The murder rate for native women and girls living on reservations in the U.S. is ten times higher than the national average for women, according to the Urban Indian Health Institute. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Justice's federal missing person database only logs a fraction of those cases. Our guest this week, who has investigated cases for indigenous girls from nine months old to women in their eighties, points out that this is part of a broader trend of data erasure. Abigail Echo-Hawk is the director of the Urban Indian Health Institute, which focuses on research and decolonizing data for urban American Indian and Alaska Native communities. She also serves as executive vice president of the Seattle Indian Health Board and is an enrolled citizen of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma. She joins WITHpod to discuss recovering the true story of her people prior to and post the Columbus encounter, the importance of rethinking misconceptions, health disparities in indigenous and Alaska native communities,  and the work that lies ahead to break down feelings of “invisibility.”**WITHpod Live Tour Special Announcement**Join us on the road.  Buy your tickets now at msnbc.com/withpodtour.

There's a powerful movement happening in farming today, and it's not a movement focused on flashy technology or producing food faster or at larger scales. Instead, it's a movement that centers on farmers reconnecting with their roots, reviving their ancestors' methods of growing food, healing their communities, and ultimately fighting climate change. In her new book, Healing Grounds, Liz Carlisle shared the stories of Indigenous, Black, Latinx, and Asian American farmers who are restoring native prairies, nurturing beneficial fungi, and enriching soil health to feed their communities and revitalize cultural ties to the land. One woman learned her tribe's history to help bring back the buffalo. Another preserved forest that was purchased by her great-great-uncle, who was among the first wave of African Americans to buy land. Others have rejected monoculture to grow corn, beans, and squash the way farmers in Mexico have done for centuries. Through techniques long suppressed by the industrial food system, they steadily stitch ecosystems back together and repair the natural carbon cycle. This is true regenerative agriculture, Carlisle explained – not merely a set of technical tricks for storing CO2 in the ground, but a holistic approach that values diversity in plants and people. But this kind of regenerative farming doesn't come easily – our nation's agricultural history is marked by discrimination and displacement. Restoration, repair, and healing can only come from dismantling the power structures that have blocked many farmers of color from owning land or building wealth. Though the task is immense, it holds great promise and hope: that by coming together to restore farmlands, we can not only heal our planet, we can heal our communities and ourselves. Liz Carlisle is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Studies Program at UC Santa Barbara, where she teaches courses on food and farming. Born and raised in Montana, she got hooked on agriculture while working as an aide to organic farmer and U.S. Senator Jon Tester, which led to a decade of research and writing collaborations with farmers in her home state. She has written three books about regenerative farming and agroecology: Lentil Underground (2015), Grain by Grain (2019, with co-author Bob Quinn), and most recently, Healing Grounds: Climate, Justice, and the Deep Roots of Regenerative Farming (2022). Prior to her career as a writer and academic, she spent several years touring rural America as a country singer. Latrice Tatsey (In-niisk-ka-mah-kii) is an ecologist and advocate for tribally-directed bison restoration who remains active in her family's cattle ranching operation at Blackfeet Nation in northwest Montana. Her research focuses on organic matter and carbon in soil, and specifically, the benefits