At a time when we're debating where policing is going, we're going to tell you where the police came from. Guided by Peabody award-winning host Chenjerai Kumanyika, Empire City will provide the first accessible narrative history of the American police and its place in popular culture. Who are the police? And why were police departments created in the first place? To find answers, we're going to tell the origin story of the largest police force in the world: The NYPD. We begin in the late 1800's at a moment when the entire police force was on trial. It's the biggest corruption scandal in the history of the NYPD, and it all plays out like a high stakes courtroom drama. What follows is the action-packed account of how the NYPD got to this point and what happened next. It involves Black abolitionists fighting slave patrols in the courts of Gotham; two rival police forces duking it out for power at City Hall; the origins of the true crime genre; and how the NYPD spread their tactics worldwide.Listen to Empire City wherever you get your podcasts: Wondery.fm/Empire_City.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In the winter of 2002, police discovered more than 300 bodies on one property in the tiny town of Noble, Georgia. What followed was one of the biggest and most expensive investigations in the history of the American South. To get to the bottom of this forgotten case, journalist Shaun Raviv visits a rural community with plenty of secrets. He discovers the epic history of the well-respected family who owned the property, uncovers the fates of the bodies sent to a crematory called Tri-State, and searches for the mysterious man at the center of it all. And in the process, Shaun explores one of the most primal and vexing questions we face as human beings: What do the living owe the dead?Listen, rate and subscribe where ever you get your podcasts!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The date was October 31st, 2008 - Halloween night. A young Seattle woman, 24-year-old Arpana Jinaga had plans that evening to participate in a Halloween party at her apartment complex. Several of her neighbours and Arpana would decorate their apartments and open their doors to guests who would pop in and out over the course of the evening. She was spotted in the early morning hours, around 3 a.m., returning to her own unit to get some sleep after a night of socializing - and this would be the last time she would be seen alive. A few days later, a neighbour would discover Arpana's apartment in shambles, with the front door kicked in. Inside the unit, was the body of the young computer programmer, doused in motor oil and scrubbed clean with bleach - and now, every guest in attendance of the Halloween party was a suspect. Two individuals in particular would stand out to police, because of their past criminal history, relationship with the victim and DNA evidence found at the crime scene. However, despite a lengthy trial spanning almost a decade, the murder of Arpana Jinaga remains unsolved to this day. We're going to talk about the night of the murder, the vast amount of evidence found at the crime scene, and how we got to this point, where a killer has so far walked free. This week we peel back the layers of a truly haunting case, a crime that pushes us to confront potentially terrifying realities and uncomfortable truths. The chilling details of the attack; from the victim's brutal head trauma and shattered teeth, to a violation that's beyond unsettling. We scrutinize the potential suspects in Arpana's murder: The men who sadly discovered her brutalized and lifeless body. The suspicious activities of those present on that fateful night and the evidence left at the crime scene all come under our microscope. We question the direction of the initial investigation and why certain individuals were targeted while others remained seemingly unacknowledged in many public records. We attempt to unravel the complexities of both the alleged crimes and the trials of Emanuel Fair, a series of situations that seemingly spiral, always to the same ending, landing him behind bars. The potential missteps by detectives and prosecutors that led to a shocking lawsuit against the county and city of Redmond amongst others, shed light on the disturbing power dynamics and racism shadowing our justice system, ultimately, some might argue short changing more than one person of color as a victim of circumstance. As we draw to a close, we reflect on Emanuel Fair's life post-release, the formidable challenges he's battled, and the profound implications of a guilty verdict predicated on minute evidence, as well as his final thoughts regarding justice in a case that remains unsolved. Every man deserves a fair trial and Arpana Jinaga deserves justice, her family, answers. More than one thing can be true and yet somehow all these later we find ourselves with neither. This week we shared Ghost Wax, a Far and Tall Tales production. Death does not silence a victim's story and the grave is no place for the guilty to hide.