Uranium Mining in Northern Saskatchewan―What You Need To Know; Part 2, Small Nuclear Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Consent in Saskatchewan: What You Haven't Been Told Originally broadcast as a live-to-air online webinar, this four-part series was shortened to audio for your listening pleasure. We want to help you learn more about uranium mining in Northern Saskatchewan, why it is happening, and what the future looks like for Indigenous Peoples and allies resisting uranium mining and nuclear waste in their traditional territories.  Tori Cress hosts this episode's guests, including Paul Belanger, Keepers of the Water Science Advisor. Dr. Gordon Edwards, President and co-founder of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, and Benjamin Ralston BA, JD, LLM, Assistant Professor at the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan. Between our guests, you will gain decades of combined knowledge of uranium extraction and nuclear energy. You can watch the original broadcast on Facebook and YouTube. Please note the YouTube video is of lower quality due to connectivity issues during the live broadcast. In this episode, we will hear from Dr. Gordon Edwards, president and co-founder of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility. Dr. Edwards is dedicated to education and research on all issues related to nuclear energy, whether civilian or military, including non-nuclear alternatives. A retired professor of mathematics and science at Vanier College, Doctor Edwards has also served as a consultant on nuclear issues for governmental and non-governmental bodies for over 45 years. He has been accepted as an expert witness by US and Canadian courts and tribunals, has cross-examined nuclear experts during provincial commissions of inquiry, and has been invited to address various countries. Nuclear energy is not clean energy that will save us from the climate crisis. This false solution is being sold to citizens by the same industries that are the source of the climate problem. Nuclear power, including SMRs, is not a climate solution because it is filthy to mine, physically dangerous, too expensive and very slow. The rise of nuclear energy as a solution to the climate crisis is a looming threat to clean, fresh water for the entire planet. Current extraction practices and policies have brought us to this global crisis, and colonial practices are not how we save ourselves from ourselves. Natural law shows us that we are not separate from our environment, and the time to pay attention to that teaching is now. This episode was edited and produced by Beverly Andrews.

What the Riff?!?
1979 — July: The Kinks “Low Budget”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2022 38:56

Their eighteenth studio album found The Kinks moving in a different direction than many previous albums.  Low Budget would address many contemporary issues in song, rather than the subtle pieces and nostalgia found on earlier albums.  The Kinks also recorded much of the album in New York rather than London.  The result charted well in the United States, reaching number 11 on the Billboard 200.  It did not do well in their native Britain. The band members of The Kinks for this album were Ray Davies on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, Dave Davies on guitar and background vocals, Jim Rodford on bass and background vocals, and Mick Avory on drums.  They are joined in the studio by Nick Newall on saxophone and Gordon Edwards (briefly a member of the group) playing piano on the title track.  Ray Davies wrote all the tracks on this album. The album was more heavily produced than other albums and took a harder edge, which was appropriate for their arena rock phase for the group.  There were a lot of diverse songs as well, led by the disco-infused lead single, "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman."   Catch Me Now I'm FallingThe second track from the album uses Captain America as a surrogate for the United States, and criticizes the U.S. as a country fallen on hard times, and its allies as not coming the the need of America despite earlier times when the allies were help by America during and after World War II.  The song was released as a single, but only in the U.S.PressureA high speed deeper cut, this song looks at pressure as a contagious disease, one that can be spread from one person to another, but which also can take over when you're alone.  This song has a decidedly punk flavor.  The call and response sound in the vocals gives it a more manic feel as well.(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman The lead and biggest single from the album reached number 41 on U.S. charts.  Ray Davies was inspired to write the lyrics by the release of "Superman:  The Movie" in the previous year.  The disco feel was difficult for the band to achieve.  The song itself tells of a desire to take on modern problems like Superman, though the protagonist is nothing like the invincible super hero.Low BudgetThe title track leads off the second side of the album.  It describes a man learning to live much more frugally due to hard economic times.  The song was in line with the recessionary malaise of the times, though people could identify with it when living through any recession. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Main Theme to the motion picture The Amityville HorrorThis popular horror show convinced us all to stay away from houses that say, "Get Out!" STAFF PICKS:You Can't Change That by RaydioBruce leads off the staff picks with an American R&B and Funk band. Raydio is Arnell Carmichael and Darren Carmichael on vocals, Charles Fearing on guitars, Larry Tolbert on percussion, and Ray Parker, Jr. on vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, and primary songwriter.  This song went to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and features Arnell Carmichael on high vocals and Ray Parker, Jr. on low vocals.Goodbye (Astrid, Goodbye)  by Cold ChiselRob's staff pick may not be well known in the U.S., but is a hit from Australia.  In fact, Cold Chisel has been listed as the number 3 favorite Australian band as rated by Australian musicians, behind AC/DC and INXS, but ahead of Midnight Oil and Crowded House.  This rocking song with a boogie beat is about a guy who is hitting the road, and was designed as a set finisher.I Don't Like Mondays by the Boomtown RatsWayne brings us a cult hit that was inspired by a school shooting in California.  The piano-driven piece didn't chart in the U.S. but has had staying power over time.  Front man Bob Geldof heard the original story of the shooting while doing an interview at WRAS radio out of Georgia State.  Geldof regretted doing the song because it made the shooter famous.Heart of the Night by PocoBrian  wraps up the staff picks on a mellow note.  This is from the album "The Legend."   Writer Paul Cotton said this song was inspired by his "love and lust for New Orleans,"  and that the song practically wrote itself.  Phil Kinsey, who performed on saxophone on Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" is featured on alto sax on this song.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Morning Dance by Spyro GyraThis jazz fusion piece was on the charts in the summer of 1979 and closes out of podcast this week.

That was the night where everyone was coming up to me saying, “you’re playing your ass off. Greg Jaczko, the former Chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has published an explosive new book: Confessions of a Rogue Nuclear Regulator. In it, he gets honest with the American people about the dangers of nuclear technology, which he labels “failed,” “dangerous,” “not reliable.” He particularly comes down against nuclear as having any part in mitigating the problems of climate change/global warming. In this extended Nuclear Hotseat interview, Jaczko brings us inside the NRC’s response to Fukushima, the “precipice” on which nuclear safety balances, his own growing doubts about how safe nuclear reactors are in the United States, and how, ultimately, it was that concern with safety that probably brought him down.“Jaczko Nixes Nukes” – A Backgrounder on Greg Jaczko’s book and the issues he addresses from Dr. Gordon Edwards of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility.http://nuclearhotseat.com/Please go to Nuclear Hotseat and donate if you appreciate this source of information. 2011 has been a very eventful year for activists, community organizers, and progressives. First we had the Arab Spring, Canada's NDP leader Jack Layton died after a long battle with cancer, then the Occupy movement grew into a global phenomenon. Japan faced an earthquake, tsunami, and a disabled and damaged nuclear plant. Abousfian Abdelrazik was finally taken off the United Nations list of terror suspects, the Canadian government came under fire again for the terrible conditions in First Nations communities, and the Canadian Boat To Gaza did its best to make its way to its destination. In this episode of rabble radio, we'll look back over the year. This year was also rabble.ca's 10th year as the go-to independent media website in Canada. We held a number of events throughout the year, and launched a new series by notable thinkers in Canada called Reinventing Democracy: Reclaiming the Commons. Olivia Nuamah is the current director of the Atkinson Roundation, which provided start-up money for rabble.ca. She was part of a panel discussion we held in Toronto to celebrate our decade online. When she took the mic, she gave rabble a challenge for the years ahead. Here's what she had to say. One of the big news stories during this year's federal election was the Orange Crush, which made the NDP the official opposition in Canada's Parliament for the first time in history. The jubilation over that advance was soon overshadowed by the death of party leader Jack Layton. rabble.ca was at the state funeral, and spoke with some of the mourners who attended.  