In this episode of OG Therapy, we dive into three major questions from a recent speaking event:
More women than men are reporting workplace bullying, and many of us feel increasingly lonely. Given that we spend so much of our lives at work, there is much to discuss regarding the connection between workplace bullying, loneliness, and the erosion of social cohesion. Melanie Wilde is deeply passionate about these issues and has recently established the Foundation for Social Health. This is a crucial conversation, especially given the changes we're witnessing across the community and as many of us dive into the new work year. Unfortunately, some individuals may be dreading this time, not due to work stress but because of the people they must interact with. Learn more about why this matters and the role we can all play in combating loneliness—not just through addressing workplace bullying, but in various other ways as well. Read Melanie's opinion piece in Women's Agenda about how workplace bullying is eroding social bonds. Let's engage in this discussion. About Melanie Wilde: An expert in mental health policy and service design with over 20 years of experience, Melanie leads a new national initiative to tackle Australia's loneliness crisis as CEO of the Foundation for Social Health. She has been published in The Age and Canberra Times and regularly comments on mental health issues with ABC Canberra. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Our social connections are vital to our wellbeing as human beings. Every model of wellbeing has relationships as one of its components but it very rarely gets talked about directly with patients, clients or coachees. We talk about physical health and mental health, but social health tends to get overlooked. Much of the deep thinking that's been dedicated to the issue, from Aristotle to Brené Brown, recognises that it's the deeper connections that we have with people that are the most important. But how do we talk to coachees about their social health and support them in giving thought to navigating their relationship landscape and strengthening some of those human bonds. In this episode we explore some of the research and developing ideas around social health, We also discuss ways in which we might start to have meaningful conversations with our coachees about their own social health. Hello, hi! Today's episode is a review and critique of the book “The Art and Science of Connection: Why Social Health is the Missing Key to Living Longer Healthier and Happier” by Kasley Killiam. This episode is designed to share a bit about the book, my major take aways, and a reflection on the key frameworks that might guide you to think differently about your connections. Are you a Butterfly, Firefly, Evergreen or Wallflower? Listen to find out! Episode Summary I'm going to review and apply the concepts from the newly published book The ARt and Science of Connection by Kasley Killiam I share my review of the book, what I liked and what didn't work for me Killiam writes “Health connection with other people requires a health connection with yourself. Which includes: knowing yourself, caring for yourself, honoring your needs and bringing that authentic self into interactions with others.” “Research has shown that lonely people tend to be hypervigilant in social interactions and more prone to focusing on the negative than the positive: more guarded, they have more self-doubt, they might feel more self-conscious and make more assumptions about their interactions.” These realizations from the book have me asking: Are you lonely? (PS It's totally ok and normal if your answer is yes) Interactions as millennials and mothers might be laden with a lot more nuance and context that adds to this hypervigilance and monitoring of our interactions in a way that leads to self-criticism and more loneliness Connection (even healthy positive connection!) will always require time and energy, yet time and energy usually feels like a scarce and precious resource for millennials and mothers Is social health different for Millennials than other older generations? I think so! I'll share the four connection “personalities” outlined by Killiam: Butterfly, Evergreen, Firefly and Wallflower PLUS I couldn't help but add a fifth personality of my own! How do you know how to improve your relationships? There are 4 options: Strengthen, Rest, Tone and Flex Once you gain awareness about the way connection meets your needs and how you want to improve your connections the hardest part is likely going to be taking action - and seeking connection from others to meet those needs - relying on others to respond to those needs: you can do it! Jeannine Rivers, Suicide Prevention Educator, author, speaker, and certified mentor, joins me for a discussion on the family relationships that promote social health.
When we think of common health and wellness advice, it is often centered around physical and mental health, with advice ranging from exercising regularly to going to therapy. But what if we also looked at social health as a part of our overall wellness? In 2023, the World Health Organization reported that loneliness is a global health threat. Studies have shown that maintaining strong social ties can lead to a longer life span. We spoke with Kasley Killam, MPH, author of The Art and Science of Connection: Why Social Health Is the Missing Key to Living Longer, Healthier, and Happier, about the framework around strengthening our social muscle, how optimal social health can look different for each of us, and how our social health can improve our overall health leading to a longer and more gratified life.
