer unique experiences for RV travelers. Guntersville, with its vibrant lakefront and local festivals, serves as a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Mentone, on the other hand, is presented as a quaint historical town with deep roots in the Cherokee Nation and Civil War history. Eric and Alexis emphasize the charm of exploring lesser-known towns, suggesting that these destinations provide more intimate and memorable experiences compared to larger, commercialized locations. By the end of the episode, listeners are not only equipped with practical winterization tips but also inspired to embark on new adventures, embracing the rich history and beautiful landscapes that smaller towns like Guntersville and Mentone have to offer.Takeaways:Proper winterization of your RV can save you from costly repairs in the spring.Consider local businesses for RV projects as they often provide better service and support. Simple updates like new flooring or paint can significantly enhance your RV's interior appeal. Always run RV antifreeze through all water lines to prevent freezing and damage.Check your RV's roof regularly during winter to prevent leaks and water damage. We've had several emails from older racing fans requesting a podcast with former legendary jockey Ron Hutchinson. I'm sorry you missed the interview we posted three and a half years ago with the famous Australian jockey who also left an indelible mark in Europe. Like his compatriot Scobie Breasley, Ron reached great heights in the veteran years and won a Singapore premiership at age 53. In response to continued enquiries I'm thrilled to present once again our 2020 podcast with a great jockey and a special human being. He delights in talking about his present day racing interest and frequent visits to Melbourne meetings. Ron pays tribute to his four kids- daughters Susan and Sally and sons Peter and Raymond. He takes us right back to childhood days when his parents strongly opposed his ambition to become a jockey. Ron looks back on valuable tuition from famous old time jockey Bobby Lewis whose fourth Melbourne Cup win was in 1927. He still shares the Cup riding record with the late Harry White. You won't believe how clearly Ron recalls his very first winning ride at Mentone in 1945, and his first major win in the Australian Cup of the same year. “Hutchy” was christened the “Cups King” long before Bart Cummings earned the tag. He talks of some of his 60 Cup wins around Australia. He looks back on his Melbourne Cup CV. He wasn't able to win the great race in 16 attempts but says there were a couple he'd like to have over again. Ron says the opposition was so strong during his Melbourne riding days that he was happy to get away with one premiership in 1958/59. He speaks highly of two high profile horses he rode before going overseas. The former champion jockey recalls the telegram he received from Irish training whiz Paddy Prendergast offering him a stable retainer. He looks back on the early months of the new partnership and an important Irish 2000 Guineas win on Kythnos. “Hutchy” recalls a successful week at Royal Ascot in 1960 which was followed by a surprise offer from a very high profile owner. He's never forgotten the loyalty of the Duke of Norfolk who retained him for 17 years. He says he was thrilled to be able to deliver the Duke's dearest wish- a win in the famous Ascot Gold Cup. Ron pays tribute to three British racing icons. He looks back on his biggest racing disappointment- the loss of the ride on the 1966 English Derby winner. The legendary horseman explains that he would have been on the 1978 Derby winner Shirley Heights, but had decided to retire six months earlier. Ron recalls the pride he took in donning the Royal colours. His very first ride for Queen Elizabeth was a winner at Lingfield. He remembers his excitement when Balmerino arrived in England. He identified the talented New Zealander as the horse to bring down the curtain on his career. Ron didn't realise at the time that subsequent tempting offers would delay his retirement plans. He remembers his final three seasons in Malaysia/Singapore and another jockey's premiership at age 53.  “Hutchy” reflects on many a racing accident in thirty three years of race riding, but says he was relatively lucky. We look back on a lovely night I spent with the Hutchinsons in England 50 years ago. Ron and Norma were splendid hosts. You don't often get to hear the reminiscences of a man who rode his first winner in Melbourne at the end of WW2 and went on to amazing success internationally. This podcast will always be one of my favourites.

