I was hungry for language. And stories. And how to tell our stories. That's what this book gave me. But let's not make a Bible out of it.Today we meet Kris Kleindienst and we're talking about the queer book that saved her life: Diving Into The Wreck by Adrienne Rich.Kris is a 72-year old queer lesbian writer, bookseller, and activist. She owns Left Bank Books, a 56-year old progressive bookstore in St. Louis, Missouri. Kris edited a collection of activist essays titled This Is What Lesbian Looks Like: Dyke Activists Take on The 21st Century, published by Firebrand Press and winner of a Lambda Literary Award. She was a gold medal winning and 4-time participant in The Gay Games (also the co-founder of Team St. Louis). She has won multiple awards locally, regionally and nationally for my work with Left Bank Books. She is at work on a memoir about growing up in the 50s-60s with a Lesbian mother. Fun fact: She once got high with Armistead Maupin.Diving into the Wreck: Poems 1971–1972 was Adrienne Rich's seventh book of poetry, an anthology of poems described as provocative and which co-won the 1974 National Book Award for Poetry with Allen Ginsberg's The Fall of America. Adrienne Rich (1929-2012) was an award-winning poet and essayist.Special Limited SeriesThis episode is part of a special limited series of episodes featuring only guests who are owners or staff at LGBTQ bookstores. Airing April-June 2025, these episodes will feature six bookstores across the United States and United Kingdom.Today's guest owns Left Bank Books. Opened in 1969 by a group of graduate students at Washington University who wanted to create a place where one could find all kinds of literature, Left Bank Books is the oldest and largest independently-owned full-line bookstore in St. Louis, Missouri. In this episode, Jeremy Cordeaux offers his usual blend of commentary, nostalgia, and critique, covering a wide range of topics from the evolution of the magazine industry to modern climate policies. He reflects on societal changes, discusses the implications of government decisions, and provides his perspective on current events. Cordeaux also shares some light-hearted moments, including reflections on historical events and notable birthdays. Key Topics Discussed Nostalgia for the Magazine Industry: Reflections on the once-thriving magazine industry and its rapid decline in the digital age. Government and Society: Criticism of recent government decisions, including the rebranding of the ombudsman to "ombud" and the push for the "Gay Games" in Melbourne. Climate Change Policy: Discussion on the irony of government spending on wetlands, which are significant producers of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Electric Vehicles (EVs): Skepticism about the hype surrounding electric vehicles, particularly concerning their resale value and the environmental impact of battery disposal. Labor and Union Policies: Concerns about the right-to-disconnect legislation and its implications for work culture, particularly in relation to union influence on labor policies. Military and Brain Injuries: Discussion on the impact of military service on brain health, especially in relation to the shockwaves from weapons. Regulation and Red Tape: Critique of excessive regulation and its impact on businesses, with a focus on the food industry and the broader economy. Vitamins and Supplements: Examination of the vitamin industry and the questionable benefits of supplements, based on a long-term study showing no significant impact on longevity. Historical Reflections: Reflections on notable historical events and birthdays, including the abolition of slavery in Britain, the invention of Pepsi Cola, and the advent of the electric guitar in popular music. Daniel and Garet dive into the concept of “short and sweet,” discussing how brevity can enhance various aspects of life, from storytelling to relationships. They explore the balance between keeping things concise while still conveying depth and meaning, touching on personal anecdotes and larger cultural phenomena like the upcoming Gay Games in Melbourne. The hosts challenge the notion that longer is always better, proposing that sometimes the most impactful moments are those that are brief but memorable. How do we determine when to keep things short and when to dive deep? And what can the LGBTQ+ community learn from the practice of mindful brevity in both personal and public spheres?Key Highlights:Understanding “Short and Sweet”: The hosts discuss the value of brevity in storytelling and daily interactions, and how this approach can often lead to more meaningful connections. The Gay Games 2030: A conversation about Melbourne's bid to host the Gay Games, exploring its history, inclusivity, and the importance of representation in sports.Navigating Relationships: Insights on embracing short-term relationships, focusing on the lessons and growth they offer rather than their duration.Effective Communication: How to say more with less—developing the skill of impactful communication through mindful listening and concise expression.Cultural Reflections: Daniel and Garrett reflect on the importance of valuing experiences for what they are, without the pressure of longevity, and how this perspective can enrich both personal growth and community dynamics. ___SUPPORT THE SHOW ON PATREONJoin our Patreon! Denver has emerged as the only U.S. city left out of 10 places worldwide being considered for the 2030 Gay Games. The games — which began in 1982 and happen every four years — invite over 10,000 LGBTQ+ people to compete in more than 30 different sports. With Denver being a serious contender for this celebrated event, no better time than now to look back at this city's storied LGBTQ+ history and culture. Back in 2022, host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi went on a tour of Capitol Hill with comics artist and historian B. Erin Cole to learn all about the gayborhood's deep roots in the Mile High. First, we speak with Dr. David York, the music director of the Houston Pride Chorus. We'll explore their upcoming holiday performance, "Ring it In," and get a glimpse of the rich tapestry of talent that forms the chorus. You'll feel the power of unity and the importance of allies in the LGBTQ+ community echoing through their music. And surprise, the Houston Bronze Ensemble, a handbell choir, joins in the concert to add more harmony. Our next stop takes us to the vibrant scene of the Houston Pride Band. We catch up with Jason Svatek, its president to talk about the band's upcoming holiday concert, "Twas the Night," and their community engagements. Aspiring musicians take note - this band is open to all skill levels. Also, we'd love for you to show your support and join us at their concert on December 9th at Match in Midtown. Finally, we roll the red carpet for the stunningly versatile actress Sandra Bernhardt. From shattering norms as the first bisexual character on a sitcom to her captivating performances in "Pose" and "American Horror Story," Sandra's journey is one to behold. Guess what? We also touch upon major issues like the Church of England's view on same-sex marriage, the mysterious death of Latin America's first out non-binary judge, and the challenges faced by the 11th Gay Games organizers in Hong Kong. So, tune in, engage and be part of the transformation.