In preparation for Global Loneliness Awareness Week (GLAW), June 10-June 16, 2024, we decided to bring on guest, colleague, and friend Jillian Kornmeier, who is the executive director for The Coalition to End Social Isolation and Loneliness (CESIL) in addition to the Foundation for Social Connection (F4SC). In this episode, Jillian discusses ways in which we can promote socially healthy communities, the influence of technology and the role it plays in the loneliness epidemic, as well as why conversations around social connection matter. Creating strong friendships as an adult is something I have been thinking about a lot lately, and it seems like many, many other people are to. In the last few years, there have been books, studies, articles, podcast episodes- you name it- all trying to understand adult friendship. This topic got particular attention in the wake of lockdown, when across the US, employees of all kinds who made the necessary switch to working from home, well, stayed home. I'm sure many of you have heard about the “epidemic of loneliness.”As owners of very small businesses where we are also often the one-and-only employee, solitude may not have been totally new for us when lockdown was put in place. Not to say small business owners are a necessarily lonely bunch, but I think many would agree that creating friendships and growing a community of peers can be more challenging outside of a big company or organization setting. That's part of the reason why I created my membership program, Making Good Happen, to create a space for like-minded small business owners to swap ideas, share hardship, and rejoice in each other's wins. I'm not usually a big New Years resolution gal, but this year I did set the goal of spending more quality time with people in my small business community, not only online but in person. But let's face it, getting the ball rolling can feel a little awkward. That's why I was so excited to chat with today's guest, Danielle Bayard Jackson. A certified friendship coach, Danielle teaches women how to make and maintain better friendships through research-based methodology. Since studying the ins and outs of female friendships, her teachings include how to solve common female friendship conflicts, creating connections with depth and closeness, and the impact of friendship on our physical, mental, and emotional health.MAKING GOOD SHOWNOTES:https://makinggoodpodcast.com/235CONNECT WITH ME ON INSTAGRAM:https://instagram.com/laurentildenGET 100 MARKETING PROMPTS (free!):https://makinggoodpodcast.com/100promptsStuck on what to say in our marketing? Meet Tyler Bjork, our season 2 storyteller for the I Know Lonely Project this month. Understanding the deep hurt that comes from bullying and feeling unseen, Tyler shares his story of loneliness. His story explains how where we feel seen, where we feel accepted and where we feel belonging are often the places we can be the most authentic. For him, that was spaces like theatre, choir, and performing arts and getting involved in Special Olympics. More and more people are moving cities. This hasn't always been the case. Historically, we were born in an area, raised in an area, raised a family in that area, and then retired in that area. But this has gotten much different in the modern travel era. Spirit Airlines will give you a ticket for less than what a date night at a steakhouse will cost. Corporations are moving employees from one big city to the other. Tiktok and Instagram solo travelers are inspiring others to pull the plug and grab their carry-on. This conversation is about building community after a move - because more than likely, you'll make a move. I speak with Haley Ingersoll, the founder of Pittsburgh Social Health and a community manager by trade. Haley and I have similar stories, moving from one city to the next and then being tasked with finding friends, missing our old ones, and then figuring out to meet people. She built Pittsburgh Social Health which allows transplants who are either returning to Pittsburgh or fresh to Pittsburgh to find community and build much needed social support. Things you can expect to hear are: innovative strategies and heartfelt efforts to knit the fabric of a supportive communitythe power of local eventsthe role of digital platforms in fostering connectionsthe importance of embracing cultural diversityhow to leverage personal experiences to drive community initiativesthe significance of understanding local cultureand how small actions like neighborhood walks can lead to profound social engagement.Connect with Haley: https://twitter.com/Hingersoll5https://www.linkedin.com/in/haley-ingersoll7/Learn about Pittsburgh Social Health:https://www.instagram.com/pghsocialhealth/Listen to her podcast:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/heirloomsA quick note - moving is hard. And we often underestimate how much value the people have in our life that we're moving away from. Make sure to put in as much work as you can before you move, researching the area, finding things you could go to, and then making a plan. Also - ask your current network if they know anyone where you're moving and then see if you can get a warm hand-off. Doing these things will help set you up much better than going blind. And I strongly encourage you do these things! An easy way to send me a message? Click the link here.Have you enjoyed the podcast? MSU's Health and Wellbeing (UHW) Division is conducting a university-wide health and wellbeing assessment that includes an anonymous survey. The purpose of this assessment is for UHW to gain a deeper understanding of issues impacting MSU students, faculty, and staff as it relates to physical health, mental health, and social wellbeing. The results of the survey will contribute to the development of a 5-year plan for MSU to equitably support Spartan health and wellbeing. Specifically, UHW will comprehensively assess: · The health of the student, staff, and faculty populations · Identify prevalent health trends and issues, and · Gather data essential for tailoring and enhancing support services, resource allocation, and policies to promote a culture of wellbeing on campus. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to complete the survey. The information shared will be kept confidential. The survey takes 8-10 minutes to complete. For additional information, visit: https://uhw.msu.edu/assessment. Discussing the assessment and survey on this episode of MSU Today are Dr. Norman Beauchamp, Jr, MD, MHS, MSU executive vice president for Health Sciences, executive sponsor of the sustainable health theme in the MSU Strategic Plan 2030, and co-chair of the MSU Health and Wellbeing Assessment; Dr. Alexis Travis, assistant provost and executive director of MSU University Health and Wellbeing; and Dr. Renee Canady, MPHI CEO and assistant professor at MSU's College of Human Medicine Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health. Conversation Highlights: (2:23) – “UHW is supporting a community where health and wellbeing is equitably woven into all aspects of campus life.” (2:58) – “The beauty of MPHI is that we are a living and breathing demonstration of governmental and academic innovation.” (3:44) – How does UHW define health and wellbeing? – “It's a complete sense of physical, mental, and social health and not just the absence of disease or infirmary.” (6:02) – Why is health and wellbeing a priority for students, faculty, and staff and how does it impact student success and staff and faculty success? (7:52) – Who should take the survey and what do you hope to learn from it? (9:02) – “This survey is about voice.” (11:55) – “MSU could have easily completed this project without us. The fact that they saw partnership as vitally important is what we do.” (13:02) – What will you do with the data compiled from the survey? (14:48) – How does the assessment fit into the sustainable health theme of MSU Strategic Plan 2030? (17:29) – “It's my hope that people will not only participate, but that they'll be better for having participated.” For additional information, please visit: https://uhw.msu.edu/assessment.Photo credit: Donna Hondorp.
