Today we're diving into holiday hosting, gluten-free baking, and healing around food with award winning cookbook author, photographer and professionally trained pastry chef Aran Goyoaga. Her latest two books include: Cannelle et Vanille Bakes Simple and Cannelle et Vanille: Nourishing, Gluten-Free Recipes for Every Meal and Mood.Aran describes her childhood growing up in her grandparent's pastry shop in the Basque region of Spain and explains how baking became her connection back to her family when she moved the United States in her early twenties (and how she eventually left the corporate world to become a pastry chef). Aran also shares her journey going gluten-free due to health issues after her kids were born, and we dive into Christmas, offering tips for stress-free hosting and gluten-free baking.Aran also opens up early in the conversation (11:14) about how she found healing around food after experiencing an eating disorder in her early twenties. As we've explored here on this podcast, food can be so nuanced—it can be a driver for connection and love, and at the same it can be a source of deep stress, particularly for women. We share these stories here to let you know that you're not alone if you've ever felt anything similar, and also that there's healing to be found.Aran has also shared her recipe for Sweet Potato & Chocolate Marble Gingerbread, which you can find in the newsletter: https://mindbodyspiritfood.substack.com/p/aran-goyoagaEpisode Links* Mind, Body, Spirit, FOOD Newsletter: https://mindbodyspiritfood.substack.com/* Find Nicki on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nickisizemore* One-on-one sessions with Nicki: https://mindbodyspiritfood.substack.com/p/coaching-and-cooking-sessions* Aran's website: https://www.arangoyoaga.com/* Find Aran on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cannellevanille/* Aran's latest book (one of my favorite cookbooks), Cannelle et Vanille Bake Simple: https://amzn.to/3ZqCujo This is a public episode. Hello and welcome to a topless (really!) episode of Tasty Pages, a podcast from Cooking The Books! We discuss the upcoming Powerball lottery drawing and our plans for what to do with the $2 billion jackpot we are certain will be ours. In a new segment we are cleverly calling "Food News", we share a story about a daring $200,000 wine heist at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Spain. This leads us into a discussion on thievery films that we couldn't remember the names of ('Thomas Crown Affair'!) In other food news, with Thanksgiving on the horizon, experts (yes, experts!) are warning of a potential turkey shortage. Say it isn't so! Not to worry - we share some alternatives to the classic bird for your meal. Our show question is: what are your favorite food-related podcasts? This was really just a shameless attempt to gain compliments on our own show, if we are being honest. Then, we talk about our featured cookbook, 'Cannelle et Vanille' by Aran Goyoaga. For our Gastro Obscura segment - Victoria takes us to Austria for a truly unique spa experience. Per usual, we finish things off with a lame food-related joke. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tastypages/support
Baking gluten-free is a bear, even for experienced bakers. A lot of the usual rules don't apply and gluten-free baking has tons of methods and practices that bakers need to know before they can achieve “GF” baking success. We get this episode's question from Connie, who knows her way around an oven; she simply had disaster after disaster trying to bake gluten-free. To help Connie out, Smidgen host (and infamous non-baker) Anne Milneck brings on Kelly Courson of CeliacChicks.com to get into some of the ways bakers can make beautiful and delicious baked goods, and to share some of the factors that go into successful gluten-free baking. If you want to make delectable goodies for your friends or family that forgo gluten, in this episode you'll learn about several key ingredients every GF bakers need to know; you'll have cookbooks and recipes that are kitchen-tested; you'll be connected to mixes that are specially formulated for the home cook. To top off all this valuable information, Anne heads into the Red Stick Spice Company teaching kitchen—with some help from friend of the shop Kayla and bakes a classic birthday cake, complete with rainbow sprinkles. Mentioned on the show: - If you know someone with celiac disease, Kelly's website CeliacChicks.com is a must. Follow Kelly on Instagram. - Kelly recommends you try Cup4Cup products—flours, mixes, recipes. See the Cup4Cup website here. - Some cookbooks to try: Culinary Institute of America Gluten-Free Baking is one Kelly likes; Anne got the birthday cake recipe from Cannelle et Vanille by Aran Goyoaga. - Were you tempted by talk of the almond cake on Smidgen? Full episode transcript Hey friends I'm Shawna, your nerdy girlfriend and life coach from simpleonpurpose.ca. Welcome to the podcast for the mom who wants to slow down, simplify and show up for her life on purpose. So I've been kind of sitting on this podcast episode idea for a while to share what I call the currently list. And the currently list is that what I'm currently doing and enjoying and eating and making. It's something that I would share in the simple Saturdays newsletter from time to time. And then I just kind of sat on it, I thought, nobody's really interested in the random things I'm doing with my life. And then I had a phone call this morning with one of my best friends who I talked to like every six months, you know, those best friends who have just been part of your life for so long, that you can just pick up every six months and run through an hour of everything. And we talked about everything we talked about our parents, period, underwear, the books, we're reading what our cats are doing, like our mom life experience.
