Collecting mokuhanga has never been easier. You no longer need to visit galleries as often; you can purchase prints online from anywhere in the world, all from the comfort of your own home. But you'd be doing yourself a disservice to stop there. Seeing prints in person at galleries is a wonderful experience — it allows you to get up close to the work, to see what your potential investment looks like under the lights, and to speak with the people who work in the galleries and collections, who can help guide you toward the right decision. One such gallery is in Tokyo and New York and has a long history of showcasing wonderful contemporary prints — from mokuhanga and aquatint to lithography and other mediums. The Tolman Collection Tokyo, located in the Shibadaimon district of Minato, Tokyo, has been operating for over 50 years and enjoys a strong reputation both in Japan and around the world. In this episode of The Unfinished Print: A Mokuhanga Podcast, I speak with Allison Tolman of The Tolman Collection Tokyo. We discuss how the gallery began — from the hope and a dream of Allison's parents, Mary and Norman Tolman, who built a life and a    business in a new country, to their friendships with many of the most important printmakers of their time. Allison shares why prints remain so vital today, emphasizing their democratic nature. She also discusses the differences between contemporary printmakers in Japan and those in the West, as well as the unique experiences of selling prints in Tokyo versus at The Tolman Collection in New York. Originating around 1915 under the direction of Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885-1962), the art form responded to the foreign demand for "traditional" Japanese imagery. Shin hanga artists focused on motifs like castles, bridges, famous landscapes, and bamboo forests. The style was initiated when Watanabe discovered Austrian artist Fritz Capelari (1884-1950) and commissioned him to design prints for Watanabe's budding printing house. This collaboration led to the evolution of shin hanga into a distinctive new style of Japanese woodblock printing. The shin hanga movement thrived until its inevitable decline after the Second World War (1939-1945). Shōzaburō Watanabe (1885-1962) - was one of the most important print publishers in Japan in the early 20th Century. His business acumen and desire to preserve the ukiyo-e tradition were incredibly influential for the artists and collectors in Japan and those around the world. Watanabe influenced other publishers, but his work in the genre is unparalleled. The shin-hanga (new print) movement is Watanabe's, collecting some of the best printers, carvers and designers to work for him. A great article by The Japan Times in 2022 discusses a touring exhibition of Watanabe's work called Shin Hanga: New Prints of Japan, which can be found here.  Kawamura Sayaka - is a mokuhanga printmaker based in Japan. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and the grandson of John D. Rockefeller and Laura Spelman Rockefeller.  Hasegawa Yuichi (1945-2025) - was a woodblock printmaker from Aizu in Fukushima Prefecture. He was from a family of lacquerware makers. Hasegawa incorporated lacquer resin and metallic paints into his reduction woodblocks, giving them a distinctive texture and gleam. Deeply influenced by Zen and the natural world, he aimed to capture the power and splendor of nature in his prints.  Night Sky No. 5 (2000) Seiko Kawachi - is a mokuhanga printmaker and painter based in Japan. His work is known for its rich use of color and dynamic energy. A longtime printmaking instructor at Tama Art University, he experienced a turning point in his middle age when he began exploring the influence of Hokusai. Using contemporary materials, his large, powerful prints capture the movement and vitality of the natural world. The paper is still crafted using traditional methods such as nagashizuki and tamezuki, which involve screens made of bamboo or Japanese nutmeg and the use of aibika as a natural binder. These time-honored techniques and materials have contributed to the recognition and preservation of Sekishu washi as a significant cultural craft. More information regarding Sekishu washi can be found at Kokei Japan, here.  Akua - are water-based pigments used in intaglio, mokuhanga, and monotype.  stair treads - are the horizontal parts of a staircase that you step on as you go up or down. