How can we bring wisdom to those with power and power to those with wisdom?  If we were to step into elder hood and bring the best of ourselves to the table, could we create governance structures that would help to heal our cultural divides, create equity and guide is wisely through the coming crisis? Jenny Grettve believes we can and has set up a global council to make this happen.  Jenny is a good friend of the podcast. She joined us in episode #228 to talk about designing and building a school along Doughnut economic lines and then again in episode #249 to talk about the evolution of a Mothering Economy based on the values of compassion and care for future generations.  Jenny is an author, philosopher, systems thinker and designer, author of several books, most recently the Mothering Economy that we talked about the last time we met. Then, she was leading WhenWhen, a new feminist design agency that creates system demonstrators to test ideas generated by global researchers working with the climate crisis and sustainable life.  She was still working there last November when Donald Trump managed to take the US Presidency again. Amidst all the shock and horror of that moment, I saw a post Jenny put up on LinkedIn, proposing the creation of a Global Council of Women as a way to bring forward the values that our world needs at this moment of total transformation.  I signed up on the spot and then asked Jenny to come and talk to us about it, so that the idea might spread in the Accidental Gods spheres.  And then as I was doing the reading for this episode, I found that Jenny had started the year in a new post - that she is now Head of Transformation at a European Council funded organisation called EIT - that's European Innovation and Technology - Culture and Creativity.  Which means Jenny is now taking the wisdom of creativity right into the heart of the bureaucracy that sustains the super organism, at least in the EU.  So here we are, considering the nature of wisdom and elder hood, how we might overcome the gender divides that so assail us in service to life - and how to bring creative ideas deep into the heart of machine.  Please know that the Council is not only for women - the first meeting is exploring whole, healthy masculinity and how it can be prioritised in this world. Which feels like such an integral part of our thinking now.  So please do join - the link is below.  Women Council https://www.womencouncil.world/Jenny Grettve https://www.jennygrettve.com/EIT Culture and Creativity https://eit-culture-creativity.eu/Jenny on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennygrettve/EIT Culture and Creativity on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/eit-culture-creativity/Jenny in Episode 228 https://accidentalgods.life/evolving-education-building-a-doughnut-school-with-jenny-grettve-of-whenwhen/Jenny in Episode 249 https://accidentalgods.life/finding-the-courage-to-care-ways-to-build-a-mothering-economy-with-author-jenny-grettve/

There is no life, no liberty and no property without a stable climate and their government, our government should not be allowed to continue to contribute to this problem.” Elizabeth Rusch, author of The 21. This book dives into the ongoing landmark federal climate change lawsuit Juliana versus the United States of America. She introduces us to the 21 young people who came from different states to sue the US government. They have accused the federal government of denying them their constitutional right to life and liberty by not acting to address the causes of climate change. Elizabeth sat down with us to tell stories from the book. You'll hear about young people courageously stepping up in a big way and the importance of this historic case. “Not only should more people pay attention to the case, we believe anyone reading Elizabeth's book will be inspired to do great things.” -Horace Mo Follow Elizabeth Rusch on X. If you don't use it, you lose it. At least, that's how the old aphorism goes. It refers to the idea that something which does not get utilised regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. For example, a hobby that you haven't done for a few years, like playing the trumpet. You might find yourself a bit rusty the next time you pick one up – or maybe you've forgotten altogether! Muscles are another example. They will waste away without use. In order to counteract this, people take regular exercise to keep their skills sharp. Well, what about the brain? As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline. In some cases this can lead to certain mental conditions such as dementia, which I'm sure you will agree, no one wants. However, all is not lost because these days it's relatively easy to train your brain. Smartphones and apps have put programmes into our hands that can test, maintain and even augment our memories, mathematical skills, logic skills and a raft of other mental abilities. With a little practice every day, we can keep our brains nice and sharp, right? According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even though many people thought it was important to play online games, such as puzzles and mind games, which are designed to improve brain health, the evidence of the benefits was “weak to non-existent”. Playing a ‘brain game' may lead to improvements in game performance, but this has yet to show a convincing