Tune into the new episode of the MotherFood podcast where I have the pleasure of speaking to Aran Goyoaga, pastry chef, food writer, stylist and photographer, about her journey into food and motherhood. We speak openly about our relationship with the food of our childhood, the wonders and challenges of pregnancy, overcoming an eating disorder, and finding a healing power of cooking and sharing food with your own family. Aran, one of the first 'official' instagram members, talks humbly about how she follows her intuition, never striving too hard for success or accolades, and how all elements of her life seem to exist in an organic harmony, not forcing a distinction between family life and her work. Aran Goyoaga is a cookbook author, photographer and creator of Cannelle et Vanille. Everything that Aran touches holds so much beauty – her photos, her food, her words. One of the things that makes Aran so special is her genuine care and honesty. She isn’t afraid to talk about the messy parts of being human, including as she says her “shadow side.” We go deep in our conversation and talk about everything from searching for and the claiming of identity, to feelings of not belonging, eating disorders, depression, the incredible power of gentleness, and learning to listen to intuition. You’ll also hear us talk about our shared Spanish roots and I loved hearing Aran speak about the ways her father and whole family have deeply influenced her. I don’t have the adequate words to describe how much I enjoyed this conversation. Aran’s salient and empathetic advice, artistic sensibility, and stories are full of so much meaning, truth, and they sparked many moments of inspiration for me. I’m so grateful for this conversation and am elated to share it with you all. **Where to find Aran: ** Instagram Website(s): http://www.cannellevanille.com/ and https://www.arangoyoaga.com/ Pre-order her new cookbook “Cannelle et Vanille” here ! Aran Goyoaga is known around the world for her award-winning blog, Canelle et Vanille. Her ethereal food photography and styling have been featured in the New York Times, Food & Wine, Vogue and so many more. What you may not know is that Aran has struggled with anxiety, an eating disorder, and a gluten intolerance. Not exactly ideal for a pastry chef. In her new video series, A Cook’s Remedy, she shares—beautifully and vulnerably—how food has become the best therapy for healing old wounds and surrendering to the present moment. I loved this interview not only because Aran is such a gifted storyteller, but a seeker of truth. We were both recording in noisy studios but left the episode unedited so you don’t miss a thing. blog: cannellevanille.com instagram: @canellevanille
Episode 15 Life After Gluten On this episode, our 15th, I talk to Aran Goyoaga of the site www.cannellevanille.com and Paul Graham, author of the memoir In Memory of Bread. Aran is a Basque - American living in Seattle; Paul lives in upstate New York. They've never met. But they have something in common - both learned they could no longer eat gluten, long after their lives were shaped by the stuff. This episodes explores how they have approached life - gluten free. It's all about adversity, tears, triumphs and the making of new food memories on this episode of The Food Podcast. PS - and we dive a little into tinnitus. Sorry if I've over-shared...
On today's THE FOOD SEEN, we're charmed by soft spoken Basque ex-pat Aran Goyoaga, who's talents as a food writer, photographer, and stylist, creatively coalesced on her wonderfully popular blog, Cannelle Et Vanille. Born to a family of farmers and pastry chefs, there were pinxtos, tortilla competitions, and txakoli abound, but during the birth of her first child, she was afflicted by a number of debilitating symptoms, later found out to be the effects of an extreme gluten intolerance. Aran's premier cookbook “Small Plates Sweet Treats” is stunning, whimsical and mouth-watering, all with the use of alternative flours. Plus, hear us wax poetic about bacalao pil pil, a classic Spanish dish, proving that time and effort can transform simple ingredients into a most memorable morsel. This episode was sponsored by Fairway Market. “I learned a lot by watching my grandfather describe food, cook it, and cooking with my grandmother in a certain way… It's [family] roots.” [7:50] “It [Cannelle Et Vanille] was never a money-maker. I didn't even know that you could make money off of a blog- or a book or anything! It was something to do in the kitchen, and it just took off from there.” [12:00] — Aran Goyoaga on THE FOOD SEEN
