Growing up, Kiese Laymon thought of himself as a city kid. But he spent his childhood with a foot in two worlds: his mom's house in the capital city of Jackson, Mississippi and his grandma's house in a rural country town.It wasn't until Kiese left Mississippi that he came to understand that this question of city versus country actually meant a lot more. It carries a lot of baggage: the tensions between north and south, tectonic historical forces, and the contradictions of life in Mississippi. In this episode, our producer Justine Paradis sits down with writer Kiese Laymon for a conversation on this question of country versus city, what that has to do with the history of Black life in this country, and the story of Kiese's first children's picture book, his latest in a lifelong exploration of a complicated love of Mississippi.Featuring Kiese Laymon.Produced by Justine Paradis. In this new episode of “bauhaus faces” we talk about Hannes Meyer, the second Bauhaus director. PART 1 concentrates on Hannes Meyer's formative years and his involvement in cooperativism and collectivism, his first steps as architect and artist, and then on to his pivotal role at the Bauhaus in Dessau. What was new when he became second director of the Bauhaus? And why did he have to leave the Bauhaus all at once after two successful years? The US-American art-historian Dara Kiese, who wrote her PhD thesis about Hannes Meyer's holistic education at the Bauhaus, and former Senator for Culture in Berlin and art-historian Thomas Flierl help tell the story of Hannes Meyer in this 1st part. The Meyer era of the Bauhaus ended in summer of 1930 when he is dismissed by the Dessau magistrate in absence from the school. The political tensions between the far left and the far right now became palpable. A communist cell had emerged at the Bauhaus, for which Meyer was blamed responsible. His peak in Germany was now beginning to decline and Meyer decided that it was time to try and establish himself in the Soviet Union – in a country from which he expected freedom of thought and a fulfilment of his architectural visions. Little did he know … PART 2 will launch at the beginning of June featuring Russian art-historian and artist Tatiana Efrussi and Mexican art-historian Raquel Franklin, who both wrote their PhD theses about Hannes Meyer's work in the Soviet Union (1930–36) and Mexico (1938–49) respectively. So, don't forget to listen to that part, too! Let's now dive into a the first part of this new episode of “bauhaus faces” and shine a light on Hannes Meyer.

On the latest episode of Reckon True Stories, Deesha Philyaw and Kiese Laymon are joined by MacArthur Genius and National Book Award Winner Dr. Imani Perry to discuss genre, personal stories and the ethical commitment to those we write about, the utilization of craft to bring the reader close to the experience and the body, the body as political, Black women and silence, mobility, music, and mothering. They ask the question of what we owe of ourselves as writers — and particularly Black writers— to our audience, and they explore what it looks like to maintain boundaries, to self-preserve, and to rest. In Kiese's words, he calls it learning “the art of not just no, but not now.” Kiese praises Dr. Perry on how she has never written the same kind of book twice, and in this episode, she talks about her inspirations, how she chooses what to write towards, and what questions she is consistently leaning into in her work. Deesha Philyaw and Kiese Laymon discuss the complicated process of writing about family — specifically parents. They talk about the ways parents fail, how they disappoint, but why it is important, and necessary when writing about family and those we love, to give them grace, and allow them the room to make mistakes. They ask the question, What do we owe to those we write about? And they call for writers to be guided, first and foremost, by love. Deesha and Kiese talk about their own relationships with their parents, the processing and tending to those relationships, and how they moved through feelings of shame and anger while working through layers of grief. In the premiere episode of Reckon True Stories, co-hosts and acclaimed authors Deesha Philyaw (The Secret Lives of Church Ladies) and Kiese Laymon (Heavy, How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America, Long Division) come together to kick off a season where nonfiction takes the spotlight. They talk about their own journeys to writing nonfiction, the distinctions they make between their essay writing and fiction writing, as well as how they came to collaborate and work together in the publishing industry. Deesha and Kiese discuss writing on their own terms, revising their own ideas of what an essay is “supposed” to do or look like, and putting themselves back into the writing, while also exploring what makes for a compelling essay — calling for the writer to not lose the storytelling aspect in their nonfiction work. Our text for today's episode is “John Thompson, b. 1941,” a short eulogy essay by the writer Kiese Laymon in which he reflects on the special affection that not just he but also his “aunts, mother and grandmother” felt for Thompson and his Georgetown basketball team when Laymon was growing up. The coach was more than just a winning coach; he was an avatar of Black America, and a symbol of Black excellence and paternal strength and solidity. Laymon writes:From a distance, I saw Thompson as representative, our imaginary coach who was once a decorated player, who backed up Bill Russell for the champion Boston Celtics. That decorated player who backed up Bill Russell was once a scared Black child, like every Black child I'd met in the universe, just longing to have a fair shot at gracefully winning and graciously losing.