Starting and growing a new relationship can be exciting and it can also be confusing, especially if we've been hurt in the past. The way we feel about ourselves dictates the actions we take in our life, which can form addictions…some you may not even realize are addictions and are affecting you in your life today; people pleasing, addiction to relationships, and overworking. I had the honor of interviewing my sponsor and mentor of 12 years, Di McQueen, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Addiction expert as well as her business partner and dear friend, Dr. Brian Jackson, Doctor of Addictive Disorders. They join me on this episode to discuss their experience with their own addictions, the power of asking for help and how to love yourself. This episode is one I am going to cherish forever. __________________________________ Would you like some 1-1 support to learn how to date smarter by opening your heart and trusting again and/or to build a business based on your desire to share what you've learned with others?https://katiegrimes.thrivecart.com/breakthrough-session/

Alcohol Use Disorder remains the largest cause of substance use disorder in our country. Sadly, the COVID pandemic has exacerbated the problem. There are science based dietary guidelines for alcohol consumption with definitions on how much is one drink. Test yourself to find out if you are a High Risk drinker by using the ReThinking Drinking calculators. Listen to Dr. George Koob, the leading scientist in the world on alcohol as he explains the pandemic effects on alcoholism as well as innovative solutions. George F. Koob, Ph.D., is an internationally-recognized expert on alcohol and stress, and the neurobiology of alcohol and drug addiction. He is the Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), where he provides leadership in the national effort to reduce the public health burden associated with alcohol misuse. As NIAAA Director, Dr. Koob oversees a broad portfolio of alcohol research ranging from basic science to epidemiology, diagnostics, prevention, and treatment. Dr. Koob earned his doctorate in Behavioral Physiology from Johns Hopkins University in 1972. Prior to taking the helm at NIAAA, he served as Professor and Chair of the Scripps' Committee on the Neurobiology of Addictive Disorders and Director of the Alcohol Research Center at the Scripps Research Institute. Early in his career, Dr. Koob conducted research in the Department of Neurophysiology at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and in the Arthur Vining Davis Center for Behavioral Neurobiology at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Experimental Psychology and the MRC Neuropharmacology Unit at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Koob began his career investigating the neurobiology of emotion, particularly how the brain processes reward and stress. He subsequently applied basic research on emotions, including on the anatomical and neurochemical underpinnings of emotional function, to alcohol and drug addiction, significantly broadening knowledge of the adaptations within reward and stress neurocircuits that lead to addiction. This work has advanced our understanding of the physiological effects of alcohol and other substance use and why some people transition from use to misuse to addiction, while others do not. Dr. Koob has authored more than 650 peer-reviewed scientific papers and is a co-author of The Neurobiology of Addiction, a comprehensive textbook reviewing the most critical neurobiology of addiction research conducted over the past 50 years. Dr. Koob is the recipient of many prestigious honors and awards for his research, mentorship, and international scientific collaboration. In 2018 Dr. Koob received the E.M. Jellinek Memorial Award for his outstanding contributions to understanding the behavioral course of addiction. In 2017 Dr. Koob was elected to the National Academy of Medicine(

