Brews and Tiny Teeth, The Unfiltered Pediatric Dentistry Podcast
Dr. Marc Soelberg is a pediatric dentist who recently did a scratch start in Post Falls, Idaho. After several years of associating without a partnership offer, Dr. Soelberg decided to open his practice in a growing rural town in northern Idaho. In this episode, we talk all about what opening a practice in 2024 looks like. He shares his challenges with obtaining a loan big enough to cover the cost of an office that's a functional size. We also discuss what marketing strategies worked best to obtain new patients, along with sharing some mistakes he made along the way.
Eric Soelberg was a high school athlete-turned-young husband and father and, like many on the family, marriage, and career track, he lost sight of himself and his own health. Food became an escape and a way to numb, and in this episode, Soelberg vulnerably shares some of those moments when he realized he had fallen into unhealthy eating behaviors and addiction. Not only was he hiding food, but he was visiting fast food drive-thrus multiple times in a day – feeling the shame, but also satisfying the cravings.Yes, he watched Forks over Knives and read the China Study – and it all made sense – but as we know all too well, having the information and making lasting change are two different things. It wasn't until 2021 when he started feeling neuropathy and tingling in his toes and fingers that something clicked. He was 260lbs. Driven by a newfound commitment to health, Eric sought guidance and he shares his recipes for regaining his health and life. Whole plant-based food is the grounding element, but it's about so much more for him now, including education, community, and daily self-reflection. Even in the 19th century, Brigham Young Academy (later Brigham Young University) welcomed students of both sexes, all nationalities, religions, races and colors. Nearly from the start, it included women, which made it distinctive among other American higher-education institutions. And the school — owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — had a small but consistent nonwhite student population. That included the school's first Black graduate, Norman Wilson (not a Latter-day Saint), who earned his degree in 1939. Grace Ann Soelberg curated a BYU exhibit honoring Wilson. She also explored how Black students were treated at the school, and how they were depicted, including examples of blackface, in its yearbooks from 1911 to 1985. On this week's show, Soelberg, now a graduate student at the University of Utah, discusses her findings.

Tune in for my conversation with Rebecca Soelberg - acting coach, vocal coach, professional choral singer, and teacher of the Emoverity method: an acting curriculum that teaches performers how to access emotions physiologically rather than relying on memory recall. We talk all about why using our own memories to create emotional authenticity on stage can be damaging to the mental and emotional health of performers. We go into detail about how we can bring more awareness to how emotions feel in the body to still create them while acting, and also how to get out of that emotional state. These are skills that are not only valuable for performers but for anyone that feels reactive to and out-of-touch with their emotions. To get in touch with Rebecca, learn about Emoverity, or sign up for a class, find her on Instagram: @emoverity_for_performersTo get on my email list to receive FREE positive affirmation warm-ups on Wednesdays, sign up HERE.

My friends Jacob Rugh, Michael Wood and Grace Soelberg (all from the Department of Sociology at BYU) join us to talk about their new peer-reviewed and scholarly published research to better understanding the experience of Black Latter-day Saints. The research article is called “Making Space Behind the Veil: Black Agency within a Predominantly White Religion” in the Journal of Scientific Study of Religion (see show notes to access the article). In the podcast Jacob, Michael and Grace give powerful insights and examples to better understand the experience of Black Latter-day Saints—including the concept of W.E.B. Du Bois's concept of ‘twoness.' They also talk about why they embarked on this groundbreaking research effort and their hopes on how the findings can help improve the experience and better value the contributions of Black Latter-day Saints. I was so moved listening to these three authors. The principles and insights help me new tools and perspectives to help better create Zion, see and address racism within myself, and the work we still need to do in our community. I encourage everyone to listen to his episode and check out their research. Thank you, Jacob, Michael, and