Got a question for the trio? https://forms.zohopublic.com/propertyplanningaustralia/form/GotaquestionforthePropertyTrio/formperma/zYCQAxzE_24CVlDafP1ozyzwtmB-8m1iCNtCTgDvHXMThe Trio enjoy fielding this second question from a loyal, long time listener, Alison. Only last year, Alison reached out to ask the Trio to weigh in on a stay/move question. Alison and her daughter were living in a recent purchase on the inner-side of Melbourne's Nepean Hwy, but missed their days by the beach in their former home. Alison had purchased a four bedroom townhouse on 'the other side', but aside from missing her beach life, she also found the home was too big for their needs. The Trio encouraged her to make the move back to their old stomping ground, and Cate recalled some of her happy days in her old 'hood in beachside Mentone too. Alison, now 47, took the plunge this year. She rented out the four bedroom townhouse and purchased a three bedroom unit back on the beach side of Mentone. This time, she writes to the Trio to ask about their thoughts on whether she should retain the four bedroom townhouse, or whether she should sell. With all of the changes to land tax and possible changes to planning laws, ongoing rental reforms and heftier interest rates, Alison is feeling a little bit nervous and wondering what the Trio think. She notes that her large townhouse is projected to be cashflow neutral in six years, but she is also mindful of the pressure she faces as a sole bread-winner. She is also managing a property in the Bass Coast and while her long term intention is to retain this property into retirement, Alison throws out the question to the team about her entire portfolio. "Do I hang on to the 4 bedder and wait until it has enough value to clear my ppr mortgage? Or should I hang on to it for the longer term- past 6 years until it is earning me money? I know it won't be for a long time." First and foremost, the Trio congratulate Alison on her achievements and in particular, her ability to pivot quickly. According to the Australian Landlords Association, landlords own more than 80% of rental properties. Despite this significant contribution, it often feels like landlords are somewhat overlooked (and in some cases, trampled on) in discussions focusing on the challenges facing renters. Dave starts with Alison's property planning and shares some astounding projections. Alison currently owns $2.92 million worth of property at age 47. If Alison is able to hold onto these assets over a long term growth rate of 5% per year, by age her wealth position will be as follows:60 - $5.36m65 - $7m70 - $8.8m80 - $12.94mThis gives listeners a glimpse into the power of time. Dave also delves into debt retirement and timeframes for cashflow neutrality.... tune in to hear more. The Trio then step into Alison's future rental returns and they also consider the necessary evils; land tax and other taxes. When it comes to property portfolio management, knowledge is power, and cashflow is king.Dave's overview is valuable and his preference for targeting capital growth assets comes to light in this listener Q&A. Tackling interest costs, short term cash shortfalls and buffers is a popular theme for this gripping episode, but what Cate shares in relation to rental growth is important for Alison to take note of. Like a strand of DNA, the rent does broadly grow in line with the rate of capital growth, but not always in perfect synchronicity. Gross rental yields are typically elastic, and Alison can look forward to enjoying long term rental growth at the same rate as her capital growth rate. From selling Bass Coast to selling the townhouse, holding all and working hard for more years, the Trio each share their thoughts, pro's and cons, risk mitigants, and they each give Alison some good food for thought. No divestment decision is easy for investors, and Alison gets three points of view in this Listener Q&A ep. And our gold nuggets....Mike Mortlock's gold nugget: Mike shares a carrot and stick analogy. The stick is the tax, but the carrot, (the capital growth) is harder to focus on because the stick can hurt. It's important to remain objective. Dave Johnston's gold nugget: "The starting point for any successful property plan is understanding the numbers and the long term implications for any options and choices that you have in front of you." Cate Bakos's gold nugget: Cate uses a real-life, personal example to share with listeners the power of time. Show notes: https://www.propertytrio.com.au/2023/10/09/sell-or-hold-listener-question/

On January 24, 2000, sheriff's deputies in Mentone, Alabama stopped an older model Lincoln with Ohio plates that they suspected was involved in a hit-and-run accident earlier that day. The driver was thirty-seven-year-old Hayward Bissell of Norwalk, Ohio and strapped into the seat beside him was the remains of his twenty-four-year-old girlfriend, Patricia Booher. To the deputies' horror, Booher's hand and leg had been severed from her body, her eyes had been gouged out, and her heart and liver had been torn out, but were still in the car. Further investigation revealed that, in addition to Booher's murder, Bissell had also attempted to kill two other couples on what appeared to be a rampage across two states.Thank you to the ever so talented David White for research assistance :)-Schizophrenia & Psychosis Action Alliance - Website:sczaction.orgServices: Education and support groups National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)Website:nami.org Services: General resources for mental health Domestic Violence: -US Hotline Number: 1(800)-799-7233-The Battered Women's Justice Project: **We donated to them, I met with them and they are amazing**Website: BWJP.org Services: Free legal help -Center For Domestic Peace Website: Centerfordomesticpeace.org Services: Support groupsReferencesActon, Andy. 2000.