…Thompson's national championship and his subsequent loss in 1985 made real for me the representative possibilities and consequences of publicly winning and losing in America while Black. Though Thompson was our imaginary coach, in this eerie way we were his real team. If Thompson lost, and Georgetown lost, it felt as if my race lost. Even at 9 I knew there should have been more Black coaches in all the sports I watched since nearly all the best players were Black. I knew that there was nothing as joyful as publicly beating white Americans in anything simply because white Americans were allowed to play, cheat, coach, referee, own and win whether they actually showed up or not. My guests on the show today are Laymon himself, professor of English and creative writing at Rice University and author of, among other books, the essay collection How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America, the novel Long Division, and the memoir Heavy; and Jason Sokol, professor at history the university of New Hampshire and author of, among other books, There Goes My Everything: White Southerners in the Age of Civil Rights and The Heavens Might Crack The Death and Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Two personal notes about this episode: Jason is my oldest friend on the planet. We went to pre-school together and have been close friends since. And Jason and Kiese were friends at Oberlin College, where they played basketball together and talked ideas, history, race, and the rest. As you'll hear on the episode, they haven't spoken since they graduated, so this is a bit of a reunion. The audio clip at the beginning is from the song “Georgetown Press,” by Wale.Eminent Americans is a reader-supported publication. [For "Choose Your Own Adventure" Info, See Below...]Hey, Fellow Babies!! The Cincinnati trip was a huge success. We got back just a couple of hours before recording this episode. We had a great time, even if we are a little sore (we walked a LOT!). There's tons of info in this week's show about the trip!! A tip: check the show Facebook page. All you have to do is search "WKRP-Cast" in Facebook and you'll find us. We mention FB posts a LOT in today's show. If you haven't been following our Epic Adventure, you'll want to take a look at some of our posts. Much of the trip was pretty visual, and we did snap a LOT of pix.We also caught up with a couple of interesting guys who have had a LOT to do with WKRP over the years. The first was Bob Gerding. Bob is the local Video Pro who shot the opening and all of the exteriors whenever they needed something out in Studio City. Bob has some GREAT stories from working on the show. THEN we talked to the man who is the dean of Media Reporting in Cincinnati: John Kiesewetter or just "Kiese". Kiese wrote for the Cincinnati Enquirer starting just after WKRP went off network. He followed it through the syndication episodes with the lost music, hacked scenes and awful attempt at a DVD release in 2007. He's talked to every one of the show principles and written about them all multiple times over the years (except maybe Jan). Kiese took us on an incredible tour of Cincinnati looking at it through the lens of WKRP. We'll have full interviews with both of these guys plus a rundown of our four WKRP-Filled days in Cincinnati. Strap in, Fellow Babies...the Cincinnati tour is leaving as soon as you push "play." CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE:Are you ONLY wanting to hear interviews? Only looking for our Cincy Travelogue? Either way, we've got you covered! - Bob Gerding Interview (30 total mins) - Starts at 24 minutes. FF to listen.- John Kiesewetter Interview (39 total mins) - Starts at 1h:04 minutes.- You can hear us being interviewed by Chris & Janeen at 2:00hours. If you're only wanting travelogue, FF past the interviews the specified times.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-ekberg/message
To celebrate ther exhibition "A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration," this podcast explores conversations with Mississippians on both sides of the Great Migration: those that left and those that stayed. This weekly limited series dives deep into how the U.S. has evolved due to this historical phenomenon that saw more than six million African Americans leave the South. Food, music, and literature are just a few of the topics to be highlighted. Brought to you by the Mississippi Museum of Art, in partnership with the Mississippi Arts Commission and Mississippi Public Broadcasting. In this episode, hear from Mississippi authors Ralph Eubanks and Kiese Laymon. Born in Mount Olive, and a graduate of Ole Miss, Ralph's books explore our state's landscape and history. Kiese is a Jackson native whose writing focuses on race and family. In this incredibly open conversation, both authors share family stories, what keeps them connected to Mississippi, and what effect our special state has had on their writing. Committed to honesty, equity, and inclusion, the Mississippi Museum of Art is a leader in engaging art, artists, and participants in the critical work of reckoning with the past, connecting with each other in the present, and envisioning a future without division. Kiese Laymon, a southern writer born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, is one of the best writers in the country and someone I got to know during my time as Vassar College. Recently there have been towns across America banning books by some of the country's greatest writers. Books by Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Kiese, and