Sparse. Laconic. Expansive. Languid. Wry. The Coen Brother's 2007 Neo-Noir Western 'No Country For Old Men' moves to the fatefully ticking beat of it's own Grandfather Clock. It's a film that rewards close viewing and is astoundingly faithful to Cormac McCarthy's novel while also being so completely a "Coen Brothers film" even as it's their (only?) adaptation of an existing book. Featuring an iconic performance by Javier Bardem as the philosophical killer Anton Chigur, brilliant cinematography from frequent Coen collaborator Roger Deakins, and perfectly wrought twangily-Texas turns by Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones. A number of signature Coens scenes of the lead characters interacting with a variety of shop clerks, receptionists, store owners, and authority figures abound.

Gottlieb Daimler's patent for his high-speed petrol engine (dubbed the "Grandfather Clock") on 3rd April, 1885, wasn't just a technological breakthrough—it inadvertently birthed the motorbike. Teaming up with Wilhelm Maybach, the duo had crafted a compact engine featuring float-metered carburetors and mushroom intake valves, all powered by hot tube ignition. This engine found its way into their first vehicle prototype, the Petroleum Riding Car, which bore little resemblance to today's motorcycles but represented a pioneering step towards motorised transportation. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how it was not Daimler, but his son, Paul, who became the first-ever motorbiker; consider the steam-powered predecessors that could potentially lay claim to inventing the motorbike; and explain how Daimler took what he'd learned from these experiences to establish Mercedes… Further Reading: • ‘An Overview of the Motorcycle's History' (ThoughtCo, 2019): https://www.thoughtco.com/history-of-the-motorcycle-1992151 • ‘History Channel' (Motoring World, 2017): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Motoring_World/Pt0xDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Daimler+Reitwagen&pg=PA26&printsec=frontcover • ‘The riding car – a Daimler patent' (Mercedes-Benz TV, 2010): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0Tvuya6otc Love the show? SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Dan's first story to share this week revolves around a clock. While it might not sound so scary, it's actually terrifying. Could roughly 10,000 people have all seen the same UFOs at a football match? Lynze has some animal themed tales this week, which is kind of funny but not really. Her first story features a bunny, which is known to be a symbol of the underworld. What was this particular bunny up to? And then, her worst nightmare, frogs! What is going on with these frogs throwing themselves up against a window? Tune in and find out! New Merch: Brand new Spoopy design featuring an adorable wide eyed bat and large words SPOOPY. GamerDude is stepping back into the way-back machine this week and revisiting some more things that used to exist that have just faded away from our lives. He was inspired by memories of his grandmother's Grandfather Clock, and how he remembers those big clocks being a fixture in so many homes. He remembers tube TVs, and all the controls for vertical and horizontal holds, and for color and tint. He remember how waterbeds were a big fad for awhile, and how yo-yos were the fidget spinner of his youth.GamerDude also remembers a variety of toys, from the toys you'd get in the cereal box, to the hefty Tonka trucks he'd play with in the sandbox. He also remembers getting records that were actually part of the cereal box, and being able to play them on a standard record player.GamerDude also has some predictions for things that are likely to disappear in the next 10 years. He talks about how keys are becoming less necessary, as are actual "pen and paper" (wet) signatures. And, he talks about how "knowing our neighbors" also seems to be becoming a thing of the past.

