Thomas Eddie Bullard was born in North Carolina in 1949 and developed an early interest in flying saucers thanks to Friday and Saturday nights at the movies, where he saw such classics as "Earth Versus the Flying Saucers". Sputnik inspired him to begin reading the newspapers and he no sooner started than the Levelland sightings piqued his curiosity. He began to read all the UFO publications he could find--Keyhoe's books, Dick Hall's "The UFO Evidence", Fate, Ray Palmer's Flying Saucers--and he eventually joined NICAP and APRO in the 1960s. After spending his undergraduate years at the University of North Carolina, Bullard went to graduate school in Folklore at Indiana University, and wrote his dissertation on UFOs, completing his doctoral degree in 1982. During his research he scanned a great many newspapers for reports of the 1896-97 airship and other pre-1947 sightings. He continued this work by traveling to state archives and began issuing collections of this material as The Airship File in 1982. When the Fund for UFO Research called for someone to catalogue and carry out a comparative study of abduction reports, he took on the job and completed "UFO Abductions--The Measure of a Mystery in 1987." The literature up to that time included some 300 reports, and comparisons demonstrated that reliable reports had many details of sequence and content in common. Following up on this abduction research, Bullard published articles in the Journal of American Folklore, Journal of UFO Studies, IUR, the MUFON UFO Journal, and the 2000 MUFON Symposium, arguing that abduction reports maintain a surprising consistency. This sameness contrasts with folk narratives, urban legends, and products of fantasy, where narrators readily exploit opportunities for variation in the subject material. Bullard contributed several articles for the Abduction Study Conference held at MIT in 1992. One such article, treating a comparison of abduction investigators' findings, he later expanded into "The Sympathetic Ear", published by the Fund for UFO Research in 1995. His ongoing interest in the historical and cultural aspects of UFOs led to an article in "UFOs and Abductions", edited by David M. Jacobs and published by the University Press of Kansas in 2000. He is currently working on a UFO book for the same press. Over the years he has served on the board of CUFOS and the advisory board of the Fund for UFO Research. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of May 31, 2021.  This revised episode from March 2017 is part of a series this year of groundwater-related episodes. SOUND – ~5 sec – running water faucet This week, we drop in on an event where people line up to talk and learn about their household water faucets.  Sound plumb unbelievable?  Well, just have a listen for about 50 seconds. VOICES - ~51 sec – Excerpts from March 20, 2017, recording at Virginia Tech. “You’ve already paid with a credit card for two samples?”“That’s exactly right, yep.” …“All the instructions are on there.  Have you participated before?”“No.”“Ok…so the sample instructions are in there…There’s a survey you’ll want to fill out, as well.  The big thing is -- one of the big things is -- to let the water sit in the pipes overnight, [from say] 10 o’clock…And then the first thing in the morning, [at] the tap you’re going to collect from, collect that bottle with the X first, and then you can collect the other bottles in whatever order you want to.  OK?” …“If we have questions, is there somewhere to send them to by chance?”“There’s a link on the Web site that’s in there….”“Ok.” …“Have you participated with us before?”“I have.  And if there’s basic instructions in there, I’m good to go with those.” …“And the drop-off’s Wednesday morning.”“Good deal.”“All right?”“Thank you.”“Thank you, and you all have a good one.”“Thank you.” You’ve been listening to citizen participants and Virginia Tech faculty at a Virginia Household Water Quality Program clinic kick-offin Montgomery County on March 20, 2017.  The program offers drinking-water clinics in which people who rely on private wells, springs, or cisterns can get their water tested inexpensively and receive a report interpreting the results.  Citizens pick up a sampling kit and instructions, collect water from a household faucet (or in some cases, directly from a spring or other water source), and return the samples two days later.  Tech laboratories analyze the samples for bacteria, lead, arsenic, nitrate, iron, sulfate, and several other constituents.  After about four weeks, program faculty hold a meeting to give participants their confidential results, offer interpretation of the analyses, and provide other information on managing water systems.  The clinics in 2021 began in February and run into late November, serving over 60 Virginia localities.  In operation since 1989, the program has covered the Commonwealth several times, with the results providing valuable information to specific homeowners and offering broader snapshots of groundwater conditions within localities. In a companion program—the Virginia Well Owner Network—trained Virginia Cooperative Extension agents assist Virginians with water-well questions and problems.  