The idea of “surface self-care” versus “true self-care” is powerful. So often we see self-care presented as a quick fix: a spa day, some skincare, or a cup of tea. But those are just the surface layers, and true self-care is about the deeper, ongoing practices that nourish your mind, body, and soul. I think the idea of self-worth is key here too—if we don't build it from within, those surface-level acts may not fulfill us in the long run. In this video, I'll walk you through the difference between surface-level self-care (think spa days or skin treatments) and true self-care that nourishes your body, mind, and soul. We'll dive into four key areas of self-care that I'm prioritizing right now:
I don't make hard and fast new year's resolutions. I do make goals, set intentions and try live my days dong things that take me closer to how I want to feel, or toward how I see my future. It's not easy. One of the ways I do this is to have a monthly intention. Its a sign of growth when you can take a good look at yourself and laugh. When you can forgive yourself for making mistakes and just be you. In this episode I talk about change. Change in this podcast, my body, my thoughts about nutrition + non diet (a bit - more to come). While I love to talk about nutrition and midlife, I realize how much SPACE we need to transition into this age and stage. We need to give ourselves this space. Even if it means being inconsistent. I want us all to stop punishing ourselves for not being Pinterest perfect, OK? And while I still want to talk about nutrition and health - there's so much more to wellness than food. Picking a word of the year helps you have an emotional anchor to the goals you are setting at ANY time of the year. This episode shares the origin of the ONE WORD concept (book linked below, not an affiliate link) and how I chose this years word. Internal or intrinsic motivation is needed to get to your goals. How will you keep that internal fire going, when it threatens to die? Subscribe, walk and talk with me, to end 2023! Drown out the weight loss noise! This episode invites you to examine what you need to LET GO of to make room for the new in 2023. Besides my career as a demtal hygienist, I recently let go of breast implants that were causing me health issues. It feels awkward to share this when women are losing their lives to breast cancer. Women choose to give up their breasts to save their lives. Yet many women my age are hanging on to implants for fear of losing their body shape, percieved sexiness, confidence, and to maintain a body image standard set by all kinds of industries. I have felt selfish sharing this experience. I acknowledge that I am in a place of privledge to have had the choice of plastic surgery. Would I choose it again? If I had not done the work on myself, the work of acceptance, of aging, of changing, of continuing to dig into and accept WHO I AM, I might have. I'd love to hear your feedback on this episode. Menopause, and perimenopause, can be stressful. Many women have increased feelings of anxiety, when entering the transition to menopause. Correne Omland, from Spirea Herbs, is back on the podcast to talk about herbal remedies to calm the mind and the nervous system. We talk about stress, and women, and how this may be amplified for us, because of the environment we live in. Being human means that we have parts of us we might not be so keen on. We don't have to change ourselves all the time, but we may want to continue to GROW. And that takes some change. This post and episode is for you if You are wondering why you can't change a habit. You bounce back and forth between changing what you eat or how you exercise, only to go back to your old way of doing things. You tell yourself you need to “get it together” and “get more willpower”. NO. You feel bad about yourself when you don't change. You feel STUCK trying to change. Many of you are contemplating your health and your goals, for the coming year, in the form of a New Year's Resolution. 80% of New Year's Resolutions are bound to fail. Why is this, do you think? It takes work to change. Change gets uncomfortable. There is some stress involved in change. I'm taking a behavior change model, called the Stages of Change, (the Transtheoretical Model of Change), and looking at how we can apply it to our regular, every day lives. This is ESPECIALLY powerful if you want to be a more conscious eater. Hunger 101: Interrupt Those Cravings Create a Fresh Start for Yourself! What IS the Non Diet Approach? The wellness world is fun. And polarizing. Health and wellness can be so informative and also confusing. Go beyond the advice to do this, NOT that and get curious. What aligns with you? What is accessible? What makes sense? Much of the nutrition advice out there tells us to eat this, NOT that. Or DO this, NOT that. Eat honey, NOT refined sugar. Drink dandelion beverages and mushroom coffee, NOT regular coffee or tea. Fast, NOT breakfast. This episode was inspired by one client who shared her experience with the milk cleanse, another client who was crying with me over her guilt of eating bread, and the topic of parasite cleansing. It brings up something that's been on my heart for a while and that I have shared on and off on IG. I'm concenred about the polarization and idea bashing of others in the wellness world. What if we started holding space for multiple ideas? From energy work to eating bread, there can be space for discussion and choice. What IS the Non Diet Approach? Take the 20 Minute Beginner Class!
