An estimated 6.5 million Americans over the age of 65 are living with Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's and Dementia are commonplace worldwide, in fact, Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. Alzheimer's disease is a type of brain disease, just as coronary artery disease is a type of heart disease. It is caused by damage to nerve cells (neurons) in the brain. Alzheimer's has personally touched me and my family since my father was diagnosed with it. I wanted to create a space for many who are affected by this, many who are caretakers, and parents to their kids. An estimated 6.2 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimers dementia in 2021, which breaks down to 1 in 9 people age 65 and older, and those numbers will increase substantially over the next few years as the population ages. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink and brain cells to die. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia — a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that affects a person's ability to function independently. On this episode of Free Thinking, Montel talks with an emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr Peter Rabins. Dr Rabins was the founding director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and the first holder of the Richman Family Chair in Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders. Where Medicine Meets Ministry: Dr. Sheri Talks Faith & Facts
In this episode we cover:How Pastor Jordan and her husband, Robert A. Jordan, M.D. (retired Pediatrician) blended their professions together to help heal and minister to the mind, body and soul for over 34 years. How one can take, what some would call, a devastating situation and find hope, joy and peace!Finding reality in Jeremiah 29:11... For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. It's never too late to attain your dreams or passion; but be willing to rewind the DVD of your mind to get you to where you want to be.The impact of being willing to give up something to get more!Blessings come in the wait. How you can use the gifts and talents you use on your job and turn them into an opportunity to bless others through a nonprofit avenue. How you can provide care for the mind, body and soul, caring for the indigent, the affluent and those in-between.How a devastating disease, like Alzheimer's, can present an opportunity to turn a "BOAD" (bitch of a disease), into a blessing. Rev. Jeanette B. Jordan, M.Div, CLC, is the Pastor of Journey to the Cross Ministries - a multi Denominational Church that was planted in September of 2009. A native of Chicago, Illinois she responded to God's call into the Ministry in February 1996 and was licensed by the Evangelical Church Alliance in April 1998, ordained August 12, 1999. She attended the Evangelical Church Alliance Bible Institute in Bradley, Illinois and was licensed in 1998 and ordained in 1999. She is a graduate of the McCormick Theological Seminary class of 2003 with an M.Div. Degree. Prior to becoming a Pastor, she worked hand in hand with her husband, Robert A. Jordan, M.D., Pediatrician. In 1982 she became the executive administrator of her husband's pediatric practice. They grew his practice to becoming one of the most well-known pediatric practices in the Chicago and South Suburbs communities, South Suburban Pediatrics. They provided care for the mind, body and soul, caring for the indigent, the affluent and those in-between. In 1995 they formed a non-profit entity, Far South Side Community Health Center, where they partnered with hospitals and community businesses to provide a one day back to school free physical exam including immunizations, dental exams, and school supplies. Together, they offered these services for over 15 years including providing free food baskets and clothing giveaways to the community during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. After having given his life to doing what he wanted most, Dr. Jordan had to retire from practice in 2017 because he was afflicted with, what she calls "BOAD" (bitch of a disease), Alzheimers/Dementia. She has become an educational volunteer with the Chicago Alzheimer's Association and has completed a course from Emory University on effective caregiving for those suffering this BOAD! Presently Dr. Jordan is in a Long-Term Care Facility being cared for by a team of caring, loving, dedicated caregivers who allow Pastor Jordan to continue to be lead caregiver!Dr. Jordan wrote a book that was published in 2017, "From Suspenders to Stethoscope- the Dr. Jordan Story" available through thehotreads.com. Featuring Primrose, Engaged Living Executive Director, John Wotring and Dan O'Brien, RN Primrose Engaged Living is a beacon of hope for how care could be delivered to those living with dementia. When I first learned about Primrose, and the leading edge work they are doing, I sent a couple emails to the Executive Director, and left a couple voicemails. It did not seem like they were very interested in talking with someone making a documentary, or podcast. Finally, we connected in real life at a Teepa Snow event in Santa Rosa, CA. The epicenter of medical cannabis, apparently. Medical cannabis experts Dr. Hergenrather (EP3) and Dr. Grob (EP4) introduced us to Primrose. Gary and Becky Beal (EP5) were a Primrose Family. Dr. Grob introduced us to Dan at The Medical Cannabis 2.0 Symposium produced by Home Instead Senior LIving Sonoma County and Hospice Services of St. Joseph's Hospital. And we finally met the Executive Director I had left messages for at a Teepa Snow event in Sonoma County. Meeting face to face and showing John our research book with all the studies that show that cannabis helps dementia and sharing our family story was our common ground. John agreed to let us visit Primrose and do an interview. The first ever interview Primrose has given discussing any aspect of their medical cannabis program, that began at the behest of a savvy hospice nurse. We talk about the Wotring family's personal story of why Primrose was born and how their medical cannabis program was developed in 2008. Despite cannabis being legal for medical use in California since 1996, and despite cannabis being legal for adult use in California since 2018, the stigma and Schedule I status of cannabis has made John reluctant to speak out publicly about how cannabis helps dementia, until now, for fear of being a target. Primrose is a beacon. It's a powerful episode, especially for anyone with a loved one in Assisted Living. Do you want to tell your story of how Cannabis Helps Dementia? Continuing last week's topic of planning and memory care, Eric Collett, Principal and CEO of "A Mind for All Seasons", gives our listeners some concrete steps they can take to improve their lives right now and better care for their cognitive health. This episode focuses on nutrition and how an improvement in diet can benefit our health right now as well as in the long term.
Eric Collett, Principal and CEO of "A Mind for All Seasons", joins Mark and Scott to discuss how planning is important for those facing Alzheimer's and dementia. Eric talks about the novel coronavirus and how discovering and coping with COVID-19 has similarities with discovering and coping with dementia. In both cases, preparation and information are the key to being proactive, rather than reactive.
The Double Bonus episode, Nrf2 - The Grocery List, has an overview of the health benefits and an extended list of foods that may help reduce inflammation by inhibiting the inflammatory pathways and increasing immune function and beneficial antioxidant production. The Bonus episode, Love Flavor & Fragrance, includes beneficial foods that help reduce inflammation - which may help reduce obsessive thinking and make forgiving - letting go - a little easier, by reducing excess calcium and NMDA receptor activity. Too much inflammation can lead to over-activity of NMDA receptors which can cause excess dopamine which may cause compulsive thoughts or behaviors, (willie 2014), and over the long term may be part of the degenerative problem leading to Alzheimer's Dementia. (Sil 2015) The Trailer, Love & Forgiveness, has a Goal for the day - love forgiveness, and a wish for a Happy Valentine's Day! and hope for everyone to have an enjoyable day, today and everyday! A funny quote by Mark Twain was also shared - “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.” - so funny, so sad, and so true - it turns out.