Both programs are administered by Virginia Tech’s Department of Biological Systems Engineering, through Cooperative Extension. For more information about these programs, search online for the Virginia Household Water Quality Program; phone (540) 231-9058; or contact your local Cooperative Extension office. We close with some music, named for the weather every well-owner—in fact, every water user—needs regularly.  Here’s about 25 seconds of “Driving Rain,” by the Nelson County, Va., band, Chamomile and Whiskey. MUSIC - ~24 sec – instrumental SHIP’S BELLVirginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Ben Cosgrove for his version of “Shenandoah” to open and close the show.  In Blacksburg, I’m Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. GUEST: Kelley Bollen is a Certified Animal Behavior Consultant with a master’s degree in Animal Behavior who has worked in the field of companion animal behavior for twenty years. Kelley is the Owner and Principal Consultant for Kelley Bollen Consulting – an animal behavior consulting business that works with animal shelters across the country on the design and implementation of comprehensive behavior programs to improve the welfare of the animals. She leads Humane Network’s Alive & Thriving animal behavior training program for shelter and clinic staff. And Kelley teaches a new Animal Shelter Behavior Management Certificate Course through the University of the Pacific. MAIN QUESTION: How can shelters and rescue groups help people in their community with dogs who have separation anxiety issues? TAKEAWAYS: Actively reach out to the people in your community now (especially people who adopted a dog within the past year), with ideas to help them prepare their pets for when they return to work in an office in order to help prevent the development of separation anxiety. If a dog can’t be content in one room while their person is in another, then there will likely be problems when the person is outside the home for extended periods. Here are a few behavior tips to share with your community: Be low-key when you leave and when you return. Make your departure fun by hiding treats around the home and/or giving a Kong-type toy filled with mushy food, like canned pet food. Practice leaving and returning for increasing lengths of time, starting with 30 seconds, so the dog gets used to you going and coming back. Take the dog’s Kong when you return so the dog wants you to stay away longer. Leave a radio or TV on when you're gone to give the dog some company. Give the dog 10 to 15 minutes of aerobic exercise before leaving such as running up and down stairs or chasing a ball in the backyard. “The Ys sounds like Js,” Yuyi Morales tells me when I ask for the correct way to pronounce her name. It’s embarrassing to ask but my detective work online resulted in a half dozen different options. Yuyi is a Mexican-American children’s book author and illustrator. She was born in Mexico and raised amongst giant grandmothers, mossy house walls, and rampaging feral gardens, fostering a strong bond with magical stories that ran in her family as a child. Today she is known for her incredible children’s books which combine powerful spare language and sumptuous complex imagery. She has written books like, Dreamers, Niño Wrestles the World, Just a Minute, Viva Frida, Little Night, Just In Case and her brand new book coming out in September called, Bright Star (I suggest you pre-order it!). It tells the story of a fawn making her way through a border landscape, teeming with flora and fauna native to the region. A gentle empowering voice encourages her to face her fears when she comes across an obstacle in the form of an insurmountable barrier. A lot of her work has these themes running through it — immigration, pilgrimage, journeying, discovery. It’s no wonder she is one of the most decorated children’s books author in the world. At last count she’s won twenty-nine awards including the Pura Belpré Medal, the Americas Award for Children and Young Adult Literature, the California Book Award, the Tomas Riviera Award and the Caldecott Honor. For those of you who know the children’s books world well, the Caldecott is the top prize! She is the first Latina to ever be a Caldecott recipient. Let’s strap in to talk about the burdens of colonialism, Mexican artistry, introducing books to book deprived communities, magic realism, community feminism, teen prostitution, dirty cops, living in books, making the world a better place, and, of course, the wonderful Yuyi Morales’s three most formative books. Let’s head down to Veracruz, Mexico. Feel that sun on your face, picture yourself on a beach, grab a drink, lay out a towel, and stare into the sea and the surf with me. Let’s flip the page into Chapter 79 … What You'll Learn: What is Xalapa like? What is the state of Mexico today? What are the burdens of colonialism? What is community feminism?  What is the cost of a book in Mexico? How can magical realism still be familiar? What motivated the student uprisings of 1968 in Mexico City? What was La Noche de Tlatelolco? Why do Mexican students feel criminalized? What must we change in our culture to allow children to  thrive? Why must we change our paternalistic views on immigration? What can we learn from children? What toxins do we absorb when we eat animals that have been slaughtered cruelly? How can we organize books by our emotional state? What is storytelling? 3 Books With Neil Pasricha
Chapter 78: Louis Sacher on sideways stories from Salinger to Steinbeck