to soil from the reintroduction of bison (iin-ni) to their traditional grazing landscapes on the Blackfeet Reservation. Latrice is currently completing her master's degree in Land Resources and Environmental Sciences at Montana State University and she serves as a research fellow with the Piikani Lodge Health Institute and the Wildlife Conservation Society. Hillel Echo-Hawk (she/her; Pawnee and Athabaskan) is an Indigenous chef, caterer, and speaker born and raised in the interior of Alaska around the Athabaskan village of Mentasta –– home to the matriarchal chief and subsistence rights activist, Katie John. Watching John and other Indigenous Peoples' fight for food sovereignty, as well as seeing her mother strive to make healthy, home-cooked meals for her and her six siblings, gave Hillel a unique perspective on diet and wellness. Echo-Hawk is the owner of Birch Basket, her food and work has been featured in James Beard, Bon Appetit, Eater, Huffpost, National Geographic, PBS, Vogue, The Seattle Times, and many, many more. We’re joined by Crystal Echo Hawk, founder and CEO of IllumiNative, a research-driven initiative created and led by Natives that is challenging negative narratives and supporting accurate and authentic portrayals of Native communities in pop culture. IllumiNative builds on Echo Hawk’s massive research project, Reclaiming Native Truth, which laid bare the shocking reality that nearly 80% of Americans (broadly defined) know little to nothing about Native peoples or aren’t even sure they even still exist, and the real-life consequences this “vanishing” narrative continues to have on Native populations. Fortunately, amid the trial and tragedy of 2020 (including the disproportionate impact of COVID on the Navajo Nation), there have been remarkable gains for Native peoples, from the ongoing power rooted in the protests at Standing Rock to the shutdown of the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Washington Football Team name change. We see media promise in the first Indigenous Filmmakers Lounge at Sundance in January to Peabody Award-winning Molly of Denali and a host of upcoming shows on various networks, Crystal is cautiously optimistic about the increasing visibility of Native Americans.Visit the episode page for the full transcript of this conversation! Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:See full panel from the January 2020 Indigenous filmmakers lounge at SundanceMore about the Sundance Indigenous Program (deadline for upcoming Merata Mita Fellowship program is 10/26/20)June 2020 update from the Sundance Indigenous ProgramMore about Bird Runningwater, Director of Sundance Institute’s Indigenous ProgramDelay of CARES Act funds to Native American tribesFurther delays to Alaska nativesReport on federal COVID-19 response in Indian CountryHistory of Native American vulnerability to pandemicsA Brief History of the American Indian Movement in MinneapolisLocal response of AIM in the wake of George Floyd protestsHistory of AIM's American Indian Patrol responding to police brutalityLong history of native organizing against police misconduct in Minneapolis2011 killing of a Native American man by Derek ChauvinNDN Collective Calls for Closure of Mount Rushmore and for the Black Hills to be Returned to the LakotaWhy McGirt v. Listen to the founder share her story of realizing why a Native Breastfeeding Week and movement are needed, and how she is working with her community to create ceremonies and rituals to honor and heal families. Breastfeeding, as a "First Medicine," is considered vital to this decolonization practice. "Native Breastfeeding is an act of defiance to the colonial systems and their imposed “norms” as well as a resilience of culture and body sovereignty, no matter the length of your experience. In decolonizing practices of motherhood such as breastfeeding, we can promote food sovereignty, body sovereignty, and the healing of the next generation. In decolonizing feeding practices, we follow the needs of our children." JASHA LYONS ECHO-HAWK

