Nathan Jones, founder and CEO of Xlear, Inc., reveals xylitol's role in supporting oral and nasal “gateway” microbiomes by selectively starving acid-producing Strep mutans rather than indiscriminately killing bacteria, and warns that harsh mouthwashes can disrupt beneficial oral bacteria linked to nitric oxide production and possibly blood pressure. Jones outlines Spry and Xlear products (gum, mints, toothpaste, mouthwash, dry-mouth “Rain,” and upcoming gummy candies, a new dental probiotic with added nutrients, and a direct-to-consumer oral bacteria test kit with pre/post tracking). He discusses diet, emphasizing sugar as a key driver of cavities and criticizing limited focus on sugar in a Surgeon General oral health report. In part two, Jones describes ongoing and planned legal actions against the FTC over shifting evidentiary standards and reputational damage, then reviews Xlear's allergy and respiratory approach via nasal hygiene, product tiers (regular, Max with quercetin, Rescue botanicals, and a decongestant), and a forthcoming ectoine-based spray to support mucus barrier integrity.

Here is a link to Biotene on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4tuKAoj In this episode (watch here on YouTube), we break down why saliva problems occur in Parkinson's, how they affect speech, swallowing, comfort, and confidence, and why oral health matters far more than most people realize. We cover: • Dry mouth vs. drooling in Parkinson's • Why both problems can happen at the same time • How saliva issues affect communication and swallowing • Oral bacteria, dental health, and aspiration risk • Why oral care is so important in Parkinson's • Practical strategies to help manage these symptoms safely We also explain the important connection between oral health and aspiration pneumonia risk, one of the most serious complications associated with swallowing difficulties. If you or someone you care about is dealing with drooling, dry mouth, coughing during meals, or frequent throat clearing, this episode will help connect the dots and provide practical next steps.

Oral Health, Inflammation, and Periodontal Disease: Dr. William Levine, a board-certified periodontist and chief scientist at Peri Active Oral Rinse, offers a deep-dive on periodontal disease as an infectious inflammatory condition with autoimmune-like tissue destruction. It affects over 50% of U.S. adults over 35 and rises with age. He details bidirectional links between gum disease and systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and some dementias, and notes signs such as bleeding, pain, swelling, loose or shifting teeth, and gum recession. Levine explains plaque, dysbiosis, and biofilms, emphasizing mechanical plaque removal to preserve a healthy oral microbiome. Standard care includes scaling and root planing, possible surgery, and lasers; antiseptic rinses like chlorhexidine can be harsh and limited against biofilms. Levine describes a plant-bioactive rinse (gotu kola, echinacea, elderberry) designed to reduce harmful bacteria, penetrate gums, lower inflammation, and promote repair; xylitol may help via saliva stimulation. He also addresses smoking, dry mouth, fluoride toothpaste, interdental cleaning, and osteoporotic drugs' dental risks.

