Three Money Lies and the Gospel Truth A SERMON BASED ON ECCLESIASTES 5:10-20Here the Preacher deals with lies we tell ourselves about money. They tend to sound like, “I have to have enough, or I won't be secure.” Or, “I need more of it so I can be happy.” These lies enslave us, making us stingy and insecure. The Preacher has truth here that will set us all free. What he does here is push back three money lies and leave us with one hopeful truth.

Sermon Notes - August 15, 2021The Greatest Stories Rarely Told: Uncommon Humility, Part 3 - Grant Hickman Sacrificial GenerosityRadical HospitalityUncommon Humility Undeniable Kingdom Impact Philippians 1:5-8You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross. Genesis 37:2-4This is the account of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he often tended his father's flocks. He worked for his half brothers, the sons of his father's wives Bilhah and Zilpah. But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing. Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe. But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn't say a kind word to him. Genesis 37:5-8One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever. “Listen to this dream,” he said. “We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!” His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them. Genesis 37:19-20Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. “Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams. Genesis 42:6-17Since Joseph was governor of all Egypt and in charge of selling grain to all the people, it was to him that his brothers came. When they arrived, they bowed before him with their faces to the ground Joseph recognized his brothers instantly, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where are you from?” he demanded. “From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “We have come to buy food.” Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they didn't recognize him. And he remembered the dreams he'd had about them many years before. He said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see how vulnerable our land has become.” “No, my lord!” they exclaimed. “Your servants have simply come to buy food. We are all brothers—members of the same family. We are honest men, sir! We are not spies!” “Yes, you are!” Joseph insisted. “You have come to see how vulnerable our land has become.” “Sir,” they said, “there are actually twelve of us. We, your servants, are all brothers, sons of a man living in the land of Canaan. Our youngest brother is back there with our father right now, and one of our brothers is no longer with us.” But Joseph insisted, “As I said, you are spies! This is how I will test your story. I swear by the life of Pharaoh that you will never leave Egypt unless your youngest brother comes here! One of you must go and get your brother. I'll keep the rest of you here in prison. Then we'll find out whether or not your story is true. By the life of Pharaoh, if it turns out that you don't have a younger brother, then I'll know you are spies.” So Joseph put them all in prison for three days. Genesis 42:18-20On the third day Joseph said to them, “I am a God-fearing man. If you do as I say, you will live. If you really are honest men, choose one of your brothers to remain in prison. The rest of you may go home with grain for your starving families. But you must bring your youngest brother back to me. This will prove that you are telling the truth, and you will not die.” To this they agreed. Genesis 44:16-18Judah answered, “Oh, my lord, what can we say to you? How can we explain this? How can we prove our innocence? God is punishing us for our sins. My lord, we have all returned to be your slaves—all of us, not just our brother who had your cup in his sack.” “No,” Joseph said. “I would never do such a thing! Only the man who stole the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may go back to your father in peace.” Then Judah stepped forward and said, “Please, my lord, let your servant say just one word to you. Please, do not be angry with me, even though you are as powerful as Pharaoh himself. Genesis 44:33“So please, my lord, let me stay here as a slave instead of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. For how can I return to my father if the boy is not with me? I couldn't bear to see the anguish this would cause my father!” Genesis 45:1-3Joseph could stand it no longer. There were many people in the room, and he said to his attendants, “Out, all of you!” So he was alone with his brothers when he told them who he was. Then he broke down and wept. He wept so loudly the Egyptians could hear him, and word of it quickly carried to Pharaoh's palace. “I am Joseph!” he said to his brothers. “Is my father still alive?” But his brothers were speechless! They were stunned to realize that Joseph was standing there in front of them. “Please, come closer,” he said to them. So they came closer. And he said again, “I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into slavery in Egypt. But don't be upset, and don't be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives. This famine that has ravaged the land for two years will last five more years, and there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. God has sent me ahead of you to keep you and your families alive and to preserve many survivors. So it was God who sent me here, not you! And he is the one who made me an adviser to Pharaoh—the manager of his entire palace and the governor of all Egypt. Humility is a Choice Luke 9:23-25Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed? Progress not Perfection Genesis 45:5But don't be upset, and don't be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives. Genesis 50:20You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.” Uncommon Humility Helps Others

