The date was October 31st, 2008 - Halloween night. A young Seattle woman, 24-year-old Arpana Jinaga had plans that evening to participate in a Halloween party at her apartment complex. Several of her neighbours and Arpana would decorate their apartments and open their doors to guests who would pop in and out over the course of the evening. She was spotted in the early morning hours, around 3 a.m., returning to her own unit to get some sleep after a night of socializing - and this would be the last time she would be seen alive. A few days later, a neighbour would discover Arpana's apartment in shambles, with the front door kicked in. Inside the unit, was the body of the young computer programmer, doused in motor oil and scrubbed clean with bleach - and now, every guest in attendance of the Halloween party was a suspect. Two individuals in particular would stand out to police, because of their past criminal history, relationship with the victim and DNA evidence found at the crime scene. However, despite a lengthy trial spanning almost a decade, the murder of Arpana Jinaga remains unsolved to this day. We're going to talk about the night of the murder, the vast amount of evidence found at the crime scene, and how we got to this point, where a killer has so far walked free. This week we peel back the layers of a truly haunting case, a crime that pushes us to confront potentially terrifying realities and uncomfortable truths. The chilling details of the attack; from the victim's brutal head trauma and shattered teeth, to a violation that's beyond unsettling. We scrutinize the potential suspects in Arpana's murder: The men who sadly discovered her brutalized and lifeless body. The suspicious activities of those present on that fateful night and the evidence left at the crime scene all come under our microscope. We question the direction of the initial investigation and why certain individuals were targeted while others remained seemingly unacknowledged in many public records. We attempt to unravel the complexities of both the alleged crimes and the trials of Emanuel Fair, a series of situations that seemingly spiral, always to the same ending, landing him behind bars. The potential missteps by detectives and prosecutors that led to a shocking lawsuit against the county and city of Redmond amongst others, shed light on the disturbing power dynamics and racism shadowing our justice system, ultimately, some might argue short changing more than one person of color as a victim of circumstance. As we draw to a close, we reflect on Emanuel Fair's life post-release, the formidable challenges he's battled, and the profound implications of a guilty verdict predicated on minute evidence, as well as his final thoughts regarding justice in a case that remains unsolved. Every man deserves a fair trial and Arpana Jinaga deserves justice, her family, answers. More than one thing can be true and yet somehow all these later we find ourselves with neither. This week we shared Ghost Wax, a Far and Tall Tales production. Death does not silence a victim's story and the grave is no place for the guilty to hide.--------- EPISODE KEYWORDS ---------Pacific Northwest, PNW, True Crime, Arpana Jinaga, Emanuel Fair, Murder, Suspects, Neighbor, Family Friend, Jealousy, Racism, Power Dynamics, Probation Violation, Bellevue, Washington state, Redmond, Redmond Police Department, Evidence, Sample Size, Guilt, Verdict, Life Post-Release, Challenges, Tarot, Halloween, Cold CaseVisit our website! Halloween isn't all about candy and pumpkins. Unfortunately, 17% more crime is committed on Halloween. And violent crime is 50% higher on Halloween than any other day of the year. Halloween can also bring out the sinister nature of people, resulting in senseless and brutal murders. Which brings us to today's case. This one has a lot going on: a Halloween party, a wrongful conviction, and an unsolved murder. Let's head to Redmond, Washington back in 2008. This is the case of Arpana Jinaga.___________________________Connect with UsWoman Found Dead After Hosting Halloween Costume Party At Her ApartmentMan Accused Of Killing Arpana Jinaga Freed After He's Held 9 Years With No ConvictionConvicted sex offender charged in brutal 2008 Redmond homicideSecond trial in killing of Redmond woman ends with not-guilty verdictConvicted sex offender charged in brutal 2008 Redmond homicideMan jailed for 9 years sues King County, Redmond after acquittal in killing: ‘I lost a lot'Eight Years in Jail With No Conviction: Emanuel Fair Files Lawsuit – Rolling StoneArpana Jinaga — UnresolvedInterview: Emanuel Fair, Found Not Guilty of Murder after Nine Years in Jail (with Amanda Knox) - Crime StoryAfter A Wrongful Conviction, One Black Man Is Suing Everyone Involved In His 8 Year Incarceration
A big Halloween party at an apartment complex in Redmond, Washington. Themed rooms and costumed partygoers. But by the end of the party, one of the hosts is dead. The police look to the partiers as the prime suspects: was it the guy in the devil mask, the bank robber, the construction worker? As investigators comb through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even consult with a psychic, they zero in on one suspect in particular. But for what reason? Host and reporter Matthew Shaer (Over My Dead Body) returns to the scene of the crime, speaks with everyone about a night that still haunts them years later. It's a series about race and policing, mislaid justice, cutting-edge science, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day -- choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse.wondery.fm/Suspect_SawTheDevil

Arpana Rayamajhi is a Nepalese artist, jeweler + actor currently creating in New York.I was lucky enough to sit down with Arpana during a pivotal moment in not only her career, but her life. Arpana vulnerably shares the many lessons and hardships of this past year and how she's working through it all. We chat about her upbringing, what it was like to be raised by artists while also growing up in a country where the arts are valued culturally but not seen as a viable means of income. We explore what happens to creativity when it collides with grief. And Arpana expresses how getting to know herself better allowed her to know the world better. This is an incredibly special conversation and is perfect for anyone who's going through one of life's many transitions.