result in people's daily cognitive abilities. In other words, doing hundreds of sudoku puzzles might make you a sudoku wizard, but it doesn't necessarily improve your ability to do your accounting. It's not all doom and gloom though. There are other ways to stimulate the old grey matter. It recommends seeking out new activities that challenge the way you think and are socially engaging, while leading to a healthy lifestyle. Among their suggestions are practising tai chi, taking photography classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering. There's more good news, too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK has said that brain decline is not inevitable. As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention”, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, make haste, get out there and try something new. Maybe it's time to try that hobby you've always wanted to do. And as for me? I'm off to learn the piano. 词汇表aphorism 格言utilise 利用,使用a state of decline 退化、衰退的状态rusty (因长期不去做而)生疏的altogether 彻底地,全部地waste away 逐渐衰退counteract 对抗,抵消keep sharp 保持(技术)熟练;保持(头脑)敏锐augment 增强、加强a raft of 许多,大量non-existent 不存在的cognitive 认知的wizard 能手,“达人”doom and gloom 前景悲观,一片黯淡stimulate 促进(身体某部位的)功能grey matter “灰质”,头脑inevitable 不可避免的make haste (旧式说法)快点

Kay Lindahl -- The Sacred Art of Listening

“There is a lot of talking going on in the world right now. There is not a whole lot of listening. If we switched it around – more listening and less talking – we would see miracles.” – Kay Lindahl In a social zeitgeist that emphasizes talking, verbalizing, and presenting one’s self, Kay Lindahl has steadfastly worked to reverse this equation: since the early 1990s, she has been teaching people how to listen – a composite form of inner and outer listening with a deeply spiritual grain. Kay’s mission began around 1991 when she founded The Alliance for Spiritual Community (ASC), a grassroots interfaith organization creating dialogue among people of diverse faiths, cultures, and spiritual practices. Having recently relocated to a new community with her husband, she started ASC from their living room to bring a “strong spiritual presence” to her new community. Her decade-long work with ASC underscored for her that building peace and diversity in a true sense requires a reformation in how we communicate – beyond words, and through channels of our attention. And so unfolded the next chapter of her journey: supporting listening as a critical exercise not only across diverse faith, cultural, and other traditions but also as a sacred art in itself – a spiritual exercise that an individual undertakes in the interior of their being. To Kay, the inner and outer pieces of listening incorporate each other into what she terms an embodied “listening presence”. This kind of listening is a multi-dimensional practice that operates through listening to one’s body, soul, silence, life, heart, mind, emotions, and the earth. “Listening encompasses more than words,” she says. “It is a way of being in the world.” To Kay, sacred listening is an interface, a conduit between community and faith in its diverse forms. For the past twenty-four years, Kay has been working on stretching the collective and individual imagination about “listening” – what it offers when viewed as a spiritual art form, how it might re-shape community dialogue, and how best people might “prepare” to listen. This has been her marching orders, her living manifesto. In 1997, she started The Listening Center (TLC). She conducts workshops and retreats around the world on the art form of listening for religious, spiritual, community, campus, and business groups. Kay has authored several books including The Sacred Art of Listening, Practicing the Sacred Art of Listening and How Does God Listen?  The premise of her work and TLC is that listening is a creative force. It is at the heart of transforming relationships. Listening requires practice and teaching. But it goes beyond the mechanics and modalities. Listening is a form of “beingness” for Kay, an attuning with the present moment that arrives when space is prepared for it. This “listening presence” significantly differs from effective and performative types of listening – responsible, inter-cultural, productive, interdisciplinary types. Spiritual listening emerges from an inward-facing stillness and attentiveness that creates space from which we can listen across our differences. Listening is a choice. When one chooses to listen deeply, it sets in motion a recognition of the life force of another, and we find ourselves able to understand even those opining differently. Born into a community-oriented family of Scandinavian immigrants, Kay’s hands-on exposure to paying attention to and heeding the calls of the world outside of her began from within her family. As a child she witnessed her father in community leadership roles in fraternal organizations, and later serving on the city council in Jamestown, New York. He also hosted a weekly radio program in Swedish, serving the local immigrant population. The founding elements of her work and way of life lay also in her deep spiritual grounding. “Ever since I was a little girl I have had this sense of knowing. I felt connected to something I couldn’t describe.” The essence of her origin – a predisposition to serving and leading community – kept reappearing in myriad forms