In the penultimate episode of the season, we're diving headfirst into the dark fantasy movie that defined 80s childhoods (for some of us, Dan included, maybe?) but was a complete box-office flop: Labyrinth (1986). Settle in for spoilers, swearing, and probably a tangent or two about where babies go when Jareth steals them. Was it just a logistical nightmare with all those puppets, animals, and babies? Yes. Does Jareth's portrayal raise some eyebrows today? Absolutely, he's the villain, you muppet! But despite its initial failure as a movie that flopped at the box-office, Labyrinth's unique blend of whimsy, darkness, and catchy songs (dance, magic, dance!) has cemented its status as a cult classic. We talk about the worm, the door knockers, the Bog of Eternal Stench, and why Jim Henson took the flop so hard. What to expect from this episode: Speculation on the film's deeper themes and interpretations, from it being a coming-of-age story about Sarah letting go of childhood things, an anti-hoarding message via the Garbage Lady, a metaphor for life's journey and friendship, or even the darker fan theory that the entire event is a result of Sarah's mental illness A deep dive into the incredible puppet work and practical effects, highlighting characters like Hoggle and the technical challenges of the "Swiss cheese" set Discussion about the confirmed sequel in development, touching on previous directors attached (Scott Derrickson, Fede Alvarez) and the current attachment of Robert Eggers (EGGERS!) Dan & Manny welcome Jen & P.T. from The Long Take Review to put Jim Henson's classic Labyrinth to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “We might spend the most time on fart jokes.” -P.T. Much like the topic of this episode, the conversation is a collection of twists, turns, deceptions, off-color fart jokes, confusion about David Bowie's tights, and hallucinations. The gang goes into their love of Henson's use practical effects, they talk about all the memorable characters, the film's lasting impact on cinematic history, and did we say fart jokes. One of Dave's childhood favorites, despite a fair sledding from mates, is up for scrutiny this week! And with a 16 year old Jennifer Connely heading up against a middle aged pop star, what could possibly go wrong? directed by Jim Henson, was an ambitious blend of puppetry, live-action, and cutting-edge visual effects for its time. The film was a collaboration between Henson and executive producer George Lucas, with a screenplay by Monty Python's Terry Jones. Conceptual artist Brian Froud, known for his work on The Dark Crystal, played a significant role in designing the fantastical creatures and the world of the labyrinth itself. The movie's central character, Jareth the Goblin King, was brought to life by David Bowie, who also contributed original songs to the soundtrack, adding a surreal, musical dimension to the film. With a cast that included young Jennifer Connelly and over 100 puppets, the production involved complex puppetry, animatronics, and special effects to bring the magical world to life. The film was shot primarily at Elstree Studios in the UK, where elaborate sets were built to depict the vast, dreamlike maze. Henson's Creature Shop faced technical challenges, especially with creating characters like Hoggle, a puppet requiring multiple operators to control its facial expressions and movements. Though the film was not a box office success upon release, Labyrinth gained a devoted cult following over the years, praised for its imaginative design, memorable characters, and Bowie's iconic performance. The film's mix of fantasy, music, and pioneering practical effects has since solidified its place as a beloved classic in fantasy cinema. When her wish is granted and Jareth kidnaps Toby, Sarah has 13 hours to navigate a vast, magical labyrinth to save him before he is turned into a goblin. Along the way, she encounters a host of strange creatures and overcomes various challenges, learning about bravery and friendship. With the deadline approaching, both prosecutors and the children's father accuse Hoggle of faking it, trying to run out the clock and avoid prison. In the podcast “Unrestorable,” journalists Sarah Treleaven and Beth Karas examine the balance between a father's quest for justice and the rights of the mentally ill in the justice system. Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from The Best Bits Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Will's choice Labyrinth. Labyrinth is a 1986 musical fantasy directed by Jim (The Muppets) Henson and written by Terry (Monty Python) Jones. It stars David Bowie (who also wrote the songs) as Jareth the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly, in her breakout role, as Sarah. After wishing that the goblins come and take away her baby brother Toby, Sarah has to tackle the labyrinth in 13 hours to rescue him or he will turn into a goblin. Along the way she encounters its unusual inhabitants - friends Hoggle, Ludo, Sir Didymus and foes The Firey's and the Bog of Eternal Stench. Hard to believe but Labyrinth was a box office flop and opened to mixed reviews, over the years, due it part to Bowie's legacy, it has firmly become a cult classic and frequently sells out cinema screenings. Labyrinth scores very highly across all Flixwatcher categories, only dropping a few points on small screen to score a very respectable 4.65 overall. Enjoyed this episode? Directed by Jim Henson, executive produced by George Lucas, starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Yet despite that lineup, a total commercial flop that broke the heart of it's creator. Labyrinth is the dictionary definition of a cult classic and luckily Jim Henson lived long enough to see how much people truly loved his dark fairytale. Today on Buzzn The Tower, we'll make our way through the Labyrinth to the castle beyond the Goblin City. It doesn't look that far.. It's further than you think...time is short I'm Mo Shapiro and joining me as always the Hoggle to my Sarah, Max Sanders. And with that, set the clock to thirteen hours and let's get after it!