This week we take a look at the unsolved murder of 24 year old Arpana Jinaga. If ever the French saying “joie de vie” aptly described a person, it would have been Arpana. She was a vibrant, giving and intelligent woman. Anyone who she came in contact with quickly recognized her joy for life. Originally from India, she made her way halfway around the world in search of a new adventure and would eventually settle in the small area of Redmond, Washington in 2008 to begin a new career. After just 6 months in the evergreen state, what should have been a great start to her new life would end with her brutal murder. This is a case that has been unsolved for over a decade and is quite frustrating because there were some good suspects and even evidence to link them to the crime. There has been an arrest of a potential suspect and even 2 trials. But in the end, there have been no convictions in this case. Join us as we discuss the issues investigators and the prosecution came up against when trying to find justice for this young woman, whose life was cut way too short.First news of Arapan’s deathhttps://bit.ly/3vQFiGmAn arrest is made 2 years after the crimehttps://bit.ly/3h7rt1QPacific Northwest Riders Motorcycle chat thread:https://bit.ly/3urBNWxSuperior Court’s response to Emanuel Fair’s appeal in before first trialhttps://bit.ly/3xVKnPeCourt of Appeals Review of juror instructionhttps://bit.ly/3epbevuIf you would like to listen to a great podcast who also covered the unsolved murder of Arpana Jinaga, check out Unresolved. https://bit.ly/3h72Hz5

Today our guest is Swami Prem Arpana. Arpana took sannyas in 1979 and is an artist and writer. Before taking sannyas Arpana was involved in local politics and was invited to be a candidate for the British Labour Party as a councillor, the first step in becoming an MP. After meeting Osho Arpana moved from a wildly extrovert life towards a hermit like existence. This is a very personal and intimate sharing from a sincere and authentic man. In this heart-to-heart conversation, Arpana talks about how taking sannyas and coming into contact with sannysins opened a new dimension in his life. Arpana’s first Dynamic Meditation gave him an experience of bliss and meeting Osho in person was pure silence. Through Osho, sannyas and meditation Arpana learnt some valuable lessons in real life: how to connect with elevating people, how to see beauty and light in every situation, and how to set clear boundaries. Osho is a living presence in Arpana’s life and he continues to get inspiration and guidance from Osho by meditating and reading his books. Arpana enjoys painting and writing. He has kept a daily journal for 35 years through which he learnt how to put things into perspective. Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode:01.15 - How Arpana came across Osho03.00 - From meeting sannyasins in a nearby centre to meeting Osho in Poona04.40 - Osho is a living presence in Arpana’s life08.30 - Arpana sees Osho for the first time10.15 - Osho’s guidance for Arpana15.10 - Reflections on 35 years of journaling19.45 - Living life with lightness, humour and non-seriousness24.00 - Arpana message to new generations about his experience with Osho26.15 - Being with Osho is not a matter of physical presence29.15 - Final thoughts about being a sannyasin31.30 - Arpana’s morning routine32.45 - Arpana’s favourite meditation34.15 - Arpana and Osho todayResources:Love Osho Youtube channelLove Osho Free Guide - How to meditate if you can't sit quietlyConnect with us on Facebook and InstagramMusic and Voice by Chinmaya Dunster*** REVIEW! ***If you’ve enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review on Apple Podcasts. A few weeks before COVID-19 swept across the world, we had a chance to sit down with Dr. Arpana Vidyarthi, to capture her career story. She specializes in hospital medicine and now is on the frontline of the pandemic, making this episode especially timely. The focus of the interview was on how she built a career that pulls together her passions and interests in internal medicine, quality and safety, teaching, and leadership. Because the interview was done just before the pandemic began, she wasn't asked any questions about the crisis. She recently gave us an update and we share this at the end of the interview.careercurves.com
