Leadership Happens

If you think pens, soda, and car wax sound like the most boring things ever—think again. Our guest, marketing powerhouse Jeff Werderman, has spent 30 years leading at brands like Coca-Cola, Boost Mobile, and ArmorAll, and now he's running the show at Pentel of America (yes, the pen company). But this isn't about writing instruments—it's about writing the new rules for leadership.   Jeff's got some seriously controversial takes on what's wrong with today's workforce, and why your leadership style is probably driving your best people straight out the door. From leading teams of 80 to navigating the Gen Z takeover, Jeff digs into why creating a learning culture—where even the most junior employees act like CEOs of their own desks—is the only way forward.   He doesn't hold back on why hiring for attitude (and the occasional ego bruising) is more important than skill sets and how letting your team think for themselves could be your secret weapon. The episode is loaded with controversy and wisdom. Ready for the hard truth? According to Jeff, you need to embrace the chaos and hand over the reins. And if your team isn't roasting your “lame” social media content, well... they might already be eyeing the exit.   This episode will leave you rethinking everything from your hiring strategy to how you manage your teams. Takeaways: hire for opinions, embrace transparency, and if your employees aren't calling you out—ask yourself why!   Have questions or personal experiences? Drop us a message or join the conversation on LinkedIn —share your own hiring and retention horror stories and tips. Don't miss out—subscribe now and share this episode with your network! Hiring matters—mess it up, and your best talent will be gone before you know it! Key Takeaways: Step Back to Step Up: Discover how empowering others can transform leadership dynamics and drive team success. Hire for Attitude: Understand why a goal-oriented mindset is more valuable than traditional qualifications in today's workforce. Embrace Transparency: Learn how open communication fosters trust and a more productive workplace culture. Create Space for Innovation: Find out how cultivating an environment that encourages creativity can lead to groundbreaking ideas. Empower Ownership: Explore how giving employees autonomy boosts engagement and enhances performance. About Our Guest: Meet Jeff Werderman, the Marketing Yoda and Brand Whisperer. As the Director of Marketing at Pentel of America since March 2018, Jeff leads the marketing function for this venerable global writing instrument company. With over three decades of experience, he is known for awakening the force in brands through inspiring strategies. His impressive career includes revitalizing Chex Cereal as Brand Manager at Nestlé Purina, where he reversed multi-year declines, and transforming Vistage Worldwide as Chief Marketing Officer, where he rebuilt a team of 35 professionals and drove significant increases in member acquisition and retention. At Boost Mobile, Jeff served as VP of Marketing, scaling the brand's growth by targeting urban youth, which resulted in a remarkable increase in subscribers and revenue. Before these roles, he spent nearly a decade at The Coca-Cola Company, where he expanded alliances with Disney and Universal Studios, enhancing Coke's presence in popular culture. Additionally, he contributed as a Consultant at Young's Market Company and held leadership positions at Armor All and Concentrus. Beyond his corporate achievements, Jeff is an Adjunct Professor at California State University, Fullerton, shaping the future of marketing. With a unique blend of creativity and industry insight, Jeff is truly a force of nature in branding. About Your Host: Ken Schmitt is the CEO and founder of TurningPoint Executive Search. His specialty is helping companies scale from $0 to multi-millions in revenue, through both conventional paid acquisition and non-conventional growth hacks. After exiting his most recent business, Solve (YC S17), Shawn spent time mentoring and advising companies at several of LA's top venture capital firms, while incubating a number of SaaS and eCommerce brands. He also spent time at Guthy Renker, a multi-billion dollar direct marketing firm (best known for brands such as Proactiv, Meaningful Beauty, IT Cosmetics and Perricone MD). Apart from Pivot CMO, Shawn loves to work with founders to find creative ways to scale their businesses. Here are the highlights of this episode: 1:44 Shawn's ideal Client: It honestly changed overtime. Initially we were working with a lot of start-ups just because I was doing a lot of mentoring or things like that. But it has already morphed across the board, so we have multi-billion companies like Energizer and Armor All. So, it ranges if the ideal company wants to grow. They may or may not have a massive budget, but it doesn't really matter to us, it's more on the growth mindset. We love working with companies who are breaking out from that corporate mentality; like people getting caught up with PowerPoint presentations or stuff like that. We really want to move really fast; we want to help companies scale very quickly. 2:45Problem Shawn helps solve: It's really scale; it's scale to paid acquisition. And then put some growth stuff on the side but it's how we get a really scaleable, predictable channel of marketing for us. Either it's Facebook ads, google ads, Pinterest, Tiktok, emails.. like how we can have a solid strategy that's scaleable, predictable, and repeatable. Because I think a lot of people goes "hey, let's send a lot of emails out.. hey, let's post on social media" these are not scalable, not predictable. We want channels that are very straightforward and can live on with the business. 3:41Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Shawn: Number one, if you are already trying these things or you are already in some of these platforms and you feel like you are unsuccessful or you are not growing enough or you are not moving fast enough. I think speed matters a lot in anything when it comes to marketing. Number two, if you are in some other channels and you feel like "hey, we're not growing fast enough" or "hey, is my business from a marketing perspective isn't predictable?" I think those are some really good things as well. We also have some companies who wants to hit a certain milestone or they are trying to raise funding or whatever the case is, and they need to have the marketing going to show investors that "we are hitting what we need to hit" and that's really predictable. Basically, there's a fire that we can throw gasoline on to continue it to grow and grow. 4:44What are some of the common mistakes that folks make before finding Shawn and his solution: First thing is just working with the wrong people, just not having the right partner. A lot of these ad platforms are not that easy to use. If you go on cheap with some freelancer abroad or something like that, it's the same as letting money on fire because they may not necessarily know what they're doing. Danny van Dongen is an accomplished racing driver and has started several businesses in Europe and the US, including a racing school, a racing series, as well as successfully starting up Hankook Motorsports that offers tires for racing in the US to nearly all forms of both amateur and professional racing series.  