--------- EPISODE KEYWORDS ---------Pacific Northwest, PNW, True Crime, Arpana Jinaga, Emanuel Fair, Murder, Suspects, Neighbor, Family Friend, Jealousy, Racism, Power Dynamics, Probation Violation, Bellevue, Washington state, Redmond, Redmond Police Department, Evidence, Sample Size, Guilt, Verdict, Life Post-Release, Challenges, Tarot, Halloween, Cold CaseVisit our website! Halloween isn't all about candy and pumpkins. Unfortunately, 17% more crime is committed on Halloween. And violent crime is 50% higher on Halloween than any other day of the year. Halloween can also bring out the sinister nature of people, resulting in senseless and brutal murders. Which brings us to today's case. This one has a lot going on: a Halloween party, a wrongful conviction, and an unsolved murder. Let's head to Redmond, Washington back in 2008. Foretold is a deeply engrossing podcast that follows the life of Paulina Stevens, a Romani fortune teller as she makes the extraordinary decision to leave her community. In this preview feature we begin with a frantic meeting in a cafe where a panicked Paulina blurts out she has escaped her family's psychic shop with her children, that she is a scam artist born and bred, that she was in an arranged marriage and taken out of school in the 6th grade to prepare for a life pre-determined for her. And so begins the journey to unpack each of those claims, learning about the context and culture of Romani people (commonly known as the pejorative 'Gypsy') along the way. This podcast explores cultural identity, evolution of culture, women's roles, modernization and tradition, and group dynamics --all wrapped up in a compelling and universally relatable life story of a unique woman who is curious about the world and yet metaphysically and culturally connected to her people's history. But three days later, her body was found in her apartment, and the scene was not only gruesome, but incredibly confusing. For nearly three and a half decades, the disappearance of 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews was a mystery – a riddle neither authorities nor her family members could solve. The residents of her cloistered Colorado hometown had scoured every inch of prairie. The President of the United States appealed to journalists to help. Jonelle's smiling face was printed on milk cartons nationwide. Still, every lead had fizzled. Every person of interest had turned out to be a dead end. Then, in 2019, Jonelle's remains were unearthed near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With the discovery came troubling new questions: a man obsessed with the case also be her abductor and murderer? Had the truth been hiding in plain sight the entire time? From Campside Media and Wondery comes season two of SUSPECT. Former CNN reporter Ashley Fantz and executive producers Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson (Suspect, Over My Dead Body) dig into one of the most mind-bending cold cases in modern history, in an attempt to separate fact and fiction, compulsion from guilt, and true-crime fandom from a motive for murder. On May 4, 2001, Bonny Lee Bakley was found fatally shot in a car on a dark North Hollywood street. The prime suspect was her husband, famed actor Robert Blake. But Bonny, a longtime con artist, had plenty of enemies. She left behind a trail of men she'd scammed, and she had a volatile relationship with Christian Brando, the troubled son of movie star Marlon Brando. Not since the O.J. Simpson case had the eyes of the nation been so fixated on a homicide. The search for Bonny's killer took detectives on an eleven-month odyssey across the country and through Hollywood's underbelly of hustlers, drug addicts, and would-be hitmen. It would be the most expensive murder investigation in LAPD history to date. This is the story of Robert and Bonny's toxic relationship, her shocking murder, and his chaotic trial. Did actor Robert Blake kill his wife? Or was the murder someone else's vendetta? From Wondery, and the team behind the hit series Hollywood & Crime (The Dating Game Killer, The Wonderland Murders, Death of Starlet) comes a six-part series about love, obsession and fame gone wrong. This week we take a look at the unsolved murder of 24 year old Arpana Jinaga. If ever the French saying “joie de vie” aptly described a person, it would have been Arpana. She was a vibrant, giving and intelligent woman. Anyone who she came in contact with quickly recognized her joy for life. Originally from India, she made her way halfway around the world in search of a new adventure and would eventually settle in the small area of Redmond, Washington in 2008 to begin a new career. After just 6 months in the evergreen state, what should have been a great start to her new life would end with her brutal murder. This is a case that has been unsolved for over a decade and is quite frustrating because there were some good suspects and even evidence to link them to the crime. There has been an arrest of a potential suspect and even 2 trials. But in the end, there have been no convictions in this case. One editorial note: in this interview there is discussion of another suspect in the case. We have chosen not to name that suspect, as he has never been charged with the crime.
24-year-old Arpana Jinaga had come to the United States from India to pursue her dreams. She had a great job as a software engineer and was going to school to get her graduate degree. She was driven and volunteered her time at numerous organizations. On Halloween night in 2008, Arpana's apartment complex had a party where residents went from unit to unit celebrating throughout the night. Sometime early the next morning, Arpana was brutally murdered and sexually assaulted in her apartment. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the circumstances surrounding Arpana Jinaga's death. The crime scene was bizarre. Her killer or killers had attempted to wipe away traces of DNA with different types of chemicals. But, they were unsuccessful and it was DNA that led police to two men who they believed played a role in Arpana's death. Listen to find out why, with so much DNA evidence, Arpana's murder remains unsolved.