throughout her adult life. Her own journey has been a testament to her listening to the opportunities that showed up in her non-linear path. It took her from the role of a registered nurse, to running her own financial consultancy for seventeen years, to being a regional leader for La League Leche. In 1993 she attended the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago and heard theologian Hans Kung's statement – that there will be no peace among nations until there is peace among religions. She realized that there will be no peace among religions until there's dialogue among religions and that listening – to one another and to Source – is a key component of building a world of peace and harmony. A long-time member of the Episcopal Church, Kay became an ordained interfaith minister and a board member of The Interfaith Observer, the Rumi Educational Center, and Women of Spirituality and Faith (to bring more female voices into the spiritual community). She is a past Ambassador for the Parliament of the World's Religions, a past (founding) trustee of the Global Council for the United Religions Initiative, and Past Chair of the North American Interfaith Network. She also is a member of the Forge Guild for Spiritual Leaders and The International Listening Association. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic is expanding her own understanding and practice of spiritual listening. The isolation and enhanced need for connection put the sacredness of listening in a unique context for Kay. She sees the inability to gather in person as an extension of the ongoing need for “finding ways to communicate differently”. Even while recognizing the hardships of the pandemic, she views this struggle as a fountainhead of opportunity for “learning to tune in to the hive – where we connect telepathically, without depending on time and space”. This is “a season of not knowing” -- when the answer to so many questions is I don’t know. She believes new grounds are opening to practice being present in the moment, to listen with patience. Kay lives in Long Beach, California, and enjoys keeping in touch with her seven children and ten grandchildren. Please join us in conversation with this gifted practitioner of the creative force of listening.

In church life, there seems to be two groups of people. There's the group who seem to hear from God really easily… God's speaking about this; God's speaking about that. It's like God is speaking every day! Then there's another group who struggle to hear God's voice. They heard God speak five years ago and there's been silence ever since.  Which group do you fall into?  Is there anything we can do to help those who struggle to hear God's voice? On this episode, we talk about hearing God's voice for those it find it difficult and we have the perfect guest to learn from. Ps. Pernille Liland is a prophet, teacher, author, business leader, wife and mother from Denmark. She has many years of ministry experience and prophetic expertise to share. Pernille distinguishes between two types of experiences - a distinct voice that interrupts or overrides your thoughts that appears to come on God's initiative, and a second type of experience that occurs when we take the initiative. We do this by creating space to connect with God by actively engaging with the Spirit through our imagination. During the process, we take time to wait on the Spirit and develop our spiritual senses, including hearing, smell, taste, touch and feeling. We become aware of our thoughts, meditate on Jesus and allow the Spirit to take it from there.  Some of us may have questions about using our imagination in the process of hearing God, but all this means is that we are engaging the Spirit in the realm of our minds. Where our spirit meets with God, revelation comes. Pernille takes time to break down the process simply and clearly, making it accessible to everyone. She reiterates how personal God is and how the gift of the Spirit is for everyone, not just a prophet, priest, pastor or pope. We can all hear the Spirit for ourselves! Reference Gregory A. With the numerous efforts currently focused on educating the public about dementia, from clinical programs to research to podcasts (like this one), how much is stigma surrounding cognitive decline affecting public understanding? On today's podcast, Sarah Lock, Senior Vice President for Policy for AARP, discusses just that. This year, the AARP published a report on a survey focused on how the general American population and particular subgroups perceive dementia and dementia diagnoses. The survey found that the general public and health care professionals have many misperceptions about dementia, including overestimations about their likelihood to develop dementia and the shame they might feel about a diagnosis. Describing the contrasting perceptions between clinicians and the public and the impacts of stigma on dementia policy, Lock details the ways this survey will allow the AARP to build on their existing programs about brain health to better educate the public about dementia and the ways it affects a person's life. Guest: Sarah Lenz Lock, Senior Vice President for Policy, AARP, Executive Director of the Global Council on Brain Health Episode Topics: 1:48 - Can you share what went into making the survey and who completed them? 5:05 - What did the survey find? How do people think about their own risk? 7:14 - Can you speak about those key findings surrounding stigma and dementia? 