In 1992, Rachel Nickell was out for a walk with her dog and 2 year old son on Wimbledon Common in London, when a man came out of the blue and stabbed her to death. She was found with her son by her side, holding her hand. What followed was a shambles of an investigation by the Met Police, in which they decided to focus all their efforts on one (innocent) man, as the true perpetrator went on to kill others.

In this episode of the Data Malarkey podcast, data storyteller Sam Knowles meets Professor Angela Gallop, CBE, the forensic scientists' forensic scientist. Over the past four decades, the teams she's led have solved some of the most complex, difficult, and intransigent cold cases in British criminal history: Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common, Roberto Calvi under Blackfriars Bridge, and Damilola Taylor in Peckham. And perhaps most notoriously of all, Stephen Lawrence, stabbed by a gang of racist thugs on the streets of Eltham. The details of how Angela and her teams cracked these cases – often bringing pioneering new techniques into play – are recorded in (ahem!) forensic detail in all manner of media. They're in Angela's 2019 book When the Dogs Don't Bark, her 2022 book How to Solve a Crime, and in any number of TV documentaries and specials. Most recently, this included the three-part ITV1 series, Cold Case Forensics, in February of this year. Not to mention Angela's appearance on the legend that is BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs last November. Links below. Our conversation was recorded remotely, via the medium of Riverside.fm, on Friday 15 September 2023. Thanks to Joe Hickey for production support. Podcast artwork by Shatter Media. Voice over by Samantha Boffin. Angela tells us how her interest in solving crime was perhaps first kindled by the lurid stories in the now-defunct British tabloid Sunday newspaper, The News of the World, and her love of science was enflamed by an inspirational, sixth-form biology teacher at school “just in the nick of time”. This passion for working things out combined with an intense sense of natural justice saw forensic science take over her life after she joined the Home Office Forensic Science Service in 1974. As her skills developed and as she founded and scaled some of the country's first and most successful private forensic science businesses, Angela became an international expert in blood and other bodily fluids – who they could and couldn't have come from, and the patterns they make and leave behind at crime scenes. Forensics cover so many different areas in “offences against the person” – bodily fluids, of course, but also weapons, clothing – textiles, fibres, and fragments – toxicology, drugs, footwear, documents, and firearms. Increasingly, criminals leave digital traces of their activity, but the biggest single development in Angela's long and stellar career has been the rise to prominence of DNA evidence. In perhaps the most memorable, moving, and intricate part of our discussion, Angela details how – after repeated examination and failures to identify the killers – she and her team unpicked the evidence that led to prosecution in the Stephen Lawrence case. Angela also maintains that real forensics is much more subtle, time-consuming, interesting, and collegiate than the CSI TV drama series are ever able to portray. Imagine the profound impact, the scar forever etched on the soul, when that which is most precious is ripped away, permanently erased from existence. This is the harrowing reality that confronted a toddler named Alexander "Alex" Hanscombe, three decades ago.

Rachel Nickell's brutalised body was found on Wimbledon Common with her two-year-old son Alex wiping her bloodied face and begging her to 'wake up'. The nature of the broad daylight attack and the horrific injuries put enormous pressure on the Met to get the case solved and fast. However, none of that justifies the shoddy police work, cut corners, and tunnel vision that allowed a serial rapist to go unchecked for years. On the 15th of July 1992, a young mother, Rachel Nickell, was murdered on Wimbledon Common as her two-year-old son looked on. Her death would lead to one of the most notorious miscarriages of justice in British criminal history. The Murder That Changed Britain is a CBS Original, showing exclusively on CBS Justice (DStv 170 - available on Catch-up).
Professor Angela Gallop is a forensic scientist who has helped solve some of the most notorious violent crimes in recent British history including the killings of Stephen Lawrence, Damilola Taylor and Rachel Nickell. After completing a degree in botany and a doctorate on the biochemistry of sea slugs, Angela joined the Home Office's Forensic Science Service in 1974, and four years later attended her first crime scene, where 18-year-old Helen Rytka was killed by Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper. Over the years cold cases became her speciality and in 1992 she investigated the death of the Italian banker Roberto Calvi. He was found hanging from scaffolding under Blackfriars Bridge, London, in a suspected suicide ten years before. Angela's work established that suicide was unlikely and that, in all probability, he'd been murdered. His killers were never found. In 1999 Angela and her team investigated the murder of Lynette White who was killed in her flat in Cardiff in 1988. Five men had been tried for her death and three - known as the ‘the Cardiff Three' - were sent to prison although their convictions were quashed by the Court of Appeal two years later. Angela's investigation made history when the murderer was identified and convicted through his familial DNA. Angela first worked on the Stephen Lawrence case in 1995 – two years after his murder - and returned to it in 2006. The forensic evidence that was found during this investigation helped to convict his killers in 2012. Angela has written a book about her career in forensics and another which outlines the challenges the discipline faces today. Presenter Lauren Laverne Producer Paula McGinley

Lynda and Cass are joined by Pippa Gregory – Behavioural Investigative Advisor – and one of only three criminal profilers working in the UK today. She discusses the infamous cases of Yvonne Killian and Rachel Nickell - two investigations where criminal profiling was testing and found wanting. The fallout from these two cases led to the practice of criminal profiling being questioned and mistrusted by the police and public for some years. While Pippa Gregory was not directly involved in either case, the impact of them is still felt by Behavioural Investigative Advisors today. Pippa has been involved in supporting major crime investigations for over twenty-five years. In 1999, she was asked to take on the position of Principal Analyst for Surrey Police and in 2001 joined the Serious Crime Analysis Section (SCAS) as Principal Analyst. Pippa returned to a full-time BIA role in February 2009, providing specialist behavioural advice to major crime investigations and has supported over 300 major crime investigations in this capacity. She has been an NPCC Approved Behavioural Investigative Adviser since 1998. She is also a visiting lecturer at a number of universities in the UK. This week Keegan, Cassi and Christina chat about LulaRich, the Amazon Prime documentary about LulaRoe, and the issues they have with the bossbabe culture. This leads to talking about the pressure women face to find their "happy ending", meaning marriage and kids and the hope that we can redefine that. Heading into the FMK for the week, the girls do a listener suggestion of the popular dating apps: Tinder, Bumble and Hinge. There are pros and cons for them all! Going into the bad date stories, Christina tells the story of a trippy date with a rug, Cassi shares a story of an inebriated date that tries to overstay their welcome, and Keegan shares an enraging story of a fancy date that withholds good cheese. Christina wraps it up in our true crime segment, Tainted Love, with the story of Rachel Nickell. Rachell Nickell was a beautiful woman walking through Wimbledon Commons July 15, 1992 with her 2 1/2 year old son, Alex when she was suddenly attacked in broad daylight, leaving her son sitting by her with a piece of paper trying to "stop the blood".No one saw who did this to Rachel. There was a man named Colin Stag who police thought was behaving suspiciously but other than that, there were no other leads.