Here is some of what they had to say, remembering Jack Layton. The year began with uprisings in Egypt and across the Arab world. Nahla Abdo is an Arab-Canadian feminist. She was kind enough to share her thoughts on the uprising and women's role in it. Here's what she had to say. Jase Tanner is a filmmaker and activist with Code Pink on his way to Gaza via Egypt when the demonstrations began. We caught up with him there. While all that was happening in Tahrir square, here at home, conditions at remote First Nations were as normal. That is, not great. By this winter, leaders in Pikangikum and Attawapiskat had appealed publicly for help from the government. Joanne Dallaire is a respected elder and educator, and she has some ideas about how Canada could improve conditions on reserves They involve you and I. Here's what she had to say in an interview this fall. Japanese Canadians rallied to send help to the thousands upon thousands who were affected by the earthquake, tsunami, and accompanying nuclear emergency that engulfed the country in the spring of this year. As the crisis developed, rabble.ca's redeye podcast checked in with Gordon Edwards, head of the Canadian coalition for nuclear responsibility. Here's part of an interview with Edwards, after revelations that Japan had not issued warnings to schools affected by radiation from the plant led to protests from Japanese citizens. The Occupy movement started in the summer in NYC, and by summer it had spread to streets and parks across North America and Europe. The Occupiers took on a wide range of causes, but in general, protests focused on issues of income disparity and housing for the 99 per cent of people struggling in today's economy. Despite the fact that cities eventually tore down the occupy encampments, the movement is continuing. At McMaster University, Occupy has moved to the student centre. The progressive voices podcast featured the Occupy movement there in their last podcast. Here's a sample. We've featured a lot of music this year on the network.  We started the show by playing a segment of a duet for Abousfian Abdelrazik. It was composed as part of a project to support his return to Canada and his removal from the UN list of terror suspects. Another musical development this year was that Raffi composed a number of songs to inspire and energize political activism in Canada. We're going to finish this year-end rabble radio with the song he composed for the Occupy movement. Here is “No wall too tall.”

In this podcast: terrifying yet boring — the Canadian election. A new rabble radio contest. Cracking the cover of human books. Fukushima Daichi and alt power. An ode to the ipad deux. Canada is enduring its fourth election in seven years. While the NDP and the Liberal Parties grapple for the vote from the Left, the Conservative Party of Canada is reaching for a majority government. As polls stand now, though, they aren't going to get it. For the NGOs and government watchdogs that have seen their funding go unrenewed under a government dominated by the Conservative Party, that could provide a bit of welcome relief. But voting day isn't here yet. Murray Dobbin is a political commentator and on the board of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. We thought we'd check in with him about what he sees happening in the 2011 election campaign. If I had $1,000, 000. The song is relatively well-known in Canada. But a million dollars sounds like pocket change when you compare it to the 30 BILLION dollars that Canada paid for a few fighter jets not too long ago. So rabble.ca is rewriting the lyrics to the tune, hopefully with some help from you. Tell us what you'd spend 30 billion dollars on and we'll put your suggestions our version of this song. So what do you think? A national Childcare program? Funding for  KAIROS? Solar power for the parliament buildings? Internet connectivity in the North? Candy for all? You tell us, and we'll put it in song. You can email billion@rabble.ca with your suggestions, or you can phone them in at 1-360-566-2214. Obviously, we take mp3 files too. Understanding breeds justice. That's the philosophy behind the human books project. The project is open to libraries all over the world. Here's how it works: Library visitors sign out a Human Book, and can ask their book any question they want. The books are volunteers who are willing to answer all kinds of questions about their lives. The Human Book Project recently came to Winnipeg. That's where Noreen Mae Ritsema stopped by the branch, and sat down with the human books there. She asked them what they're sharing and what kinds of questions they're fielding. The first human book she signed out was all about organic farming. Here's part of their discussion. Election aside, all eyes have been on Japan for the last month. The tsunami that swept away hundreds of thousands of people has passed, but the nuclear reactors on the countries east coast are still pumping radiation into the atmosphere and the water. Bottled water shortages and rolling blackouts have become facts of life in cities across the country. rabble.ca's redeye podcast had a few questions about Fukushima-Daiichi, so they called up Gordon Edwards, President of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility. At the end of the interview, they talked about what the disaster will mean for the nuclear industry and other  power generation options here at home.  Here is that part of that conversation. The ipad 2 had only been in Canada a few days when Wayne used it to record a multi-track segment of Online Tools for the 21st century. Wayne says I'm crazy not to own one of these. Here's his column.