3 Books With Neil Pasricha

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2021 72:52

I was a tiny and skinny kid with thick glasses at my public school in the suburbs of Toronto in the early 80s. I was pretty lonely and definitely hadn’t found my way. One day my librarian Ms. Ferrell handed me a book called Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar. The book single-handedly turned me into a reader. I had never read a book that was funny, absurd, choppy that just kept me flipping, flipping, flipping. I loved the book. I fell into the book. I read it again and again and again and still have multiple copies on my bookshelf today. (A small count towards the nine million copies sold.) In 2010 when The Book of Awesome came out I wrote in the Acknowledgements: “To Louis Sachar, for writing Sideways Stories from Wayside School and teaching a nerdy kid to to fall in love with reading.” Louis Sacher was born in East Meadow, New York in 1954 and moved to California when he was 9. He liked school but was not much of a reader until he fell into the works of J.D.Salinger and Kurt Vonnegut. He started studying at Ohio University but left to go move back with his mom after his father sadly passed away in his first semester. Later on he enrolled at Berkeley majoring in Economics. One day, on campus, he caught sight of a young girl passing out flyers. The flyers read: “Help - Teachers Aides Wanted at Hillside Elementary - Earn 3 course credits.” It struck him as a sweet deal. No homework, no term papers, no tests. He signed up. He soon found himself both in the classroom and on the school playground, known to the kids as “Louis the Yard Teacher”. He loved it. And it ended up changing his life. His time at the local public school inspired him to write Sideway Stories from Wayside School. He even named the kids in the book after real kids he taught. It published in 1978 though did not make a loud splash. No fanfare. So Louis went on to Law School and practiced law for 10 years — all the while writing children’s books on the side. His writing finally took off in 1989. He quit law to write full time and is now one of the best known children’s authors in the world. (Although I’m a Sideways junkie he’s probably sold even more copies of Holes which won him both the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and the Newbery Medal and — no biggie — was made into a giant blockbuster film, too.) I was delighted to sit down with a childhood idol. He called us up from the suburbs of Austin, Texas and we talked about absurdity, wooing readers, drinking urine, literary heroes, celebrity culture, writing structure, The Shawshank Redemption, wrestling with doubt, and how to live a quiet life. Let’s flip the page into Chapter 78 now… What You'll Learn: What kind of reader do writers think about as they write? Are writers still heroes today? What made the 1960s such a special time of upheaval? How do we live a quiet life in today’s world? How can writers maintain humility? How does one separate commercial success from what you do next?  How do authors use their craft to skip time smartly in their work? How do you make a good movie from a book? How do some authors cultivate friendship with their readers? You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/78  Leave us a voicemail. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to two new Patreon Producers! ALEX EFTIMIE and BETTY MCDANIEL   2013 MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG COUPÉ ELECTRIC DRIVE   - Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2012 with deliveries beginning in 2013, it was anticipated that less than 100 examples would be built, but in reality production was far fewer. This car is beleived to be one of just nine examples completed.   - Powered by four electric motors at each corner bringing a total output of 750 PS (740 bhp) and 1,000 NM of torque, the SLS AMG Electric Drive’s transmission allows for seamless four-wheel drive performance. The car’s lithium-ion battery pack at full charge could provide a range of 250 km.   - Paddle shifters behind the steering wheel allow the driver to control the level of regenerative braking available, meaning that one-pedal driving can be achieved with ease.   - Believed to be one of only nine examples produced, these cars provided a rare glimpse into the future of the sports car, a future which is fast approaching, and as such the SLS AMG Electric Drive will continue to be highly sought after by collectors for years to come as it has set the standard for others to follow.   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/KCWMV/ Original Source : https://rmsothebys.com/en/home/private-sales/r5104-2013-mercedes-benz-sls-amg-coup%C3%A9-electric-drive/1090213       RIVIAN TO PARTNER WITH NATIONWIDE FOR INSURANCE PROGRAM   - Rivian’s plans to sell insurance for its electric vehicles are now taking shape, with new details released about data-driven coverage and a partnership with established underwriter Nationwide.   - Rivian recently announced plans to sell insurance products as part of its digital ordering process. The company says by linking insurance to the vehicle itself, it will be able to diagnose issues more quickly and comprehensively, and even remotely. And those who use Rivian’s mid-level autonomous driving tool can get discounts on their insurance rates.   - Rivian Insurance will be available to customers in 40 states initially; insurance is generally regulated state-by-state. The policies will be underwritten by third-party carriers.   - The reason it’s possible is because of telematics, also known as usage-based insurance (UBI), a trend that’s grown within the insurance business for the past decade or so. That’s technology inside of a car that can track how fast you accelerate, how hard you brake—in other words, how risky you are. With super-connected vehicles like Rivian’s, there is simply more data available.   - Every Rivian vehicle is equipped with the company’s Driver+ suite of safety technology. Rivian Insurance customers will automatically receive a Driver+ rate reduction, in addition to any discounts for using the feature that automatically steers and adjusts speed on the highway.   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/18Nal/ Original Source : https://www.wglt.org/post/rivian-partner-nationwide-insurance-program#stream/0   HOW BIDEN PLANS TO BUILD 500 EV CHARGING STATIONS   - President Joe Biden has proposed spending at least $15 billion to begin rolling out electric vehicle charging stations, with the goal of reaching 500,000 charging stations nationwide by 2030.   - he roll-out of chargers should match consumer adoption to moderate demand and allow time to expand the electric grid   - Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities: “In order for EVs to be more pervasive, it’s going to have to be gas station-like, where you can find an EV charging station with significant capacity” almost anywhere.   - The Biden administration has frequently likened the president’s infrastructure proposal and the EV initiatives within it to the roll out of the interstate highway system in the 1950s in scope and potential influence, which cost about $1.1 trillion in today’s dollars ($114 billion at the time). The gas stations that dot the interstates and reach out into some of the most remote areas of the country didn’t come all at once — they tracked with demand for cars and trucks as it rose over the 20th century, experts say.   - There are about 102,000 public charging outlets across about 42,000 charging stations nationwide today, according to the Department of Energy, with a third concentrated in California   - However, investment from utilities, auto companies and private charging companies won’t be enough without some government help, said charging specialists in each industry — both to support the market expansion and to ensure it happens quickly and equitably, as the administration has said it hopes to do.It’s also crucial in order to be competitive with China, experts say, which has dramatically outpaced both the U.S. and Europe in publicly accessible chargers.   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/auPnO/ Original Source : https://www.govtech.com/transportation/biden-plans-to-build-500-ev-charging-stations     BIDEN'S FIRST 100 DAYS HAVE ALREADY ELECTRIFIED THE AUTO INDUSTRY   - An electric federal fleet   - EV tax credit renewal nabs attention   - $100 billion for direct EV rebates   - Half a million EV chargers   - Remaking America's EV supply chain   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/PsbqE/ Original Source : https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/biden-first-100-days-auto-industry-ev-emissions/?utm_source=reddit.com     ELECTRIC CARS TO STORE RENEWABLES IN THE NETHERLANDS   - We Drive Solar and Hyundai are planning to set up a network of 500 bi-directional EV recharging stations in the city and region of Utrecht. Through this technology, electric cars may contribute to the storage of renewable energy in a country affected by grid constraints.   - The stations will be initially tested on Hyundai's Ioniq 5 car, which is equipped with bi-directional charging technology.   - The project includes standardization and embedding of protocols, software-mediated control of charging stations, a scientific validation of the proposed “bi-directional ecosystem,” the large scale application of bidirectional shared cars in a green urban district, and coupling car-sharing reservations with bidirectional charging.   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/1cS1S/ Original Source : https://www.pv-magazine.com/2021/04/29/electric-cars-to-store-renewables-in-the-netherlands/   EV CHARGING NETWORK CHARGEPOINT NOW SUPPORTS ANDROID AUTO   - Android phone users will be able to find, navigate to, and start charging from a ChargePoint charging station from their car’s infotainment screen, without having to pick up their phone. Support for Android Auto follows the addition of CarPlay support in November last year.   - the Android Auto experience lets you view a map with nearby charging stations, check status, filter by metrics like availability and cost, and then start a charging session once you arrive. The in-vehicle app can also be set to notify the driver once a busy charging station becomes available.   - USA, Canada, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/3ruEy/ Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/29/22409310/chargepoint-android-auto-electric-vehicle-charging-network   2021 PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO VERSIONS GET HIGHER EPA RANGE RATINGS   - The 2021 model year versions of the top-of-the-line Porsche Taycan Turbo and Turbo S received noticeably better EPA range and efficiency ratings. However, the gain of roughly 10 miles or 5% is still too small to offset the difference to real-world results, which are usually significantly higher than EPA.   - Taycan Turbo is 212 miles (341 km), which is 11 miles, or 5.5% higher than before.   - Porsche Taycan Turbo S, the EPA Combined range increased by 9 miles or 4.7% compared to 2020 MY, to 201 miles (323 km)   Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/oxe0V/ Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/504432/2021-porsche-taycan-turbo-epa/   QOTW   What’s the best consumer education for EVs in 2021?   RAJEEV NARAYAN Here in the U.S., and presumably in Europe,  the majority of car buyers have never driven an EV or may not even know anyone with an EV. Therefore an EV does not even come to mind when shopping for a car. A great many of these buyers  may be best served by an EV and don’t even know it. The most effective consumer education for them is free test drives that are heavily promoted, as once driven, EVs tend to sell themselves.   e-Tripping with Adam Gebbett Regarding question of the week. I would love to educate every new ev buyer that you do not need 500 miles of range. Why people bang on about range in the U.K. is a mystery. Bladder 100 miles, service station every 40 miles.   David Sawdon Great to see you back on YouTube. Love the addition of screen shots. Getting people in to electric vehicles is key. All loan vehicles while your ICE is in for a service should be electric cars to help adoption.   SACHA most effective consumer education imho starts with butts in seat . I haven’t had one passenger that wasn’t immediately intrigued and asking questions. Those that are really interested do more reading after that , ask follow up questions etc.   ED CORTEEN The best way to reach people who do not drive EVs is to give them a test drive, any Dealer who is serious should use EVs as service loaners for their customers. You can watch as many YouTube videos as you like but real experience is the only way to find out.   DAVID CURTIS To get more bums in the seats of EV is by word of mouth and seeing for them selves how great they are.   BYRON STUMMAN Thinking about the most effective consumer education method, I think it has to come from dealerships.  Commercials and news stories are great but people are physically buying their new cars at dealerships. The sales teams and management need to be pro EV, showcase the cars on showroom floors and encourage customers to give them a test drive. Bums in seats as you say. Currently from sales teams there is still a lot of apprehension and doubt whether EV’s are serious cars worth buying.   DOUG VOWLES Here in Ontario Canada, we have Plug ‘n Drive, (About Plug’n Drive – Plug'n Drive (plugndrive.ca)) an organization that provides free EV test drives and consumer education.  It’s non-profit funded by Ontario Power Generation and other companies with a stake in EV success.  But this is something that governments and auto companies should be mandating world-wide.  Sample a typical EV experience first and “get it” – then worry about what the best brand and model is.   MARK RICHARDS I drive for Uber with my Bolt.  And I get a LOT of questions about it from people.  In fact, I think I’ve convinced at least 5 people to make a trip to the chevy dealer to check one out…especially with how cheap they are going right now. I should work out a deal with a local Denver dealer to get me a commission

Happy Pink Moon, everybody! Way back in 2017, I came across a feature article in The New York Times Magazine called “A Whimsical Wordsmith Charts a Course Beyond Twitter.” The article was about MIT PhD student Jonny Sun’s online personality — as a sentimental alien — attracting a huge following online.   I was like “Okay, this is about the latest viral Instagram influencer and their particular brand of attention seeking behavior.” But as I read the piece, and went deeper into the bio of Jonny Sun, I found myself fascinated. Jonny Sun is a PhD student at MIT looking to understand, in more objective ways, how social media fosters community. His research focuses on how social media content influences the broader world. How meaning is made. How it spreads. How it changes news and culture. As one comedian put it, “He’s like Jane Goodall and we’re the apes.” I found myself falling deeper and deeper into the Jonny Sun rabbit hole. There’s a lot there! Jonny is an architect, designer, engineer, artist, playwright, and comedy writer who has written for BoJack Horseman. In fact, we recorded this chapter with him in L.A. currently writing another screen play. Jonny’s work is across multiple disciplines which broadly addresses the narrative of human experience. His plays have been performed at the Yale School of Drama, Hart House Theatre in Toronto, the Toronto Theatre Lab First Sight Festival and the University of Toronto Drama Festival. His art has been exhibited at Yale University and the University of Toronto. And, he is the author of a brand new and highly anticipated book called Goodbye, Again: Essays, Reflections & Illustrations. It is a truly wonderful book. Looks simple on the surface but then roller coasters up and down and sideways with obsessive mental insights like Jenny Lawson or David Foster Wallace. Jonny’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, McSweeneys, NPR, The New York Times and Late Night with Seth Myers. He’s also been named by Times as one of the 25 most influential people on the internet, Forbes has named him one of their 30 under 30 and his TED Talk has nearly four million views. Are you ready to talk about the culture of productivity, about being on all the time, about therapy and anxiety, about the provocative nature of humor, about succulents and aloe plants, about Dadaism, about competition, about algorithms, and of course about the wonderful Jonny Sun’s 3 most formative books?  