The Gay Games wrapped up last week and we celebrate these brave athletes whose participation is a political act in itself. From the Gay Games to GAMETIME where we ask "How Gay Is It?". . . .the answer: Sports are Gay. Growing up in rural Kentucky, John Brock comes from a long line of unsuccessful farmers. As a young man, he fell in love with his best friend (a handsome young man) and quickly realized that Kentucky was not a safe place, so he moved to New York. After five years, John moved to Atlanta for the vibrant gay community. John served as the commissioner of Hotlanta Volleyball and participated in Gay Games 1990 and 1994. At the same time, John attended graduate school at Emory University and later worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a toxicologist. After working way too hard for 10 years, doing research in 17 countries, and sitting in traffic far too long, John moved to Asheville in 2001 to be a professor and create a nurturing home life. John now teaches at the University of North Carolina Asheville and consults on a national study of birth defects. John lives in a loving web of people but, oddly, is currently single. He would like to date (hint hint). He is currently raising his nearly perfect adopted 16-year-old son who will soon go off to college. He also is raising a sweet, somewhat neurotic dog, who will not. Asheville is John's home base but he dreams of living in other countries, one or two month a year, and some new adventures.· Asheville is a city located in the western part of the state of North Carolina, United States. Here are some quick facts about Asheville:· Population: As of the 2020 Census, the estimated population of Asheville was 97,317.· Geography: Asheville is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin: In August the news broke that WorldPride 2025 was no longer going to be hosted by Taiwan. Less than a year ago, InterPride and Taiwan had celebrated the selection of Kaohsiung Pride's bid over the Capital Pride Alliance of Washington D.C. to host WorldPride 2025 in Taiwan. The announcement about WorldPride Taiwan 2025 was hugely significant since Taiwan was the first country in Asia to legalize same sex marriage in 2019 and It would be the first ever WorldPride event to be held in East Asia. My listeners will recall that we did an episode about this news last December with Darien Chen in episode 162. What had happened to make Kaohsiung Pride and the Taiwan Preparation Committee decide to withdraw from hosting WorldPride Taiwan 2025? In August I came across a tweet about the cancellation by Bi-Khim Hsiao, Taiwan's Representative to the United States. She had tweeted an article written by David Yu, Don't Sacrifice Taiwan in the Fight for LGBT Rights. The article had been published in Foreign Policy. I reached out David and I invited him to come onto Talking Taiwan as a guest to discuss and reflect on what happened. David is Contractor CTO of an LA-based life sciences startup. I also reached out to the Kaohsiung Pride committee, and InterPride for comment but have not received any responses to date. This episode of Talking Taiwan has been sponsored by NATWA, the North America Taiwanese Women's Association. NATWA was founded in 1988, and its mission is: to evoke a sense of self-esteem and enhance women's dignity, to oppose gender discrimination and promote gender equality, to fully develop women's potential and encourage their participation in public affairs, to contribute to the advancement of human rights and democratic development in Taiwan, to reach out and work with women's organizations worldwide to promote peace for all. To learn more about NATWA visit their website: www.natwa.com Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: David's involvement with ITASA The article that David wrote for Foreign Policy about the cancellation of WorldPride Taiwan 2025, which was tweeted by Bi-khim Hsiao How Taiwan won the bid to host WorldPride 2025 in November of 2021 How on August 12, 2022, the WorldPride Taiwan 2025 Facebook page posted an announcement stating that they would be terminating hosting WorldPride 2025 What's been reported in the media regarding the cancellation of WorldPride Taiwan 2025 The statement posted on the WorldPride Taiwan 2025 Facebook page regarding their termination of hosting WorldPride 2025 InterPride's request that the event name be changed from WorldPride Taiwan 2025 to WorldPride Kaohsiung 2025, and the offer to use WorldPride Kaohsiung, Taiwan How InterPride's application for consultative status at the United Nations and China may have influenced to request to change the WorldPride event name Should Kaohsiung Pride and the Taiwan Preparation Committee found a way to still host WorldPride 2025 in Taiwan What