In this episode, we chat with JR Brandt of Montana, an acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) survivor, about his journey through diagnosis, treatment, and living with chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). JR shares his initial diagnosis story, describing how what he thought was a minor infection led to a leukemia diagnosis complicated by the Philadelphia Positive chromosome. He underwent 26 days of chemotherapy and was eventually cleared for a bone marrow stem cell transplant at Stanford University in March 2017.JR discusses the onset of chronic GVHD symptoms about a year after his transplant, beginning with skin changes. He was treated with Rituxan infusions, which provided temporary relief. Over the years, as symptoms re-emerged, JR continued Rituxan treatments and adjusted his care plan, even after moving from California to Montana. He highlights the importance of finding and continuing care with familiar healthcare professionals, like his physician who (fortunately) moved to Billings Clinic.Beyond skin issues, JR describes experiencing joint tightness, dry eyes, dysphagia, and dry mouth. He mentions practical solutions like using Biotene toothpaste for dry mouth and preservative-free Refresh Plus eyedrops for dry eyes. JR also shares the importance of physical and occupational therapy, which helped him develop a personalized exercise routine. Over time, he transitioned to aquatic aerobics and massage therapy, finding these methods more effective for managing his symptoms.JR emphasizes the significance of staying active, despite physical limitations, by adapting activities like biking with an e-bike and engaging in water aerobics. He also discusses the importance of sun protection and practical tips for managing GVHD symptoms, like using a sun hat and sunblock.JR addresses the mental health challenges of living with chronic illness, equating his experiences to PTSD and stressing the importance of setting goals and making plans to stay motivated. He shares how maintaining an active lifestyle and staying connected with his family helps him manage anxiety and stress. When discussing his career, JR explains how his background in healthcare was both a benefit and a challenge. He advises others with disabilities to utilize vocational rehabilitation services to explore new career paths. JR also encourages being your own patient advocate, ensuring all medical information is shared among healthcare providers to provide comprehensive care.JR concludes with the importance of using available resources, like the Americans with Disabilities Act, for mobility aids and other accommodations (link below). He highlights the need for continuous learning and resourcefulness in managing chronic GVHD and living life to the fullest. The conundrum we are currently facing is that dry mouth - xerostomia - isn't just "dry mouth", it is a wide range of severity and accompanying symptoms. We cant treat everyone the same, and we are learning that the products from 20 years ago, maybe aren't keeping up with the symptoms manifesting in today's patient. What should we do? In this episode we answer some key questions: What is the prevalence of dry mouth in our patients; how often should we expect to see our patients presenting with them? Is there an increase in prevalence or just better clinical detection? What are the top reasons people experience xerostomic effects? Do patients understand how much dry mouth they really have? Water vs Lipid based products for our patients - which is better? How important is the role of the RDH in detection? Repeat guest Anna Marie Gough comes on to talk: mouth taping dry mouth, poor sleep breathwork the science behind breathing right and loads more Anna Marie Gough started her coaching method with one goal in mind: to help people find calm, happiness and balance in their work, relationships, and life. And she does a great job at that. I was so pleased to have her on earlier this year to improve my ice bath game... now she's back to sort out my breathing. Check out Anna's half and full day retreats with healing guidance, breathwork and cold water therapy in Buckinghamshire https://www.annamgough.com/ THIS SHOW IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: BiOptimizers — Four out of five Americans are magnesium deficient, and almost everyone is at suboptimal levels. That's a big problem because magnesium is involved in more than 600 biochemical reactions in your body. Now here's what most people DON'T know: taking just any magnesium supplement won't solve your problem because most supplements use the cheapest kinds that your body can't use or absorb. That's why I exclusively recommend Magnesium Breakthrough. It's the only full-spectrum magnesium supplement with seven unique forms of magnesium that your body can actually use and absorb. When you get all seven critical forms of magnesium, pretty much every function in your body gets upgraded. From your brain to your sleep, pain, inflammation and less stress. We are back from LMT Lab Day Chicago 2023 with an episode we recorded before the epic event. Dr. Mark Nation is a prosthodontist out of Louisville, Kentucky in a practice called Advanced Dental Solution (https://adslouisville.com/)s. Dr. Nation is known for the one to fix the unproperly planned full arch restorations. Working with all the ones that "don't work", he is able to work with patients to get them restored the way they should. Dr. Nation talks about getting into Oral Surgery, his time in school, understanding how the patient's symptoms or complaints are not just teeth, and how doctors and labs can work together to better treatment plan and restore full arches. The new PrograScan PS3 and PS5 (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us/products/digital-equipment/prograscan-ps5-and-ps3-laborscanner) provide true-to-detail, high-resolution and accurate scans for coordinated digital workflows that are precise, fast, and always accurate. The PS3 and PS5 are powered by the popular and intuitive DentalCAD software from Exocad (https://exocad.com/). Whether you are looking for your first scanner, to upgrade or add to your existing scanners, the PrograScan may be the one for you. Reach out to your friendly Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) sales representative to select a scanner that matches the needs of your lab Today and tell them you heard about it on the podcast! Does your lab use Magic Touch? If not, you should think about switching just so you can use icortica (https://icortica.com/). Icortica is a program that uses all the data you already collect in Magic Touch and puts it in one easy to see, use, and understand dashboard. Look at every account and see trends, sales, notes, payments, and even remake percentages. Use the data you already have to take your lab and your customer service to the next level. Elvis uses it daily and swears it is a huge part to his success working at the lab. Head over to icortica.com/voices (https://icortica.com/voices-from-the-bench/) to learn more or send an email to Rob Nazzal at rob@icortica.com and tell him you heard about it on Voices From the Bench! Special Guest: Dr. Mark Nation.