We're ending our EXCUSE ME, WHAT?! Series of films we JUST CAN'T FRIGGING BELIEVE the others haven't seen with a big one...a GIANT WHIFFED MISS in Katie's film education, 1986's Labyrinth. This film is a seminal work in the canon of Jim Henson, and showcases some of the amazing things that puppetry can do on film...from something as tiny as a wee little worm who offers you tea with the missus, to a swamp filled with buttholes, or even a collection of weird bird fire things who switch arms and legs and heads (while singing). And who better to introduce us to this film (other than Graham, well-known Henson lover) but our special guest -- actor, story animator, former Pixar employee and theater kid to the bone (and obv. friend of the pod) Mr. Kyle McDaniel! Kyle lures your favorite podcasters in with tales of the Goblin King aka David Bowie, reading hidden clues around set design and dress, the beauty of Jennifer Connelly, and why his favorite character in all of this fantasy madness is Hoggle. In a film that bases its story on how much something means to you once its gone, we willingly get lost in the joyful maze that is Labyrinth. So join us in the oubliette (we haven't been able to get out) and get ready for DANCE MAGIC, DANCE! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You remind me of the babe! The babe with the power! The power of voodoo! Few David Bowie fans would cite his songs in the 1986 fantasy epic "Labyrinth" as the best music of his career. But who cares?! Bowie is awesome, and yeah, these songs aren't great, but come on! It's Bowie in a weird AF muppet movie! "Labyrinth," created by Jim Henson and his talented crew of puppeteers, is filled to the castle towers with incredible production design and a massive, varied assortment of strange creatures. The seemingly ageless Jennifer Connelly plays Sarah, a teenager who accidentally wishes her baby brother away and into the arms of a goblin king. Oops! At least he's a pretty sexy goblin king. If you loved "Labyrinth" as a kid, chances are you still love it. If you didn't grow up with it... well... it might be somewhat laborious. Old Millennials Remember Movies hosts Tyler and Angela are on opposite sides of that divide. Is Jareth the Goblin King dreamy? Creepy? Neither? Both? Does the way Sarah solve that confusing door riddle make any sense at all? And how traumatized was that baby actor after being surrounded by all those disgusting goblin puppets? The Old Millennials dive into all that and much more, because this movie is overstuffed with quests! Whatever you think about "Labyrinth," we can probably all agree on the two best elements. 1. David Bowie. 2. The real dog that carries around the puppet dog but is also occasionally a puppet for the close-ups. So sometimes it's puppet-on-dog and sometimes it's puppet-on-puppet. Either way, it's (expletive deleted) awesome! So grab your Hoggle, strap that Ludo, wash your Ambrosius, clear your Didymus and check out our episode on "Labyrinth!" It's that time of the week again, where we go back in time, in order to talk about a pop culture classic!! For this week's episode, we're going back thirty five years, to the year 1986, in order to talk about the David Bowie film, from the mind's of Jim Henson & George Lucas, The Labyrinth. "Teenage Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) journeys through a maze to recover her baby brother (Toby Froud) from a goblin king (David Bowie)." Sarah accidentally gives her baby brother to the Goblin king, and needs to find her way through a labyrinth, in a certain amount of hours, in order to get her baby brother back safely! Along the way, she meets a bevy of weird/different creatures and characters. Two of which end up being close friends of hers, Hoggle & Ludo! How David Bowie was convinced to do this movie, we'll never know, but it's definitely intriguing enough, at least, to give it a watch! A couple of songs here and there make it a musical, and you know that you're usually in for a good time, whenever you hear that Jim Henson has some kind of creations in the movie! 30 years ago, if you were to tell us that one of our favourite movies of all time would feature ridiculous looking puppets, a young woman struggling with the emotional burden of having to grow up, and a tarted up rock star complete with musical acts and dance sequences, we would have called you crazy and stomped off to play with our Transformers and Star Wars toys. 30 years later; 30 years of additional movies, TV shows, books and comics, video games and magazines, and still...very few things come close to the imagination, quality, and brilliance of Labyrinth. Very few properties conjure feelings of awe, excitement, and dread, while thoroughly entertaining and constantly making the audience think of underlying ideas and concepts, the way that Labyrinth does. We'll be the first to admit - this movie isn't for everyone. But we promise you that a more unique, creative and well-executed film you will have a difficult time finding. Travel into the Goblin King's domain with us as we revisit a timeless classic we had almost forgotten about. If you've never seen Labyrinth before, grab your kids and snuggle in for a fun and charming journey, complete with humour, adorable characters, and a magical view of the struggles of growing up. If you've seen Labyrinth before, you can remind yourself of how incredible Jim Henson's creations were, and how much this movie shaped your childhood - even if you didn't think it did. Regardless, you will laugh, you will smile, and you will be entertained. No jokes or self-deprecating commentary in this episode write up; Labyrinth is awesome, and we love every bit of it. Saddle up Ambrosius and ride into battle with us as we talk about things like: Benny is a simple man. A very, shockingly simple man. As such, he absolutely didn't put it together and realize that the entire story was about Sarah ‘s struggle to let go of childhood and grow up Sarah lives with her dad and stepmom, and her younger baby brother is a half brother. It's a level of familial complexity we didn't expect from a movie of the time There are some classic roles that make it almost impossible to imagine anyone else playing them; the Goblin King is one of them. David Bowie is fantastic, and everything about him is perfect for the role The amount of work he put into it, including showing up with complete scores, is a level of dedication no one was expecting. And based on his performance, you can tell he loved every second of it Yes, they're Muppets. Yes, real humans acting alongside them makes this even more abundantly clear. And yes, they look incredible and suit the movie perfectly  With the exception of one song (YOU know which one we're talking about) the musical numbers are fun and whimsical Unbelievably, the character of Hoggle has a full character development arc, and is deeper and more sympathetic than most characters in movies we've reviewed to date (*cough* Remo *cough*) We are almost positive that Jim Henson made Ambrosius specifically for Benny