Episode 54 6/6/20Here in New York restaurants are still closed downwe are hoping to travel at some point this summer but we are no rush to get somewhere where everything is closed. Our restaurants are just starting to open and they're packed with people. We're trying to use our best judgment in avoiding large crowds but still trying to enjoy ourselves. We go on hikes but we pick places that are not popular heights. We live a little over 1 hour from the George Washington bridge so we get a lot of folks from the city in this area who won who enjoy the hiking also. We've done a pretty good job avoiding crowds on the trails. We've also taken our kayak and thrown it in local Marsh and reservoir without issue. Now if you remember or towards the middle to latter part of our last trip to the southeast I was complaining of back pain and I thought it was from sitting too much and the bad couch and it turns out I have two bulged discs. When we returned home we started cutting a lot of firewood and my left elbow started hurting and it turns out I have tendonitis and fluid on the elbow.so as it turns out being home during this. Is a good time to have everything addressed. It's interesting us and probably the whole world is experiencing quite a lot of stress with the coronavirus. and at this time my website has its lowest number of visitors ever. I do know that people do not like to reach out for help with stress and stress Management. It's all very interesting , human nature that is. when we were returning home from our Southeast trip in March everything was beginning to shut down so I knew that I would be missing out on the opportunity of helping a lot of people at schools and clients in Hudson valley. Been really busy working on the RV. I put in a divider curtain and and new shocks all the way around. a buddy of mine suggested new shocks when I was explaining to him how the wind affected the RV and the jarring pounding of the RV when we hit potholes I explained to him that are RV only has about 28,000 miles on it but he explained that it is 7 years old. he asked me if I was going to do the shocks myself and I said no I do not have a lift and he said that you don't need a lift for the shocks. I pulled up a video on YouTube and it's pretty straightforward so I bought for koni shocks which were a little bit more expensive but I figured if I'm going to do it let me do it right. So I swap them out man what a difference they make. So much smoother on bumps a lot less way going on and off of entrance and exits on highways. And a lot less jarring. I will post pictures of that soon also put a link in the show notes for it. However on spreaker I cannot put active hyperlinks in the show notes. but what I will do is I will put the link to my Facebook page with pictures be located and unfortunately you'll have to copy and paste them into a browser sorry about that. Guest: Eric KalenzeThere are a lot of lessons throughout this whole podcast episode that tie into each other but the overwhelming sense is that we're living through a time where you can't just take someone else's work, or ideas, or plans, and use them in your school or district and expect success. Eric's book "What The Academy Taught Us" is his story of what they did to help students who were on the verge of leaving school entirely, before it was too late. It may not be the solution for everyone, but we're convinced the ideas in the book will work for a lot of people.**Note: We had some issues cleaning up Eric's audio quality, normally we can overcome the discrepancy between the quality of our audio and our guests, but keep in mind it is completely out of our control.** Eric on Twitter: https://twitter.com/erickalenzeWebsite: https://erickalenze.wordpress.com/Notes:#ChatOnEducation is now LIVE on https://twitch.tv/insideparticipate every FRIDAY at 8pm ET.      Masochist May kicks off with a suggestion that made some cry and others abandon all shreds of hope left to them.     When his car runs off the road author Paul Sheldon is taken in by his number one fan. She only has one small request for her help.... Misery.     It's dark. Vin keeps telling us he's an anti-hero. The whole flick might really be an anti-evolution work. Who can really tell in the Pitch Black.     The first of many listener choices this month... An evil clown, voodoo, there's an ice cream truck. Killjoy? Yes, yes, it did.     And Tyler is forgotten, Dave is too old for drinking games, Craig's will is broken, and Kevin only makes six Dad Jokes. Join us, won't you?Episode 152- Masochist May: Killjoy Was Here

Faith, hope and Suffering?Sermon 6: 1 Peter 2:19-25Open Doors is an organisation that supports the persecuted Church and informs Christians throughout the world about the plight of persecuted Christians. The organize one Sunday a year and ask Churches to pray for the persecuted Christians: Sunday for the persecuted Church.I support this effort and set this Sunday apart for us to do exactly that. This morning's outline is simple and with follow Peter's discussion of suffering for Christ's sake in 1 Peter 2:19-25. My outline is simple: It starts with A CHALLENGE 2:11-12, A CONVICTION 2:19-20, and A CALLING 2:21-25.A Challenge 11-12Peter calls his reader's beloved and then points them to consider their walk and God's calling for them to be strangers (he's already called them that in chapter 1)... act like it. What is the challenge: let the unsaved see you walk, so that they might glorify God. This is quite the challenge and here is the aim… evangelism. Living life in front of a watching sea of unbelievers.A Conviction 19-20Here is the central matter… suffering is evidence of grace. We don't think like that. But the persecuted Church teaches us to bring things into a proper perspective. Suffering for Christ may not be fun, but it does give you Joy. You don't suffer alone, because the Holy Spirit comforts us when we suffer. Jesus said it and Peter repeats it: blessed are the persecuted… it is a blessing and not a curse. Grace and not defeat.A Calling 21-25Walk like Jesus. Where did Christ's walk take him? To the cross. Should we expect anything less if we are following in his footsteps? Pick up your cross, Jesus said.

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them.” - Matthew 18:20Here’s another very familiar, and very misapplied verse. It’s used to encourage us to pray in small groups and to encourage pastors and teachers when attendance isn’t what they hoped it would be. Unfortunately, this verse has nothing to do with prayer or church attendance. It’s all about seekers my unity in the Church, applying Old Testament Jewish legal language. Let’s talk about it!