Get Dr. Vonda's latest insights on strength, bone health, longevity, and aging with power delivered straight to your inbox. Join her free health & longevity newsletter here: https://www.drvondawright.com/resources/aging-longevity   There's a quiet shift many women notice in midlife that rarely gets talked about in the doctor's office, changes in their mouth. Gums that feel more sensitive. Teeth that suddenly seem fragile. Dryness, inflammation, or dental issues that appear despite "doing everything right." I sat down with Dr. Carlos Melendez, a general dentist and practice owner, to talk about what really happens to oral health during perimenopause and menopause, and why women are so often left without explanation when changes begin. Women are frequently told that dental issues are about hygiene alone, or that worsening gum or tooth problems are just "bad luck." This conversation matters because it reframes oral health as part of whole-body health. When women understand the hormonal and physiological drivers behind these changes, they're empowered to protect not just their smiles, but their overall health as they age.   We examine how this topic shows up in daily life: - How hormonal shifts in menopause affect gum tissue, bone, and oral inflammation - Why dry mouth becomes more common and why it matters for tooth and gum health - The connection between estrogen loss, bone density, and jawbone health - How chronic inflammation in the mouth can impact whole-body health - Why routine dental changes in midlife deserve deeper evaluation, not dismissal - How preventive dental care needs to evolve during perimenopause and menopause - Why collaboration between medical and dental care is essential for aging well About Dr. Carlos Melendez: Dr. Carlos Melendez is a general dentist and practice owner with extensive experience caring for adult patients across all life stages. His work focuses on preventive care, patient education, and understanding how systemic health directly impacts oral health, especially in midlife and beyond. In this episode, we chat with JR Brandt of Montana, an acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) survivor, about his journey through diagnosis, treatment, and living with chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). JR shares his initial diagnosis story, describing how what he thought was a minor infection led to a leukemia diagnosis complicated by the Philadelphia Positive chromosome. He underwent 26 days of chemotherapy and was eventually cleared for a bone marrow stem cell transplant at Stanford University in March 2017.JR discusses the onset of chronic GVHD symptoms about a year after his transplant, beginning with skin changes. He was treated with Rituxan infusions, which provided temporary relief. Over the years, as symptoms re-emerged, JR continued Rituxan treatments and adjusted his care plan, even after moving from California to Montana. He highlights the importance of finding and continuing care with familiar healthcare professionals, like his physician who (fortunately) moved to Billings Clinic.Beyond skin issues, JR describes experiencing joint tightness, dry eyes, dysphagia, and dry mouth. He mentions practical solutions like using Biotene toothpaste for dry mouth and preservative-free Refresh Plus eyedrops for dry eyes. JR also shares the importance of physical and occupational therapy, which helped him develop a personalized exercise routine. Over time, he transitioned to aquatic aerobics and massage therapy, finding these methods more effective for managing his symptoms.JR emphasizes the significance of staying active, despite physical limitations, by adapting activities like biking with an e-bike and engaging in water aerobics. He also discusses the importance of sun protection and practical tips for managing GVHD symptoms, like using a sun hat and sunblock.JR addresses the mental health challenges of living with chronic illness, equating his experiences to PTSD and stressing the importance of setting goals and making plans to stay motivated. He shares how maintaining an active lifestyle and staying connected with his family helps him manage anxiety and stress. When discussing his career, JR explains how his background in healthcare was both a benefit and a challenge. He advises others with disabilities to utilize vocational rehabilitation services to explore new career paths. JR also encourages being your own patient advocate, ensuring all medical information is shared among healthcare providers to provide comprehensive care.JR concludes with the importance of using available resources, like the Americans with Disabilities Act, for mobility aids and other accommodations (link below). The conversation spirals into chaotic territory, touching on everything from embarrassing nudist magazine photoshoots to their struggles with addiction, where Bobby hilariously admits to his gambling problem and past smoking habits. As they discuss body image and confidence, the duo doesn't shy away from poking fun at their own quirks and insecurities, leading to laugh-out-loud moments about bread bowls, dry mouth nightmares, and the awkwardness of hook-ups. They also tackle serious topics with their signature humor, including a heartfelt voicemail about autism and the challenges of growing up undiagnosed. The episode is peppered with random asides, such as bizarre encounters with elderly women at an ice cream shop, musings on human motivation driven by envy, lust, and jealousy, and a hilarious critique of Columbus trying to be a "big city." Bobby and Jim's dynamic banter, combined with their no-holds-barred commentary, makes this episode a rollercoaster of comedy and candidness.Bobby was out of control so get ready. Support the Show.As always you can write us at nowellpodcast@gmail.com or call us at ‪(614) 721-5336‬ and tell us your Not Wells of the week InstagramTwitterBobby's Only FansHelp us continue to grow and create amazing content, like a live tour or just help fund some new headphones when needed. The conundrum we are currently facing is that dry mouth - xerostomia - isn't just "dry mouth", it is a wide range of severity and accompanying symptoms. We cant treat everyone the same, and we are learning that the products from 20 years ago, maybe aren't keeping up with the symptoms manifesting in today's patient. What should we do? In this episode we answer some key questions: What is the prevalence of dry mouth in our patients; how often should we expect to see our patients presenting with them? Is there an increase in prevalence or just better clinical detection? What are the top reasons people experience xerostomic effects? Do patients understand how much dry mouth they really have?  Water vs Lipid based products for our patients - which is better? How important is the role of the RDH in detection? That's a big problem because magnesium is involved in more than 600 biochemical reactions in your body. Now here's what most people DON'T know: taking just any magnesium supplement won't solve your problem because most supplements use the cheapest kinds that your body can't use or absorb. That's why I exclusively recommend Magnesium Breakthrough. It's the only full-spectrum magnesium supplement with seven unique forms of magnesium that your body can actually use and absorb. When you get all seven critical forms of magnesium, pretty much every function in your body gets upgraded. From your brain to your sleep, pain, inflammation and less stress.