9:43 - What do you make of the stigma's connection to the fear of not being able to drive anymore? 12:48 - What key findings did you find about the clinicians who completed the survey? 15:32 - One finding from the survey showed that healthcare providers overestimated the shame and embarrassment that a person would experience with a diagnosis. What were other perceptions that clinicians overestimated in the survey? 17:20 - From a policy perspective, does the United States need to change its recommendations surrounding dementia screenings? 20:01 - Could you share the true benefits of early diagnoses, based on the survey and what you see within the AARP? 21:21 - Did the survey find any differences in the perceptions among different racial groups? 23:28 - How do you define brain health? What is the AARP doing to spread information about brain health? Show Notes: Learn more about Sarah Lock and her work at her bio on the AARP website. #055 - Many older adults decide to stop drinking as they get older (YAY!)There's an ageist idea circling around society, however,  that suggests that "older adults can't change". This idea is not only false, it's incredibly harmful to older adults who may just believe this erroneous statement and never get the help they need. Some researchers and mental health and aging groups talk about the invisibility of alcohol use among older adults, explaining that even though the number of older adults with alcohol problems is on the rise, alcohol use disorders are too often unrecognized and untreated. Some reasons for this have to do with symptoms of problematic drinking often masquerading as other health conditions in older adults like diabetes, dementia, and depression. To complicate matters, many older adults don't seek professional help for what they often consider a "private matter" and many family members and friends of older adults with alcohol problems at some point stop trying to convince their older loved one that the alcohol use can be treated. Join me in making the invisible visible by learning the facts about aging and alcohol use and what you can do to help.  Here's what you'll learn:The rates of alcohol use among older adults3 Reasons why talking about alcohol use in older adults is importantWhat may trigger older adults more vulnerable to begin using alcohol or use more alcohol than they used to?The warning signs of alcohol use in older adults10 questions to consider if it might be time to talk with your doctor about cutting back on drinkingHow much alcohol is safe for older adults? Today on Sojourner Truth: On Friday, January 22, a UN treaty outlawing nuclear weapons went into effect, having been ratified by over 50 countries. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which was adopted in 2017, prohibits countries from producing, testing, acquiring, possessing or stockpiling nuclear weapons. The Treaty also outlaws transferring weapons and forbids countries from permitting any nuclear explosive device to be stationed, installed or deployed within their borders. It sets the goal of achieving a nuclear-weapon-free world, saying it would serve both national and collective security interests. Any use of nuclear weapons, it adds, would be contrary to the rules of international law for armed conflict. The Treaty is certainly groundbreaking. However, the United States and other major nuclear powers have not signed it. Some are protesting in the U.S. to press the Biden administration to sign the treaty. Our guest is Alice Slater, who serves on the Board of World Beyond War, is the UN NGO Representative of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and a member of the Global Council of Abolition 2000. She serves on the Board of Nuclear Ban U.S. and works with the NYC Working Group for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) in the Nobel Prize winning campaign to promote the newly passed treaty to ban the bomb. Indigenous nations in the United States hard-hit by COVID-19 are alarmed by the impact on their nations in terms of loss of life and also the threat to their culture, including maintaining their traditional languages. Our guest is Ethel Branch, the former Attorney General for Navajo Nation and founder of the Navajo and Hopi Families COVID-19 relief fund. Also, on Tuesday, January 26, the people of India celebrate Republic Day. The holiday honors the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950, formally turning India into an independent republic. This was a major development for the people of India, who had suffered from hundreds of years of colonization under the British. Today, 71 years later, the people of India are still fighting for true freedom. Today, on the 71st anniversary of Republic Day, tens of thousands of protesting farmers plan to drive into India's capital city of Delhi on tractors. Many of them are women, who account for 70 percent of agricultural work, but are paid half as much as men. The farmers are protesting against agriculture reform laws passed by Parliament last September 2020. They are also demanding pay equity for women farmers and all agricultural workers. Our guest is London-based Didi Rossi, a member of Global Women's Strike, an international network campaigning for a living wage for mothers and other carers.