The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1497 John Cabot, the Canadian Explorer, set sail from Bristol, England, on his ship, Matthew. He was looking for a route to the west, and he found it. He discovered parts of North America on behalf of Henry VII of England. And in case you're wondering why we're talking about John Cabot today, it's because of the climbing rose named in his honor. And it's also the rose that got me good. I got a thorn from a John Cabot rose in my knuckle and ended up having surgery to clean out the infection about three days later. It was quite an ordeal. I think my recovery took about eight months. So the John Cabot Rose - any rose - is not to be trifled with.   1519 Leonardo da Vinci, the mathematician, scientist, painter, and botanist, died. Leonardo once said, We know more about the movement of celestial bodies than about the soil underfoot.   He also wrote, The wisest and noblest teacher is nature itself.   And if you're spending any time outdoors, we are learning new lessons in spring. Isn't that the truth? There's always some new development we've never encountered - and, of course, a few delights. Leonardo continued to study the flower of life, the Fibonacci sequence, which has fascinated them for centuries. You can see it in flowers. You can also see it in cell division. And if you've never seen Leonardo's drawings and sketches of flowers, you are missing a real treat, and I think they would make for an awesome wallpaper. Leonardo once wrote about how to make your own perfume. He wrote, To make a perfume, take some rose water and wash your hands in it, then take a lavender flower and rub it with your palms, and you will achieve the desired effect. That timeless rose-lavender combination is still a good one.   I think about Leonardo every spring when I turn on my sprinkler system because of consistent watering. Gives such a massive boost to the garden. All of a sudden, it just comes alive. Leonardo said, Water is the driving force in nature.   The power of water is incredible, and of course, we know that life on Earth is inextricably bound to water. Nothing grows; nothing lives without water. Leonardo was also a cat fan. He wrote, The smallest feline is a masterpiece.   In 1517 Leonardo made a mechanical lion for the King of France. This lion was designed to walk toward the king and then drop flowers at his feet. Today you can grow a rose named after Leonardo da Vinci in your garden. It's a beautiful pink rose, very lush, very pleasing, with lots of lovely big green leaves to go with those gorgeous blooms. It was Leonardo da Vinci who wrote, Human subtlety will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple, or more direct than does nature because in her inventions, nothing is lacking, and nothing is superfluous.   1803 On this day, Napoleon and the United States inked a deal for the Louisiana Purchase and added 828,000 square miles of French territory to the United States for $27 million. This purchase impacted the Louis and Clark Expedition because they had to explore the area that was bought in addition to the entire Pacific Northwest. To get ready for this trip, Meriwether Lewis was sent to Philadelphia. While there, he worked with a botanist, a naturalist, and a physician named Benjamin Smith Barton. He was the expert in Philadelphia, so he tutored Meriwether Lewis to get him ready because Lewis did not know natural history or plants. So he needed to cram all this information to maximize what he saw and collected. Now, in addition to all of this homework, all of this studying about horticulture and botany and the natural world, Meriwether made one other purchase for $20. He bought himself a big, beautiful Newfoundland dog, and he named him Seaman. It's always nice to have a little dog with you while exploring.   1806 The garden writer John Abercrombie died.  The previous day, John had fallen down some steps. He had broken his hip a few weeks earlier, and so this last fall is what did him in. John was a true character. He loved to drink tea. He was a vegetarian. He was Scottish, and he was a lifelong gardener. His most significant success was his book, Every Man His Own Garden. John would go on to write other books on gardening like The Garden Mushroom, The Complete Wall and Tree Pruner (1783), and The Gardener's Daily Assistant (1786), but none of them rose to the level of popularity as Every Man His Own Garden. John and his wife had 17 children, and they all died before him - with his last child dying about ten years before he died on this day in 1806.   