Saint Joseph's Distributes Over 10 Tons of Food Over 100 volunteers from Saint Joseph's Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the Knights of Columbus Council 4599 came together to distribute over 10 tons of food to Cobb County families in need. This annual initiative, led by Saint Joseph's Catholic Church outreach ministries, prepared over 200 Thanksgiving food boxes, each complete with turkeys, hams, and around 70 pounds of food. Thanks to the generous contributions of parishioners, the team collected over 20,000 pounds of food and meat, ensuring families not only enjoyed a full Thanksgiving dinner but also had plenty of leftovers. Order a catfish po-boy or a few pounds of crawfish in Acadiana any Friday between Mardi Gras and Easter, and you may be surprised to learn that your delight is another person's sacrifice. The Catholic tradition of abstaining from meat during Fridays in Lent is alive and well in Southwest Louisiana, a region where more than a third identify as Catholic. Thanks to the long list of Catholic churches and restaurants that roll out an array of delectable seafood options on Lenten Fridays, it's not much of a burden. St. Francis of Assisi in Breaux Bridge and the Knights of Columbus Council at St. Pius X in Lafayette both have long-standing Lenten fish fry traditions that bring together their communities and welcome anyone hungry for fried catfish, regardless of religion. Olde Tyme Grocery in Lafayette sells close to 2,300 seafood po-boys during the 40-day period. Religious abstinence never tasted so good.    The episode was reported and produced by Sarah Holtz. Sarah is an independent radio producer and documentary artist based in New Orleans.   Learn more about your ad choices. He was arrested the day after the shooting in Rome, and is currently incarcerated there. Nash faces charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He also has additional charges from Floyd County and holds from the Cobb and Hamilton County sheriff's offices......stay up to date on this story at mdjonline.com     Story 2: 95 units   A developer is seeking approval from the Smyrna City Council to expand a previously approved apartment complex by adding 95 units. The Creekside Towers development, located off South Cobb Drive, plans to increase the unit count from 200 to 295. While the building's height would remain the same, the space for amenities would be reduced, and additional underground parking would be included. The city planning staff and planning commission have recommended approval of the application. If approved, construction is set to begin in winter, and the tower would consist of various unit types. The developer has also pledged to reserve four units at reduced rates for city first responders.     Story 3: council   The City Council is set to vote on appointing Kathy Young to represent Ward 7 for the remainder of 2023. The vacancy in Ward 7 was created when Lewis Wheaton resigned after moving out of his ward. Mayor Derek Norton and council members have expressed support for Young's appointment. Young, a part-time college and career adviser at Campbell High School, has a background in economic development and civic involvement. Another resolution is to read the lives of the Saints daily to provide us examples of leading good Catholic lives 3) We must resolve to: go to the Sacrament of Confession on a regular basis; conduct a daily examination of conscience in the evening to help us discover what we have done well and what we need to improve on; make regular visits to the blessed sacrament where we can listen to what God is directing us to do 4) We should resolve to increase our fasting, sacrifice, and Mass attendance. By fasting, we learn to control our base instincts which when in control allows us to focus more clearly on Christ. In sacrificing we imitate Christ in an effort to become more like him and assist those in need. In regular Mass attendance, which we are required to do, we witness the greatest example of sacrifice that the world has ever known. In shifting gears to the Knights of Columbus Council level Brothers should resolve to invite men to join the Order, to become more active and in doing so evangelize themselves, their families, and their communities Theme: "Salve Regina" performed by Floriani. Order a catfish po-boy or a few pounds of crawfish in Acadiana any Friday between Mardi Gras and Easter, and you may be surprised to learn that your delight is another person’s sacrifice. The Catholic tradition of abstaining from meat during Fridays in Lent is alive and well in Southwest Louisiana, a region where more than a third identify as Catholic. Thanks to the long list of Catholic churches and restaurants that roll out an array of delectable seafood options on Lenten Fridays, it’s not much of a burden. I'll bet you've heard your students complain about where they live...the community where you teach them by the way. I did my share of whining when I was a teen. I felt like little New Concord, Ohio was nowhere. And yet, there's virtually no nowhere anymore! We all live and function in a global economy. If your students don't believe it, have them conduct a simple inventory of what they're wearing and carrying. Ask them to record where all of their possessions are manufactured. I'll bet they're not lugging around to much Made in the USA.Unfortunately, some in our nation would like be isolated. This is a fool's errand. Students, on the other hand, who embrace the international nature of modern existence will prosper. Teachers, therefore, have an obligation to help students pursue and master this paradigm. To help in this quest, today's episode will feature the urbane Brad Gosche. Brad is the Vice-President of Education and Communication at the Columbus Council on World Affairs. Here's the council's two-fold mission:To be the leading nonpartisan, globally-focused organization in the Columbus Region. The Council fosters a community that is well-informed about critical international issues as they affect the world, nation and the local region, and whose citizens utilize this insight to make effective decisions in our global society. This episode will not only inspire you to include a global perspective in your curriculum, it will also provide two outstanding activities you can employ tomorrow. The first is Geert Hofstede's country comparison model. The second is taking your kids on a wonderful Trip to Mintana. We were broadcasting LIVE for the News at Noon and The Valley Today from American Legion Post 53 in Front Royal today. Grand Knight John Dickhute with Knights of Columbus Council 9002 in Woodstock and Frank Nauer with Sweats for Vets. We talked about the Knights of Columbus organization, it's history, mission and what their members do for the community. Frank gave us the history of Sweats for Vets and talked about the joy on the faces of all the vets at the VA center in Martinsburg when they delivered more than 750 sets of sweats last year. If you'd like to contribute to the Sweats for Vets program, you may drop your sweats in collection boxes across Winchester/Frederick County at any Bank of Clarke County location. In Shenandoah County, you can leave your donation at your local First Bank office. Cash donations are also needed and accepted at any Knights of Columbus office in your area. Guidelines for sweats donations include: New sweat suits only (sets preferred) All sizes accepted with a focus on L, XL, 2XL Do not wrap the sweats in gift wrap but tie each set with Christmas ribbon Please add a label with the size of the sweat suit If possible, please put the name of the donating organization on the label If making a cash/check donation, please make check payable to Martinsburg Medical Center Sweats will be delivered to the Martinsburg Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV on January 7, 2017 For additional information about the Sweats for Vets program, contact Frank Nauer, Volunteer Services Representative at the Knights of Columbus, Pope John Paul II Assembly #2914 via email: fwnauer@msn.com.