Out of the tumultuous United Methodist General Conference of 2016 was birthed a renewal movement within the UMC called the Wesleyan Covenant Association.  The WCA was founded on the principle of scriptural authority and traditional Wesleyan theology in response to the push of Liberalism within the church.  Today, the WCA is spearheading the foundation of a new traditional Methodist denomination in anticipation of the General Conference scheduled for August/September 2021 in Minneapolis.  Beth Caulfield is a founding member of the WCA, the President of the Greater New Jersey Chapter, and member of the Global Council, as well as an ordained Elder in the UMC appointed to Franklinville UMC and Newfield UMC in Southern New Jersey.  Her insight as one who has been part of the WCA since its inception is invaluable, and her viewpoint as a traditional and conservative Wesleyan is unshakable and inspirational.  I thoroughly enjoyed our talk today and hope to have her on again. The last three decades have seen amazing growth in wealth and geopolitical influence for a range of Asian countries, in large part due to new trade linkages around the world. And in the digital present, those linkages should only increase. One New Zealander working to help make this happen in both his own business and at ain international level is Mitchell Pham. Mitchell came to New Zealand from Vietnam, but a very different Vietnam to the one that exists now. He was 12 years old when he fled the country as a refugee – outrunning machine gun fire surviving exposure to the elements and running out of food before being picked up by an Indonesian oil rig crew. The next two years were spent across four different refugee camps, before finally arriving in New Zealand. Arriving here alone in the mid 1980s, Mitchell's next challenge was to adjust to the education system – but he thrived, meeting friends at university who he set up a company with that would became the Augen Software Group. Today, his software development company has offices across New Zealand and Vietnam, and Mitchell is a member of a number of national and international bodies helping increase the quality of our digital landscape. He’s the chair of the Digital Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, and New Zealand’s representative on the Asia Society’s Global Council, as well as chair of the the New Zealand Tech Industry Association and the Financial Technology Industry Group. He joined the podcast for a chat about his incredible journey, contributing to the industry and what’s next.Read more about Mitchell's story on The Spinoff. Tatiana Sharpe (@tatianasharpe) - Zimbabwe's youngest author, Co-Founder and CEO, Business owner, team member of Global Council for the NGO World Merit, United Nations (UN) Speaker and an incredible philanthropist through numerous volunteer programmes, this episode recording promises to have you enthralled from start to finish. Whilst Tatiana is all of these things mentioned above, this conversation was so beautifully recorded as its content contains her experiences and stories which have helped shape her into the woman she is today. Upon meeting her she had me engrossed in the bits and pieces of life that have helped to mold not only her worldview, but the worldview of the people she interacts with daily. My perception initially, was to unpack more of these stories around her successes. "What is it like still today being recognised as Zimbabwe's youngest author? Tell me more about founding your current business - Global Impact Network - from the knowledge that the mammoth multimedia messaging app Snapchat was born from the same university course at Stanford. The United Nations - you spoke to a room full of Trustees in 2016 - what was that like?" Instead, our conversation went along a different path. Yes, Tatiana's CV boasts a very impressive journey from the time most of us are pretty much learning to read. However, double-clicking to have a look beneath the surface of her accomplishments you will find one of the world's brightest and honest gems. Our conversation was instead geared towards taking a sneak peak at that. As a solemn humanitarian herself, and plunging both feet with me into a topic requiring immense personal vulnerability, Tatiana allowed us the incredible opportunity to get to know her from the inside out. One which written words cannot do justice and which the recording I hope does. Without a doubt, you'll hear from her again. You Can't Preserve What You Don't Have - Or Can You? Libraries as Infrastructure for Perpetual Access to Intellectual Output Since their existence, libraries have been responsible for preserving society's records and intellectual output. This ancient and important role is under serious threat in the digital age. Even for scholarly journals, the issue of perpetual access has not been solved, other than by libraries buying access to archival materials. Recently, it became clear that the open access business model, with a focus on free access to new publications, introduces new problems for the archival role of libraries. So if ownership is crucial for preservation, who will ensure future generations have access to scholarly journal content of past times? Black Hat Briefings, Las Vegas 2005 [Video] Presentations from the security conference

As a result of the Real-ID Act, all American citizens will have an electronically readable ID card that is linked to the federal database by May 2008. This means that in three years we will have a National ID card system that is being unilaterally controlled by one organization (DHS) whether we want it or not. Organizations such as the ACLU are already exploring opportunities for litigation. Privacy advocates cite Nazi Germany and slippery slopes, while the government waves the anti-terrorism flag back in their faces. Compromises and alternate solutions abound. Join us for a lively debate/open forum as an attempt to find a useable solution to this sticky problem. We will review solutions from the AMANA as well as ask why passports are not considered to be a privacy problem in the same ways. Would a National ID card make us safer? What to do about 15 million illegal immigrants? If college students can fake an ID, why can't a terrorist? What civil rights are abrogated by requiring everyone to possess an ID? What problem are we trying to solve anyway and will federal preemption address them? David Mortman, Chief Information Security Officer for Siebel Systems, Inc., and his team are responsible for Siebel Systems' worldwide IT security infrastructure, both internal and external.