1867 Thomas Hanbury bought a property in the French Riviera that he called La Mortola. In 1913, The Botanical Journal shared the story of Thomas and his brother Daniel, and it also described the moment that Thomas saw his property for the first time. It had been the dream of Thomas Hanbury from his early youth to make a garden in a southern climate and to share its pleasures and botanical interests with his favorite brother. While staying on the Riviera, in the spring of 1867, after many years of strenuous work in the East, he decided to carry out his plan. He was first inclined to buy Cap Martin, near Mentone, but gave up the idea as soon as he became acquainted with the little cape of La Mortola. As he first approached it by sea, he was struck by the marvelous beauty of this spot. A house, once the mansion of a noble Genoese family, and at that time, though almost a ruin, known as the Palazzo Orego, stood on a high commanding position. Above it was the little village, and beyond all rose the mountains. To the east of the Palazzo were vineyards and olive terraces; to the west, a ravine whose declivities were here and there scantily clothed by Aleppo pines; while on the rocky point, washed by the sea waves, grew the myrtle, to which La Punta della Murtola probably owed its name.   So Thomas purchased this incredible property in May of 1867, and by July, he returned with his brother, and together the two of them started to transform both the home and the garden. The article says that Thomas's first goal was to get planting because the property had been destroyed by goats and the local villagers who had come in and taken what they wanted from the property during all the years that it was left unoccupied now Thomas and Daniel went all out when it came to selecting plants for this property, and by 1913 there were over. Five thousand different species of plants, including the opuntia or the prickly pear cactus, along with incredible succulents (so they were way ahead of their time). Thomas loved collecting rare and valuable plants and found a home for all of them on this beautiful estate. Now, for the most part, Thomas and his brother Daniel did the bulk of the installations, but a year later, they managed to find a gardener to help them. His name was Ludwig Winter, and he stayed there for about six years. Almost a year after they hired him, Thomas's brother Daniel died. This was a significant loss to Thomas, but he found solace in his family, friends, and gorgeous estate at La Mortola - where Thomas spent the last 28 years of his life. Thomas knew almost every plant in his garden, and he loved the plants that reminded him of his brother. Thomas went on to found the Botanical Institute at the University of Genoa. The herbarium there was named in his honor; it was called the Institute Hanbury and was commemorated in 1892. As Thomas grew older, the Riviera grew more popular, and soon his property was opened to the public five days a week. The garden is practically never without flowers. The end of September may be considered the dullest time. Still, as soon as the autumnal rains set in, the flowering begins and continues on an ever-increasing scale until the middle of April or the beginning of May. Then almost every plant is in flower, the most marked features being the graceful branches of the single yellow Banksian rose, Fortune's yellow rose, the sweet-scented Pittosporum, the wonderful crimson Cantua buxifolia, and the blue spikes of the Canarian Echium.   But Thomas knew that there were limitations, frustrations, and challenges even in that lovely growing zone. It was Thomas Hanberry who said, Never go against nature.    Thomas used that as his philosophy when planning gardens,  working with plants, and trying to figure out what worked and what didn't - Proving that even in the French Riviera, never go against nature.   1928 On this day, folks were lined up to see the lilacs in bloom at Hulda Klagers in Woodland, Washington. Here's an excerpt from a book by Jane Kirkpatrick called Where Lilacs Still Bloom. In it, she quotes Hulda. Beauty matters… it does. God gave us flowers for a reason. Flowers remind us to put away fear, to stop our rushing and running and worrying about this and that, and for a moment, have a piece of paradise right here on earth.   