Grace, for your needed voice in our community! “Does this align with the things that we as a family value? Does this give us the choices that we want in five or ten years? I think back to this trip that my family just took. Having a newborn at 45 is life changing. It's life changing at any point, but I want to spend all the time that I can with Wes while he's young. And if that means I need to work less and earn less, I'm willing to do it. And thankfully we're at a point in our careers and in our financial lives where that's a choice we can make, where my most important priority, which is time with family, is something that we can actually do.” -Dr. Cobin Soelberg, M.D., J.D., Owner of Greeley Wealth Management How can physicians achieve financial independence and financial freedom in a way that identifies with purpose and value in their life? For Dr. Cobin Soelberg, that purpose is family. Through today's conversation with DocWorking CEO and cohost of the podcast, Dr. Jen Barna, Dr. Soelberg brings his expertise as a physician and owner of Greeley Wealth Management. Dr. Soelberg helps physicians to climb out of debt and find financial independence and stability by first defining their own values and intentions. In today's episode, Dr. Barna and Dr. Soelberg recognize and empathize with the common expectations for doctors to make extravagant financial purchases once they financially “can.” Dr. Barna and Dr. Soelberg talk about the distinction between making major purchases based on what other people value versus exploring one's own values, and how taking the time to clarify what you truly value, and your intentions, can be a game changer that can set you up for reaching your long term financial goals. Listen to today's podcast to learn how you can change your mindset towards your finances, and most importantly, how you can build the life you truly want. Today I'm talking about Jeff Soelberg, an amputee peer visitor, activist, and founder of the Jeff Giving a Hand Foundation. After losing three of his fingers in an industrial accident, Jeff has become a prominent advocate for amputees and how amputation affects all aspects of a person's life. “Life happens when you adapt,” according to Jeff, and he believes in the resilience of the human spirit. On July 6th, 2016, Jeff was in an industrial accident that resulted in the loss of three of his fingers, along with tendon and nerve damage up to his elbow on his dominant hand. He had been shining a pump shaft when his glove got caught and his hand was pulled in to the wrist. Despite his shock, Jeff was able to instruct his coworkers and the on-site nurse on what to do and was soon taken to the hospital for surgery. Jeff underwent a total of 9 surgeries, 7 of them in the first 9 months. He recalls looking at his hand while waiting several hours in the hospital, knowing that his fingers weren't there but not registering where they were. He describes the shock response as a sort of tunnel vision, and after leaving the hospital he was forced to relearn everyday functions while also dealing with the physical, emotional, and financial toll of his accident. Fingers are medically labeled as cosmetic, not essential. Jeff's responds that anyone with ten fingers can't tell him what is or isn't essential. It may only be a finger, but we do so much with our fingers from dawn to dusk. Part of his work has been advocating to insurance agencies in order to increase the availability of prosthetics for amputees, without clients paying thousands of dollars. Recently, Jeff had the opportunity to go to London and educate a group of doctors on the necessity of finger prosthetics. Despite the advancements in prosthetic technology, the majority of hand surgeons are completely unaware of what prosthetics are available for the people they treat, and therefore won't even think to prescribe a prosthetic. Jeff asked the group, “Where would you be without your fingers?” Education is a simple but incredibly important part of advocacy for amputees. The Jeff Giving a Hand Foundation has an emphasis on physical fitness and living life as an amputee. If life has handed you a challenge, it's an opportunity to step back and figure things out. For those struggling mentally, Jeff advises the basics: just try. Go for a short walk, do something to elevate your heart rate, as sitting at home will only take you to dark places. Looking to the future, Jeff plans to continue doing everything he can to make prosthetics available to everyone who needs them. When Jeff first lost his fingers, he was unable to look at his hand when the doctor removed the bandage. Months later, he showed the same doctor a video of his most recent deadlift, and the doctor replied, “I always