Let’s turn the page into Chapter 77 now… What You'll Learn: What is a toxic culture of productivity? How do you juggle competing pursuits? What are the additional pressures marginalized people face? How do drama and humor interplay in comedy? How do we stand out in today’s mass media dominated world? What are the tensions between professional and personal ambition? How do social media algorithms work? What is instructional art? What is behavioural simulation? How do you convey deep thought and emotion in short form? Do you suffer from anxiety disorder? Depression? Intrusive thoughts? Obsessive compulsive disorder? Voluntary hair pulling? Avoidant personality disorder? Any of the above? Well, Jenny Lawson suffers from all of the above. Tuberculosis too, according to her wonderful new book. It’s an overwhelming way to live and only partly cured by being a global community leader for mental health through her wonderful blog (TheBloggess.com), her millions of followers, and her indie bookshop Nowhere Bookshop down in San Antonio, Texas. Does Jenny Lawson do podcasts? Interviews? No, not really. She tells us at the beginning of the chat that she loves 3 Books so much that she wanted to come — lucky us, as 3 Bookers have been asking for this interview for years! — and she made herself cozy by calling me up from under her desk, in cozy clothes, post-beta-blockers, and with Hunter S. Tomcat providing animal therapy throughout. Jenny is funny, crass, smart, and openhearted. She’s struck a deep chord with her books Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Furiously Happy, You Are Here, and Broken. (All, I should mention, with the wonderful Amy Einhorn who’s edited four of my books, too!) Jenny and I talk about what a good editor does, reading in the freezer, stealing Stephen King, dollhouse therapy, mental health toolkits, LSD, what your kids will actually remember about you as a parent, and of course, Jenny’s 3 most formative books. Jenny is gracious and disarmingly truthful and she doesn't want her pain to go to waste. She is a beaming voice the world needs more of and today I am just so privileged to help her do just that. Let’s flip the page into Chapter 76 … What You'll Learn: What does an editor do? How do you read horror books when you have anxiety? How do you open a bookshop? What is reading guilt? How can ketamine treat depression? How can we cultivate self care and self awareness if we have anxiety? What are intrusive thoughts? How does depression lie? What is a mental health toolkit? What is dollhouse therapy? How can we talk to our kids about mental illness? You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/76  Leave us a voicemail. How to Ace the Money Conversation with Coaching Prospects

This episode is inspired by brilliant coaches everywhere who, no matter how many skills and talents they bring to the table, are afraid to own their worth and go boldly into the money conversation. Show notes can be found at prosperouscoach.com/122.Take On The CEO Role and Own Your ValueChances are you came to coaching from a job where you were paid a salary or an hourly rate. Someone else set that amount. And you received the same basic paycheck over and over. The control was out of your hands. And you probably just did the job without thinking a lot about the money piece. Now, you are the boss. You are the CEO. You decide how much you charge for your services, how much you earn and when you pay yourself. It’s time to make that mindset shift. Own your role as CEO of your business.Have you done that yet? You’ll be amazed at the difference in your self-esteem when you do.If you take on that role with enthusiasm, you’ll pay yourself well. You’ll stop doubting your value and thinking small.Look, I get it. I started out doing group coaching at $10 per person for a 3 hour face to face experience. That meant I was earning about $27/hour. But really less because it didn’t take into account all the time I spent developing my program and marketing to attract prospects. My first year as a coach I only made $5000. That’s not a living. That’s a hobby. You decide if you have a hobby or a serious business. You make that happen. There’s a fear, right? It seems more strategic somehow to charge low amounts. As if you’ll have less rejection. As if lower prices will attract ideal clients. That’s a lie you’re telling yourself. Valuing yourself less doesn’t make prospects value your services more. And I have proof that higher prices enroll more ideal clients with less hesitation. There’s an old story in your mind. Lessons you learned when you were young about value and money drive your decision about how much your