Jane wrote, The following year there were two articles: one in Better Homes and Gardens and yet another on May 2, 1928, in the Lewis River News. The latter article appeared just in time for my Lilac Days and helped promote Planter's Day, following in June. They were covering the news, and we had made it! In the afternoon, a count showed four hundred cars parked at Hulda Klager's Lilac Garden in one hour, the road being lined for a quarter of a mile. It is estimated that at least twenty-five hundred people were there for the day, coming from points all the way from Seattle. In addition, there were several hundred cars during the week to avoid the rush. Today you can go and visit the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens. It's a nonprofit garden, and of course, it specializes in lilacs. The gardens are open from 10 to 4 pm daily. There's a $4 admission fee - except during lilac season when the admission fee is $5.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation A Gardener's Guide to Botany by Scott Zona This book came out in December of 2022, and the subtitle is The Biology Behind the Plants You Love, How They Grow, and What They Need. I think it's that last part - what they need - that most gardeners are intrigued by. If you're a true botany geek, you'll love every page of Scott's book. I wanted to share a little bit from the preface of Scott's book. Scott, by the way, is truly an expert. He's a research botanist by training, and his undergraduate degree is in horticulture, so he's a lifelong gardener and a trained expert. He's a conscious-competent. He knows exactly what he is writing about, Here's what he wrote in the preface of his book. As I sit down to write, I gaze at the windowsill near my desk. On it sits a dwarf sansevieria forming little rosettes of deep green leaves above. It hangs a slab of cork on which is mounted a tiny air plant that is pushing out oversized violet flowers, one at a time. Nearby are two plants, an agave, and an aloe, that have similar forms, but one evolved from Mexico and the other in South America. Above them, a furry-leaved and a hybrid philodendron both grow contently in the diffuse light that reaches the shelf next to the window. My most curious visitors might ask a question about a plant or two, and when that happens, I can barely contain my delight. There is so much to tell. Well, this book starts out with a chapter called Being a Plant, and if you are a bit of an empath, you may feel that you understand what it's like to be a plant, but Scott is going to tell you scientifically what does it mean to be a plant.   He writes in chapter one, For most people, the plant kingdom is a foreign land. It's inscrutable. Inhabitants are all around us, but they communicate in a language that seems unintelligible and untranslatable. Their social interactions are different. Their currency doesn't fit in our wallet and their cuisine. Well, it's nothing like what we eat at home in the plant kingdom. We are tourists.   So I would say this book is for the very serious and curious gardener- and maybe you. This book was a 2023 American Horticulture Society Award winner. I love the cover. It's beautiful, and of course, I love the title, A Gardener's Guide to Botany. This is the perfect book to round out your collection. If you have the Botany in a Day book, it looks like a big botany workbook. I love that book. This book is a great companion to that. There's also a book called Botany for Gardeners, and when I think about Scott's book here, I will be putting it on the shelf beside both books. This book is 256 pages that will amp up your understanding of plants - No more mystery -and provide all of the answers you've been looking for. You can get a copy of A Gardener's Guide to Botany by Scott Zona and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $20.   Botanic Spark 1772 Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg, better known by his pen name Novalis, is born. He was an 18th-century German poet and writer, mystic, and philosopher of early German romanticism. All last week I was watching videos about Novalis. He led such an exciting but short life. He had a tragic romance after falling in love with a girl who tragically died of tuberculosis, and then Novalis himself died young. He died at 28 of tuberculosis as well. But in his concise life, he accomplished so much, including the fact that during his life, he had three moments of mystical revelation, which led to a deeper understanding of the world and time, and humanity. This is partly what makes him such a fascinating person to examine. One of the things that we remember Novalis for is his fascination with blue flowers. He made the blue flower a symbol of German romanticism. To Novalis, the