Join Hackaday Editors Elliot Williams and Tom Nardi as they review some of their favorite hacks and projects of the past week. The episode starts with a discussion about the recently announced Artemis II crew, and how their mission compares to the Apollo program of the 1960s and 70s. From there, the pair theorize as to why Amazon's family of Echo devices have managed to evade eager hardware hackers, take a look at a very impressive SMD soldering jig created with some fascinating OpenSCAD code, marvel at the intersection of art and electronic design, and wonder aloud where all the cheap motorized satellite dishes are hiding. Stick around for some questionable PCB design ideas, a Raspberry Pi expansion that can read your mind, and the first flight of a (semi) hydrogen-powered aircraft. This week's Wind Tunnel takes you inside one of Honda's flagship teams, behind the scenes in a pursuit of one of racing's most unique trophies and analysis of a team's attempt to manipulate a race's outcome. When the Bank of America Roval 400 went to overtime, it set up n exciting finish that catapulted Christopher Bell into the Round of 8. It also set up a desperation laden final 2 laps for SHR's Chase Briscoe who needed to gain several spots to knock Kyle Larsen out of his transfer spot. As Briscoe carved through the field on new tires, his teammate, Cole Custer slowed on the backstretch which resulted in several of the spots Chase was pursuing to slow as well. A post race analysis of Custer's actions resulted in $200,000 in fines as well as hefty points penalty. In a rare departure for normal Wind Tunnel episodes, Jack breaks down the situation and offers his opinion on the optics as well as the actions.Meyer Shank Racing finished off their 2022 IMAS Campaign the same way that they started it….by Winning! They kicked off the year taking the Rolex 24 and capped a Championship campaign by taking the top honors at the Petit LeMans 2 weeks ago. MSR's Michael Shank drops in and we talk about the team's IMSA success as well as a review of their IndyCar efforts.Jack checks in with Peyton Sellers. Sellers and Layne Riggs took the Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series National Championship right down to the final races at Dominion Speedway and only after a post season audit did Sellers discover that he had lost the title that he left Dominion thinking that he had won.But Sellers found a silver lining to that cloud when he took the top honors after 15 years of trying at MARTINSVILLE Speedway's Valley Star 300 adding a Grandfather clock to his Trophy Case. Sellers takes this week's Advance Auto Parts Victory lap and we talk about the roller coaster ride of emotions those 7 days created. All that as well as a recap of the NASCAR Playoffs stop at Charlotte Motor Speedway's Roval on this week's Wind Tunnel.

71, 8-1, SHOW NOTES & COPYRIGHTS (Scheduled August 26, 2022) Today we will be reading and discussing poems that were influenced by a picture or object that inspired me. THE CLOCK, THE TIME, OUR HOURS (God Still Rhymes, pg 7) Time, is it ours or is it hours, The hands that do not move? As we move through time Do we make life rhymes? Whose face is on the clock? Does it reflect the number of years, the number of fears, the number of tears? The rhymes that age us As we look in the mirror, Is it ours or the face of time? Will the hands on the clock Give us time to unlock The secrets we keep, Our sins so deep? Do we have the hours, At least to start, To open our heart And release what was ours? Time will wait for no one. Will we be standing still At the end of time? Time will not go on into infinity As we wait for eternity. We are free, what ever we want to be for all to see especially he that is in Heaven above. Will we choose his love before the end? Will we accept the grace he did send? In the shining sun, do we have time to accept his son, his sacrifice to make us right? The hands on the clock sometimes move so odd. At times they do mock each and every minute of the day. But if we make time to pray we will see the hand of God, feel his infinite love his saving grace his sacrifice for our righteousness, that we will be for eternity. Discussion: The clock that inspired this poem also inspired a full chapter in God Still Rhymes: The Broken Clock, Still The Clock Is Still, Our Time Standing Still, and The Clock A Few Months Later. Grandfather Clock was written many years before. It seem like a good introduction to the other clock poems. WINDOWS TO GOD (God Still Rhymes, pg. 65) An ancient cathedral, an old country church, filled with worshipers praying, singing, hearing as his word is heard as sun shining through windows of stained glass. The history of our faith, of a journey through the ages, reflecting sorrows and joys ever present for us to see. As it may seem the lighted beam seen through the glass as time does pass the hands of man reflects his plan. Then at church today, walking through the door, no windows reflecting a journey that has passed, now in muted hues photographs black and white, joy without sorrow, husband, wife, a child, give hope for tomorrow. The journey unfinished, they are looking forward. We see the Son shine through many smiles. Now we can see what we can be, the simplicity for you and me, life he did save, the gift he gave. Whether by the sun shining through multicolored stained glass or the Son shining through a photograph of white and black, both are windows through which we can see the work of his hand. Reflection: The church I attend was having its 18th anniversary. The only windows are in the entrance atrium and the classrooms. To celebrate this occasion pictures of some of the members were taken and enlarged. These were put up on the walls around the church. They reminded me of the stained glass windows in the churches I had grown up in. Discussion: WHICHEVER WAY THE WIND WILL BLOW (Living In God's Rhyme, pg. 207) A storm, a boat, the disciples with Jesus . . . He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be Still!” Then the wind died down And it was completely calm. (Mark 4:39. NIV) When there is a gentle breeze Then we find a life of ease, But when the wind will blow Does our spirit sink low? It is at those times When facing life's storms, With the wind at our face As we run our life's race, We feel tattered and...