is the loss of not hosting WorldPride 2025 in Taiwan LGBTQIA rights in Europe Europe's views and dealings with China How Guzzler Leong, Standing Director of Kaohsiung Pride (originally from Macau) was able to have his same sex marriage recognized in Taiwan, however his case does not change the precedent of Taiwan only recognizing transnational same sex marriages to citizens of countries where same sex marriage is legal The parallels between Taiwan's situation in the global arena and LGBTQIA rights within mainstream society How China interferes with Taiwan's representation internationally How Taiwan has to compete under the name Chinese Taipei in the Olympics David's personal experiences at sporting events where Taiwan was not accurately represented and how he handled it An inspiring quote about coming out, by Harvey Milk, a gay activist and member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors How the Gay Games 2023 is being co-hosted by Guadalajara and Hong Kong and Dennis Philipse the founder and co-organizer of Gay Games Hong Kong has resigned How to move forward from the cancellation of WorldPride Taiwan 2025 Related Links: To view all related links for this article, click link below: https://talkingtaiwan.com/what-caused-the-cancellation-of-worldpride-taiwan-2025-our-discussion-with-david-yu-ep-220/
A compilation of witness accounts from when inflation and the cost of living were seriously affecting people's lives, among other topics. In 1971, inflation was a huge problem in the USA so the President, Richard Nixon, made one of the most drastic moves in economic history; abandoning the Gold Standard. It became known as the 'Nixon Shock' and nearly caused a trade war between America and its allies. But, it also saved the US economy from a crisis. Ben Henderson spoke to Bob Hormats, an economic adviser in the Nixon administration, who was at the heart of decision-making. In 1997, Bulgaria was in financial meltdown with hyperinflation making money worth a lot less. The country had emerged out of communism following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989. Like other post-Soviet regimes, the country found the transition from communism to capitalism harder than expected. The President of Bulgaria, Petar Stoyanov, knew he had to do something and a recovery plan from one of Ronald Reagan's key economic advisers was on the table. But would it work? Matt Pintus has been speaking to Steve Hanke, an economics professor. In January 1980, Indira Gandhi's Congress (I) party was voted into power in India. Before the election, inflation meant that the cost of onions was unaffordable for many Indians. The price of the vegetable became a political hot potato in the election campaign. Reena Stanton-Sharma spoke to Suda Pai, a former Professor of Political Science at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. In 2012, Syrian government soldiers surrounded Darayya, a suburb of Damascus, bombing buildings and searching for people who had spoken out against President Assad. Hundreds of people died over four days in what was described by activists as a “massacre”. Mohamad Zarda has been speaking to Laura Jones. It has been 40 years since the first Gay Games were held in San Francisco in 1982. Attracting a large crowd and featuring more than 1,000 athletes from more than 100 countries, the event was organised by a group of LGBT activists, including former Olympians, to raise awareness of homophobia in sport. The Gay Games are now held every four years at venues around the world. In 2019, Ashley Byrne spoke to organiser Sara Waddell Lewinstein and athlete Rick Tomin. Izzy Cerullo is someone with a sporting CV to envy. Born in the United States to Brazilian parents, the rugby star is a double-Olympian, a Pan-American Games bronze medallist, a five-time South American champion and the first Brazilian to become an ambassador for the Athlete Ally charity. And if you didn't know any of that, you'll almost certainly have seen the moment when Izzy's now-wife Marjorie proposed to her following the Olympics in Rio. After retiring, Izzy has become an ambassador for the Gay Games, and is now a member of the Organising Committee for the Olympics and Paralympics in Los Angeles in 2028. So, this is a cracking conversation with someone we've wanted to have on the podcast for a long time, where we talk about all of that and more – from the pride of pulling on your country's jersey to crowdfunding your Olympic journey, to visibility, retirement, finding a new career… and yes, that proposal! We really loved this episode, and we think you will as well. WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @IzzyCerullo WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley jack.murley@bbc.co.uk