blue flower represented romantic yearning. It also meant a point of unification between humanity and nature. It represented life, but it also described death. And if you are a gardener who the blue flower bug has bitten (and who hasn't? I mean, who does not love a blue flower?), you know what I'm talking about. Blue blossoms are so rare. They're so captivating. Most people can relate to Novalis' love of Blue Flowers and why it became so significant in his writing. Now the book where Novalis wrote about the Blue flower is a book called Henry of Ofterdingen, and it's here where we get these marvelous quotes about the blue blossom, which some believe was a heliotrope and which others believe was a cornflower, But whatever the case, the symbolism of the blue flower became very important. Novalis wrote, It is not the treasures that have stirred in me such an unspeakable longing; I care not for wealth and riches. But that blue flower I do long to see; it haunts me, and I can think and dream of nothing else.   And that reminds me of what it was like to be a new gardener 30 years ago. A friend got me onto growing Delphinium, and I felt just like Novalis; I could not stop thinking about the Delphinium and imagining them at maturity around the 4th of July, standing about five to six feet tall, those beautiful blue spikes. And, of course, my dream of the Delphinium always surpassed what the actual Delphinium looked like, and yet, I still grew them. I loved them. And I did that for about ten years. So there you go, the call and the power of the blue flower. Novalis writes later in the book, He saw nothing but the blue flower and gazed at it for a long time with indescribable tenderness.   Those blue flowers command our attention. Well, I'll end with this last quote. It's a flower quote from Novalis, and it'll get you thinking. Novalis was a very insightful philosopher and a lover of nature, and he believed in the answers that could be found in nature. And so what he does here in this quote is he asks a series of questions, and like all good philosophers, Novalis knows that the answer is in the questions and that the questions are more powerful than the answers. Novalis writes, What if you slept?  And what if, in your sleep, you dreamed?  And what if, in your dream, you went to heaven and plucked a strange and beautiful flower?  And what if, when you awoke, you had the flower in your hand?  Ah, what then?   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

They continue the conversation begun in a December 2022, podcast with Richard Reeves of the Brookings Institute, discussing his new book, “Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why it Matters, and What to do About it.” As Mr. Burns explains, the discussion with Dr. Reeves was the “30,000-foot view” of issues facing boys and men, and this latest discussion is from the ground-level. “These gentlemen have daily experiences dealing with boys and how they are struggling with – and yes, overcoming – the challenges of today's world."

Got a question for the trio? - https://zfrmz.com/uLtjhyBskV96PY6eJfaI https://propertyplanning.com.au/propertyplannerbuyerprofessor/ In this week's episode, Dave, Cate and Pete take you through: 1. Our first listener question is a bit of a terrifying one. Charlotte is looking to buy her first home next year and asked the trio if it is normal for a selling agent to offer a 'free' buyer's agent who receives substantial commission fees from the seller. Charlotte felt it doesn't seem right.... and the trio agree with her. 2. Matt is keen to access his available equity in his current investment property and asks the trio for some tips "Instead of having one six hundred thousand dollar property going up in value, you could have two six hundred thousand dollar properties, and in theory you're effectively doubling your net wealth in the future", says Pete 3. Shashank raises the question of how to manage building insurance with the rapid increase we're seeing in construction costs and the trio discuss the importance of understanding total rebuild costs, as opposed to relying on an online insurance estimate. "Did you know that 83% of Australians are under-insured on their properties?" (MCG Quantity Surveying) 4. Sarah, a Bayside resident of Melbourne asks the trio for some help with her scenario options. She and her children moved from 'beachside' Mentone to the other side of Mentone, yet she's missing her old neighbourhood and wonders what guidance the trio could offer. Should she rent-vest, buy/sell, or buy/invest. Cate