We would like to thank Danny and the team for their RS4's our tire of choice for endurance racing and the official tire of both Lucky Dog and WRL endurance racing series.  We try to summarize some of Danny's racing career initially and then we move into the area of tires, their construction, and their proper use in racing.  This is hoped to be a good introduction to tire technology, hopefully we can have Danny back for a 201 level discussion. On this Dominating with Dawson episode, we talk about the monster under the bed that many do not acknowledge, fear as a factor in going fast and going faster.  Fear is literally a totally natural thing and affects everyone at some point.  We talk about it, where it may arise, and several ways of dealing with it.  This may be a first of several parts in this area. You can follow Danny on Instagram at @DannyvanDongen We hope you enjoy this episode! Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers   Highlights from this episode include: 1)  How his racing experience has helped with both car testing and development as well as tire testing, also complimenting his business development in both areas. 2)  How his race at the 25 Hours at Thunderhill went last year and the pleasure of a mostly night race on a very muddy track.  His skid school training was really pushed to the limit. 3)  How the different Hankook Motorsports tires are designed and manufactured to be longer lasting and more stable, perfect for endurance racing. 4)  A discussion of the benefits and challenges in designing a tire, both slicks/racing tires as well as the 180 tread wear tires we race. 5)  The basics of tire designations and understanding the letters and numbers typically on a tire such as 245/40 ZR17 vs 225/50 VR16 etc. 6)  Tips on tire and rim selection and the importance of the interaction of the rim width and the tire tread width. 7)  Important considerations like rim width to tire width, tire profile, tire loading, tire circumference interaction with the car gearing, etc. 8)  How the mass of a tire affects the heating up of the tire and affects the endurance/stability of the tires. 9)  Whether you need to break in a tire, how to break it in, and why the cars are always swerving back and forth at the beginning of a race. 10)  How best to pre-heat your tires on pace laps.  Also, please avoid the marbles, nothing good can come from them. 11)  Heat cycling, proper tire break in, and storage of tires for racing slicks and possibly RS4's.  Sunlight is not your tire's friend. 12)  Optimum tire temperatures and hot tire pressures for the RS4's and similar tires. 13)  Whether heat cycles are an issue on RS4's, as well as racing tires and slicks. 14)  Bill reminisces about his bad Armor All experience when he was much younger. 15)  The importance of tire temperature and pressure and general windows for the Hankook tires.  Including how to measure and interpret the tire temperatures when testing at the track, as well as suggested car or tire changes to respond to tire temperature variation across a tire or from side to side and/or front to back. 16)  Temperature ranges and pressure ranges for slicks and R comps tires and how it varies by the compound you select. 17)  Autocross users may need to look at using tire warmers to alleviate the problem of thermal transients and never reaching a true steady state temperature or pressure. 18)  Jason from Lucky Dog has been keeping a secret from us related to using RS4's in the rain on a track.  We will have to talk with him at Charlotte, lol. 19)  A good discussion of filling the tires with air vs nitrogen vs carbon dioxide.  The key is keeping the water out so that it wont boil in the tire affecting the stability of the air pressure during a race. 20)  What is involved in keeping tire records and how to actually use the information.  Sounds like Bill will be making another excel spreadsheet immediately. 21)  We tried to get some breaking news on the new RS5's but we did find two new size additions that are coming soon.  All NDA's stayed intact during the episode. 22)  Vicki brings up the time when Bill lost a tire, again.  She just can't help it whenever an opportunity arises. 23)  Vicki is jealous of the Lucky Dog RS4 tires having a Lucky Dog sticker and is trying to figure out how to do it with our logo.  Still tbd but she is all over it.

T (https://radioarizonarv.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/RoofGard_Gallon.gif) his episode is the last of a 3 part series about Repairing, Cleaning and Treating an RV Rubber Roof. Treating the Rubber Roof is the final step of the 3 main steps to Maintaining and Extending the life of the RV Rubber Roof. Treating the Rubber Roof comes in at the end of the cleaning and repair stages. Before you treat the Rubber Roof you will want to recheck the roof for any minor repairs that you might have missed after cleaning. It is important to do these repairs before you treat the roof because the Dicor Lap Sealant or any similar brand of rubber roof sealant will not adhere if the treatment is applied first. We highly recommend Dior Lap Sealant because Dicor manufactures rubber roofs and they know what works. After all of your repairs are done you can take the Dicor Roof Gard or a similar product and go up on the roof and either use a spray bottle or sponge mop and start applying in small areas and work in a pattern and treat the roof in a manner similar to applying Armor All (We do not recommend Armor All for anything!) and you are done. Dicor recommends to treat the roof every 3-5 weeks which could be necessary in certain areas of the country of if you have certain environmental issues that could require more maintenance. If not, you can probably treat the Rubber Roof 2-3 times per year. You should always treat the roof when you wash it.