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened down 57-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 23,422 on turnover of 7.5-billion N-T. The market rose last Friday after recovering, as the bellwether electronics sector - led by artificial intelligence-related stocks - regained its footing, pushing the main board to close at the day's high. Market watchers say investors appear to have moved away from U-S President Donald Trump's tariff actions, and are now instead focusing on economic fundamentals. Luermen spring festival draws over 700,000 in Tainan Organizers of the annual Lunar New Year event at Tainan's Lu-Er-Men Matsu Temple say an estimated 700,000 people attended the event this past weekend despite the cold weather. The event marks the 'spring ox' ritual and was celebrated with a huge two-hour long firework show, a drone light show featuring 500 drones forming images of dragons, snakes, and the Goddess Matsu, a parade and musical performances. Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che was the guest of honor at the opening ceremony at the temple in the city's Annan District. He was accompanied by the four Japanese mayors from Fukushima Prefecture. The Lu-Er-Men Spring Festival dates back to 1725 - and symbolized prosperity for the coming year. A large paper-mache ox is tossed into the crowd as part of the festival and attendees (參加者) tear off pieces for good luck. NKorea Kim Vows to Bolster Nuclear Program North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said an elevated U.S. security partnership with South Korea and Japan poses a grave (嚴重) threat to his country. In a speech marking the 77th founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army, Kim said the U.S.-Japan-South Korea trilateral security partnership established under a U.S. plot to form a NATO-like regional military bloc is inviting military imbalance on the Korean Peninsula. Kim vowed to further bolster the north's nuclear weapons program. He has previously made similar warnings, but his latest statement implies again that he won't likely embrace US President Donald Trump's overture to meet him and revive diplomacy anytime soon. US Alaska Crash Remains Recovered Return to Table of contents US authorities say the remains of all 10 people killed in Alaska plane crash have been recovered AP correspondent Julie Walker reports. Russia Island on Alert After Chinese Ship Stranding Part of Russia's Pacific island region of Sakhalin is on high alert after a Chinese cargo ship ran aground off its southwest coast. Local officials say there is no fuel spillage and no danger to the crew of the An Yang 2, which is carrying coal and heavy fuel oil. Russia's emergencies ministry said 20 crew were aboard. Preparations are underway to pump fuel out of the damaged vessel, which is stranded (擱淺) in shallow waters off the region's coast. Earlier this year, hundreds of volunteers in southwestern Russia spent weeks trying to contain a massive oil spill from two storm-stricken tankers in the Kerch Strait near Crimea. 2025 is the year of Tokyo Deaflympics, which will be held from November 15 to 26, 2025 in Tokyo with other venues in Shizuoka and Fukushima. Despite being older than the Paralympics – the first Deaflympics was held in Paris, France in 1924 – it doesn't receive as much attention as the Paralympics, although like the Paralympics it is recognized by the IOC. This event will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Deaflympics, the Winter events being held in 2024 in Erzurum, Turkey. Roughly 3,000 athletes from 70 to 80 countries and regions will participate. Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium is to be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies. Swimming events will be held at Tokyo Aquatics Centre, while track and field events as well as volleyball matches will take place at Komazawa Olympic Park. Soccer and cycling are the only events that will be held outside Tokyo, at J-Village in Fukushima Prefecture and at Japan Cycle Sports Center in Shizuoka Prefecture, respectively. With the exception of military records or a few popular cases, UFO research often gets drawn into an America-centric sphere. Because of this, or other reasons too, the phenomenon is received internationally with heavy reliance on US news and reports. But according to the US Department of Defense in 2023, Japan is a leading hotspot for UFOs as well. In June 2024, the Japanese government launched an 80-person nonpartisan group, including former defense ministers, to study UAP. Japan has three major UFO cases, named after regional areas - Kofu, Kochi, and Hokkaido - but also has mysterious stories like the Utsuro-Bune and the abundance of objects spotted over the Daiichi power plant after the 2011 disaster. Japan also has a Roswell, and a Sedona, in regard to UFO popularity and vortexes. The town is called Iinomachi in Fukushima Prefecture, just outside Fukushima city. Japanese protesters are continuing to urge the government to halt the release