knew you had it in you.” Jeff hopes listeners know that a dark situation can be turned into something better, and encourages them to meet everyone with empathy and acceptance, whether their impairments are physical or invisible.Listen in to learn more about para-athletes and competitions, types of finger prosthetics, and how Jeff adapted and adjusted to life after his amputation. Can you imagine being in the middle of med school and deciding that you'd really like to get a law degree as well? Cobin Soelberg did just that and then when he was done with law, he came back to get his medical degree and began practicing in anesthesiology. He's now helping physicians create sustainable money plans that support their lives and dreams. When I met Cobin, I was drawn to his sincerity and his genuine need to help physicians with their money. I mean let's get real, money is hard. Trusting someone with your money or to provide you with good money advice, is even harder. Here's the deal, as women, and especially as women physicians, we have a lot on our plates. Instead we need trusted money partners who provide us with the facts and advice we need to make stellar money decisions. Cobin is one of those partners. Listen as he shares his story and his insights on what we as women physicians can do to grow our wealth while maintaining our sanity. It's not always fun or easy, but what we can do with our money when it's properly managed is truly life changing. What money dreams and goals do you have? “I really always tried to explore that curiosity and really see where it took me.” Dr. Cobin Soelberg In this episode: [01:59] Welcome to the show, Dr. Cobin Soelberg! Adaptive helping the adaptive! Would you donate your organ? What’s stopping you from donating a piece of your body to another person? This is an amazing story that deserves more attention. Jeff Soelberg (amputee and founder of Jeff Giving a Hand) talks about preparing to donate his kidney to another amputee next week even in the midst of the peak of coronavirus. Jeff tells us what is about to happen, why he’s donating, and bunch more. About Jeff Soelberg In July 2016, Jeff was in a work accident that resulted in a partial hand amputation. During this new beginning he searched for help in navigating his new life. While there are resources out there, they were often hard to find. After traveling and competing within the adaptive community—and now that he knows the territory more—Jeff wants to change that. He has seen the strength in this community, but he has also noticed the need for more information and access to better resources. This website serves that need. More about Jeff Giving a Hand Jeff Giving a Hand is a community website that provides resources for adaptive people—whether these resources are training videos, counselors, doctors, or more. Sometimes we don't realize how capable we are until we simply try. That's the message at the heart of today's BITE, which features a story by Charlotte Blake-Alston entitled, "The Ant and the Crumb". Sam is joined in the studio by Colton Soelberg.
In this highlights episode, Meredith Soelberg and Brooke Mitchell describe their experience as employees in an insurance-based physical therapy practice that had to “weather the storm” of massive reimbursement cuts. The impact of those cuts made it apparent that they'd have to change their business model or face economic ruin. The cash-based practice model seemed to be the obvious solution, so the decision was made to give it a try. Meredith and Brook explain exactly how the transition to cash-based was managed so the practice could remain viable for the long term. This information is especially relevant in light of the recent announcement of the coming 8% cuts to Medicare reimbursements for physical therapy services that will soon leave many practices facing similar situations. Their ultimate success with the cash-based practice model as employees helped prepare them to open their own out-of-network practice, a concierge physical therapy and fitness facility that combines rehabilitation and wellness services. Their highly successful California clinic has grown to employ multiple physical therapists, personal trainers, Pilates instructors, and massage therapists. This “highlight” is from a full episode on how to succeed with a cash-practice partnership.

MLM insider interview is a new segment as a part of the Do essential chat series where we interview leaders and up in coming leaders in the network marketing industry. Up first is the long awaited podcast interview with Shari Soelberg. She has been a great mentor to me and many others in the industry. In this 30 minute in depth interview we discuss what makes Shari tik, tok and rock.