Dee McGraw is joining Tim to discuss the upcoming West Coast Symposium on Addictive Disorders and how the event is evolving with the times to help connect addiction specialists and share what’s working in the field right now. Find out how you can register for the symposium and make the most of the conference by learning new treatment strategies and networking with like-minded people. Dee has a BS in psychology from Vanderbilt University, an MSW from Grand Valley State University, and over 28 years of experience in the substance abuse disorder & prevention field. Not being able to meet in person due to Covid-19 has been very challenging for addiction specialists. C4 has been around for 33 years and was originally founded as a group discussion around the idea that addiction treatment services should be reimbursed and treated in ways that science has shown to be the most effective. They focus heavily on trying to spread the knowledge of the most effective ways to treat addiction. C4 also provides a broad range of continuing education credits to behavior health professionals. Dee is excited about connecting with people again during the next conference because they’ve done a lot to recreate the experience of an in-person event. One of the benefits of the virtual platform for the West Coast Symposium of Addictive Disorders is the ability to allow people to connect and interact with others that have similar interests. This can help them find their tribe a bit easier than a typical conference. Dee is not usually happy about being forced to change, but the current situation doesn’t leave much choice. Dee has had to learn a number of new things in order to help other people understand the new ways of connecting online. The topics that are going to make the biggest impact in light of the pandemic have to do with mental health, self-care, and compassion fatigue. There is a lot of trauma response Dee is seeing due to the pandemic and the general situation in the US. To get the biggest benefit from attending the conference you’ll have to figure out what your biggest ROI will be. For some that could take the form of networking and learning about what other people are offering and for others that could be the value they’ll receive in the educational workshops. Everybody should check out the exhibit hall at the very least. For someone who’s going to the conference just to learn, Dee recommends looking at the agenda, figuring out what you can do in two days and searching for programs that interest you specifically. The system they’ve put in place allows you to search by keyword. The discussion board is also a great place to find out what other people are talking about and ask any questions you may have. Each speaker has their own fan base and following and letting those people know that you are a part of the conference is a big help in raising their profile and letting people know what’s available to them. The C4 group originally negotiated an 18-year contract with the hotel where they’ve been hosting the conference and hopefully they can return to an in-person event again in the near future. Everything is up in the air at the moment but Dee is expecting that future events will likely have a virtual component either way. Dee has always been interested in the field of addiction and helping people. One of her earliest work experiences involved teaching people about themselves and alcohol and drugs. The knowledge was very transformational for people and made a major impact on Dee and what she saw as possible in helping people improve their lives. The common denominator for people in recovery and those that serve them is the simple desire to help others. It’s very humbling to be around such joyous and wonderful people. We all have a morning routine, whether or not we have designed it consciously. Dee decided at the beginning of the pandemic that she wanted to build some introspection into her life. She tries to get some exercise in the morning at least three times a week combined with a healthy smoothie which she sips on all morning as she answers her emails and plans the day. PTSD is under-discussed and over-stigmatized. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is often regarded as a ‘wartime diagnosis' and while it does affect a lot of veterans, this is furthest from the truth. PTSD does not discriminate and often goes unnoticed or at least disregarded as a potential diagnosis because of the stigmas associated with it. Because of the misinformation and perceptions surrounding PTSD, a lot of people, including those who serve on jury duty and our first line responders, often go without a proper diagnosis and treatment, in addition to there being limited resources. PTSD can be frightening and at times, extremely invasive to quality of life. I am so honoured to introduce Dr. Karla L. Sapp who was more than willing to have this important conversation in hopes of empowering, educating and helping our listeners. We discuss the specifics of PTSD, the stereotypes, the causes, the symptoms, how to best support someone with PTSD as well as how to support yourself. If you have any more questions, please let me know! And please share if you feel others could benefit from this conversation :) Available on: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/53mK17VPzqdS9IbCFUbs4I Itunes: h ttps://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-model-tongue/id1508822046 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJQ5r88mzVoeRZ8jjpHLP9Q?view_as=subscriber Connect with Karyn: Instagram: @karyninderr Youtube & Facebook: Karyn Inder Twitter: @themodeltongue Itunes & Spotify: The Model Tongue Connect with Dr. Karla: Karla L. Dr. Koob has authored more than 650 peer-reviewed scientific papers and is a co-author of The Neurobiology of Addiction, a comprehensive textbook reviewing the most critical neurobiology of addiction research conducted over the past 50 years. Neurobiology of Addiction refers to the of changes in the brain circuits of an individual after repeated use. In the most severe cases, there are changes in the reward system, decision making, and self-control become impaired. The specific changes in the brain will depend upon what addictive substance is used: alcohol, opioids, cocaine. These agents induce an increase in dopamine in the part of the brain called the basil ganglia which in turn produces an intense feeling of pleasure. The other part of the brain referred to as the prefrontal cortex becomes impaired after repeated substance use, which makes stopping more difficult. After repeated use, tolerance develops, and the brain needs more of the substance to create that experience of pleasure. This can make life without the substance feel less enjoyable. When a person experiences the pain of withdrawal symptoms, they will seek to use substances in order to reduce those distressing feelings associated with withdrawal. TherapyShow.com/Podcasts

Relapse means returning to a previous state. It is vital to understand that relapse does not just mean a return to addictive behaviors, nor does it mean just using. Relapses can happen in terms of people's mood, thinking patterns and behaviors. In actuality, a person's thinking patterns and behavior often become problematic long before they start showing symptoms of addiction or depression again. Some people call this return to old ways of thinking, behaving and feeling as "relapse warning signs" or "lapses." In my mind, it is actually the beginning of a relapse. That doesn't mean that the behaviors have to be continued to the point of using again. A relapse can stopped and corrected at any point. The earlier these old behaviors and ways of thinking are stopped, the less more likely the person is to stay healthy and happy. In this episode we will discuss ways to remain mindful in order to address any potential issues before they start impacting recovery. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Department of Child and Family Studies in Syracuse University’s David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics presented a day-long conference to examine the impact of violence in our community on March 21, 2014 Violence is exploding in many neighborhoods. The people who live surrounded by it—many of whom are children—can be traumatized by the recurring experience of facing death, pain, fear, and loss. The conference, presented by Falk College’s Department of Child and Family Studies, explored this epidemic of violence and the long-term wounds it inflicts on the children who grow up in its shadow. Community experts who deal with violence and trauma offered different perspectives on the problems—and the solutions. This portion of the conference was presented by Arnett Haygood-El Co-founder of Identity Research Institute and Dessa Bergen-Cico, Ph.D., CHES, CAS, Fellow of the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health, Food Studies and Nutrition at Syracuse University.
Chapter 17: Substance Use and Addictive Disorders
Earlier in the week we talked about taking risks. Today, we'll peer inside the betting brain to see how researchers are understanding risk-taking and decision-making when it comes to gambling. Gambling addiction, or compulsive gambling, is a type of impulse-control disorder. Even when gambling addicts know the odds are against them they can't "stay off the bet." Elizabeth George, with the North American Training Institute and the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders joins us. We'll also talk with Mary Sojourner, author of "She Bets Her Life." Studies show nearly half of the 6-8 million gambling addicts in America are women. Sojourner recounts her story of how she overcame her addiction after more than a decade.
