The latest cuts in the US Government have been described as a “total farce”. The Trump Administration has reversed the firings of hundreds of employees at the National Nuclear Security Administration, the department tasked with working on the nation's nuclear weapons programs. The cuts were part of a DOGE purge across the Department of Energy. US Correspondent Richard Arnold told Mike Hosking they attempted to walk back the sackings and rehire the workers, but were unable to contact many of them since they'd been cut out of the email network. From the Schrecksee lake in the Allgäu region of Germany to Hallstatt in Austria or Villnöss in Italy: the natural environment, local culture and geographically diverse habitats are the major attractions of mountain areas. In many destinations, tourist numbers are growing rapidly, which in turn puts pressure on local infrastructures, the environment and the population. We have dedicated our fourth podcast episode to the important topic of carrying capacities in mountain tourism. The term “carrying capacity” describes the number of tourists that a destination can manage. It is used in several disciplines and in everyday language. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Nuclear safety/security: Why doesn't EA prioritize it more?, published by Rockwell on August 31, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I'm dissatisfied with my explanation of why there is not more attention from EAs and EA funders on nuclear safety and security, especially relative to e.g. AI safety and biosecurity. This has come up a lot recently, especially after the release of Oppenheimer. I'm worried I'm not capturing the current state of affairs accurately and consequently not facilitating fully contextualized dialogue. What is your best short explanation? (To be clear, I know many EAs and EA funders are working on nuclear safety and security, so this is more so a question of resource allocation, rather than inclusion in the broader EA cause portfolio.) Taking the car not only leads to traffic chaos but we also leave a huge carbon footprint. We can reduce both by travelling with public transport. Sometimes, this can be challenging for the passengers, especially when it comes to the famous last kilometer of the journey. Last year, Louis Didelle started a project called L'Escarpade in the French alpine town Grenoble. He says: “Our principal objective was to raise awareness on soft mobilities and to show, that access to mountains doesn't have to be by car only.” It's a community project to redefine access to the mountains and offer a sustainable alternative to the car with a sporty approach. Our second interview partner for this podcast is Antoine Pin, head manager of Protect our Winters France. He talks about the availability of information on public transportation in the Alps and gives recommendations on how to become active yourself. From the alpine plateau to the wild river in the mountains: How can visitor flows be managed in a meaningful way? What are the problems involved? How and by whom could they be solved? Four pilot regions sought answers to these questions in the speciAlps 2 project. The current CIPRA podcast reports. Where a few decades ago there were still lonely valleys with mystical waterfalls and crystal-clear mountain lakes, today cars are jammed on access roads and visitors get in each other's way looking for the next insider tip. In some areas of the Alps, pictures like these are unfortunately part of everyday life. Four pilot regions in the Alps have set themselves the goal of changing this: The Tiroler Lech Nature Park/A, the Kamnik and Savinja Alps/SL, the mountaineering village of Balme/I and Bad Reichenhall/D. They developed measures to manage the growing number of visitors. In the CIPRA podcast the coordinators of the pilot regions talk about problems and approaches to solving them. They talk about what politics, tourism, regional development and other decision-makers can do to ensure that nature and visitors benefit equally. This current episode of the CIPRA podcast was produced by the Alliance in the Alps network of municipalities. What can visitors themselves do to protect sensitive natural areas? This was the subject of the CIPRA podcast episode "How to protect the Alps with your behaviour": https://soundcloud.com/cipra_international/specialps2-code-of-conduct Both podcasts were produced as part of the speciAlps 2 project on visitor management. CIPRA International coordinated the project together with the Alliance in the Alps network of municipalities with financial support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). Coffee with Samso Episode 161 is all about uranium. Orpheus Minerals Limited (ASX: ORP) is currently completing their Initial Public Offer which will close on the 25th November 2022.   Simon Mitchell , the Managing Director of Orpheus Minerals Limited (ASX: ORP) shares his thoughts on a sector that rarely makes an appearance in recent media coverage. Simon has extensive experience in the uranium sector and he gives a great summary of why Orpheus is on a path that is now just getting some attention.   Uranium has been a dirty word for a while and the last major market interest of substance was as far back as 2006. There was some interest a couple of years back but that was very short lived.   