Episode 3 - Forgiveness

Live From Love

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2018 12:43

We all know that we SHOULD forgive, but sometimes we don't know how.  When it's something big and the pain is too great, how do we move past it and forgive?   Show Summary   Today I would like to talk to you about forgiveness. And not just that you SHOULD forgive, but how you actually do that.   Forgiveness is key to having a happy marriage.  Our spouses are far from perfect, and as their spouse we get a front row seat too all of their bad habits and behaviors.  Things that we may once have found endearing can grate on our nerves if we let it.  But lets remember…we LOVE them.  We do.  So we can forgive them of those little annoying daily things that happen over and over and over and over….   But what about when its a big thing?  How do we forgive when trust has been broken.  When promises are made and broken time and time again.  When we have been betrayed.     This is what is hard.  Right?   When someone does something that you're feeling hurt by, it can be painful, but it is nothing more than a thought or belief and a feeling that you carry around.  You may feel anger, frustration, resentment, fear, and maybe even hatred because of this belief that they’ve done something wrong and to hurt you.   So, rather than blaming your spouse for how you are feeling, take responsibility for your feelings.  And its ok to feel hurt… but realize that it is choice based on your beliefs about their actions.  And rather than hold on to that pain and hurt, you can choose to think better thoughts about yourself and them about the situation.  and THAT is the key to forgive them.   When we forgive others, its not for their benefit, its for ours.  We lift a burden off ourselves we forgive.  When we change our beliefs about what their behavior means for us, then we can forgive them and let that burden go.  Now it may make them feel better when we forgive them.  But we can forgive someone without them ever knowing that they’ve wronged us or ever asking to forgive them.  But them feeling better is about their thoughts about the situation, not us actually forgiving them.     Forgiveness can take work.  But if we desire to forgive and work for it, it is possible.   So let’s bring up a scenario -    So what if your spouse is unfaithful to you. The pain comes from beliefs such as:   He shouldn’t have done that He doesn’t love me He wouldn’t have done this if I were a better wife What if he leaves me and starts a new better life with her?   We BELIEVE those thoughts...   And with those beliefs you have feelings such as    pain anger resentment frustration fear   When you have those feelings, how are you showing up in your marriage?  Your probably showing up in one of two ways   You are pulling away Or you are attacking   Neither is great.  And when you do this, your relationship will probably deteriorate further which reinforces your beliefs….   When we act out of anger, fear, and resentment we are never acting as our best self.  Our best self comes when we act from love.   But if you can work to slowly change those beliefs to   I’m not ok with what he did, but I still love him and we will get through this OR I’m not ok with what he did, I still love him, but I’m not going to choose to stay OR What he did was choices he made because of something inside of him, it has nothing to with me.  I am enough.   Doesn’t that feel better.  With thoughts like that it will be much easier to forgive him, because you are coming from a place of love.  Forgiveness brings strength and peace.  It softens our heart and opens a pathway to healing and to rebuilding trust.   Just because you forgive someone doesn’t mean you condone the behavior.  It also doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences for that behavior.  And, it doesn’t mean you have to stay with them.  But  it feels much better to make those decisions in peace and love (love for your spouse and love for yourself) than out of anger and resentment?   I was married to my first husband for more than 13 years.  We had three children together.  And before I divorced him, I went through the 5 steps I discussed in Episode 1.  That is how I got a place of peace before I decided to end the marriage.  But after we were divorced I really felt like I needed to forgive him if we were going to move on to a place of peace and be able to co-parent our children together.  And, with the Lord’s help, I do feel like I have completely forgiven him.  I was able to look at the things that were hurting him that made him act the way he did and have compassion for that.  And while I am sad that our marriage had to end, I feel really good about where we are now.  We have a pretty good relationship.  We co-parent really well.  Our children are happy and well-adjusted.  And I look at where I am now in my life - I have a wonderful marriage with my now husband, Kevin, and I know that I wouldn’t be near as happy if I hadn’t been able to forgive and move through the hurt.   Larry J. Echo Hawk, who is a General Authority in our church said “As we forgive, the Savior will strengthen us and His power and joy will flow into our lives.”   I truly believe that we get an added measure of the spirit when we choose to be obedient and forgive.  When we use the atonement to help us forgive, it invites the Savior to be with us on the journey and we are able to give Him the hurt. And give Him the parts we can’t handle.  He is able to help us forgive, to move on, to be happy, to be at peace.   Now… just as it is important to forgive others, it is just as important to forgive ourselves.  We need to have compassion on ourselves.  Be kind.  Realize that we are human.  We make mistakes.  That is the nature of our experience here on this earth.  So when you make mistakes…think compassionate thoughts and forgive yourself.  You deserve it too!  When I was going through the process of forgiving my ex-husband, I also had to take a look at the things I had done that had contributed to the demise of our marriage and forgive myself for those.   I love the quote “God sees our imperfection and shortcomings, but He also sees beyond them.”  See beyond them in yourself.  See beyond the shortcomings in your spouse.  Live from love.   If you are having a hard time, forgiving someone in your life, sign up for my free mini-coaching session and I’d love to help you work through it.   Have a fabulous week my friends, we will see you next time….

Walter Echo-Hawk is a Native American attorney, tribal judge, author, activist, and law professor.  He represents Indian tribes on important legal issues, such as treaty rights, water rights, religious freedom, prisoner rights, and repatriation rights. His career spans the pivotal years when Indian tribes reclaimed their land, sovereignty, and pride in a stride toward freedom. As a Native American rights attorney since 1973, Walter worked at the epicenter of a great social movement alongside visionary tribal leaders, visited tribes in indigenous habitats throughout North America, and was instrumental in the passage of landmark laws—such as, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (1990) and the American Indian Religious Freedom Act Amendments (1994). He litigated in many of the epic struggles and has written extensively about the rise of modern Indian nations as a Native American author with first-hand experience, most recently in his new groundbreaking book, In the Courts of the Conqueror: The 10 Worst Indian Law Cases Ever Decided (2010). Walter speaks extensively and appears in film and radio to educate the American public about tribal life, culture, and indigenous justice. He is currently on a national book tour for his new book, and appeared in "The Development of NAGPRA," a new film about the Native American repatriation movement produced by the National Park Service in 2010, and several national radio programs. Always thought-provoking, inspirational, and sometimes provocative, he explains complex issues in a professional, but easily-understood style. www.walterechohawk.com