services are worth. You may think it will take years to change your story. But actually you can make that shift in a moment.I’m diverged from my topic today because I’m passionate about this. This episode isn’t about how much you charge. For help with that see episode #60 How to Price Your Signature Coaching Program. It’s also not about how to raise your fees, which you can find in episode #57.This episode is about how to approach and then ace the money conversation in a Discovery Call — which is an enrollment opportunity that you set up with coaching prospects.Ace the Money Conversation with 5 TipsBy the way, the Discovery Call is not a free sample coaching session.Sample sessions are for brand new coaches trying to fulfill the requirements for certification. It’s a great way to learn how to coach, but honestly not an effective approach to enroll ideal clients who will pay well, stay longer and refer more ideal clients. So there you are in the Discovery Call, you’ve asked some powerful questions to reveal what’s top of mind for your prospect. What specifically do they want so much that they are inspired to invest in your help? What’s been in the way of those goals that’s costing them time, heartache … maybe even lost opportunities? So now you say “Are you ready to hear how I help my clients?” You finish that sentence with the specific g

Saunders writes bodies, and his readers wear them.” Yes! That’s how I feel, too. Which is what made it such an immense pleasure to sit down with the humble genius that is George Saunders. Don’t take the genius label from me! He’s won a MacArthur Genius Grant, Guggenheim Fellowship, PEN/Malamud Prize and been named to Time’s 100 Most Influential People. He won the Man Booker for the mesmerizing otherworldly masterpiece Lincoln in the Bardo, and every time I read his short story collections Pastoralia and Tenth of December they just crack my heart wide open. And, just to extend the literary resume here, his most recent book A Swim in the Pond in the Rain is simply the best book on writing I have ever read. I highly recommend it to all writers. George Saunders has also been a Professor in Creative Writing at Syracuse University since 1997. Cheryl Strayed, our guest in Chapter 69, is one of hundreds who had George as a teacher and calls him a mentor today. Please enjoy this wide-ranging conversation discussing the computer we are all trapped inside, reading as a life project, how we process reality, practicing Buddhism, the world as a corrective force, delivering payoff, staying grounded, cultivating a love of literature in children, harnessing our shadow selves, quieting mental rumination, aiming our spigots, and much, much more … . The wisdom of George Saunders offers a true masterclass on writing, on living, on life. Let’s flip the page into Chapter 75 … What You'll Learn: How does our brain process reality? How do writers justify the non normative and guarantee pay off? What is a reading project? How does death amplify life? What is the self? What is efficiency in writing? How should we stay grounded despite success? When should writers compare themselves to the masters? How should we think about kindness? What can we learn from Buddhism? What is an innate tendency of mind? How can parents cultivate a love of literature in their kids? How can we channel our different mental states to be creative? How does exploring one’s dark side or subconscious impact one’s writing? How can the minutiae of editing save a writer? How can we learn to live more freely?   You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/75  Leave us a voicemail. I love you, 3 Bookers. The deepening connection and trust in this community constantly blows me away. It picks me up when I’m down, it’s a barrel of nerdy laughs, it helps me scratch a lot of itches in my brain. And it’s been truly great friendship through the pandemic. I mean, End of the Podcast Club, Cover to Cover Club, and Secret Club? Where you have to find a hidden password? And then send cash in the mail to a secret address? I didn’t think anyone would join these ridiculous things! You leave so many voicemails at 1-833-READ-A-LOT, you mail letters we read on the show, and you leave the hundreds of reviews that I try really, really hard not to care about and yet still shamefully, biologically kind of do. We get the joyful pleasure of going on an adventure and of braiding together our invisible reading lives. I have so many ideas for deepening this connection over the years and I want to introduce one today. For the last ten years of 3 Books, I plan to release a special Bookmark on the exact minute of every single solstice and equinox. That's today! The sun is right over the equator and day and night are just about equal lengths. We will play the theme song backwards and explore a different side-trail on our shared path. It might be a speech, a reflection, or some alternate type of ... other. The first Bookmark drops today. And it’s a conversation between me and my friend Nora McInerny on her wonderful, wonderful podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking.  I hope you’ll check it out and let me know what you think. Would love your feedback and thoughts! Neil   3 Books is a completely insane and totally epic 15-year-long quest to uncover and discuss the 1000 most formative books in the world.