says, "Follow your heart, and go back to the beachside. Buy there if you can, don't rent there. Your capital growth prospects based on the scarcity and desirability of the area will outperform non-beachside." And our gold nuggets.... David Johnston, the 'Property Planner's Gold Nugget: Dave's gold nugget relates to thinking through the various options before you jump in to make your next purchase. Trying to find experts who can give you the numbers to enable us each to make an informed decision. "Our next purchase is always the most important one." Cate Bakos, the 'Property Buyer's Gold Nugget: Cate's gold nugget is all about taking the opportunity to set your plan and arrange your finance over the holiday break so that you can hit the ground running in 2023 and make the most of the market when it reopens. A songwriter, singer, pianist, actor, and comedian known for his caustic sociopolitical humor, Eddie Perfect (IG: @edmundperfect) (TW:@theeddieperfect) released his first comedy album, Welcome to the Inside of Ed's Head, in 2003. Having already worked original songs into his live comedy act, he wrote the satirical Shane Warne: The Musical, based on the life of the Australian cricketer. It premiered in 2008. Starting in 2010, he spent six years on the TV comedy-drama Offspring, and appeared as a judge on Australia's Got Talent's eighth season in 2016. Trying his hand at Broadway, he found work as a lyricist on King Kong in 2018. A year later, Perfect received a Tony Award nomination for his playful score to Broadway's Beetlejuice. A native of Mentone, Victoria, Perfect earned a bachelor's degree from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2001. While honing his live stage material, he landed guests spots on Australian TV series such as the drama Blue Heelers and sitcom Kath & Kim. He released his first two comedy albums, Welcome to the Inside of Ed's Head and Angry Eddie, in 2003 and 2005, respectively. His live show The Big Con, a collaboration with actor Max Gillies, toured theaters in 2005. Also that year, he premiered his own comedy show, Drink Pepsi, Bitch!, releasing an album of the same name in 2006. The year 2007 saw Perfect playing multiple characters in Casey Bennetto's Keating! The Musical, about former prime minister Paul Keating. Perfect's own Shane Warne: The Musical opened at the Melbourne Athenaeum Theatre in December 2008, with a national tour to follow. The show won the Helpmann Award for Best New Australian Work. Meanwhile, Eddie Perfect & the Renovators contributed two songs to the March 2009 Vitamin Records release The Colors Tribute Album, Vol. 1. The show-business polymath next directed and hosted all ten episodes of reality show The Ultimate School Musical and performed the autobiographical song cycle Songs from the Middle, both in 2010. Later in 2010, he took the role of Mick Holland in the hit Channel Ten comedy-drama series Offspring, where he stayed through 2016. In the meantime, he played Mack the Knife in two different productions of the musical play The Threepenny Opera, and his show Misanthropology, a mix of music and social satire, premiered at the Sydney Festival in 2011. A live album of the show arrived later that year. Perfectstarred in an updated version of Shane Warne: The Musical in 2013, with a cast recording to follow a year later. In 2015, a revived Songs from the Middle was captured live at the Sydney Opera House, featuring Perfect, Iain Grandage, and the Brodsky Quartet. Around the end of his run on Offspring in 2016, Perfect appeared as a judge on the eighth edition of Australia's Got Talent, alongside Kelly Osbourne, writer/actor Ian Dickson, and actress Sophie Monk. By then, Perfect had moved his home base to New York City, where, partly inspired by the success of countryman Tim Minchin, he pursued a career on Broadway. His first credit was writing lyrics for the Broadway version King Kong. With music by Marius de Vries, the musical had premiered in Melbourne in 2013, with a reworked version making its New York debut in October 2018. Featuring music and lyrics by Perfect and a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the stage musical Beetlejuice (based on the 1988 Tim Burton film) premiered in Washington, D.C., that same month before moving to Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre in April 2019. The show went on to receive eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The cast album was released by Ghostlight in June 2019 and reached the Top Ten of Billboard's independent albums chart.