This week, we're talking about Thanksgiving -- to flout the law, or not to flout the law, that is the question? We also spend time talking about our Grandfather Clock that is a regular guest on our show and how, and why, it came to be. We are looking forward to saying "hello" to you by email: CatholicHitch@gmail.com. If you like our changed "small talk" bumper, please let us know? The intro and outro songs are used under a licensing agreement, and licensed for use on this podcast; they are both by one of our favorite bands: Estradasphere.
Jen and Kim just can't believe they've done 91 episodes on the ABV network and you're not sick of them yet? Imagine living to be the age of 91, just like some of our grandparents have. Speaking of grandparents... What do you think of the idea of a haunted Grandfather Clock? Although the clock doesn't need to be haunted to be creepy, the ladies uncover some crazy stories about death, clocks stopping, and clocks being haunted. So buckle up kids, this is a creepy, thought provoking episode. Kim sips on Stagg Jr Bourbon, the new kid in Nova Scotia.
When a man inherit a Grandfather Clock, he shouldn't have to expect death... should he? This is the story of a man that notice that the Grandfather Clock that he inherited doesn't keep actual time. At least in human terms. With so many deaths in his family, can these really be linked to the clock? Police Officer Val Queiroga, who was on scene for the massive explosion in North Haven back in 2018, was on this morning to talk about the donation the company he's working for towards gathering PPE for first responders in CT. (0:00) In Dumb Ass News, a Florida woman was arrested for putting Easter eggs filled with pornography in her neighbor's mailboxes. (6:02) Scot Haney, who has been broadcasting from home, was on the phone with Chaz and AJ this morning. Last week, his cat interrupted the segment, this week it was his grandfather clock. In episode 10 of the Bally Alley Astrocast, Adam and Chris++ review the modified version of the "AstroBASIC" game Gobblers. They also discuss just a few of the many updates to the BallyAlley.com website since March 2017. Finally, they talk about some of the recent occurrences in the Astrocade community. This is the first full-length episode in over 2 1/2 years; thanks to all those Astrocade fans who kept pestering Adam for another episode. This article, which appeared in "Computer Graphics and Art," 1980-1981 Yearbook 5, covers the Bally Arcade as a low-cost solution to create graphics using Bally BASIC and the ZGrass language. It specifically talks about several pieces of art that were written using the two languages. Some of the video art pictures are included in the article, as well as some source code for a few programs. Astrocademo - By Genesis Project. Demo for the Bally Astrocade (1978). Code by Shadow. Two programs are run that use clocks which can be used for timing real Bally Arcade hardware versus emulation. One program, Goldfish Demo, is written in machine language. The other program, Grandfather Clock, is written in BASIC. This video can be used to test how the emulation speed is for Astrocade emulation. Each program is run for three minutes. In addition, the Groups.io site is now the current place to talk about the Astrocade today. Palo Alto Tiny BASIC, Version 3 - By Li-Chen Wang. This article is excerpted from PCC's Reference Book of Personal And Home Computing, Edited by Dwight McCabe. 1977. Pages 58-88. Bally BASIC (and "AstroBASIC") are a superset of the original Palo Alto Tiny BASIC. This version of Li-Chen Wang's Palo Alto Tiny BASIC will run on either the 8080 or Z-80, and only uses 2K of core memory. It contains a number of nice features including command abbreviations and error messages. At the end of the listing is a cross reference table for symbols used in the program and also the object code for the program. For further information on Tiny BASIC languages, see Dr. Dobb's Journal, Volume 1. Gunfight: A Z80 Instruction by Instruction Breakdown- By Michael Matte - 198x. In the 1980s, Michael Matte, a passionate Astrocade user, used the Z80 source code listing for the 8K ROM, available in the "Nutting Manual," as a basis for his detailed breakdown of Gunfight. Michael created the breakdown "to provide beginner assembly or machine language programmers an inside look at the game Gunfight. The documentation will reveal how on-board subroutines in the System ROM can be used to execute particular tasks. The 'special routines' listing can be used as a reference source for