Episode 123 Interview Jeff Soelberg: Losing a Hand – Giving a Hand Welcome to the Love Your Story podcast where I get to interview people with STORIES! Getting down to the nitty-gritty of real life. What we really experience, what we struggle with, how we overcome, and the journey of the hero along that path – falling down and getting up. Today I bring Jeff Soelberg to the table. He’s just your average middle age guy whose life changed for the better on July 6, 2016, when he lost 3 of his fingers in a work accident and severely damaged his wrist. Over 8 months and 6 surgeries, hundreds of stitches and 1000s of hours of PT, he returned to work a different man. Jeff, instead of staying in the dark space created by the loss of the use of his hand decided to look for the news doors this could open for him. He now has a mechanical addition to his hand and he’s embraced the CrossFit competitions where he’s excelled and met inspiring individuals. Stay tuned to hear about his story. The night of Jeff’s accident his surgeon told him that he wouldn’t be able to lift weights again. He didn’t accept that and today he takes pride in proving his surgeon wrong. He’s a 55 year old who is competing against 20 and 30-year-olds in adaptive CrossFit competitions. He’s a big proponent of sharing the idea that we can overcome any challenge, climb any mountain we set our minds to and that we can do it no matter our age or ability. Tune into the audio program for my interview with Jeff. Since the interview Jeff has continued to create new and exciting things: In September he set the Indoor Rowing World Record for the 1/2 marathon 21097 meters in the Physically Disabled over 50 division. 1 hour 34 min 28 sec. He participated in the first ever Para Spartan Elite Race in Laughlin, Nevada. He has been peaking to groups about overcoming challenges. He started to do testing with his prosthetic manufacturer. Test the limits and abilities of my hands. To follow his new foundation that is in the works: Website: givingahand.org (http://www.jeffgivingahand.org/) Michelle Obama said, “You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it’s important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.” I believe Jeff exemplifies this. He’s a great example of taking a challenging situation and finding the silver-lining; making the best of it; taking it a step further to try and encourage others. Your challenge for this week is to think about what your largest challenge is right now at this moment in time. Can you find 5 things to be grateful for regarding this challenge? What are you learning from it? What people has it brought into your life? What opportunities has it created? Give it a little thought and you’ll find that there is always a silver lining and finding it not only broadens your perspective, it’s also the key that starts to change the energy and anxiety that surrounds the challenge. Have a great week out there creating your best life stories. Share this episode with someone you feel it might inspire and we’ll see you next week on the Love Your Story podcast.
Let's welcome to the show Mr. Steve Soelberg. Mr. Soelberg started performing stand-up comedy in 2007 as a New Year’s resolution. Since then he has performed on both coasts and a few places in between for crowds as large as 2,500 and as quaint as 7. Shy and quiet at parties Steve does comedy because he needs attention. He's also known for his likeness to actor Kevin Bacon. His comedy is intelligent, subtly sarcastic, and asinine with each show gaining fans and emails from good people, and fist bumps from people who do that kind of thing. As a Seattle native he recycles, never uses an umbrella, and loves dogs. You can find more from him here.

Shelle Soelberg created "Let's Play Music" because she was taught that the best way for children to learn is through play. The program is amazing at creating young musicians, and on this episode, Shelle walks us through why it works and how we can use some of the same techniques in our homes and families. Solfege and chord theory as the two powerful tools. Theory doesn’t have to be dry! You can learn in a practical, useful, meaningful way Chord theory and solfege can reveal how music works when you listen to it, and connect what you hear with what you play - whether that’s Beatles or Mozart! Whether you’re young, an adult who’s new to music, or someone who’s been learning music but struggled with theory (or not even known why to bother), focusing on these fundamentals can equip you to feel true freedom and creativity in your musicality. Although solfege might be associated with children and is very useful for them, it’s equally powerful and possible for adults to learn - as Shelle herself is an example of! In fact, many of the core foundation skills taught to 4-8 year olds at Let’s Play Music are a great way for adult musicians to connect with their inner musical instinct and start to gain freedom and confidence in music-making. So the methodology of Let’s Play Music isn’t just a great option for young children to get off to a strong and versatile start in music - it’s a perfect example of how even adults can learn music in a fun, creative and empowering way, by focusing on the inner skills that let you go beyond just being an “instrument player” and in fact become a “musician”. I had the opportunity to meet live at Publik Coffee Roasters with comedian, Steve Soelberg . Steve is a comedian centered on making his audience laugh. He prepares his material without the worry of being politically correct and believes that comedy is the last form of “free speech”. Being alone on stage with the goal of making hundreds of people laugh and connect with you requires personal power and Steve gets this power with a deep-rooted believe in himself. If you do not believe in yourself, then nobody will. Steve has performed all over America and knows that he needs to believe he is the best before he can think anyone else will think he is the best comedian. In this episode you will learn: The type of hot beverage Steve and I are sipping – Coffee from the small country of Burundi for Ben & tea for Steve Steve’s background and how he got into comedy The power of believing in yourself Comedy – The last true form of free speech Comedy is not for the thin skinned or politically correct Indie – Comedy.