of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean, which began on Thursday. Citizens' groups held a protest rally near the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo again on Friday, strongly opposing the government's go-ahead for the Tokyo Electric Power Company to begin releasing contaminated water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean. Protesters said the government had chosen the least expensive and easiest method of disposing of Fukushima's radioactive water, ignoring strong opposition from Fukushima residents and the Japanese public. This also disregards international legal obligations, they said. Mizuho Fukushima, leader of the Social Democratic Party and a member of the House of Councilors, the upper house of the National Diet, said at the rally that the Japanese government's decision allows the discharge of radioactive substances into natural environments and such a move is an "atrocity". A lot of political manipulation is behind the move, she said. Similar protests were staged by civic groups in other Japanese cities. Among their appeals was one saying, "Don't spread any more poison in the sea." Hirofumi Kokubun, secretary-general of the Iwate Prefectural Association for a Peaceful, Democratic and Progressive Japan, emphasized that the release of contaminated water is a unilateral breach of promises made to fishers and the public, and constitutes a reckless act that undermines democracy. Kyoko Yoshida, vice-chairman of the Japanese Communist Party's Iwate Prefectural Committee, said policymakers should not be allowed to ignore the lessons of the nuclear accident and to give priority to the profits of the Tokyo Electric Power Company over the safety of citizens. Citing concerns over food safety and pollution of the ocean, China suspended the imports of all aquatic products originating from Japan from Thursday. Mami Moriya, a teacher of children with intellectual disabilities, said: "When it comes to potential dangers like this, there's no such thing as being too cautious. So if people from other countries say they don't want to import Japanese seafood products, that's understandable. It's only natural for other countries to give priority to the health and safety of their own people." Tokyo Electric Power Company has been unable to accurately determine the amount of radioactive substances to be discharged. Beginning the ocean discharge is thus certain to damage the natural environment, disrupt the livelihoods of fishers and threaten food safety for the public, Moriya said. She urged the government and the power company to pass on accurate data related to nuclear-contaminated water to other countries because, she said, the ocean discharge affects the future of all life on Earth. Masashi Tani, secretary-general of the Japan Congress Against A-and H-Bombs (Gensuikin), said: "After the government and the company accurately disclose the information, judging whether the ocean discharge is safe or not is up to us. It's not for the business promotion side to say whether it's safe or not." Kinzaburo Shiga, a third-generation fisherman in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, said he has been in the fishing industry for more than 50 years and is worried about whether the younger generation will be able to continue fishing. Shiga said he is preparing for the lifting of a ban from Sept 1 on bottom trawling, a method of fishing that involves dragging heavy nets across the seafloor, and feels anxious about this season's fishing, which will continue until the end of June, the newspaper Fukushima Minpo reported. The decision to proceed with the ocean discharge will have a substantial negative impact on Japanese products, primarily in fisheries, agriculture and forestry, thus dealing an economic blow to Japan. Simultaneously, the release of nuclear-contaminated water may also affect inbound tourism to the country, said Zhang Yulai, vice-president of the Japan Institute of Nankai University in Tianjin. Japan should be prepared to face various challenges and may even bear a heavy cost. Undoubtedly, the dumping of contaminated water will also severely affect its international image," Zhang said.“日本应该做好面对各种挑战的准备,甚至可能承担沉重的代价。毫无疑问,倾倒受污染的水也会严重影响其国际形象。”张玉来说道。Li Ruoyu, a visiting research fellow with the Institute of Japanese and Korean Studies at Sichuan Normal University in Chengdu, said: "As a researcher of Japanese issues, what concerns me the most is the risk of the Japanese government's categorization of all questioning of the ocean discharge as politically unfriendly toward Japan. While such an approach may cater to domestic nationalist sentiments in Japan, it hinders the resolution of the issue and fails to effectively mitigate potential contamination risks."