programming demos or games." The archive includes Michael Matte's complete, 42-page breakdown of the Astrocade game Gunfight. This breakdown will be most useful if used with the source code for the Bally's 8K system ROM, which is available in the "Nutting Manual." Astrocade High-Resolution Upgrade - By Michael Matte (Circa 1985/1986/2019) - These five in-depth "packages" (documents) were created by Michael C. Matte in 1986. These documents explain how to upgrade a Bally Arcade/Astrocade from the "Consumer Mode," which uses the low-resolution display (160x102 pixels), to "Commercial Mode," which uses the high-resolution mode (320x204 pixels) used in arcade games such as Gorf and Wizard of Wor. There are pictures of Michael's hi-res unit and screenshots here too. Hi-Res Bally Arcade/Astrocade Correspondence and Hi-Res Project Updates - I have added correspondence from 1985 and 1986 between Michael Matte, Don Gladden (who edited volume 6 of the Arcadian) and Bob Fabris. Michael wrote the documentation on how to upgrade the Bally Arcade to hi-res mode. His letters primarily deal with this matter, but he also drops some wonderful tid-bits, such as that he made a BalCheck II for his hi-res unit. He also upgraded the Machine Language Manager cartridge so that it could take advantage of hi-res mode. SetScreen 2: An Upgraded Bally Arcade/Astrocade Troubleshooting Utility- By MCM Design/Michael Matte. October 2017. Setscreen 2 is a visual troubleshooting tool that can be used to help diagnose a failed Astrocade motherboard producing a blank TV screen at power-up. GitHub Astrocade Code Repository - Rachel Weil's (aka "hxlnt") GitHub annotated Z80 assembly source code, binaries, and dev tools for the Bally Astrocade. A Power Transformer Substitution for the Bally/Astrocade Computer System- By Michael Matte (MCM Design). April 2018. If your original Bally power supply fails, and you have experience in electronics, then these instructions explain how to build a substitute power transformer. "Treasures of Cathy" - By John Collins. 1982.This adventure-style game has 49 locations with 18 treasures. You can only carry six treasures/items at a time. Each treasure gives additional points. Each move subtracts one point. Try for a score greater than 1,000 points. There are four keywords: IN, UP, DROP and GET. On September 7, 2018, this game was played by Chris++ and Adam Trionfo. A rough, incomplete map of the game was created to help figure-out the game's layout. To answer Paul's 10-year-old question: to enter the house, climb one of the trees in the game (type UP), and then GET the key from the bird's nest. With the key, the player can enter the house by typing IN. Feedback The Astrocade Turns 40! - AtariAge Thread. - The first Bally Home Library Computer Arcade finally shipped and arrived in people's hands in late January 1978. Many of these people who got their units had ordered their system from a three-page JS&A ad that appeared in the September 1977 issue of Scientific American. Happy birthday, Astrocade! The Bally is now 40 years old and we're still fiddling around with it. Good for us! If anyone has any stories to tell about the Astrocade (especially if you got your system in 1978 or for your birthday!), then I'd love to hear your tales! Private Screenings: The GAMES Guide To Home Video Games- By Phil Wiswell - From December 1982 GAMES magazine - "Mezmaron" mentions this article in his feeback to the show. Page 38 of the magazine (page two of the article) has the Astrocade system on it. History Panel: "The Arcadians: Exploring the history of homebrew for the Bally Astrocade"- For any enthusiasts who are going to Magfest or live on the east coast, Rachel Simone Weil and [Kevin Bunch] will be running a history panel all about the independent developer/enthusiast scene that cropped around the Astrocade! There is also an AtariAge forum thread on this topic. Gobblers (Mod) by Bob Wiseman and Klaus Doerge The original version of Gobblers is from Arcadian 3, no. 12 (Oct. 05, 1981): 125. The modified version, with updates by Klaus Doerge, is from Arcadian 5, no. 4 (Feb. 18, 1983): 56, 70. "This is a two-player game played on a 10x5 field. The object of the game is to have your Gobbler gobble-up more squares than you opponent. When play begins, use the JX and JY to direct your Gobbler around the screen. Each printed square is worth 1, 2, 3, or 4 points, depending upon how many dots are there. The game ends when the last square is eaten." Gobblers - "AstroBASIC" 2000-Baud version. Gobblers - Bally BASIC 300-Baud Version.