others have been removed from libraries and banned from schools. I'm re-airing this episode because his voice is powerful, inspiring, critical, authentic and vital for free-thinking people everywhere. Kiese Laymon is the author of Heavy: An American Memoir, the novel Long Division and a collection of essays, How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America. Heavy, winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal, the LA Times Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose and Audible's Audiobook of the Year, was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the The Undefeated, New York Times, Publishers Weekly, NPR, Broadly, Library Journal , The Washington Post , Southern Living , Entertainment Weekly, San Francisco Chronicle and The New York Times Critics. Laymon is the recipient of the 2019 Austen Riggs Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media. Laymon has written essays, stories and reviews for numerous publications including Esquire, McSweeneys, New York Times, ESPN the Magazine, NPR, The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, Vanity Fair, The Best American Series, Ebony, Paris Review, Guernica and more. This week, we go deep! Leanne sits down with one of her favourite authors and former professor, Kiese Laymon to talk about one of his most recent publications, Heavy. Through the lens of his memoir, Kiese and Leanne share their thoughts on the continuous journey of restoration and healing, the intertwining of forgiveness, love and accountability, and the unrealistic standards that are imposed on us and we impose on ourselves. Get a copy of Heavy ASAP: https://www.amazon.com/Heavy-American-Memoir-Kiese-Laymon/dp/1501125656 Winner of the Carnegie Medal for Nonfiction, LA Times Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose, Barnes and Noble Discover Award, and Audible's Audiobook of the Year, HEAVY was also named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, NPR, Broadly, Library Journal , The Washington Post , Southern Living , Entertainment Weekly, San Francisco Chronicle and The New York Times Critics. Author Kiese Laymon recently got into a twitter dust up about the eternal question, Outkast v. The Beatles. He wrote, “Beatles stole southern Black and added it to British white. Outkast stole Mars and added it to southern urban Black. Outkast wins.” After reading more of what Kiese had to say about the appropriation of Black southern music, Adia knew she needed to bring him on the show. Their conversation unfolds over how Outkast created new space for southern hip hop, what Adia learned from watching the Derek Chauvin trial, and what hip hop itself can learn from the blues. On the weight of being Black in America... Kiese Laymon has spent his whole life in conflict over eating and not eating. Over the course of his life, his weight has spiked and dipped. In his book, Heavy: An American Memoir, Kiese weaves together all these experiences. In doing so, disordered eating, anti-blackness, fat-phobia, and addiction all bubble together. "As artists, we got to be able to talk about all of it at once because it always happens at once," he says. "Food to me is a paradoxical way to get into all of the mess of what we are." Karen and Wynter travel all the way to the University of Mississippi in Oxford for their first live show, with special guests Kiese Laymon and Alysia Steele. The four of them get into our inappropriate objects of pop-cultural affection--or the many times each of them has been told they were wannabes, or didn’t belong for being POC who like “problematic pop objects.” Befitting their idyllic campus setting, the panel gets into how School Daze vs. Dear White People (the TV series) each explore the minefield of desire and student culture at universities. Wynter praises Hustlers and tells us why J. Lo is the hardest working woman in show business. Karen gets into the “hard to watch,” but nevertheless must-watch Netflix series on a serial rape case, Unbelievable with Merrit Wever and Toni Collette. Plus, we have more Nuo-Lingo for you, while Kiese and Alysia bring you two slappin’ songs of the week. Kiese Laymon back to the program today. Kiese is a professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Mississippi. When last on the show we talked about his novel, Long Division, and his book of essays, How to Kill Yourself an Others in America. Today we'll be talking his latest, Heavy: An American Memoir, which was named to many major best books of the year lists for 2018, and he won the best Audiobook of the Year award from Audible.
Kiese Laymon’s Heavy: An American Memoir has been hailed as “a tapestry of heart and heartache” (Boston Globe), “raw, cathartic” (O Magazine), “staggering” (Elle.com), “stunningly honest” (The Atlantic) and “a refined, warm, generously poetic library work.” (Entertainment Weekly). Written as an elegy to his mother, with whom Kiese had a complicated and deep relationship, Kiese speaks about body shame, gambling, violence, blackness and so much more. It’s honest and real and deeply powerful. In this episode, we speak with author and professor Kiese Laymon when he was in San Francisco on his whirlwind book tour. When reading Heavy, you discover not only the power of words, memories, and love but also the consequences of generational trauma, leading to addiction and needing to hide-to disappear. Through this book and the exceptional work Kiese has done unpacking his trauma, he finds freedom, and, as readers, so do we. We love you, Kiese. Thank you.

Carlo Duraturo, Direktør for Norden i Universum, Stein Jacob Frisch, daglig leder i Geelmuyden.