In this episode we focused on the Orpheus projects and what the market sentiment will be for uranium. We had a discussion of the two major styles uranium geology. This is a great episode for new investors to get some sort of an understanding on the roll-front and unconformity style uranium deposits.   There was a discussion on the market and why the future for uranium looks bright. Orpheus has also selected project in two Australian states that have good uranium mining policies. Those that are looking for exposure in this sector should give Orpheus minerals a good looking as they have two of the main points I always look for in a company, a good project and an even better management.   Check out the management team and you will find that there is a great wealth of experience in uranium space. This is very rare. There are not many uranium exploration companies that have a stable of uranium experience like Orpheus Minerals Limited.   Chapters   00:00 Start 00:20 Introduction 01:23 Introduction to Simon Mitchell 02:38 Why Australia for Uranium? 03:37 Australian Uranium Province 05:47 The Orpheus Paleo-Channel Projects 06:15 The Orpheus Northern Territory Projects 06:43 The Frome Project 07:53 The Two major Styles of Uranium Geology 08:56 The Paleo-Channel / Roll-Front Uranium Style 10:51 Do Paleo-Channel Uranium Projects occur together? 12:53 The Cooking Pot - Mineral System of Uranium Mineralisation 13:56 Phosphate as a Uranium Pathfinder Mineral 15:17 The Unconformity Uranium Geology 20:08 Geological Unconformity Explained 21:06 The Covid Unconformity Example 21:25 Why is Uranium going to be in Focus? 26:33 Where is the Uranium Discussion Now? 27:44 Whats the Global Nuclear Point of View? 32:34 What is the progress of Nuclear Safety? 34:46 Great Advancement of Safety in the Nuclear sector. 37:09 The Orpheus IPO Progress 38:04 Key takeaway from Simon Mitchell 38:39 Key management of Orpheus Minerals Limited 40:26 Conclusion

Humanity's survival is at increasing risk of a global catastrophic nuclear event because the dominant strategy for preventing the use of nuclear weapons has not adapted to today's threats. This talk with Joan Rohlfing and Carl Robichaud explores pathways to a better, safer nuclear future, one where humanity's existence and flourishing no longer hangs in the balance, and one that relies on an effective system for managing nuclear technology into the long future – a new nuclear paradigm -- that can't cause a civilizational catastrophe if it fails.  Finally, it makes the case for why the EA community should prioritize reducing global catastrophic nuclear risks and describes how it can contribute to safeguarding the long-term future. This talk was taken from EA Global: London 2021. This is: Some AI Governance Research Ideas, published by MarkusAnderljung, Alexis Carlier on the AI Alignment Forum. Compiled by Markus Anderljung and Alexis Carlier Junior researchers are often wondering what they should work on. To potentially help, we asked people at the Centre for the Governance of AI for research ideas related to longtermist AI governance. The compiled ideas are developed to varying degrees, including not just questions, but also some concrete research approaches, arguments, and thoughts on why the questions matter. They differ in scope: while some could be explored over a few months, others could be a productive use of a PhD or several years of research. We do not make strong claims about these questions, e.g. that they are the absolute top priority at current margins. Each idea only represents the views of the person who wrote it. The ideas aren't necessarily original. Where we think someone is already working on or has done thinking about the topic before, we've tried to point to them in the text and reach out to them before publishing this post. Saralyn Thomas is a Senior Consultant for Nuclear Safety working for Abbott Risk Consulting (ARC) in Newbury and Vice-Chair of the Nuclear Institute's Young Generation Network looking after International Liaison, including COP-26. Saralyn lives just outside Oxford and in her free time likes to bake and share the cakes that she's baked! She went to Amman Valley School in Carmarthenshire South Wales and was part of the school choir and chemistry club. She really loved school and got stuck into everything taking an extra-curricular GCSE in Russian during her A-levels! – she got in trouble with her mother for this at the time as she was worried she was taking on too much work. Saralyn then went to study Physics at the University of Bristol which she struggled with and found it was a big jump from school. She then went on to do a masters in Nuclear Science and Technology at Manchester and during that time she did a placement at NNL which took her into their laboratory – this was where she realised her passion for nuclear and enjoyed it a lot more than her university degree. Saralyn then took a role in Orano in nuclear safety as a Safety Assessor. After a couple years of working at Orano, she picked up three hats – one in safety cases, one as an Account Manager, and one in waste management using a process for making decisions. She recently joined Abbott Risk Consulting undertaking HAZIDs and safety assurance for defence as she knew this was a good place to work in Safety and liked the good connection with the YGN. Saralyn is also Vice chair of the YGN which she really loves – some of her best memories over the last 5 years have been at YGN and she has made friendships and relationships for life in being a part of it.