Martin Truex Jr earned his first Grandfather Clock on Sunday afternoon after a dominating performance Sunday at Martinsville Speedway. We'll discuss what this win means for him in his run at a second championship and we'll look at the playoffs picture. Who burried themselves in a hole on Sunday? We'll discuss that. Plus, Matt Tifft missed Sunday's race with what was later determined to be a seziure. Tifft will be out of the car for the remainder of the 2019 season with John Hunter Nemechek making his first three starts in the Cup Series. We'll discuss what this means for John Hunter and for Front Row Motorsports' future. Also, the Gander Outdoor Truck Series had an interesting finish on Saturday afternoon that saw Todd Gilliland win his first truck race and steal headlines for his comments after crossing victory lane. We'll discuss what that means for Gilliland and his future. We'll also take phone calls and discuss the other news floating around the NASCAR World.

Today's Guest: Captain Kangaroo, a.k.a., Bob Keeshan, long-time CBS morning host for children's television (EDITOR'S NOTE -- Today, June 27, 2016, would have been the 89th birthday of the great CBS-TV children's TV host, Bob Keeshan, better known to the Baby Boomer generation as "Captain Kangaroo." Keeshan passed away in 2004, and I've spent years trying to recover the telephone interview I did with him as a St. Petersburg Times correspondent, published September 19, 1984. I'm pleased to say I finally found it and upgraded the audio quality. You can now read the interview as published or, for the first time ever, listen to our actual conversation. I hope you'll enjoy this classic edition of Mr. Media and share it with your friends and family. -- Bob Andelman) When it comes to children's television, Captain Kangaroo is a man who knows what he's talking about. And what the soft-spoken Captain is discussing these days is the scarcity of quality network programing provided for kids. Captain Kangaroo, a.k.a. Bob Keeshan, will address the subject at a free lecture at the University of South Florida's Cooper Hall auditorium, CPR 103 (College of Arts and Letters, Tampa campus), on Thursday at 8 p.m. He was last here in 1976, taping segments of the program at Busch Gardens. His appearance corresponds to the end of the Captain's nearly 30 years on CBS. The end has been in sight for some time. In January 1982, some CBS affiliates such as Tampa's WTVT-Ch. 13 dropped the weekday morning Captain Kangaroo Show (it was picked up briefly by WFTS Ch. 28). Later that year, CBS Morning News was lengthened and for the first time the Captain could only be seen on Saturday and Sunday mornings. For a short time even the name and format of his show was changed, to the fast-paced Wake Up. UNTIL December, the Captain Kangaroo Show continues on weekend mornings, al though it has been unavailable in Tampa Bay for some time. After the first of the year, the future of the Captain, Mr. Greenjeans, Mr. Moose and Grandfather Clock is uncertain. BOB KEESHAN podcast excerpt: "I feel very strongly that I'm able to take that role as advocate and let people know how strongly I feel that society needs to do a better job nurturing people.." "We are searching for a time period on public television, where we hope we will be on Monday to Friday and reach the audience that the program has been designed and produced for over the many years. I think there's a very strong chance," Keeshan said in a recent telephone interview from his New York office. The people involved in making decisions at CBS have displeased Keeshan but he says they are doing "what they have to do. If the FCC didn't tell them they were free to do what they wanted to do, they would make other decisions. But with that unshackling of responsibility, the stockholders have got to get their due, as much money as they possibly can. That's the bottom line. "I might have some strong feelings about the FCC and their doctrinaire feelings about letting the marketplace function and take care of children. God knows the marketplace certainly will take care of children but not the way we expect it to," he adds. "WE'VE BEEN talking to PBS, and they have nothing but enthusiasm for the project. The key factor really is the finding of underwriting for it. Public television is not a very wealthy system. They have a great deal of difficulty financing their operations, especially since (President Reagan) has seen fit to veto the latest appropriation for public television. They're in difficult straits, so we have to find corporate underwriting. We're seeking a far-sighted company that feels strongly about the future of the nation to the extent that (the way) we nurture children through television is important...

This show will mine the Folkways catalogue for songs about clocks and time, at least Western conceptions of time. We start with a little bluegrass reflection on clocks and then move onto all sorts of songs with references to time or time keeping. A timely program. Smithsonian Folkways: Sounds to Grow On is a 26-part series hosted by Michael Asch that features the original recordings of Folkways Records.
